2080 Season (6/28 – 6/30)

Miami United (41-37, .526, 3rd NL East) @ Montreal Alouettes (41-36, .532, 2nd NL East)
At 41-36 and 2nd in the NL East, the Montreal Alouettes are a difficult club to figure… their offense is in shambles (12th everywhere except dingers where they rank 8th) while the Pitching is, well, mostly elite. They are t-1st in runs against (read: stout defensively), 1st in FIP, and 2nd in Starters ERA… and with a guy like SP Bubacarr Graba anchoring the staff, there will be no shelter here. And, it should be noted that these numbers have held without the G.O.A.T. Josiah Weber and the solid Vicente De La Cruz in the rotation, starting or otherwise. Harlem Peterson, mired in his worst season as a pro, leads the offense – but the jury is still out on where he is leading them too, if he knows where he is going, and if his GPS is functioning correctly, while over-the-hill vets like DH Randall Berger and 3B Raymond Haynes idle their time between actually trying and sucking up pay. Here’s a club that could do something in 2080 if they were willing to trade from their strength to do something, anything really, about their dreadful Achilles heel of an offense. Or maybe Florent Lefebvre, a Canadian National hailing from Waterloo, Ontario with a fair reputation despite being gainfully employed as a Major League GM for nearly 20 years (he did win a ring in Philly, so there is that), is content to just shuffle along like his aging stars and ride this wave until he’s pitched up into the reef for the very last time… no riding off into the sunset, just an unceremonious, “you’re done” kick in the pants on his way to a comfortable, well-funded, obscurity. Until then, it’s so-so, if occasionally good, baseball and all you can eat poutine for the former Scouting Director turned GM.

I don't get it...

79 of 162: Murray Wagner (5-3, 5.21) @ Dylan Bauer (3-6, 5.22)
Win, 8-7
. 6-15 in 1-run games… what? This one went to extras with a Ned Saucerman solo-HR putting us up for good in the top of the 10th before Jerome Dial came in during the bottom of that frame to close out the show with his 3rd sniped W of the season… Norton Manning drew FOUR BBs, Saucy added a double and 2 RBIs to go with his game-winning jack, Anaconda & OH HONG combined to strike out 5 times, and Manookian hit his 5th two-bagger of the season. Also, of note… Milt Montemayor pitched 2.2 innings and K’d 5 of the 8 batters he faced – that’s, how you say… pretty good.

Elsewhere: How about them Havana Sugar Kings? A 7-0 win in Sugarland that featured a 3 for 4 performance from Tyler Glen that included two dingers and four riblets, and a complete-game, 2-hit, 9 K shutout courtesy of SP Ryan Burg. Also, SP Howard Min, of the Columbus Bluejackets, went a great 8 IPs with 2 hits, 0 earned, and 8 K’s in a 3-2 win over the Spokane Steelheads. Add that one to the history book(s) (dad joke alert – puns are fun)…Also, joining Mr. Glen in today’s 2 HR club from the Bush League was Neil RUSH of the Mississippi Hound Dogs – his came in a 12-5 win over the Gulfport Swallows – and Charlie Hultquist, of the Coney Island Footlongs, who did it during an 8-0 win over the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai.

80 of 162: Julian Horne (9-1, 2.26) @ Mikhail Poppen (7-4, 2.83)
Loss, 4-3
. Our 8, or was it 9, game winning streak came to a crashing halt against the Alouettes as we lose our 16th 1-run game of the season… Poppen was solid for Montreal – 8 innings, 7 hits, 3 earned – while our man, Julian Horne, could only muster 6, shaky innings of work with 8 hits, 4 earned, and 4 walks… Bill Gordon went 3 for 3 and scored all three of our runs – Manning brought him around twice, and Magmo once. I overheard our Manager serving up this gem to the local, Montreal-based beat writers… "We had the game right there for the taking," said Miami manager Matt "don't call me Pat" Riley. "But we decided not to take it." – I’m probably going to ban him from speaking to the media for a couple of days… in other news, your boy Ned Saucerman has hit safely in 20 straight tilts… he went 1 for 4 today, so, hanging on by the skin of his teeth.

Elsewhere: Brooklyn’s Rich Hamilton drove in 6 runs in the Citizens 16-8 win over the St. Louis Rams… he also hit a 3-run ding dong and scored 3 times. Colby Blount, of the Portland Timbers, went 3 for 4 with a double, a jack, 6 RBIs, and 2 runs in his clubs 13-7 win over Cascadia rivals, the Seattle SoundersCubas’ 4 RBIs weren’t enough to lift Seattle to victory in this one – had Palmer Parker, who is leading the AL in All-Star voting, also decided to contribute they’d have had a chance. And, lastly, for now – SP T-Rex Stiles, of your HAVANA SUGAR KINGS, pitched a complete game, 4-hit shutout in a 3-0 win over the Sugar Land Skeeters… he makes up for his short arms with his long legs and economical delivery… he fanned 9 in the contest, his cutter was sharp all night.

81 of 162: Kordell Littles (8-4, 2.65) @ Bubacarr Garba (1-2, 4.80)
Win, 2-1
. Back on track, sort of… 6-16 in 1-run games. We’d put two bad ones on Bubacarr in the top of the 1st, Kordell was uneven – 5 walks, 6 Ks, 1 earned – OH HONG recorded an RBI on a SAC FLY, we stole 5 bags (three for Gordon, one each for Saucerman and Manookian), and delivered a web gem worthy DP to get out of a jam in the bottom of the 1st. Ardolph picks up his 1st hold of 2080, and Dial earns his 15th save… nothing fancy and not much to see here, but we got the win and Saucerman extended his hitting streak to 21 games (1 for 5, with the hit coming in his 5th AB – crazy, I’d have pitched around a division rival just to be nasty – Canadians really are the nicest people on the planet).

Notes: Your players of the week are Pablo Madera (CAR) in the American League and our own CF Bill Gordon in the National League… Offensive Players of the Month are Pablo Madera (CAR - .409, 8 jacks, 24 RBIs, 21 runs) in the AL, Dontrell Gay (LAK - .364, 11 jacks, 33 RBIs, 19 runs) in the NL… Pitchers of the Month are Josiah Kawka (CHI – 1.90 ERA, 32 Ks in 47.1 innings) in the AL and Julen Morales (STL – 1.96 ERA, 33 Ks, 46 innings)…we’re 4th on the weekly power ranking, it’s too hot in the hot tub. Headed to Brooklyn next where we’ll, hopefully, feast on the floundering Citizens (currently 5th in the NL East) while extending our ½ game lead over Montreal for 2nd place in the process… still 9-1 in our last 10 and a scant 6 games back from Pittsburgh at the halfway point of the 2080 campaign, plenty of runway left for us to pull off the impossible. Oh, and the Toronto Reds BC is, at the halfway point, according to the overall record and their current form (7-3 for their last 10), the best team of the 1st half at 52-31 with a 6 ½ game lead over the 2nd Place Carolina Panthers in the AL East.

2080 Season (A trade I made with St. Louis)

I made a trade… in a fit of boredom (and because Crawford has an above-average OPS and is cheap). He can hit – basically – but he can’t field (OFR of 35, OFE of 50, has a cannon though (OFA 80). He also can’t run – he waddles well enough though. I’ll let the game tell you the rest...

Miami and St. Louis have made a swap. Players involved in the transaction are the United 22-year-old RHP Aiden O'Brien and 20-year-old minor league LHP Will Nuñez and the Rams 24-year-old RF Dominic Crawford and 20-year-old minor league LHP Cats Prieto.

This season-to-date, O'Brien has fashioned a 3-6 mark and 6.21 ERA in 71 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .312 against him and he has logged 53 strikeouts. Don't let the numbers fool you - he will be an all-star one day.

So far this season Crawford has put up a .299 batting average with 88 hits, 16 home runs and 59 RBIs.

Also, because of this transaction, FUNKY MARTIN is now on the big clubs 25-man roster and RF Patrick Manookian was designated for assignment and placed on irrevocable waivers.

2080 Season (7/1 – 7/2)

Miami United (43-38, .531, 2nd NL East) @ Brooklyn Citizens (41-42, .494, 5th NL East)
That the Brooklyn Citizens find themselves 5th in the NL East is something of an anomaly. They’re only a game under .500, have the 6th rated offense in the NL, and, while it could be better, their pitching/defense is allowing fewer runs than their offense is producing (sort of – they have a +6 rDiff as a club, which, if we’re being honest is essentially even with 83 games already in the can). Their Ace, SP Cam Murphy, went on the IL back in April and is only now returning to action – his first taste of Big League action since April 2nd came on the 22nd of June and, while solid, he still needs a bit of time to work himself into the form he’s capable of. Offensively, they are good enough, though they do have some areas that could be shored up before the trading deadline – what they have now is middle-of-the-road power dispersed throughout the heart of their lineup, a good ability to get on base (4th OBP), and the best baserunning acumen in our league (+17.7 BR). For now, the Citizens are exactly what you’d think they’d be – that rare instance where everything they are on paper has been replicated out on the field of play. They do have the 5th ranked system with some blue-chippers that look less than a year away from becoming mainstays on the big club. If that’s how they intend to play it, and I’d argue that it’s not the worst way to do things – organically – then patience is the only virtue they should be thinking about… of course, if they want to bring those dates up to and take a run at it, a package that includes a blue-chipper with an aging vet can net some really good, immediate returns. The Citizens will be one to watch as the deadline approaches – it’ll be interesting to see what route back to the promised land they choose to take.

82 of 162: Harvey Allen (6-5, 3.18) @ Hunter Larson (3-10, 5.81)
Win, 6-2
. Harvey gave us 7 innings of near bliss, allowed one runner to plate, and fanned 7 batters (he also doled out 4 free passes, but let’s not worry about that too much – it’s like I said, these guys know how to work a count and get on base), Aris went 2 for 3 with a double, a homer, and 2 runs, and OH HONG put his 5th ball out of the park. New guy, Dom Crawford, finished 2 for 4 with a solo homer like it was no big thing, Funky gave us 2 innings in relief and didn’t allow a hit (only one runner got on base against him – Roan Munoz’s 2nd BB of the day), and we overcame a couple of fielding errors to walk away with the win. In unfortunate news – Saucerman’s hitting streak came to an end on a 0 for 5 day that included a couple of amateurish Ks.

Elsewhere: Philadelphia 3B, Eddie Hand, went 2 for 4 with a double, a GRAND SLAM, and 2 runs in the 76ers 12-6 win over the St. Louis Rams. The East Carolina alum, and 31st best prospect in baseball, has started 19 games for Philly since being called up in late May and already has 3 jacks and 15 RBIs to his name – he has also shown a lack of discipline at the plate in racking up 12 Ks during this stint on the big club… Dontrell Gay & Otto Isaac, the LA Kings fearsome twosome, each put balls out of the park for Los Angeles during their 3-1 win over the San Diego Chargers – Dontrell is leading the league at 27 (4 more than Franzone) and Otto is 7th at 17 jacks so far (despite missing some time due to injury). SP Cameron Wan (of the Salem Silverbacks) pitched a near no-no in a complete game, 1-hit shutout with 10 Ks in his clubs 2-0 win over the Austin Grackles – and, only slightly outdone by Wan, SP Cristobal Ruiz (Long Beach Titans) and Wes Doles (Salt Lake Alpines) both threw complete game, 2-hitters to lead their teams to victory… Long Beach took home a 2-0 victory over the Hartford Whalers while Salt Lake beat the Louisville Bats by that same score…

83 of 162: Rad Taylor (8-5, 2.65) @ Les Trost (6-7, 4.74)
Win, 6-0.
Rad Taylor gets stronger as the season moves along – your boy pitched a complete game, 1-HIT, shutout with 6 Ks to lead the Flim Flams to a 6-0 win over the Citizens here and even got some help from OH HONG, who went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and a run, and Anaconda, who went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 runs. Saucerman is back on the snide, 1 for 5 (1 game hitting streak, y’all!), and new guy Dom Crawford got a hit, drove one in, scored, and got pegged in the bicep by an errant throw from reliever Guy Becker… It was all clear skies, 77 degrees, with a light 11 MPH breeze blowing in from left to right at Citi Field tonight – maybe that’s why Rad gave up 3 walks tonight (or, it could be the whole, ‘work the count & get on” mentality that the Citizens are so bought into). MINI SWEEP FOR THE ‘MINGOS! GET SOME!

Notes: We’ll have a day off before heading to Pittsburgh for a 4-game parlay… then it’s the all-star break. A chance for the majority of our club to catch some R&R, bag some rays in Miami, and to recharge their batteries for what looks to have the makings of a legendary push to the finish line… we are, without a doubt the hottest club in the land right now – our timing is perfect, the engine is purring… we now have a 1-game lead over the Alouettes – meaningless at this stage of the game, but there’s no place I’d rather be given the way we started this campaign – and, pending the outcome of this next series in Pittsburgh – are within sniffing distance of taking the top spot on the NL East table… of course, it should be noted that even a 4-game sweep won’t get us all the way there, so, if it is a feat we can accomplish it’ll have to wait until after the all-star break.

Elsewhere (on our day off): SS Steve Green, of your Havana Sugar Kings, went 3 for 4 with a GRAND SLAM and 2 runs in the SK’s 10-1 win over the Nashville Picks… Steve has largely struggled in Triple-A play this year, posting a .226/.283/.294 slash with only 3 jacks and 25 RBIs in 60 games… LF Aaron Sammon, of the Mississippi Hound Dogs, went 3 for 4 with 2 jacks, both of the solo variety, and a walk in his clubs 7-5 LOSS against the Bowling Green Lickers… the 34-year old, two-time Silver Slugger, one-time Gold Glove, and one-time All-Star with 15 years of Major League service is currently hitting .278/.349/.529 with 15 ding dongs and 41 RBIs in 55 games for the Hound Dogs… my man is wringing every last ounce of baseball he can get out of his body before retiring on a beach somewhere in the Bahamas.

2080 Season (7/4 – 7/7)

Pittsburgh Steelers (51-33, .607, 1st NL East) @ Miami United (45-38, .542, 2nd NL East)
Tom Franzone
has all the juice – internationally known, extremely popular, national Yuengling spokesman, leading all-star vote-getter in the national league… but, he might not even be the best player on the Steelers in the first half as Remildo Puente has not-so-quietly put together his best season as a pro so far. Puente has been fierce for Steel City - .325/.382/.586, with a .964 OPS, 3.4 WAR, 21 HRs, and 76 RBIs… the Seacaucus, NJ native is really putting it down this year and will be arbitration-eligible at the end of this campaign. Pittsburgh’s finances will likely be taut next year… entirely worth it though when the heart of your lineup already has 44 jacks and 138 RBIs before the all-star break. This one will likely be a tough 4-game stretch for us – Pittsburgh’s pitching is solid, hard to find much fault in their rotation and the bullpen has something snappy too, and their offense, Captained by Franzone, is as deadly as it gets. We’ll need to stay scrappy, step into the pocket, and reel off as many consecutive check hooks as we can if we are to approach the results we’re looking for here…

84 of 162: Robby Garrett (8-6, 4.26) @ Murray Wagner (5-3, 5.88)
Loss, 2-1
. Oof… Murray was solid, better than solid really, and gave us a great 8 with 5 hits and 2 earned… wasn’t enough though as our offense went lame in this one… 2 for 4 day with an RBI for Saucerman, he’s now hit safely in two straight games, Anaconda and Crawford both went 0 for 3 (Crawford drew a walk though), Webster got the DH nod over OH HONG and did nothing with it (0 for 4), and Marshburn got caught with his hand in the honey pot. On the Brightside, Franzone and Puente didn’t hurt us. Well, that’s not entirely true as Puente drove in the winning run on a double during the top of the 8th… the kid is pretty good at baseball.

Elsewhere: Jonah Dove (CAR) smacked two balls out of the park in Carolina’s 5-4 win over the New York Jets… 37-years old and still going strong – Dove now has 20 jacks so far and a .942 OPS for the season – which, if it holds (it won’t), will be his best posting in that category during his 15-year major league career. Otto Isaac (LAK) hit his 19th jack of the season – he’s only played in 53 games this season and seems to be hellbent on making up for lost time. Easton Thorne, currently plying his trade in Triple-A with the Huntington Beach Bombers, went 4 for 4 with a solo shot and 2 runs in his clubs 7-5 win over the Hartford Whale… 37-years old and hanging on for dear life, Easton was purchased by San Diego from the Beaumont Bullies after playing in only 2 games for the Bush League club (that, of course, is after playing for 4 different BL clubs since 2077… with stops in Naperville, Shreveport, Nolanville, and Dearborn along the way – never give up on your dreams, kids)… Speaking of the Bush League and of the Beaumont Bullies specifically, their Catcher, Pancho Reyes, went 2 for 2 with 2 jacks, 4 RBIs, and 2 free passes in his clubs 11-2 win over the Roanoke Raccoons – the 27-year old Costa Rican, and former Pennsylvania Quaker, managed to get an extended cup of coffee in the bigs with Montreal before turning his attention to the BL in 2080… he’s hitting .235/.359/.569 with 14 HRs and 36 RBIs in 51 games with the Bullies thus far.

85 of 162: Vin Uhlman (8-4, 3.73) @ Julian Horne (9-2, 2.48)
Win, 4-1
. We’d get 7 innings of work from Horne here with 8 hits, 1 earned, and 8 Ks, OH HONG went 1 for 3 with a 2-run HR, and Jerome Dial earned his 16th Save of the season… Magno hit two, two-baggers and scored twice, Anaconda registered his 20th double of the season, drove one in on it, and scored a couple of batters later, and Webster, at it again as the DH, acquitted himself quite nicely in a 2 for 3 effort where he’d drive one in and steal a base. We drew 6 walks as a club, stole two bags, and turned a tasty little double play in the bottom of the 7th that got Horne out of a jam.

Elsewhere: Cadillac Jaime, of the Newport Beach Gypsies (a Vancouver affiliate), went 3 for 5 with 2 ding dongs, 5 RBIs, and 2 runs in his clubs 8-3 win over the Spokane Steelheads… Jaime spent significant stretches in the majors over the last two seasons, but forgot to bring his bat each time and has a paltry .214 average in the top tier – let’s hope that the young man has finally closed up his holes in the strike zone a bit – we need guys named Cadillac in the Majors. 1B Mick Wallin, of the Continental League’s Stockton Sailers, went 3 for 3 with 2 bombs, 4 RBIs, and 4 runs in a 9-0 win over the Little Rock Rascals… in Little Rock – solid day for the Seals’ longshot prospect – and, SP Sylvester Cool, a mainstay of the Chula Vista Terrapins’ rotation, pitched a complete game, 4-hit shutout and fanned 13 batters in his teams 2-0 win over the Fairbanks (AK REPRESENT) Emperors. Cool, like Mick, is a long-shot to make the majors – but, you have to celebrate the little things lest life passes you by.

86 of 162: Beau Skrivan (8-2, 3.47) @ Kordell Littles (9-4, 2.58)
Win, 6-3
. Tom Franzone did whatever Tom Franzone wanted to do in this one – 2 for 4, 2 JACKS, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs – but, none of his faithful teammates followed him into the breach and we managed to take home another win in this one… Kordell was strong against all comers, not named Tom Franzone, went 8, allowed 9 hits, 2 dingers, and 3 runs while fanning 8, OH HONG hit his 7th homer, Anaconda hit his 23rd, Jerome secured his 17th SV, Crawford hit a run-scoring double, and we, in back to back games, manage to give our hometown fans something to feel good about against the top club in the NL… this run we’ve been on is really something, man, on one hand I’m wondering when our luck will run out and in the other I’m thinking, “told ya so…”

Elsewhere: Otto Isaac is a man on a mission – he put his 20th ball over the fence today in a 4-3 loss against the NL West-leading San Francisco Seals… if the ol’ boy can keep it up he might work his way into the NL Boyce conversation before this thing is all said and done… Also hitting his 20th today was Aitor Cubas, his was one of 5 homers for Seattle in their 13-4 win over the Golden State Warriors, with one of the others coming from one of my sentimental favorites… FRODO GONZALES – get some, Frodo, do it for Middle Earth… Seattle, despite having a duo that is every bit as good (maybe better) than the Franzone-Puente combo in Pittsburgh, is languishing with the bottom of the pack so far this season with an abysmal 38-48 record. Also of note… Dallas’ Jo Jo Jackson hit his 18th of the year in a 6-5 win over Portland, and also added two more Ks to his league-leading total of 149, or, if you’re counting, 48 more than the next guy).

All-Star Rosters Announced…
For the American League, the roster includes:
SP Tristan Hutchison (CAR) - 7-3, 3.46 ERA, 78.0 IP, 1.17 WHIP, 9.7 K/9, 2.0 WAR

.
And, some low-key funny news: Golden State's Cristian Escamilla has a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an injury he sustained while trying to win a prize by knocking all the bottles over at the county fair. Now the good news: the injury, which was thought to be more serious, will keep the Warriors starting pitcher out of action for only about 9 months. So, the funny thing, or curious thing as it were, is that Escamilla is a 16-year old International Signee out of Venezuela, who, I imagine was at the fair trying to impress some young lass, when this whole thing went down… so, no parking lot rubbernecking for the kid, and, now, because of his misfortune, no more baseball for a while…

87 of 162: PJ Edmonds (8-7, 3.58) @ Harvey Allen (7-5, 3.04)
Win, 5-2
. Dom Crawford bounces back from what had been, up to this point, a ho-hum series with a 2-run dinger, Harvey went 7 strong innings of shutout baseball while fanning 7 batters (including Franzone, twice), Anaconda scored twice, OH HONG drove in his 39th, and Funky gave up two runs in two innings of work (maybe he’s not ready…). We’ll enter the break on a 3-game winning streak against the best club in the NL, feeling footloose, and fancy free. Elvira will be happy, the houseboat will be stocked with my favorite whiskey, and I’ll savor this new-found job security for as long as I can.

Notes: We enter the all-star break with a .552 winning percentage, a game up on Montreal and in 2nd on the NL East table, Anaconda is second in the NL for WAR, Rad is 2nd for ERA at 2.49, Kordell is 1st in wins at 10 (how did he not make the all-star team), and we are the toast of South Beach… life is good. Of course, it can’t only be good news… Saucerman will miss the rest of July and most of August with a strained anterior cruciate ligament. Bummer biscuits – we’re gonna miss his contribution for sure.

Oh, and Yan made a trade… The San Diego Chargers have made a deal sending 31-year-old RHP Rush Briskin to the Miami United for 23-year-old minor-league 2B Chin-Wei Chang, 22-year-old minor league C Michael Mohamed and 22-year-old minor league C Blake Hunter. Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out. Briskin has gone to the hill for 18 relief appearances this season, while notching a 2-1 record with a 1.46 ERA. The Miami reliever has limited opposing batters to a .188 batting average. Say what you want about Ms. Welli – my assistant GM is a supreme mustache collector!

2080 Season (7/9 – All-Star Game)

American League All-Stars @ National League All-Stars
Illumina Park, San Diego, CA
AL Wins, 5-1
. Former King of Los Angeles, and current Giant of Vancouver, Ethan Mullens, went gonzo (and took home MVP honors) on his former league with a 2 for 2 performance that saw him drive in two runs and scored once from the leadoff spot… he drove in the 1st & last runs the American League scored during the game (all within the first 2-innings of play). Pablo Madera (AL-CAR) also went 1 for 3 with a run while AL pitchers, Rad Taylor (MIA) and Julen Morales (STL), both pitched scoreless innings with Morales registering 2 K’s in 17 pitches… Rad posted 0’s across the board on 9 total pitches in the 4th inning. SAC FLY RBIs from Aitor Cubas (SEA) & Palmer Parker (SEA) would round out the AL’s scoring while 1B Quinn Charvat drove in the NLs lone run in the bottom of the 9th on a PH opportunity… Notables that didn’t do much – Tom Franzone (PIT) went 0 for 1 with a BB and a K, Dontrell Gay (LAK) went 0 for 1, Otto Isaac (LAK) went 1 for 1 with nothing to show for it… Anaconda went 1 for 3 and left two runners stranded.

2080 Season (7/12 – 7/14)

Phoenix Suns (50-37, .575, 1st NL West) @ Miami United (48-39, .552, 2nd NL East)
After a couple of years spent playing second fiddle to Los Angeles, Phoenix took the first chair in 2078, held on to it, by 4-games, in 2079, and are doing their level best to repeat that in 2080… but, in a division that houses the Los Angeles Kings and the new-look San Francisco Seals, that may be harder than it looks. The Suns are getting it done with offense – they are either the best of the NL or close to it, depending on who you talk to – and above-average pitching. They get on base (1st), hit for average (1st), score at will (2nd), and have the second-best OPS at .778 as a unit. This isn’t the type of club you can contain, but with a starting rotation that is top-heavy, and with a bullpen that doesn’t look like they’re built for the playoffs, you can outpace them if you get their starters out early enough. That’s what we’ll need to do here – outpace them… and our starting rotation has the gas to do it if they can make their pitches. It’s always interesting to see how clubs come out of the gate in the 2nd half… if we can display something close to the form we had before the all-star break, we’ll be in good shape to do something magical to close out the 2080 campaign.

88 of 162: Jack Sanchez-Flores (7-5, 3.38) @ Kordell Littles (10-4, 2.63)
Win, 5-3
. Kordell pitched 6 shutout innings before giving up 2 runs in the 7th, Dom Crawford, who leads the team in mustache wax, went 2 for 3 with 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, and a walk, and OH HONG hit his 8th HR of the season. Crawford and OH HONG both get 2-out RBIs, we stole four bags (Magmo 2x, and 1 each for Gordon & Manookian), Johnny Dial picked up his 18th save despite giving up a late run in the 9th. Solid win in front of the home crowd here… off on the good foot.

Elsewhere: RF Boogie Barnett, of the San Diego Chargers, went 3 for 4 with 2 dingers, 5 RBIs, including his first GRAND SLAM as a pro during his clubs 9-6 win over the Montreal Alouettes. It’s difficult not to peg this guy as an all-time great in the making… he really has it all – great fielding, great at-bats, and he was born & raised in San Dimas, CA… the world is his oyster. LF Romeo Fernandez, of the Orlando Solar Bears (Jacksonville’s Triple-A club), went 2 for 3 with 2 HRs, 6 RBIs, a walk, and, like Boogie, one of those jacks was a GRAND SLAM – Orlando won the match by a score of 15-3 over the Tulsa Drillers. And, lastly, rounding out the double-jack club for the day, RF Cannon Leatherman, of the San Marcos Supremos, went 2 for 3 with 2 dingers, 2 RBIs, 3 runs, and 2 BBs during his clubs dominant 8-2 win over the Bowling Green Lickers in Bush League action. With the win, San Marcos improved to 49-41 on the year, but are still sitting in 4th place of the BL Justice Division and are 9 games behind the division-leading Mississippi Hound Dogs.

89 of 162: Josh Allen (8-6, 4.24) @ Harvey Allen (8-5, 2.83)
Win, 2-0
. Whoa (visualize Keanu as “Ted” Theodore Logan)… we shut out, arguably, the best offense in the National League… by committee. 4 innings from Harvey, 3 innings from the “not-so-wild thing” Hunter Vaughn, a couple of batters for Ardolph (K’d them both), and save #19 for DialManookian went 4 for 4 with an RBI, Bill Gordon drove the other run in, and we get the hard-fought victory despite OH HONG, Anaconda, and Crawford combining for a 0 for 10 day (with 4 K’s). Listen, I don’t know what’s going on here – we really had no business winning this one, but we’ll take it – because, that’s what you do. You take the good. You take the bad. You take them both and there you have…

Elsewhere: My precious, Frodo Gonzales, of the Seattle Sounders, went 5 for 6 with 2 RBIs in Seattle’s 10-3 victory over the Chicago Fire… he hit one two-bagger and four singles for the game. In the same contest, Parker put a two-bagger on the board of his own, and Aitor Cubas went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. With the win, Seattle improves to 42-48 on the year – I honestly have no idea why they aren’t having a better season considering their lineup. Also, Chicago traded Josiah Kawka to the Denver Miners for a couple of minor leaguers in a move that makes ZERO sense. For Chicago, I mean. Denver needs pitching, and they got it for cheap. H/T to Shawna, I guess.

90 of 162: Robert Hawkins (6-8, 4.54) @ Murray Wagner (5-4, 5.40)
Win, 5-3
. Sweep! Over the top club in the NL West! We are basically a lock to win the Championship now, right? Wagner went a strong 8 innings, allowed 3 runs, walked 3, and fanned 4, Magmo went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, and OH HONG drove in his 41st run of the season (on a double – his 9th). Dial picked up his 20th save in this one… we’re the best ever. We’re the most brutal and vicious, and most ruthless champion there's ever been. There's no team can stop us. Los Angeles is a conqueror? No, we’re Alexander, they’re no Alexander. We’re the best ever.

Elsewhere: Angry Eloy, now of the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai, went 3 for 5 with a two-bagger, 2 jacks, 3 riblets, and 3 runs during his clubs 10-5 win over the Tallahassee Tomcats. The Dutch Antillean Donut Eating Champion now has 23 HRs so far this year and is on pace to send 37 balls over the fence (he put 43 of them out last year (24 as a Donnybrook & another 19 as a Hound Dog)). May he play this game forever… one of my favorites in the save.

Notes: Man, we really came out of the gates running hot – 2 games behind the Pittsburgh Franzone’s and picking up steam. The Houston Texans are next on the docket, in our building, and, I gotta believe that our turn to sit atop the table will follow… Also, take a gander at some of the statistical leaders in StrangeVerse and our clubhouse view…

2080 Season (7/15 – 7/17)

Houston Texans (44-48, .478, 4th NL West) @ Miami United (51-39, .567, 2nd NL East)
At 44-48 and going nowhere fast, the Houston Texans should turn their attention to next year, to their development program, and to adding some depth to a club that has been riddled with key injuries to their starting rotation. SP Mirko Samsonenko, who they got from us for RP Ardolph Goldberg, is out for the season with a ruptured UCL, and SP Gabe Uruburu recently went down with a shoulder strain – Gabe will be back in short order, but if they lean on him too heavy in Mirko’s absence, the notoriously fragile Uruburu will undoubtedly make another prolonged appearance on the IL. Even without their top two arms, Houston’s staff has been good, giving glimpses of what could have been, and if they’re lucky, what will be, to their fans – they rank 3rd in Starters ERA, 7th in Bullpen ERA, and have given up the 4th fewest runs in the NL so far this season. Offensively, they have some work to do where their loose collection of over-the-hill vets (3B Mustafa Boltz and DH Wasp Hauck come to mind) and future greats (SS Woody Cobb & C Ichabod Dugdale) have not combined to do anything of note – 10th in OBP, 11th in runs… for us, these guys represent an opportunity to keep the good times rolling provided that we stay focused on our craft and take advantage of their weaknesses. This is easier said than done – focus, for a young club like ours, is a fickle business – in one moment we’re reaping phenomenal returns on our investments and in the next we find ourselves mired in a malaise that is as difficult to define as it is to navigate away from.

91 of 162: Mark Borello (1-1, 4.65) @ Rad Taylor (9-5, 2.49)
Win, 5-3
. Houston’s Sam Kilgour went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI against Rad, but it wouldn’t be enough to lead his team to victory in this contest as Rad went 8, with only 3 earned, and fanned 7 batters in a winning effort (his 10th of the year). Dom walked twice and drove one in, Anaconda scored, Magmo hit his 6th homer, OH HONG hit his 9th, and, as a team, we hit for the cycle with Norton putting the elusive triple on the board in the 4th inning off Borello. Dial picked up his 21st save of the year on a smashing, 21-pitch, 3 K top of the 9th, and, the good times don’t seem to have an end in sight…

Elsewhere: RF Tony Voorhis (PHX) went 3 for 4 with 2 jacks and 4 RBIs in Phoenix’s 13-4 win over the Philadelphia 76ers – I don’t make a habit of rooting for the Suns, but, taking a game off a division rival, at this stage of the season? I can get with that. SP Bubacarr Garba, of the Calgary Flames (a Montreal affiliate), pitched a complete-game, 5-hit shutout against the Staten Island Killer Bees – Garba is now 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA in two International League starts this season.

92 of 162: Adrian Hollyfield (1-2, 3.04) @ Julian Horne (10-2, 2.40)
Win, 6-2
. Anaconda went 2 for 3 with a 2-run dinger and a walk, OH HONG hit a GRAND SLAM in the bottom of the 1st that pretty much carried the day, and Horne sleepwalked through a stress-free, workmanlike performance while milking his OH HONG provided cushion for all it was worth over 7 innings of work. Norton hit his 2nd triple in as many days but the club couldn’t get the double required to make it our second team cycle in a row, and former Texan, RP Ardolph Goldberg struck out every batter he faced over the final two innings of the game on only 24 total pitches… something tells me that the Houston brass would happily travel back in time to undo the Mirko trade right about now – if that was something you could do without, you know, scrambling your human essence at a molecular level.

Elsewhere: Seattle’s Palmer Parker went 4 for 4 with a GRAND SLAM in the Sounders 7-2 win over the New York Jets… the HR was the 17th round-tripper for Parker so far this season, here’s to hoping that he will get hot in the second half and take a run at Jonah Dove and Jo Jo Jackson in the AL HR race… Down on the farm – SP Santino Andrade, of your Havana Sugar Kings, pitched an 8-inning, 4-hit gem allowing 0 runs while fanning 4 in a 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks. He could be a Miami mainstay as early as next season with the way he’s been developing. LF Franklin Ratterman, of the Birmingham Billy’s, had himself a game in a 9-2 win over the Columbia Blowfish in Bush League play – the undrafted North Carolina State Alum went 2 for 5 with 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs in the win and has now amassed 8 total jacks in 90 games with a subpar .197 average, which, perfectly illustrates why no one took a flier out on the kid despite having a cool surname.

93 of 162: Abe Meinecke (9-8, 3.92) @ Kordell Littles (11-4, 2.63)
Win, 6-2
. SWEEP! Kordell dealt for 7-innings and fanned 7 would be hitters, Anaconda finished 2 for 4 with a triple (our 3rd as a team in as many days), and we earn our second straight home sweep. OH HONG finished 2 for 4 and scored, Noyola drove two in before leaving with a minor injury (merely a flesh wound), and Ardolph labored through 2 ½ innings before handing the pill off to Dial who secured his 22nd save on FOUR PITCHES striking out the only batter he faced.

Elsewhere: Los Angeles SP Aiden Jensen pitched a complete-game, 3-hitter and fanned 10 hapless hitters in the Kings’ 6-1 win over the Montreal Alouettes while managing to stay dialed in despite the three Hollywood starlets seated in the Diamond Club who were batting their lashes at the stud from Juneau for the majority of the game – 2080 has seen him take a step back from his 19-win 2079 season, but there’s still plenty of time for him to go on a run and given his command during this outing his prospects are looking up… CF Vance Dudgeon, of the Atlanta Falcons, made the record books with a 3 HR day ina 9-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys – for context he’s the 228th player to accomplish the feat in StrangeVerse history (Heathcote Kinton (PDX), Senol Delalto (I don't know who he is but do see that he's back in Triple-A right now), and Jarel White (BRK) accomplished the feat in 2079)… Cowboys RF King Disney went 5 for 5 with two two-baggers and 3 RBIs for Dallas in the same contest… 1B Hunfredo Tavares (DEN) and SP Cam Murphy (BRK) engaged in some silliness that resulted in a bench-clearing brawl and will miss 5 & 6 games respectively as a result – no significant punches were landed because, generally speaking, baseball players can’t fight very good…and lastly, SP Mitch Claxton, of the Roanoke Racoons, pitched a NO-NO in a 1-0 win over the Kalamazoo Kraken in Bush League play – the former Miami by way of Orlando big leaguer fanned 9 during the historic effort. In looking at the Bush League history, I noticed that there has been 6 perfect games thrown, which is, well, pretty neat. With little control and basically no movement on his pitches, this one is a bit of a pleasant surprise to be filed under ‘every dog has his day’.

Notes: We’ve, sort of, taken over 1st place on the NL East table – by winning percentage on two fewer games played than the Pittsburgh Steelers – and with three more at home, against the very-good Montreal Alouettes, it'll be everything we can do to keep it.

2080 Season (7/19 – 7/21)

Montreal Alouettes (50-45, .526, 3rd NL East) @ Miami United (54-39, .581, 1st NL East)
The first thing that sticks out about the Montreal Alouettes is how bad they are offensively. They are, for all intents and purposes, the worst offensive club in the National League – 11th in runs scored, 12th everywhere else. It’s true that two of their best offensive contributors are currently listed on the IL – RF Mack Ramirez has a partially torn labrum that he suffered nearly a month ago during a trip to Carolina that will keep him out for a couple more weeks and 3B Raymond Haynes is listed as DtD for a couple more weeks after suffering a concussion during a wild and wholly unathletic headfirst slide attempt. But that’s not the whole story here – they might climb a few rungs if those guys weren’t hurt, sure, but they’d still be a piss poor offensive unit. It’s their pitching that keeps them afloat – 2nd in Starters ERA, 4th in Bullpen ERA, 1st in FIP, and 2nd in runs against. This motley assortment of flame-throwing ne’er-do-wells operate with the precision of a well-oiled blackjack dealing crew that are moved in and out of the card-dealing rotation by their mad scientist pit boss, Pitching Coach Ryan Burns, who, at 64-years old and with an excellent reputation, has an uncanny ability to make sure that the scale is always tipped judiciously in the house’s favor. So, to win, to keep this magical streak going, we’ll need our pitching to stay focused and our offense to not waste a single opportunity that slips by Burns’ watchful eye. We’re 4-5 against these guys so far this season – playing with house money – but, given the law of averages, it’s entirely possible that the house will strike back, move us out of the penthouse suite, and take away our free buffet coupons if we fail to bring all of our weapons to bear during this 3-game set.

94 of 162: Tchaiber Gakhokidze (1-0, 5.19) @ Harvey Allen (8-5, 2.73)
Loss, 3-0
. The only thing more confusing than the pronunciation of Tchaiber’s last name tonight was his splitter and despite a good, solid, and focused effort from Harvey (7 innings, 6 hits, 0 earned, 9 K’s), Montreal’s late offensive shenanigans (3 scored in the top of the 9th) against RP Adam Sullivan was all that would be required to embarrass us in front of our recently rabble-rousing fans. Anaconda hit a double, Steve Green, back up from Havana, went 0 for 2, OH HONG got a couple of singles added to his permanent record, and we left 6 runners stranded over the course of the game. Harlem Peterson’s run-scoring double broke the tie and it was all downhill from there…

Elsewhere: 3B Pepper Grant (LAG) went 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer in the Galaxy’s 6-5 loss against the Golden State Warriors – your boy is hanging on to his post as a bona fide major league ballplayer by the skin of his teeth at this point… .217/.274/.296, 5 dingers, 33 RBIs, and a 0.1 WAR isn’t enough to get it done at this level. But, as they say, he was born to be a captain of men, is a great presence in the clubhouse (despite the unfortunate circumstances that surrounded his night club side hustle’s failure) and sets a great example for the young guys when it comes to work ethic. He’s also one of my faves – so, I’m biased – but, the realist in me knows that our boy, the one, the only PEPPER GRANT is likely headed to the Bush League next season as he slowly meanders towards the finish line of what has been a fun career.

95 of 162: Hudson Dorsch (10-4, 2.74) @ Rad Taylor (10-5, 2.53)
Loss, 4-3
. Man, not this again – Rad pitches well, 7-innings of work with 3 earned runs, but the club can’t get much going against the opposition and therefore fails to provide him with the necessary support to come away with the win here – RP Ardolph Goldberg comes away with the loss (he gave up the game-winner in the top of the 12th), Magmo hit a solo HR, OH HONG hit a 2-run dinger, and Steve Green finished 0 for 4. This was a tough loss – these 1-run games have been killing us all season… we’re 7-18 in these kinds of contests now. Of course, it could be worse – IT CAN ALWAYS BE WORSE – we could be Denver who is a league-worst 5-22 in 1-run games.

Elsewhere: SP Bubacar Garba (CAL) was at it again for the Calgary Flames (a Montreal affiliate) in a complete-game, 2-hit shutout that included 13 K’s – the Flames defeated the Hartford Whalers by a score of 4-0 thanks, largely, to the efforts of Buba-G. Our own, SP Adony Moya, of your BARBADOS TRIDENTS, pitched a complete-game, 6-hitter where he allowed only one runner to plate and fanned 7 during a 1-0 victory over the Mobile Mallards. The young Columbian looks to be a scant year or two away from making the big club… our pitching pantry is so stuffed right now, maybe Yan will use the kid as trade bait and bring in some offensive talent to develop. Who knows… And, lastly, the amazingly named, 2B Randy Ranger, went 3 for 3 with THREE HOMERS, 4 total RBIs, and a free pass in his Columbia Blowfish’s 5-1 win over the Dearborn Dill Pickles. Ranger got some AB’s for Jacksonville and Brooklyn before taking his talents to the Bush League – his ‘career’ MLB average is a paltry .195 but he did manage to put 6 balls out of the park though…

96 of 162: Mikhail Poppen (10-5, 2.90) @ Murray Wagner (6-4, 5.16)
Win, 3-0
. We avoid abject embarrassment thanks, in large part, to Murray’s phenomenal complete-game, 4-hit shutout performance that included 9 K’s and a shouting match with Harlem Peterson after a pitch zoomed a bit too far inside. Gordon finished at 2 for 4 with a run-scoring two-bagger, Anaconda scored, OH HONG went 2 for 4, Green fielded both 2B & SS AND got a hit (1 for 9 in this series), and Manookian caught Randall Berger trying to get cute on an OF assist that gunned the ol’ boy down at 3rd. It was, undoubtedly, nice to avoid the sweep, but at the end of it all, Montreal accomplished what they set out to do, Pittsburgh reclaimed their perch atop the NL East, and we are back down to 2nd on the table. It’s a sad state of affairs indeed.

Notes: Palmer Parker (SEA) took home Batter of the Week honors in the American League while Tony Voorhis (PIT) did the same in the National League – Parker put 4 balls out of the park in the last 7 days and Tony batted .444 with 4 jacks of his own. Next up for us is a trip to St. Louis where we’ll engage in a 4-game parlay on their turf followed by a visit to Jacksonville… neither club represents anything to worry about, but, given our ability to underperform, it’ll be on us to get some good results over the next 7 on the road.

Talking Awesome, and thanks

Brilliant project, inspired me to "dust off" OOTP XX and do something in a similar vein. Started wioth the 1920 season, and an inaugural draft where MLB franchises were stocked with randomized players spanning all of baseball history. Any rookies that are added each season, will be randomized in the same fashion, in addition there are fictional rookies also in the mix.
I hope to get my project's level of age to the same level of age as comparable to yours, in time.

All the best,
Travis

Cool, man! Do it! This game is so fun and engrossing that it’s ridiculous. And check out Stealofhome’s work - I built this off his framework, just edited it down to my liking. His set up is intense, I now use it as a base for each new save I create.

2080 Season (7/22 – 7/25)

Miami United (55-41, .573, 2nd NL East) @ St. Louis Rams (47-53, .470, 6th NL East)
With their glory days seemingly in the mail, with blue-chip prospects like C Mo Brokaw, SP Grant Slattery, and SP Aiden O’Brien all primed to become stars, St. Louis has been content to ride out the 2080 season as their crops ready themselves to bare fruit. For now, this means that, outside of leadoff man Mike Duncan, the Rams don’t have a lot of marquee guys on the big club – just a collection of stiffs delivering a middle-of-the-pack offensive performance (rated 6th in the NL) and a dreadful, 11th ranked pitching performance. They have been okay since the all-star break posting a 6-4 record since the midsummer classic and, with only 4 ½ games separating them and the 3rd place Philadelphia 76ers may be looking to make their move towards semi-respectability. It’ll be a tall order for them with the Pink Tops in town – we’re 8-2 over our last 10 contests, have a solid 23-19 road record, and are 12-3 in the month of July. Simply put, we’re a pretty damn good ball club right now.

97 of 162: Julian Horne (11-2, 2.41) @ John Aivazian (3-8, 6.27)
Loss,4-2
. Aivazian was solid – he dealt for 8 innings, only allowed two runs, and fanned 9 Pink Tops while C Mo Brokaw went 2 for 3 with a double, 3 RBIs and a walk… Horne was fine – he gave up 4 over 7.1 innings of work – but our offense, outside of Anaconda who drove in two on a double, was nonexistent. SS Steve Green went 0 for 3 with 3 Ks – that’s just embarrassing. There really wasn’t a lot to point to in this one – we were flat, gave them some really bad At-bats, and got the result we earned.

Elsewhere: Former King, SP Paul Yeager, pitched a complete game, 1-hit shutout for Seattle in a 6-0 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Yeager, who registered 5 Ks during the game, got 3 of them courtesy of LF Jo Jo Jackson who busied himself by hacking away at anything thrown in his general direction. RF Aitor Cubas (SEA) barley missed hitting for the cycle during the game as he went 4 for 4 with a two-bagger, a triple, and TWO DINGERS.

98 of 162: Kordell Littles (12-4, 2.63) @ Dimitri Pimentel (7-9, 4.73)
Win, 6-3
. Kordell came through for us here – 7 solid innings, with 2 earned and 7 K’s, Magmo was responsible for 3 of our 6 runs on a 2 for 3 performance with a two-bagger and a run, and Jerome Dial picked up his 23rd save of the season. We’ll take it – a nice bounce back from our loss yesterday and hopefully the start of another streak.

Elsewhere: RF Tom Franzone (PIT) hit his 29th long fly ball of the season in a 3-1, home win over the Brooklyn Citizens. The dinger moves Franzone into 1st on the HR table… with the Kings’ Dontrell Gay sitting at 28 and nipping on his heels. 2B Nuno Fuentes, of the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai, went 4 for 4 with a triple, 2 homers, 5 RBIs, and 3 runs in a 12-0 win over the Roanoke Raccoons… the 28-year old Montana native who went 0 for 1 in his only MLB at-bat is currently hitting .242 with 6 HRs and 18 RBIs in 56 games with Shreveport.

99 of 162: Harvey Allen (8-5, 2.56) @ Aiden O’Brien (4-9, 5.81)
Win, 2-0
. OH HONG’s 3 for 3 performance included a double and a timely run to complement Harvey’s incredible complete game, 4-hit shutout that included 9 K’s… we secured 3 doubles as a club (OH HONG, Crawford, and Magmo did the honors) but left 10 runners stranded for the game – Harvey, it would seem, was largely on his own in this one but acquitted himself quite nicely and now has 6 wins and 2 no decisions in his last 8 starts.

100 of 162: Rad Taylor (10-5, 2.59) @ Julen Morales (10-5, 2.71)
Win, 6-1
. We’d secure the series win on a complete game, 7 hit performance from Rad where he’d allow one runner to plate while fanning 6… Ethan Loy scored twice, OH HONG drove in two runs (one on a SAC FLY), Anaconda went 3 for 5 with a 2-run double, and we fielded 3 double plays as a unit. Rad improves to 11-5 on the season with and now has a 2.51 ERA as we managed to get this road trip kicked off beautifully.

Quick note: We’re now only 1 game behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and looking to re-establish ourselves as the team to beat in the NL East… up next on the docket is some interleague silliness against our in-state rival Jacksonville Jaguars who are currently in 3rd on the AL East table with a 46-56 record – we’re looking for the sweep.

2080 Season (7/26 – 7/28)

Miami United (58-42, .580, 2nd NL East) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (46-56, .451, 3rd AL East)
With their best position player (CF Page Sommers) and closer (Axel Beans) on the shelf for a stretch, the Jaguars are having a difficult time picking up the slack – and, if you add in the fact that 1B Ruben Zarate has started to slip at only 28-years old and that SP Matt Olston (11-7, 4.43, 95 ERA+) has lost a bit of movement off his fastball what you get is a team that is headed in the wrong direction. Their offense has been abysmal – 12th in AVG, OPS, bWAR, wOBA, and HRs, and 11th everywhere else – and their staff, while serviceable, has not been able to close that offensive gap with any regularity. On the bright side, they have their payroll under control (20th of 24) and could be a major player in free agency during the offseason if the miserly owner, Limerick Wasson, would get involved (he’s pretty hands-off) and open up his pocketbook a bit (he’s a 70-year old economizer who’s unlikely to change)… and, who knows, after three straight losing seasons (counting this one if it continues to go this poorly), maybe he will loosen up a bit. I mean, you can’t take it all with you, right?

101 of 162: Murray Wagner (7-4, 4.56) @ Carson Vespa (8-7, 4.94)
Loss, 7-6
. Murray battled through a sluggish, 129-pitch start, where he allowed 6 total runs and THREE HOMERS… that’s not going to get it done, but good on him for staying in there to save our bullpen for another day. SS Steve Green, the time-traveling goofball from outer space, hit a run-scoring double, his 3rd of the season, in the top of the 9th to give us some hope, Manookian repeated that during the same frame to even things up, and Johnny Dial, who’s usage rate of late may have gotten away from us, gave up the ghost in the bottom of the 9th to give the Jacksonville fans a much-needed walk-off victory to celebrate. If you’re counting – we’re now 0-4 in the battle for Florida this season (Hanging Curveball-Gate, 2080).

102 of 162: Julian Horne (11-3, 2.56) @ Roger Baumann (0-2, 3.86)
Win, 4-1
. Well, we finally beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, so I can take solace in that, somewhat unsatisfying, fact… Horne gave us an 8.1 inning, 5-hit, 1 earned performance with 5 K’s, Anaconda did his thing in a 1 for 3 effort that included an RBI and two free passes, and Norton went 1 for 2 with an RBI double. OH HONG scored, Magmo sacrificed his stat line with a SAC FLY, Gordon picked up his 30th steal, and Dial, who we refuse to rest, picked up his 24th save in a 5-pitch effort to the last batter of the night. Dial got the guy to ground out… luckily.

Elsewhere: RF King Disney (DAL) went 3 for 5 with 2 jacks (HIS FIRST TWO HRs THIS YEAR), 4 RBIs, and 3 runs in the Cowboys’ 11-1 win over the defending champions from San Diego – LF Jo Jo Jackson did not contribute to the win…3B Dontrell Gay pulled even with Tom Franzone at 29 HRs during a 3 for 5 day that included 2 runs and 2 RBIs – Los Angeles won the game by a score of 8-2 over the struggling Seattle Sounders.

Note: Yan Welli, after using every last ounce the guy had to give, traded Johnny Dial to the Carolina Panthers for 32-year old 3B Germane Sturdivant. Sturdivant has only played in 18 games for the Panthers, but has hit .386 with 3 HRs and 11 RBIs during that stretch… If I’m honest, I have no real idea why Yan pulled the lever on this one. I guess it’s on me – if you give a girl the keys, expect her to drive it.

103 of 162: Kordell Littles (13-4, 2.62) @ Matt Olston (11-7, 4.43)
Win, 4-2
. So, we finish the season series with Jacksonville at 2-4, which, as you can imagine, is a disappointing result even if we managed to get the final say in this one… Kordell did what we’ve come to expect – 7 solid innings of work, 8 hits, 1 earned, and 4 K’s, and Anaconda put on a bit of a show in a 3 for 4 performance that included a triple and 2 runs. Manookian was the hero for us tonight – his 2-run double in the top of the 9th brought this one home for us… he went 1 for 5 on the day, but that one was a clutch piece of hitting – maybe we’ll let him sit in business class on the way home. Not sure, depends on what the inflight meal options are.

Notes:
We’re still a game back in the NL East with Pittsburgh just pacing us now and will head home for some more Interleague silliness to welcome the New York Jets to town for 4 games, including a doubleheader to kick it off due to a makeup game being scheduled in our park after a storm caused a cancellation while we were in the city to play them earlier this season… 1B Pablo Madera (CAR) won player of the week honors in the American League on the back of a 14 for 30 stretch that included three dingers and 7 RBIs, while SS Jess Alford (SF) took home that honor in the National League on a 14 for 22 week. The weekly power rankings are out and we’ve made the top five – sweet! The ranking is as follows: 1st – Pittsburgh, 2nd Phoenix (gross), 3rd Miami (OK, now we’re talking), 4th Toronto (might be the favorite come playoff time), and 5th Los Angeles Kings (all three of the clubs that I’ve served as a GM made the cut!).

2080 Season (7/29 – 7/31)

New York Jets (46-58, .442, 5th AL East) @ Miami United (60-43, .583, 2nd NL East)
The New York Jets are basically the Jacksonville Jaguars, flip-flopped. They have a good, and at times better than good, offense that is led by 2B Scott Kaszuba from the leadoff spot and anchored by the power alley of 3B Jake DeChamps and DH Neil Jahraus. As a club, the unit is 4th in AVG and OBP, and 5th everywhere else except HRs where they rank 7th. The problem they have is their pitching – 10th in runs against, 12th in Starters ERA – where, as a result of having a good group of relievers, they’ve managed to rank as high as 10th overall in the American League in 2080. In short, with the prize being the playoffs, the New York Jets have been directionally challenged – three straight months of losing records after starting the season off with a whimper at 13-13 in April… here is a club that is stuck in the mud, wheels spinning, and with no hope of getting their jalopy back on the road in time to earn a podium place on this never-ending race of a baseball season.

103 of 162: Harvey Allen (9-5, 2.37) @ Roberto Salazar (2-4, 3.92) ~Make-up Game played @ Carnival Cruise Lines Park~
Win, 7-5
. Harvey was just okay – or less so depending on how seriously you take the game of baseball – and gave up 5 runs in 6.1 innings of work, Ardolph Goldberg picked up his second win in relief on 2.2 innings of work where he surrendered no hist while notching 4 K’s, Anaconda led the offense on the strength of his 2 for 4 performance that included a 2-run homer, and Steve Green, fresh out of the DeLorean, went 1 for 3 with a solo shot and 2 runs. Sacrifice Fly for OH HONG, a yo-yo double play for OH HONG and Sturdivant, and we get the win despite committing three errors as a squad. We’ll take it.

104 of 162: Maximo Mercado (0-0, 0.00) @ Rad Taylor (11-5, 2.51)
Win, 9-3
. Rad gave up 3 runs in a complete game, 6 hit effort and fanned 6 from the bump, Dom Crawford went 3 for 5 with a 2-run moonshot, and OH HONG went 2 for 4 with a 3-run double. Green finished at 2 for 4 with a run, we stole two bags (Manookian (#26) and Gordon (#33)), got a SAC BUNT from Sturdivant, a SAC FLY from Gordon, and a perfectly executed Noyola-Green-Hong double play to end the game. A satisfactory result here as we win both games of the doubleheader.

Elsewhere: RF Evan Colon, of your Barbados Tridents, went 2 for 4 with 2 homers, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs in their 8-2 win over the Tallahassee Tanagers… Colon is one of our top OF prospects and, since being drafted 39th overall in June, has hit .193 with 3 HRs and 15 RBIs in AA action (look, the kid will get there – it’s only been 36 games, he’s still dialing it in). The kid sure does look sharp in a Barbados kit though…

105 of 162: Thor Rogers (6-7, 4.55) @ Murray Wagner (7-4, 4.78)
Win, 6-5
. Murray dug deep over 7.1 innings of work and only allowed two runs despite letting his pitch count get away from him in the 6th and 7th, Dom hit a 2-run dinger, Green went 2 for 4 and scored, Gordon drove two in, OH HONG hit a double and committed his 2nd error of the season, and we closed this one out on yet another Noyola-Green-Hong double play. RP Adam Sullivan earned his 2nd win of the year in relief on 20 total pitches.

106 of 162: Ondino Orellana (5-7, 5.42) @ Julian Horne (12-3, 2.46)
Win, 9-3
. Whoa… the ever-elusive 4-game sweep achievement was unlocked! Horne gave us 7 solid innings of work, Dom Crawford was at it again in a 3 for 5 effort that included a double and 3 RBIs, OH HONG went 2 for 4 and scored, Anaconda went 1 for 3, scored twice, and drove one in, and we turned three expertly crafted double plays none of which were the Noyola-Green-Hong combination we'd seen so much of lately. Steve Green, in keeping with his style of delivering uneven results, went 0 for 4 with 3 Ks today – the kid was sullen, y’all.

Notes: LF Jo Jo Jackson (DAL) took home AL Batter of the Month honors – the power hitter bashed 12 home runs in July… and we are back on the top of the pops by a ½ game over the Pittsburgh Steelers, on a 6-game winning streak, and playing the best baseball of our lives. The top three hitters in the HR race loos like this – Tom Franzone (30), Dontrell Gay (29), Jo Jo Jackson (28)… should be a fun one. We have 18 home games and 11 on the road in August – the world, it would seem, is our oyster and we’re looking for pearls. I don't know what that means either...

2080 Season (8/1 – 8/11)

8/1 – 8/4: Pittsburgh Steelers (64-44, .593, 2nd NL East) @ Miami United (64-43, .598, 1st NL East)
Our first of four 4-game sets in the month of August comes against, arguably, the best club in the National League. Pittsburgh’s starting rotation is among the best in the majors – most of the baseball punditry would put them at 3rd best in the NL and no lower than 5th in the MLB – and their bullpen represents no significant drop off in quality. Essentially, when you play these guys, working the count to get the starters out of the game doesn’t always yield the intended result – the bullpen mostly throws beebee’s not beach balls. If their pitching is built on precision, then their offense is where the art of Pittsburgh’s hustle really shines through – led by 1B Tom Franzone and RF Remildo Puente, this Steelers club gets on base with some ease and excels at putting balls way, way out of the park. Pittsburgh has made the playoffs for the last 10 season, have finished 1st in the NL East in 6 of the last 10 campaigns, and, here with their lowest total payroll on the books in 11 seasons, look like a real contender to bring a World Series title back to Steel City – and with a list of upcoming FA’s that includes SS Ray Gerhold (PHX) and CF Otto Isaac (LAK) due to come on the market in the offseason, Pittsburgh’s dynasty has a real opportunity to go from perennial playoff contender to perennial championship favorite.

107 of 162: Loss, 4-3. Two late RBIs from Anaconda weren’t enough to compensate for the two unearned runs we gave up… Pittsburgh’s SP Beau Skrivan left with an injury after facing only two batters, their bullpen performed as advertised… Franzone goes hitless. 5th loss of the season for Kordell.
108 of 162: Win, 7-2. Harvey Allen fanned 10, solo HR for Gordon opened the floodgates in the bottom of the 4th, team cycle with a double and a triple from Magmo.
109 of 162: Win, 7-2. Another, lights out, complete-game performance from Rad… his 3rd in a row. Manning sends two over the LF fence, Dom smashed a 2-run blast… all systems go. Franzone took the day off… weird.
110 of 162: Loss, 4-2. Murray fanned 12 but allows all four of Pittsburgh’s runs…two SAC FLYS for OH HONG plate our only runs, Franzone gets a hit but fans twice.

Notes: An uneven, split series for both clubs – neither offense did its thing as intended – the stars did not align properly and the offensive standouts, from each club, went through the motions with not much of note to show for it… maybe we can handle these guys in the playoffs on our depth, or their lack thereof. Franzone continues to struggle against us this year – we are either his kryptonite or there is no such thing. Time will tell. Around the Horn… Chicago, Dallas, and the Los Angeles Kings are all hot, 7-3 in there last 10, with only the Kings’ current run contributing anything meaningful to the scrum – they now sit a manageable 2 ½ games behind the Phoenix Suns… maybe they will stem the tide of the proposed sea change Phoenix intends to complete. Vancouver CF Ethan Mullens has started to turn the corner it would seem (he earned his 2nd PotW honor for his efforts last week) – a breakout 4 for 4 game with 2 HRs in a 6-5 loss against them served as a reminder to fans that his talents are still formidable – he now has 24 HRs (good enough for 7th in the league), 82 RBIs, and a 5.0 WAR – his club, however, is dumpster diving in the AL West and coming up empty on forgotten treasures… could/should be an interesting offseason in British Columbia.

Waiver Trade... I picked up Pepper Grant from the Los Angeles Galaxy on the cheap in a waiver trade… he doesn’t bring anything of real value to the table, but the cost was nada and I wanted him to taste the playoffs one more time in his less-than-illustrious career before shuffling along to the Bush League in short order… I’m nothing if not nostalgic...

8/5 – 8/6: Brooklyn Citizens (54-58, .482, 5th NL East) @ Miami United (66-45, .595, 1st NL East)
Ace Cam Murphy has been either injured or not very good this season, yet they keep him at the top of the rotation and hope/wish/pray for the best, I suppose…pitching is wretched, 10th overall in the NL, 10th in Starters ERA, 10th in runs against – tenth, tenth, tenth. The offense has some pop (6th in HRs) but not much else (11th in AVG, 10th in OPS, 10th in wOBA)… their baserunning prowess (+18.9) helps, just not enough to turn any heads. There’s really not much to see here – yet… their system ranks 5th, they have enough budget room to fill some gaps in the offseason, and, despite what is likely to go down as their 2nd losing season in a row, look to keep things in the green for another season… 39-year old 2B Rich Hamilton’s dastardly $28M contract expires at the end of the year, should be an interesting offseason in Brooklyn – but, this is now and we are here… we gotta get both of these.

111 of 162: Loss, 7-5. Anaconda went 3 for 5, hit a 2-run jack… everyone else was trash. A 2-run double from Big Money Hamilton in the top of the 7th kicked off a 5-run inning for the Citizens and that was all she wrote. We gave Pepper the start at 3rd and he went 0 for 4 (didn’t strikeout though).
112 of 162: Win, 5-4. Kordell held Brooklyn scoreless through 7 innings on a technicality… they scored 3 unearned in the top of the 1st (most fans stayed anyway). Crawford scored twice, 5 RBIs spread across 5 batters… you get an RBI, you get an RBI, and you get an RBI. Magmo’s was the important one – walkoff, 1-run, two-bagger from our resident Cajun.

Notes: Another home split and as meaningless as the last one – we’re on the treadmill here, still ½ game ahead of Steel City. Anaconda managed to wake up in the 1st game a little bit, OH HONG didn’t have the best homestand I’ve ever seen tho – we need more out of him, he’s on the cover of the program for Pete’s sake… Pepper starts his Miami tenure off with a whimper at 0 for 6 with 6 LOB (still no K’s, so, that’s cool). We’ll get a much-needed respite from the grind before donning the pink tops and heading to Phoenix – nothing like playing in the desert in August, the threat of death by dehydration is an old fave of mine. Around the Horn... Toronto is on the cusp of being the first club to reach 70 wins and with Jacksonville up next on the docket, it seems like a lock… and, yes, I’m aware that first to 70 is sort of a fake milestone but adding undue import to meaningless statistics is the lifeblood of any baseball man worth his weight in pewter. Last thing – not because it’s meaningful, but because I just noticed it while looking at something else – we have the best record in the league against left-handed pitching at 23-12 (tied with Toronto)… this is, of course, merely happenstance and not by design, unless Yan Welli is engaged in some sort of witchcraft math that I am not aware of.

8/8 – 8/11: Miami United (67-46, .593, t-1st NL East) @ Phoenix Suns (63-49, .563, 1st NL West)
Phoenix is an expertly crafted ballclub – a rip-roaring, full-tilt boogie offense that leads the NL in AVG and OBP, is 2nd in Runs, OPS, and wOBA, and who, at 4th in HRs, has enough power to keep your Starters honest. Their pitching is serviceable on the whole – they have a really good starting rotation, but their bullpen hasn’t performed as advertised earlier this season. Nothing doing though – the bullpen slippage rarely holds these guys back. The offensive core includes SS Ray Gerhold (who’s always in the NL Boyce Rigg conversation), LF Tony Voorhis (that lunchbox carrying everyman who consistently gets the job done), and C Rex Englestad (who hits for average, has a little bit of pop, and has an arm like a cannon)… and is bolstered on the periphery by guys like 3B Rueben Johnson and base-stealing, OBP machine, RF Lonzo Gonzo… basically, there are no easy outs when Phoenix occupies the dugout opposite yours.

113 of 162: Loss, 4-3. Two homers for Dom (and 3 riblets)… not enough though as Harvey stumbles in the 6th, Funky stumbles some more in the 7th, and OH HONG/Anaconda combine to go 0 for 7 on the day.
114 of 162: Win, 8-3. Rad stays dominant, though his complete-game streak came to an end, and Magmo’s triple and 3 runs led the offense. 15 hits for the club, two of them belonged to Pepper.
115 of 162: Loss, 8-3. Murray got shelled – 7 runs and 2 HRA charged to his account today… Big Rex is the culprit here – 2 for 3 with a 3-run homer.
116 of 162: Win, 10-2. Sturdivant’s GRAND SLAM in the top of the 5th sealed the deal and Anaconda’s solo HR gives me some hope that he will wake up from his current malaise.

Notes: Our start in August has been less-than-stellar… 5-5 with three straight splits – we’ve sputtered out of the gate, but the check engine light hasn’t come on just yet (though, it could be an issue with the fuses). All things considered treading water when you start off the month by playing ball against the top two NL clubs, both in 4-game parlays, isn’t the worst way to navigate the stretch – we did lose top billing in the NL East though and now find ourselves ½ game behind the Steelers. Around the Horn… Aitor Cubas hit 3 total HRs in Seattle’s series against the Chicago Fire and is making a run at HR leaders Dontrell Gay (33), Tom Franzone (31), and Jo Jo Jackson (31) – too bad his club is hanging back in the rear with the gear and without any hope of improving their lot in life before the book closes on the 2080 campaign. Our schedule will start to ease up during the 2nd half of the month with sets against ho-hum clubs like the Chicago Fire, San Diego Chargers, and Philadelphia 76ers on tap (Toronto is sandwiched in there though, so could be some rough seas when we visit them for a 3-game gut check).

2080 Season (8/12 – 8/15)

San Diego Chargers (52-64, .448, 5th NL West) @ Miami United (69-48, .590, 2nd NL East)
As the latest card-carrying member of the unlikeliest of unlikely to win a championship club (accomplished in 2079… side note: Portland was the last, last playoff seed to win a championship all the way back in 2065), San Diego’s performance so far this season is difficult to figure… they have a middle-of-the-road offense with an above-average OBP and a little bit of pop, rank 4th in runs scored, and have a rotation that, from top to bottom, ranks a few bips above average. Basically, they have the exact type of team make up that would typically yield results closer to or a tick above .500 but, as evidenced by their -9 performance against the Pythagorean, they just can’t get both sides of the ball on the same page often enough to win the ones they are supposed to win. Like the guy who spent all his lottery winnings on Carlos Rossi and ICP tickets and ended up more broke than he was prior to winning – the Chargers have spent all their hard-earned, but hardly deserved, championship glow on sports cars and movie cameos with no mind paid to honing their craft… this is the result of that behavior. Listen… climbing the mountain is tough, no doubt, but doing it twice, in a row, is even tougher and, so far, these San Diego boys aren’t up to the challenge.

117 of 162: Loss, 5-3. Bill Gordon hit a triple, giving us our lone offensive highlight in this one after watching Kordell get his tiddies liddy to the tune of 4 first-inning runs deflated the team before this we even got started… SD’s Sammie Fregoso, an old favorite of mine, went 2 for 4 with a HR and rookie sensation CF Mortecai Flenderson hit a two run single for the Chargers to secure the victory.

All hail the Mortecai... the best damn Goldblum facegen a boy can make...

118 of 162: Loss, 8-3. Crushed. Some guy named Martin Scott went 3 for 4 with two, two-baggers, a HR, and 4 RBIs for the Chargers… never heard of him but he had a uniform and everything. Yan is attempting to open an inquiry with the league office to figure out where he came from – we’re calling shenanigans. RINGER!
119 of 162: Win, 11-5. Rad was so-so here, but got it done… 7 K’s & 5 earned. 3-run moonshot for OH HONG, 2 dingers for Jeremy Collins (and 7 riblets)… Fregoso hit a double and scored twice for SD… 37-years old and still making it happen.
120 of 162: Win, 3-2. By the skin of our teeth here folks… 8 strong from Murray, 2 earned, 6 K’s… 2-run single for Steve Green (who recently changed his walk-up tune to 'the Power of Love' by Huey Lewis and the News)… OH HONG goes 2 for 4 with a run…

Notes: August is known for National Watermelon Day, being the month of Elvis’ death, National Smile Week, and for being the month that houses Halle Berry's (star of Swordfish!) birthday… maybe we should also designate it as the Floridian Split all of your 4-game series month too, eh? 7-7 in the month of August so far and without a series win to our names, I think it’s safe to say that we are, well, struggling a bit. But, it’s not all bad – we’re still just running in place, still only ½ game behind the Pittsburgh Franzone’s, and now are only the 3rd team to reach 70 wins so far this year (along with Toronto and, well, Pittsburgh). Speaking of Tom Franzone – he and Jo Jo Jackson are tied for 2nd in the HR race and only one behind the leader, Dontrell Gay. It's heating up… Up next we’ll welcome the Chicago Fire to town who are, at 8-2 over their last 10 contests, the hottest team in baseball – it’s a 3-game set, so, shiiiiiit, at least we can’t get another split.

2080 Season (8/16 – 8/18)

Chicago Fire (58-63, .479, 3rd AL East) @ Miami United (71-50, .587, 2nd NL East)
Here we have the AL East’s version of the San Diego Chargers – good, not great, pitching that drops off a bit once the starters hand it off and a good, not great, offense that hits it for average with a little bit of pop. Unlike San Diego, however, the Chicago Fire are exactly who they should be – hitting the Pyt on the nose, good at home, dreadful on the road, and just as bad against RHPs as the are against LHPs… there is really not much to see here. Just another middle-of-the-road club in a highway filled with them – not good enough to be a threat, not bad enough to be a patsy – and, certainly not the type of club you want to welcome to your house for some interleague silliness if selling tickets is one of your goals. On paper, we win this set easy – we win this set without effort, we could go through the motions and still come out smelling roses… but, since baseball isn’t played on paper, we roll the dice and see if we can slow down a club that is 8-2 over their last 10 games in real (pretend) life.

(previous post miscount, whatever) 122 of 162: Win, 9-3. 2 runs and 2 runs batted in for Steve Green, 7.1 innings & 3 earned from Horne, and a 2-run double from Anaconda (he’d get another RBI before all was said and done, too)… Hey! RBI double for Pepper too!
123 of 162: Win, 4-2. 6 innings and 6 Ks for Kordell (plus the Double-U), 3-run homer for Magmo, and, just like that, Chicago is no longer the hottest team in baseball. Easy come, easy go…Manookian struck out three times tonight – had we been on the road, we’d have put him on the bus back to Miami. Out of spite. Because you can’t strike out three times against Los Angeles Laker's flunky, DeJuan Burns… it’s not allowed.
124 of 162: Win, 8-1. Swept ‘em… two-bagger and a four-bagger for Manning, an RBI and two BBs for Dom, and a 7-inning, 1 earned effort out of Harvey. Only two Miami batters fail to score in this one – Anaconda & Pepper. Kinda sounds like a weird Brazilian / Asian fusion restaurant, doesn’t it? You know, the kind of place that sells Shark Carpaccio and is serious about it…

Notes: We managed to secure a much-needed sweep at the most opportune of times and rode this wave of good fortune all the way back to the top of the pops – 1st in the NL East and now an entire one-half game ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Good luck catching us, Tom Franzone, you’re going to need it… or not, probably not. Our players of the week in Strangeverse were two, not-so-well-known youngsters… in the AL it was 25-year old CFer, Vance Dudgeon, out of Atlanta – he hit .560 with 4 RBIs and 6 runs over the last 7 days – while, in the much, much better National League, one Mr. Sam Kilgour, of the Houston Texans, took home the weekly award on the back of an 11-hit, 5 HR, and 5 RBI week… it should be noted that the kid now has a grand total of 6 HRs on the year… Also, speaking of noteworthy happenings, we, your Miami Flim Flams, were ranked #1 in the weekly power rankings, are on a 5-game winning streak, and have now won 7 of our last 10 tilts… we’ve breaded the chicken with Ritz crackers and are cooking with Crisco now folks!

some power, some poor pitch selection, and a gamer...

2080 Season (8/19 – 8/21)

Miami United (74-50, .597, 1st NL East) @ Toronto Reds BC (75-49, .605, 1st AL East)
The Reds are a problem – they do everything well, or, almost everything… they don’t run the bases very well (10th), are error-prone (11th), and are not very efficient defensively (10th). Everything else, though? One’s and two’s… with three batters at 18 or more HRs, a National League leading OPS of .784, and their left fielder, Hudson Collier, has a .346/.403/.568 slash with 18 jacks and 82 RBIs. And, that’s just the tip of the iceberg – their pitching staff is legit too. 1st in Starters ERA, 3rd in Bullpen ERA, and 3rd in FIP – this club, from top to bottom, is a World Series favorite, have a 9-game lead on the Carolina Panthers, and should run roughshod over all comers when the playoffs finally arrive. I’m not a fan of interleague silliness, I don’t get to vote on it though so I deal with it – but, it’s series like this one where you find yourself lined up against the best team in the league because you’re in the midst of an even year campaign and have to play against the AL division that houses the leagues best team that really chaps my hide.

125 of 162: Win, 6-3. Rad went 7, allowed 9 hits, with 3 earned, and 4 walks (and still got the win), Magmo finished 3 for 5 with a 2-run bomb, and Collins hit a 3-run jack. We did most of our damage in the top of the 1st here, 5 runs in the frame, and added the 6th in the 8th because we felt like it.
126 of 162: Win, 3-2. Manning drove in a run and scored, and Murray gets the win in 6-innings of work where he allowed 2 runners to plate and fanned 4. OH HONG went 2 for 3 and scores, 29th jack for Anaconda (solo shot), and Pepper continued to struggle – he went 0 for 3 and K’d 3 times…

Quick break, because this is important… Eloy looking happy for a change, life in Shreveport is treating him well it seems…

127 of 162: Loss, 4-3. Anaconda went 2 for 4 with 2 solo homers… no one else does anything of note and we fail to secure the sweep in Toronto. We had a chance – but, when Ardolph Goldberg took the ball in the bottom of the 9th and promptly served up a meatball to Hamza McDonnell that was all she wrote.

Notes: We managed to navigate the treachery of the great white north with dignity and aplomb… taking 2 of 3 off the Reds BC is a nice accomplishment, a feather in our cap if you will. Though, we are still only one-half game ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers after this more than satisfactory result in Canada. We just can’t shake them it seems – they’re not matching our pace exactly but have expertly drafted in behind us and will look to pass if we lose any steam. That, of course, is what has me worried – we’re hot right now, have been for a while, and just aren’t built to operate this far in the red… this thing is held together with crazy glue and silly string. Something’s got to give… In some cool news out of the Bush League, SP Gunnar Karnatz, of the Bowling Green Lickers, pitched an 8 K, NO-NO to lead his club to a 3-0 victory of the Birmingham Billy Goats. Karnatz, a 31-year old baseball lifer with a year and 124 days of major league service to his name, has spent his last 4 season in the BL (with Nolanville, Beaumont, Naperville, and now Bowling Green) with this one being the best of the bunch. So far he’s gone 8-5 with a 2.57 ERA and has a 3.4 WAR… the BL is doing him some good, he is still playing ball, still getting paid for it, and, at least for one more season, won’t have to hang them up and face the realities of corporate life.

2080 Season (8/22 – 8/25)

Miami United (76-51, .598, 1st NL East) @ Philadelphia 76ers (61-66, .480, 4th NL East)
Philadelphia has certainly seen better days than these… most recently with Palmer Parker in the fold and before that the reign of SP Josiah Weber. But that was then, and this is now… this year's model is best by injuries, underwhelming offensively (10s & 11s everywhere you look), and nowhere near where their fans thought they’d be at this point of the season. They’ve been a low-key disappointment nationally, which, in Philly, means that local area fans want someone’s head on a pike. Currently, that head belongs to GM Dylan Edmonston, who, given that he is a Northern Irish lad hailing from Belfast, could not care any less. Listen, Dylan is no genius of general management, in fact, you could make a pretty strong case that he is barely serviceable… but, his IDGAF attitude fits Philly like a glove. Fair play to him.

127 of 162: Win, 3-2. Kordell’s 8-inning, 5-hit performance carried the day and Arnold Webster, getting a rare start, put us over the top in the top of the 6th on a run-scoring single off SP Logan Maldonado. Elsewhere… SP Dejuan Burns pitched a complete game, 7-hit shutout in a 6-0 Chicago win over the Atlanta Falcons and RF Kirk Johnson, of your Compton Raiders, went 4 for 4 with a double, a jack, and 5 RBIs in his clubs 9-1 win over the Austin Grackles in International League play… he’s batting .291 with 11 HRs and 54 RBIs for Compton so far this season.

128 of 162: Loss, 1-0. Harvey pitched a phenomenal game – a 1-run, 5-hitter… our club, however, gave him no support because we were too busy being puppet mastered by SP Bentley NoonanManookian fanned against him 3 times and Anaconda couldn’t get a hit in 4 tries…

129 of 162: Win, 10-8. Rad gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th – hopefully he’s not slowing down due to his extreme usage rate. Dom hit 2 bombs and drove in 5 runs, and OH HONG went 2 for 3 with 3 runs… Elsewhere… 1B Ned Saucerman, almost back from injury and currently rehabbing in Cuba, went 5 for 6 with two, two-baggers, a homer, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs in the Sugar Kings’ 7-6 win over the Gwinnett Stripers – he looks ready to me, though, given that I trust the advice of medical experts, I’ll let the team doctors make the call.

130 of 162: Loss, 19-6. Yikes. This one was painful… Philly hit 5 long balls against us, putting 3 of those on our starter, Murray Wagner. 5 runs scored on Murray, Montemayor, and Funky, with 4 more charged to Hunter Vaughn’s account as well…

Notes: A split is nothing to get to rattled about… usually. This one cost us our perch at the top of the table and, as a result, we find ourselves a ½ game behind the Steelers (again). We also dropped to 3rd in the weekly power rankings… so, this is all just a blip on the radar or ours is a sinking ship. Only time will tell. Heading home to welcome Brooklyn (for 3), St. Louis (for 3), and Montreal (for 2) to town as we close out August and head into the stretch run of September…
