4/3/1987 - Spring Training Final
Phillies:
Final Spring Training Record: 10-20

Injuries:
CF Milt THompson, hamstring strain, out 3 weeks.

Transactions:
Placed CF Milt Thompson on 15 day DL.
Traded 3B Greg Jelks (20,20) and CF Ron Jones (20,2) to Oakland from SS Walt Weiss (20,45) and CL Jim Corsi (25,50)
Assigned CL Jim Corsi to AA Reading
Add SS Walt Weiss to Active roster
Sent SP Danny Clay to AAA Maine
Sent RP Wally Ritchie to AAA Maine
Sent RP John McLarnan to AAA Maine
Waived 2B Greg Legg and esignated him for assigment
Sent 2B Steve Jeltz to AAA Maine

Maddux won the 5th spot with 2.04 FIP and 10.5 K/9 vs 1.7 BB/9. Toliver pitched well and locked down a middle relief spot.
Ritchie and McLarnan got lit up and sent to AAA. The last 2 spots came down to Clay, Romeza and Michael Jackson.
Clay pitched the best but he is not on the 40 Man roster and has options. So he'll start in AAA.

I've been looking for a shortstop and most teams wanted either Bruce Ruffin or Juan Samuel for a young unproven SS with potential. Surprisingly, Oakland was not only
willing to trade away Weiss, but throw Corsi into the deal as well.

With the addition of Weiss, that place Jeltz, Luis Aquayo and Greg Legg in a battle for the last spot. Aquayo way out performed the other and was kept. Legg was out of options and I
had no desire to keep just because of that. He was waived and DFA'd. If he clears waivers he may be place on the final 40 man roster. Placing Thompson on the DL, allowed Jeff Stone and Ron Roenicke to
make the team.

Notable League News:
Mariners SP Scott Bankhead, torn rotator cuff, out 5-6 months.

4/6/1987 - Preseason Predictions Updated
Baseball Network News (BNN) released updated preseason predictions on the opening day of spring training. These seem more realistic to me

Division Winner Predictions:
AL East - Yankees (95-67)
AL West - Twins(88-74)
NL East - Mets (101-61)
NL West - Dodgers(93-69)

They had the following Phillies at 73-89 and in 4th place. They also had a Phillie in the top 10 hitters:
Mike Schmidt - .303, 40 HR, 121 RBI, .569 SLG

Top Prospects:
The Phillies were the only team with no top 100 prospects and as such were dead last in the minor league system rankings.

  • Signed RP Angel Moreno to Minor League contract and assigned him to AAA Maine.
  • Signed RP Mark Littell to Minor League contract and assigned him to AAA Maine.
  • Signed 1B Dave Hostetler to Minor League contract and assigned him to AA Reading.

Notes:
On opening day there were around 40 players placed on waivers as team trimmed their 40 man rosters. The only player of note was Terry Mulholland so i place a claim on him and lost. I setup my minor systems and due to injures in the majors, i had to offer minor league contracts to some free agents to fill out the AA and AAA rosters. There were only 19 total free agents, so the pickings were slim.

Notable MLB News:
Indians CF Brett Butler, torn quad muscle, out 5-6 weeks.

Indians SP Phil Niekro, torn labrum, out for season.
Rangers LF Pete Incaviglia, torn labrum, out for season.
Brewers SP Chris Bosio, torn labrum, out for season.

  • Mike Easler - 15-30, .500, 2 HR, 2RBI - WON PLAYER OF THE WEEK!
  • Kevin Gross - 0-1, 11 IP, 6 K, 13.09 ERA
Cold Players:
  • Shane Rawley - 15 IP, 13K, .60 ERA;
Injuries:
  • None

Transactions:
  • Activated LF Greg Gross from the 15 Day DL.
  • Optioned SS Walt Weiss to AA Reading.
  • Promoted 1B Dave Hostetler to AAA Maine.
  • Demoted C Steve Williams to A Clearwater
  • Traded C John Russel to A's for RP Stan Kyles, RP Reese Lambert and 2B Dan Rohn
  • Assigned RP Stan Kylesto AAA Maine.
  • Assigned RP Reese Lambert to A Clearwater
  • Assigned 2B Dan Rohn to AAA Maine
  • Release RP Angel Moreno.

Notes:
Weiss was batting .053 and needed more seasoning in the minors. He was sent to AA. In a corresponding move, I moved recent FA signing Hostetler to AAA Maine who needed infielders. Williams was demoted only because 1 of the 2 catchers at Clearwater is out for the year. I needed a 3B and some upper level relievers so I shopped Russell and Oakland showed interest. After some back and forth we settled on this deal. Angel Moreno was a FA signing for depth and was no longer needed. The ERA over 9 didn't help his cause.

Division Leaders:
AL East: Boston 19-7
AL West: Kansas City 13-9

NL West: San Diego 14-12

Notable MLB News:
Pirates SP Doug Drabek, torn rotator cuff, out for season.
Pirates SP Rick Reuschel, ruptured achillies tendon, out for 4 months
Padres trades 2B Tim Flannery and 182K to the Twins for SS Greg Gagne
Tigers LF Darnell Coles, torn meniscus, out 4-5 months

Quick Commissioner Note:

For some reason OOTP already has all of the players from the 1987 draft on their teams. Therefore, I push the draft to June of 1988. No draft this year, will make it even harder for me.

This team is starting to go nowhere fast. They have not played above .500 since the first week. I was going to wait until at least June to trade players, but with the Mets losing 2 SPs this week, I am going to offer them Rawley and see if they have interest. Unfortunately, he has pitched poorly this year but maybe a change of scenery will help him. Easler, Bedrosian, Tekulve and Schatzeder will be on the block soon enough.

  • Recalled CF Ron Roenicke from AAA Maine.
  • Released 1B Dave Hostetler from AAA Maine

Notes:
I shopped SP Shane Rawley to the Mets, but the best offer from them was for 2 low level relief pitching prospects; and they wanted me to throw in Glenn Wilson. I felt like I could get a better deal. It did make wonder what Wilson's value would be as he is a free agent. I shopped him around and the White Sox offered Giles. I asked them to throw in Groom and they agreed. With having 9 IFs at AAA, it was an easy call to release Hostetler, who was hitting .065 in 15 ABs.

  • Added RP Steve Ontiveros to the 40-man roster
  • Added 3B Mike Gallego to the 40-man roster
  • Added SP Craig McMurtry to active roster
  • Added LF Carmelo Martinez to active roster

Notes:
I signed some minor league free agents to fill in some depth at all levels of the minors. I placed a waiver claim on McMurtry who is nothing special but at 27 is younger then Tom Hume who i would like to deal. He is out of options so he will have the rest of the season in my bullpen as an audition.

I was able to execute some trades. First I shopped {B]Rawley{/B} around and received some offers. The one I liked the best was Oakland's offer of Harper. Even though I have Daulton, Harper intrigued me with his potential. He makes good contact and does't strikeout alot. He's average defensively but can catch, play corner infield and the outfield. After some haggling, I also received, Ontiveros, who is a league average player; Nelson, who has power and a good eye, but is better suited a DH; Gallego, who is a good defensive utility infielder with limited upside offensively; and Fingers, who is a pure lotto with below average stuff. They asked Ventress, who is a speedster that can play defensive but not a good hitter.

Then I traded Aquayo and Brundage, who is patient and could develop into a good contact hitter to San Diego. In return, I received Martinez who is a goof LF with potential at the plate; Bones, who has 3 pitches and decent movement, control and stuff; LF Abner, who projects as a bench player with some gap power; 1B Stevenson, who has a good and power, but struggles ot make contact and in the field; and RP Bitker, who has an average FB is average across the board.

The players with a major league contract needed to be added to the 40 man roster, which I did. Martinez, who is out of options, was added to the active roster to replace Aquayo and[ B]McMurtry[/B] replaced Rawley. I assigned the others to the minors and reassigned of the minor league FAs I aqcuired earlier in the season.

A couple of days later, I made two more trades. I shopped Roenicke, not expecting any offers, but Houston offered Gerhart, an OF with power who can steal a base but is a liability in the field. I asked them to throw in a lotto ticket in Bond and then did. B]Bond[/B] has plus movement but needs to work on his control. They both will be assigned to the minors

Then, I shop Tekulve around and the Mets offered Orsoco. This was interesting because at 30, he was older than what I was looking for. He had a similar contract and ratings then Tekulve but I felt that I ould flip him later in the season or in the offseason for better prospects. I was able to convence the Mets to pay 28K towards his salary and throw in some prospects. Bautista, has a goog FB and forkball and excellent control but needs to improve his movement and Castillo is a 17 year old with a good eye.

Overall the prospect hual I received is not great but I was trading vetern rentals.
