But I'm the most excited about the 2001 Mariners. One of the best records ever but they get no love in the great teams of all-time discussion because they didn't do well in the playoffs. If this SuperTournament does anything I hope it will be to give the 2001 Mariners their due credit.

The 1927 Yankees may have won it all, but it wasn't the way you might expect. Their bats were only just above league average, with a wRC+ of 105. Part of it comes from the fact that the '27 Yankees struck out a lot, which becomes more of a liability when the K/AB rate doubles, as it did from 1927 to 1977. But I think some of it's luck.

As for the 2001 Mariners . . . I don't really know what to say. Much of it is that their pitching was never great; they relied on decent pitching, really good hitting and great fielding. Perhaps it was bad luck?

Interesting tidbit. At this point we're 60% through the first round. So far, 29 of the 30 franchises have teams in the next round. The outlier? Tampa Bay! They have two teams in League 1-8, but that will be their only chance. And so far you'd rightly guess that the Yankees have the most teams advancing (24 so far) but you might be surprised to see that the Pirates have the second most teams, not the Red Sox. The other teams that, based on the current estimates, have 10+ in the next round so far are: St. Louis, Cleveland, the Giants and the Tigers.

Well, the 1998 New York Yankees are finally in play. If people name DH teams to the best of all-time discussion, this is the team. But this is also the 2016 Chicago Cubs appearance, as well as some other fun teams. This is also the last league for the Rays to qualify a team for the next round.

You know, why does everyone assume that the best team of all-time has to be old? Every team that gets brought up is from 20+ years ago. Of the 2526 teams we've seen since 1901, almost 20% of them have been since 2000. Which means that we would assume, on average, that at least 1 in 5 of the top teams to be from the last 16 years. But really, we should expect higher. After all, the understanding of how to maximize performance from team assembly has only improved as time has passed.

Well. Don't really know what to say. The 1998 Yankees came and went, putting up a 119-121 record, with a (0) pythag adjustment. The sad truth is that in any given year, the standard deviation of any team is 8 games. Which means that a respectable amount of the time a 127 win team will finish with 119 wins. Were the 1998 Yankees a little overrated? Perhaps. But they could just as easily have been one of the better teams here and just underperformed. But I guess we should expect such things. There are plenty more rounds to go. And we'll see a lot more great teams get unlucky and flame out. And we'll see a lot of poor teams overperform. The randomness of life happens, and will continue to happen.

Surprises? Perhaps. The Orioles just got wrecked. They have some good teams remaining of course. Really, that franchise only had one strong time (late 60s, early 70s) and everything since then hasn't been too strong. Also, the Phillies are a surprise in the opposite direction. Part of this is that their early teams had both strikeout pitching (Pete Alexander) and home runs (Gavvy Cravath) when few other teams did. The other part is that their peaks in the 80s and around 2010 were both very strong. Still, a surprising amount of success.


Advancing Specifically:

The top 336 teams advanced (3/8ths of the 900). The cutoff ended up being 125 wins. The decision of which 125 win teams to eliminate (as there were 15 for 11 spots) was made by team WAR in their simulated season. It wasn't close. The DH leagues were weirdly top-heavy: they had a disproportionate number of teams with great records, but proportionately fewer teams with good records. Accordingly, only 99 DH teams made the cut, which means that the DH leagues are smaller (and the paired Original Leagues are the same size). The default theory was 6 leagues of 56 teams (28 on each side) but the disproportion required changes.

There's no question the quality of team has jumped a lot here. I'm surprised to see the early era so concentrated in that Original League; 44% of the teams coming from before 1940 is a big surprise. This group has two best-finishing Round 1 teams, the 1997 Yankees and the 1998 Astros. Should be fun.

So. Surprised about the 1950 Boston Red Sox? Don't be. So far this season they've hit 317/393/533, and that's with no DH. Is this a fluke? In real life as a team they hit 302/385/464, and scored 1027 runs, which is more than any team since the offense-heavy 1930s. They had a pythag of 94-60, two worse than the league-winning Yankees. Truthfully, their pitching was below average in 1950, which means they probably have one of the worst pitching staffs in the SuperTournament. And also, full disclosure, they may have one of the very best offenses in the whole thing; they certainly led their league in offense in Round 1.

Incidentally. I was watching a game and the most awesome thing happened. The 1919 Giants held a 3-0 lead on the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates. This carried into the bottom of the ninth. Art Neff came in to pitch for the Giants; he's 7/5/8, making him fine but not a great closer. The Pirates score but get two outs, so there's a man on first, two outs, down 3-1. Manny Sanguillen, the excellent catcher, hits a sinking liner to right that Ross Youngs just couldn't get to. So men on first and second, two outs, and the winning run comes to the plate in the form of Willie Stargell (think Carlos Delgado, or any super-masher ever). The pitch comes and Stargell swings. You know those home runs that are line drives, so they look like doubles but they happen to carry over the fence? This wasn't one of those. The ball exploded off the bat and was over the right field fence before I could blink. Extreme prejudice was shown. The Pirates stormed the field.

It was awesome. It was one of those things that I've read about and seen once or twice, but to see Willie Stargell crush that pitch . . . It was pretty special.

My tournament has led me to reflect a lot on the nature of success as perceived in retrospect. One of the things that tends to throw off OOTP from recreating what happened historically is that often extreme performances are beneficiaries of luck.

Take 1968 Bob Gibson for example. The best single-season ERA of all-time past 1906 belongs to Bob Gibson's 1968 season, where he put up an ERA of 1.12. Now 1968 was a super pitcher-friendly year; the NL average ERA was only 2.99. Even still, 1.12 is an insane performance, and it rightly ranks as one of the best years ever by a pitcher in the modern era. However, in my SuperTournament 1968 Bob Gibson is considered one of the very best pitchers, but hardly the best by a mile (which his ERA suggests he is). This is because, while he was the best pitcher in the NL, it wasn't by as much as it looked like. He put up a FIP of 1.77 (obviously higher than his ERA) which still led the NL but Don Moose and Don Sutton put up 2.06 and 2.08 respectively, Tom Seaver pitched a 2.22. He was the best pitcher in the league, definitely. But compare that to ERA where he pitched a 1.12 ERA season, and the next closest was Bobby Bolin at 1.99. So what gives?

Bob Gibson was had a career .268 BABIP, which is exceptional but not a surprise given that he dominated batters so thoroughly. But in 1968 his BABIP was .230. He was lucky. Really, really, lucky. So you have what was clearly one of the better seasons ever, but because of how lucky he was it looked like the best season ever. OOTP ignores the luck. This makes its Bob Gibson more accurate to the player's actual skill, but less accurate to the results of the year.

Also, slight nonsequitor, I don't think that fielding-dependent teams are going to do very well in this tournament for a similar reason.

For example. The 2001 Seattle Mariners put up a great freaking season, hitting 140 runs above average and allowing 160 runs below average. This combined for a 109-53 pythag. Great team right? And yet. Of those 160 runs allowed below average, 107 were fielding runs. Which makes the remaining 53 runs allowed remaining from pitching, except that Safeco is a pitcher-friendly park. Short version: Seattle's bats were great but their pitching was only slightly above average. Their fielding was so out of control good that it pushed the team from very good into truly great. But fielding year-to-year is very volatile and OOTP tends to stabilize this by taking the fielding from three years; the year in question and the ones on either side. But, you may be saying, the 2001 Seattle Mariners were a great fielding team and they had more or less the same team in both 2000 and 2002, so surely they'd be good in those years, right? From 2000 to 2002 the Mariners put up +29, +107, +5. 2001 was a year where a very good fielding team put up a monstrously good year, but it was clearly not duplicatable. And OOTP knows that and rates Seattle as just the very good fielding team, but certainly not the +107 team it happened to be that year since the +107 was clearly a super-fluke.

Realistic, but not intuitive.
