Walkers news: Sept. 10 -- Twin Cities 3, St. Louis 0

Record: 72-68, 4th (Tied/w. Springfield), 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Jacob Jones handled the first five innings and a quartet of relievers took care of the rest as Twin Cities shutout St. Louis 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (1997).
The doubleheader was necessitated after the opener of the four-game series was rained out.
Jones, who came into the game 5-10 with an ERA of almost 6.00, allowed just two hits in his five innings while striking out seven and walking three.
Erasmo Ramirez (1.1 innings pitched), Michael Mariot (0.2), Tobias Myers (1.0) and Luke Gregerson combined to finish the game.
Gregerson earned his second save. The Snow Cats five pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters.
Twin Cities got its first run in the second when Gleyber Torres singled with one-out single off River Walkers starter Aaron Nola.
A Carlos Santana single moved him to second. A wild pitched perched him on third.

Walkers news: Sept. 11 -- St. Louis 6, Twin Cities 5

Record: 73-69, 4th, 3.5 GB Cedar Rapids
St. Louis scored twice in both the eighth and ninth inning to rally from a 5-2 deficit and defeat Twin Cities 6-5 at Busch Stadium (1997).
The loss came on the heels of a game, where the River Walkers owned a 6-2 lead only to fall 9-6 to the Snow Cats.
This game was slightly similar, as the Walkers owned a 2-1 lead early only to watch it evaporate.
Rhys Hoskins had the biggest hit, his two-out single off Tyler Cyr chasing home Ender Inciarte with the winning run.
One batter earlier, an Andrew Benintendi single had plated Carlos Asuaje with the tying run.
The River Walkers had the bases loaded with no outs earlier in the inning, but two ground outs had led to force outs at the plate prior to Benintendi stepping to bat.
In the eighth, a triple from Bo Bichette off Tobias Myers had scored Ender Inciarte to make it 5-3.

Hoskins chased home Bichette with a sacrifice fly.
St. Louis rookie starter Alex Faedo struggled with his control and lasted just five innings, five runs on six hits. He walked five batters.
2018 Cy Young winner Jacob de Grom, who was signed to a minor league deal in August after being released by Cincinnati, offered two big innings of scoreless relief.
Josh Stautmont (0.2 IP), Jake Diekman (1.0) and Phil Maton (0.1) combined to finish it off.
Maton faced just one batter but earned his fourth win of the season.

Walkers news: Sept. 12 -- St. Louis 4, Twin Cities 3

Record: 74-69, 3rd, 3.5 GB Cedar Rapids
Twin Cities starting pitcher Nick Lodolo took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a 1-0 lead over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997).
He would not survive the inning and neither would his lead.
Pinch-hitter Albert Almora ended the no-hitter with a one-out double.
A two-out single from Bo Bichette moved Almora to third, and a walk to the red-hot Andrew Benintendi loaded the bases and ended Lodolo's game.
Tanner Houck took the mound, and four pitches later, on a 3-1 count, Rhys Hoskins hit a 410-foot bomb into the stands in right-center field for a grand slam and a 4-2 lead for St. Louis.
The River Walkers would go on to win 4-3, splitting the four-game series.

The Snow Cats would make it interesting in the ninth after pinch-hitter Roughned Odor hit a two-out solo homer off Walkers closer Tommy Kahnle.
Kahnle then walked Carlos Santana.
However, he got Michael Gigliotti to strike out to end it, and earn him a blemished 26th save.
Wade Miley turned in a strong starting performance for St. Louis, limiting Twin Cities to two runs on four hits over six innings.
Bobby Poyner and Reyes Moronta handled the seventh and eighth, respectively.

Walkers news: Sept. 13 -- Cedar Rapids 11, St. Louis 2

Record: 74-70, 4th, 4.5 GB Cedar Rapids
Grant Dayton's job was to retire just one batter.
He failed miserably and it led to a lopsided 11-2 loss for St. Louis in its game against Cedar Rapids at Busch Stadium (1997).
Entering the game with the bases loaded and his team down 1-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, the left-handed Dayton's job was to get out of the inning without further damage by retiring left-handed hitter Cornelius Randolph.

The worst outcome happened, Randolph took him deep hitting a 1-1 pitch 367-feet into the seats in left field for a grand slam and a 5-0 advantage.
It was Randolph's first homer of the season.

The onslaught was on after that.
Trevor Story greeted Tony Gonsolin with a solo homer to lead off the sixth.
Dominic Smith took Josh Staumont deep in the seventh to make it 7-0.
The Golden Grapplers then added four more in the ninth to make it really ugly.
Not that it really matter, former River Walkers starter Trevor Bauer took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a single to pinch-hitter Scott Schebler.
Nicky Delmonico and Tucker Barnhart had RBI singles off him in the seventh, making it 7-2.
Bauer ended up going 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
Making a spot start by a rotation left out of sorts by a doubleheader against Twin Cities, Brendan Spagnuolo shut out the Grapplers for four innings before seemingly running out of gas in the fifth.
Wilson Ramos led off the fifth with a double.

A bunt by Bauer moved him to third.
Ramos scored when Victor Robles hit into a fielder's choice.
Not much later, Dayton entered the game and it turned into a blowout.

Record: 75-70, 3rd (Tied/w. Kansas City), 3.5 GB Cedar Rapids
A day after taking a lopsided loss at the hands of Cedar Rapids, St. Louis turned the tables routing the Golden Grapplers 13-7 at Busch Stadium (1997).
The River Walkers scored two runs in each of the first three innings, and then after the Grapplers pulled to within 6-3, they added on four more in the fifth to make it 10-3.

Bo Bichette was 4 for 5 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Ender Inciarte was 4 for 6 with two doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs as St. Louis pounded out 20- hits against seven Cedar Rapids pitchers.

Walkers news: Sept. 15 -- St. Louis 3, Cedar Rapids 0

Record: 76-70, 3rd, 2.5 GB Cedar Rapids
Aaron Nola tossed his second shutout of the season, this time a five-hit gem, as St. Louis defeated Cedar Rapids 3-0 at Busch Stadium (1997).
With the win, the River Walkers took the final two games of the three-game series with the first-place team in the National League South Division. St. Louis sits in third place, 2.5 games in back of the Golden Grapplers with 16 games left in the season.
In his nine innings, Nola scattered the five hits while striking out six and walking none.
His counterpart, Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Carlos Martinez, was pretty good himself. He worked six innings, allowing one run on two hits.
That run came on a solo homer from Rhys Hoskins in the fifth inning.
St. Louis added additional runs in the seventh -- Bo Bichette led off with a double off Jacob Rhame and scored on an Andrew Benintendi single -- and eighth -- Andrelton Simmons singled and later scored on a Bichette sacrifice fly -- to make the 3-0 final.

With the win, the River Walkers moved past the Harvesters and into second place in the National League South Division. St. Louis trails first-place Cedar Rapids by two games.
