Julio Becquer -- Twins
Becquer was a partial season player for the Twins. These images from golden oldie Topps Folder AF (116 and 117), from the find of restored images. Thought the upgrade was remarkable.
Will try to feature these from time to rime! |

Asking cleanup crew for help
As I have begun breaking the Vault trove into teams, these significant people are only shown as Braves in these badly aging images. I marvel at the work that can be done; help to restore these as best can be done would be appreciared!

Dick Starr (transformed, colorized and customed)
I have no idea what makes me do stuff like this. There are plenty of legitimate Dick Starr Browns images around. So what makes me look at a minor league Baltimore Orioles image (which I posted here a while back--not gonna re-post it here) and decide THAT'S the St. Louis Browns image I want? Beats the heck out of me. Maybe it's the challenge or maybe I like torturing myself.
Generally, I'd say my work on this one is sloppy. In many regards. But.... eh. The blue is not intended to be sky. I've seen that fence in other images and there's a town (and what I think is a train) beyond that fence. Could be a different part of the fence, but I took it to be one of those tarps you see teams use in warm-ups when they don't want to lose any baseballs. Probably should have gone with sky, huh? Biggest issue I had on this was that Dick's face printed up as very washed out. Had to isolate the face and crank the contrast on it. Also had to build up (a little) because of my stupid template. |

Lumpkin's Mystery Reds Players
Quote:
The player on the left stumped me. The uniform in that case was from the 1961-1966 period. His chin and very deep dimples matched those of Larry Himes, who was on the Reds' spring rosters in 1962, 1963, and 1964. But the head shape and smile didn't quite seem to fit. They looked a little more like Andy Rubilotto, who was a non-roster invitee with the Reds in 1962, but he didn't have the deep dimple. A photo of the player on the left is shown on the left and a photo of Larry Himes is shown for comparison. |

Lumpkin's Mystery Reds Players - Continued
After further photo comparisons, I'm inclined to think that the player on the left is pitcher Jim Morio, who was a Reds' spring roster invitee in 1966. The only photo I have for Morio is his obituary picture. He died on March 16, 2012. He appears to have the same dimple and chin structure as the player on the left. His smile is a better fit than was that of Larry Himes. His head structure seems more elongated than Himes', which would be a better fit. Since the obit photo depicts Morio at an older age, it would be a reasonable assumption that his face would have looked thinner during his playing days.

It's odd that baseball-reference.com and Wikipedia.org are still listing Bob Kuzava as being alive about three days after he supposedly passed away. Usually when a player dies there is not this long of a delay before the these sources change a player's status to deceased. Kuzava is still listed on Wikipedia's Oldest living MLB Players as the 20th oldest living major leaguer. |

Bob Kuzava
Quote:
I have a couple of sites I go to for necrology. And, for a quick summary, I prefer Baseball Almanac to Baseball-Reference. One of the sites I frequent posted this from a "very good friend" of Bob Kuzava written May 16 and referencing his death as happening "yesterday". And, as long as we're on the subject, the image appearing with the post looks a bit green. So I did a little color correction. Slight initial color balance away from green, drained the green and yellow from the uni only, colorized the sky (added clouds), and then worked on the face (and a little bit on the hands). Lost some of the resolution on the trees, but that could easily be fixed, were I of a mind to do it. Edit: For those who don't have Facebook accounts, I've added a screen capture of the notice I referenced above. Last edited by FatJack; 05-19-2017 at 03:17 PM. |
