Historical Fielding Ratings Weirdness
Upon starting a new historical game (fielding ratings based off entire career, historical minors on) in 1909, I was surprised to find a. almost everyone's ratings as fielders were rather low, with almost nobody having a position rating higher than 55 on a 20-80 scale (although it wouldn't surprise me if that were by design for some purpose of ensuring historical statistical accuracy in a way I cannot at this time discern) b. players with great defensive reputations having mediocre at best ratings. 21 year-old Tris Speaker, for example, was barely playable as a LF and not at all as a CF.
After this, I went through a few different permutations of ratings calculations basis, with broadly similar results. Looking to see if this were merely a Deadball Era-related fluke (since the game was so different), I started a 1960 game...in which I found Richie Ashburn to be one of the game's better-fielding shortstops, despite his having never played the position in real-life. |

Ashburn is a bug.
Tris Speaker goes as high as 77 depending on year. 50 is average so 55 is above average. There are only 13 gradations between 20 and 80 and 200,000 players to slot.

1914 Tris Speaker was 26/100 at center. I can't believe that's right. He was in his prime and considered one of the all-time greats. In general, fielding ratings for this era are both compressed and depressed. They are way down from version 17, and they don't have much differentiation between the good and bad fielders. For 1901, Jimmy Collins leads the way with 64/100. He was at 111 in version 17.

I'm running another test sim (no historical minors, fielding ratings based off entire career) and...same problem. It's 1943, and Joe DiMaggio has a career .900 EFF in CF, routinely costing his team 30+ runs a year with his defense...his range is so poor that despite 200 experience at CF, the game cannot even give him a rating. Same thing for his brothers, Lloyd Waner, and others...the two greatest defensive CF of all-time are Phil Cavaretta and Maurice Archdeacon. That doesn't seem right at all.

Fixed in the latest build. Defensive imports look pretty good.
