Fictional League Concern: Too Many .400 Hitters?

I've been running a league going on 40 seasons now, and the teams play 126 game seasons. I'm a bit gobsmacked at the high standard deviation in certain stats among the players.

In a league that hits anywhere from .253 to .289, it seems there is always someone who hits .400, and occasionally way over .400. But the thing I am also noticing is that the high average guy was between 44% and 61% higher than league average in my seasons 1923-1930, while in the American League by comparison, it had gone done to about 35% higher on average. That makes sense, because as baseball progressed and the very best talents were funneled to the big leagues more efficiently, the variation in stats among the players became a lot narrower.

Here is how the American League evolved between 1901 and 1930, showing by year the league batting average, the batting average for the batting champ, and how much higher the champ beat the league average by:

Code:
Year	League	Champ	Diff
1901	.277	.426	54%
1902	.275	.378	37%
1903	.255	.344	35%
1904	.244	.376	54%
1905	.241	.308	28%
1906	.249	.358	44%
1907	.247	.350	42%
1908	.239	.324	36%
1909	.244	.377	55%
1910	.243	.384	58%
1911	.273	.420	54%
1912	.265	.409	54%
1913	.256	.390	52%
1914	.248	.368	48%
1915	.248	.369	49%
1916	.248	.386	56%
1917	.248	.383	54%
1918	.254	.382	50%
1919	.268	.384	43%
1920	.283	.407	44%
1921	.292	.394	35%
1922	.285	.420	47%
1923	.283	.403	42%
1924	.290	.378	30%
1925	.292	.393	35%
1926	.281	.378	35%
1927	.286	.398	39%
1928	.281	.379	35%
1929	.284	.369	30%
1930	.288	.381	32%
1901-30	.266	.381	43%
Here is how my league evolved:

Code:
Year	League	Champ	Diff
1901	.282	.417	48%
1902	.284	.401	41%
1903	.289	.423	46%
1904	.284	.397	40%
1905	.288	.436	51%
1906	.278	.420	51%
1907	.286	.433	51%
1908	.262	.414	58%
1909	.257	.355	38%
1910	.256	.426	66%
1911	.263	.412	56%
1912	.256	.385	51%
1913	.260	.426	64%
1914	.256	.402	57%
1919	.265	.390	47%
1920	.253	.383	52%
1921	.273	.422	54%
1922	.270	.390	45%
1923	.275	.416	51%
1924	.278	.399	44%
1925	.274	.432	58%
1926	.279	.410	47%
1927	.270	.433	61%
1928	.271	.393	45%
1929	.283	.436	54%
1930	.275	.421	53%
1901-30	.272	.410	51%
There's a similarity in the first couple of decades which makes sense, but as I mentioned, they really begin to diverge in the 1920s (which I have highlighted in red). The batting averages for the champs in my League is not coming under control in the same way they did in the real life AL.

Has anyone else ever noticed that about their own fictional leagues taking place in the early 20th Century?

It may just be because you're playing pre-1930 so far, when that happened in real life more often. Stan Musial in 1945 has been my only real-life big leaguer to hit over .400, and that was only at .401.

I haven't yet played any leagues pre-1944, save for one that started in 1888 but got fried after one season. I'm planning to start a 1901-? league when OOTP16 comes out, though, so it should be interesting to see if my results are like yours. I assume you're using real-life players, correct? Recalc, or no?

I agree that the 1920's see too many .400 hitters. Here is my list of .400 hitters in my ABF league. yes the majority were by 3-4 real players with neutralized stats but still too many compared to rL.

Jeez, Ty Cobb hit .489 in 1913? That's beyond nuts. I would tear my hair out if any of my guys got that close to .500.

I'm guessing that's probably going to be a thing in OOTP 16. Maybe I should export on of the game files I have from before 1920 and sim that out?
