Several schedule requests, some pretty tricky...

Hi scheduling Gods (ie gmo!) I have a whole bunch of requests here, some of which are for leagues with an odd number of teams in, so if they're too complicated to work with, just let me know - I will understand!

Also, I don't need them all right now, but I figured I may as well post them all in one go, and then they could be worked on at the leisure of anyone who can help. They're in the order in which I'll be using them.

Here they are:

1 subleague, 8 teams, 105 games
1 subleague, 9 teams, 96 games
1 subleague, 8 teams, 84 games
1 subleague, 6 teams, 35 games
1 subleague, 8 teams, 130 games
2 subleagues, 8 teams/7 teams, 130 games
2 subleagues, 7 teams/7 teams, 120 games
2 subleagues, 6 teams/7 teams, 130 games
2 subleagues, 6 teams/8 teams, 130 games
2 subleagues, 6 teams/6 teams, 130 games

Like I said thats a whole load, so there is really no urgency on them. I have no preferances on start dates, off days, etc. Would prefer to have no interleague, but its not a deal-breaker! All-star break would be good in the two subleague schedules, but not needed in the 1 subleague ones. If the number of games works out awkwardly, I would not mind at all if they are adjusted to a similar, easier number.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help!

Since you are flexible with start days & offdays, I would approach this as doing 4/5/6 games a week depending on how the series need to fall as 2-game and 3-game. Lengths will thus tend to vary, but start date you can always manually adjust.

No interleague is actually helpful, as there can thus be re-use. E.g., the 1 subleague 8-team/130-game can be used also for the 2-subleague setups with 130 games and an 8-team subleague.

Odd numbers of teams are an issue in that some team has to be off while the rest are playing. There is no way around that.

The odd numbers of games for a couple I would be inclined to adjust to an even number. I know 6-teams/35-games mean each opponent is played 7 times, but it also means that the home/away splits for teams are not even. I can do it that way, but I consider it more "fair" (mainly I guess because it is much more common) to have all teams play equal numbers of games home & away even if there is thus not perfect balance versus all opponents.

Cool, that all sounds alright by me. Like I said, I'm very flexible! Re: the odd number of teams - I don't have a problem with one team being off for a series while the others play. And if, say, a 40 game schedule works better than 35, then that really is not a problem at all. Anything you can do would be hugely appreciated.

I am making progress on these. Questions about the 7-team schedules.

First, the one that has 120 games is indeed 120 and not 130 like the others, correct?

Next, with 7 teams one must be off at any given time. For every 7 half-weeks, a team would only be playing on 6 series and would have one half-week off. To keep from having to make the 6-team and 8-team longer, would you be okay with teams having doubleheaders relatively commonly? Teams could thus have like 2 doubleheaders during a 3-week period, but then have 3-4 straight days off when their turn to not be in a matchup comes up.

Yeah, I'm more than happy to have doubleheaders in, as many as is needed to make things work best.

Many, many thanks again for helping on this gmo.

gmo, you quite simply rule. Thank you so much for these, fantastic stuff. If you are ever in Edinburgh, then there is a pint with your name on it.

Cheers,
John
