Get Your Cuban Names Here

I searched around the Mods forum and I couldn't find where anyone has tried to develop and post .txt files for Cuban names. I've seen posts mentioning the desire for them, but I've not seen anyone post any. So I am posting mine here.

Most of us know that Cuban names, especially first names, are not like any other Spanish-speaking country. They're unique, almost certainly influenced by the half century they have spent under Communism.

I came across a database of stats from the Cuban Serie Nacional running from 2001 to 2014, and the moment I saw it, I thought, what a great opportunity this provided to put together a list of Cuban first names and last names that people could use to modify their own names text files, so they could add Cuban players with real Cuban names to their games. And so I have attached these text files here.

For the country code, I reassigned one of the non baseball countries to Cuba, in this case, Romanian (#35). If I were to make the change to my own names files, this is the country I would replace. You may want to use a different country, in which case, you should do a find-and-replace of the country code ",35", and replace it with the country code of your choice.

If you decide go forward with using this, don't forget to change the language ID (ethnicity) mix in the ethnicities.txt file for the country you are replacing to add this, so that it better reflects the actual FaceGen makeup of Cuba. In my case, the original country code 35, Romanian, shows to be 100% Caucasian. That's not Cuba by a long shot, but then, just doing 100% Hispanic probably won't make it very realistic, either. You can do what you want—it's your game—but if you want to better reflect reality, here's a Wikipedia article that might guide the numbers you use: Demographics of Cuba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Here's a sample of what the first names file looks like:

Code:
Abdel,2,35
Abel,1,35
Adalberto,1,35
Adeiny,1,35
Adelmo,1,35
Adir,1,35
Adonis,3,35

I should probably point out here that since this name file was derived form a list of Cuban baseball players playing 2001-2014, all the players were born after the 1959 revolution, which might mean that the first names are a lot different than of those Cubans born before 1959. So if your Cuban league includes players born before 1959, you might want to consider using traditional Hispanic names instead.

I just googled around and I found this great article, written just this year, about the practice of unusual names give to babies in Cuba after the revolution, how it has held on for almost 50 years, and how the trend may start petering out:

Younger Cuban Generation Turns Away From Eccentric Names

And here's another one that ran on the BBC news website in 2012:

In my game, I used this file and replaced the Albanian names. Did you manage to change the naming to say "Cuban" or was it still saying "Romanian" but reflects you changes? I can't get mine to change and was wondering if it was just by design or if I edited/made changes wrong?

Nevermind just checked and indeed that's precisely the case. Changing the name of the language won't change it, but the file will change once you make the requisite changes to the name files.
