Antonio Bastardo (2014 Topps): While being used throughout his career primarily as a reliver, Antonio actually
made his MLB debut on June 2, 2009 as a starter and he went six innings to earn a 10-5 win over the Padres.
Raul Ibanez, who would finish his MLB career with over 2,000 hits and over 300 home runs, provided Bastardo
with most of the necessary run support to make Antonio's maiden voyage in the major leagues a successful one,
by getting three hits, which included him slugging two home runs and driving in five runs for the Phillies.

I'm sure Bob Uecker has just made a self-deprecating joke when this photo was taken. It looks like in the last year of his six years MLB playing career (1962-1967), Uke already had his dead-pan humor stare down pat and was preparing for a post-playing career in stand-up comedy (which led to his movie roles and his broadcasting job with the Brewers, where he eventually won the Ford Frick award, earning him a spot in the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall Of Fame.) Uecker struggled valiantly with the Phillies and Braves in his final MLB season (1967) to keep his lifetime batting average from dipping below .200 and he barely succeeded, finishing with a lifetime batting average of .1997, which rounds up to .200 - and that struggle was grist for his comedic mill. Despite telling knee-slapping, eyes-watering stories about his playing days that had his audiences in stitches, Uecker remained stoic and never cracked a smile while telling hilariously funny tales about his baseball exploits As one writer put it "All you need to know about whether Bob Uecker was funny or not, is that he could make (renowned sourpuss) Eddie Murray laugh out loud.".
Without a trace of a giveaway smile, Uecker still keeps them laughing today at age 84.

4/30/2019: C.C. Sabathia became the 17th pitcher in MLB history to reach the 3,000 Strikeouts milestone, but lost 3 to 1 to the Arizona Diamonbacks and their ace, Zach Greinke, who got his National
League-leading fifth victory.

April 30: Carsten Charles Sabathia (C.C. Sabathia) became the newest member of the 3,000 Strikeouts Club. He is the first pitcher in more than a decade to reach the 3,000 Strikeouts for a career level. He is the 17th pitcher in MLB history to strikeout 3,000 batters. Arizona Diamondbacks catcher, John Ryan Murphy was his 3,000th Strikeout victim. Sabathia, who had 5 strikeouts on the night, finished the game with 3,002 career strikeouts. C.C. sustained his first loss of the season (1-1). Diamondbacks ace, Zack Greinke went 7.2 innings to earn his National League-leading 5th victory (5-1). Sabathia is only pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts in this decade. The last previous pitchers to reach the coveted 3,000 strikeouts milestone were John Smoltz (2008) and Pedro Martinez (2007).
Sabathia is in his 19th major leagues season (2001-2019) and his 11th year with the New York Yankees (2009-2019).

3,000 plus Career Strikeouts pitcher, C.C. Sabathia also starred for 7 1/2 seasons with the Cleveland Indians (2001-2008) and he had a supurb memorable 2 plus months with the Milwaukee Brewers late in the 2008 season, which propelled the Brewers to the N.L. playoffs.

C.C. Sabathia won 17 games in 2001 to earn the American League Rookie Of The Year Award.
He now is the Wins Leader among all active pitchers with 247 Wins. His .616 winning percentage
(247-154), is also among the highest of any active pitcher.

Today, May 6, is Willie Mays' 88th birthday. He has also just moved into the bottom spot of Wikipedia's Supplementary oldest living players list at #125. The Main page of the Wikipedia Oldest players List gives the 100 oldest living major league players, but if you click EDIT - Top of the Main page on the right it will give you a second list that I call the Supplementary List that names the 125 oldest living players (25 new players: including #s 101-125.)

The great, Willie Mays turned 88 earlier this week. (Monday, May 6, 2019).

A tremendous loss to the baseball community and the world, Ray Peters passed away on May 4, 2019 at the age of 72.

Although his major league career was brief, Ray was a friend to many. He and I had swapped emails going back to 2014 when he came across a custom card I'd done of him. We talked about many things. And I was far from the only one. Ray was a real mensch, one of the best people I've ever come into contact with, even if I never met him in person. He made it his life's work to ensure that his teammates would never be forgotten. And, as explained in this piece, he was thrilled to finally get a Topps card of himself with the Brewers--the team he reached the majors with--earlier this year. It took 50 years, but he finally got it. God speed, Ray. I'll miss you.

Barry Latman pitched for AA Memphis of the Southern Association (Chicago White Sox affiliate) in 1956, which included at least one visit to Rickwood Field to play our Birmingham Barons. His 10-year major league career went from the White Sox to Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros Latman died on April 28th at the age of 82, so we're honoring his memory.

Curt Simmons the #2 lefty who combined with Hall Of Famer, Robin Roberts, for many years to give the Phillies a 1-2 punch at the top of their pitching rotation (#1 RHP - Robin Roberts; #2 LHP- Simmons) turns 90 years of age today. Simmons' major league tenure was 1947-1967, except 1951 - Military Service - He was a three-time N.L. all-star and a 193 game winner, who could have reached 200 wins if not for his Army reserve unit being activated during The Korean War, with Simmons missing time from the majors between September 1950 and May 1952. After his long stint with the Phillies (1947-1960) he went on to have productive years with the St.Louis Cardinals (1960-1966, winning 18 games in 1964); Chicago Cubs (1966-1967), and the California Angels 1967.

On May 19 Wally Westlake (1956 Phillies) became the oldest player in Phillies franchise history at age 98 years and 192 days. He surpasses Alex Monchak (98 years, 191 days: who played 19 games for the 1940 Phillies, which was his only major league experience.
Westlake came to the Phillies at the end of a 10-year MLB career (1947-1956). He only appeared in 5 games for the Phillies as a pinch-hitter. He had been an everyday outfielder to six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, making the 1951 National League all-star team. Monchak had three seasons with at least 20 home runs and three years with at least 80 RBI. His career highs came in 1949 with Pittsburgh, with 24 home runs and 104 RBI. After 1 1/2 years with the Cardinals (1951-1952), Westlake had three good years as a very valuable reserve with some very good Cleveland teams in 1953 to 1955. He hit .330 for The Tribe in 1953 and hit 11 home runs, coming off the bench for the wins and winning percentage record- setting 1954 Cleveland team (111-43, .721 win. pctg.).

Previous Phillies record holder as the oldest Phillie in franchise history, Al Monchak, a shortstop, is pictured with the 1940 Phillies. He lived 98 years, 191 days, and was the oldest player in Phillies franchise history, until surpassed by Wally Westlake, of the 1956 Phillies.

Lee Howard has passed away at age 94, but his April 24, 2018 death was not reported to Wikipedia until just now, 13 months later. Howard was 0-1, with a 2.25 earned run average in 5 major league games that took place during September call-ups in 1946 & 1947. His only big leagues decision occurred on September 29, 1946 in the first game of a doubleheader, when Howard pitched a Complete Game ,but took a tough 1-0 loss. He was outdueled by Cincinnati's Johnny Vander Meer who threw a Shut Out, while the Reds were able to coax a run across the plate in the seventh inning on a Bob Usher RBI single, for the game's only tally.
