Don't Make This Mistake
It's near the end of July, 2020. I've brought my team into contention and have a tenuous 3 game lead in the division. Even so, I am conscious of my budget restrictions and decide to make a couple of moves at the deadline. Our backup catcher is coming up for arbitration and wants along the lines of $3 million. I have a young, very good defensive catcher at AAA, so I trade my backup for a prospect and call up my young guy. On the 3rd of September my starting catcher gets a 6 week injury. We now have a 5 game lead and the playoffs seem like a good bet.
Here's the mistake: I didn't put another catcher on my 40 man roster. I can call another young guy up, but he is not playoff eligible. If the young guy I originally called up gets injured, I am screwed. Also, for the playoffs, assuming I can hang on, I will not have a back up catcher. The best I can do is one of my platoon OF who has a 30 catcher rating with a 40 arm. |

I guess this why coaches/manager get paid the big bucks.

If your catcher is on the disabled list when you hit the playoffs then you will be allowed to add a player to the "playoff eligible" roster. At that time you can add another catcher from AAA.

Having a platoon OF who can actually step in as the third (second in this case and hopefully not first) C is pretty sweet actually. Good luck!

I hope this is true! I play out my games, so a couple more real time weeks before I test this theory out.

Pretty sure that the way it works for a standard, modern MLB save is that for every playoff eligible player on the DL at the start of the playoffs, you can add a non eligible player to the playoff eligible list.

There was one time I wrecked a save by allowing the AI manager to use my starters in the bullpen mid-season - *boy* did he take advantage of that. Cue me having nearly all my starters unfit to pitch and not able to save the rotation

Well we made the playoffs on the last day of the season by winning our last game to clinch the division. Unfortunately I was unable to add a second catcher because my number one guy was not on the 60 day and my third guy wasn’t on the 40 man. The good news is that the number one guy will be done his injury after the first game of the playoffs so I took him off the dl and put him on the playoff roster.

Yes, you should always have 3 catchers on the 50 man. It's the hardest position to cover.
6 week injury with no rehab? Let us know how he does |

Just add that other catcher to the 40 man.
