For the benefit of MarkInCincy, I thought I would post Mr. Bench's accomplishments so far. This could be a lengthy post, so bear with me. He played a partial season in 1925 as an 18 year old and has played 11 full seasons since then through his age 29 season in 1936. He played his first ten seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics and the last two with the St. Louis Browns, so he's spent his entire career in the AL. He is an 11-time All-Star, only missing in that abbreviated rookie season of 1925. He has one ring from the 1930 season with the Philadelphia Athletics. He has won the Ted Williams (Silver Slugger) Award 9 times at C, and the Ozzie Smith (Gold Glove) Award 7 times at C. He has been the Player of the Week 15 times, and the Batter of the Month 5 times.
His MVP finishes are as follows: 1925: N/A (Mike Schmidt won) 1926: 5th (behind Schmidt, Rocky Colavito, Ed Konetchy, and Charlie Hanford) 1927: 2nd (behind Schmidt) 1928: 6th (behind Schmidt, Mike Shannon, Al S Shaw, Mat Latos, and Colavito) 1929: 3rd (finally beat out Schmidt, but couldn't get past Mickey Mantle and Jake Peavy) 1930: 2nd (narrowly beat out by Paul Splittorff) 1931: 7th (behind Mantle, Schmidt, Duffy Lewis, Colavito, Miguel Cabrera, and Jerry Koosman) 1932: 2nd (behind Mantle) 1933: 13th (behind twelve dudes: Mantle won it by a mile) 1934: 3rd (behind Mantle and Addie Joss) 1935: 12th (behind eleven dudes: Mantle wins again) 1936: 19th (behind eighteen dudes: Jose Canseco snaps Mantle's streak at 5, as the Mick finishes 9th while playing in only 103 games due to a herniated disc) What a career, and he's still just going into his age 30 season. 5 top 3 finishes, 6 top 5 finishes, and 8 top 10 finishes in MVP voting is pretty awesome, and he might have three MVP had it not been for Schmidt, Splittorff, and Mantle. Even if his career ended today (fingers crossed that it doesn't) he's already a HoFer in my book. Last edited by actionjackson; 03-13-2016 at 03:36 PM. |

Thought I would take a moment and update you on Dave Stieb. He has a 177-91 career W-L record. 3.27 ERA, 120 ERA+ 1813 strikeouts, 40.9 WAR. He pitched for Indianapolis from 84-89. He then signed a free agent deal with the Cleveland Spiders and would pitch for the Spiders from 90-94. 1995, at the age of 32, he signed a 1 year deal to pitch for the Philadelphia Stars. He won 118 games as a starter for the Indianapolis Arrows. He would win 51 games as a member of the Cleveland Spiders over 5 seasons, but only his first there 1990 saw him start more than 30+ games(36). In fact, he even spent the entire 93 season in the bullpen, notching only 1 start that season. He was injured on 04/24/1994 and missed 4 months, finishing the season 4-4, 12 games, 9 started. Glad to say, so far he's bounced back nicely in 1995. Mid June has him 9-4, 2.84 for Philadelphia.
Oh and Garth Iorg won a Gold Glove at 3B for the Pittsburgh Bucs in 1994. |

Just don't ever let Iorg win an MVP Award or I'll cry foul! (I know, the game picks your awards for you, but that would be a real lark! )

His offense leaves a lot to be desired, so I don't see that happening. Did get a hoot out of Joel Youngblood having an MVP season though. Out of nowhere he hit 43 bombs and well over .300 for a season. He must have lucked into someone the recalc numbers of someone else.

Holding my breath David Watts...Lou Whitaker has suffered a concussion at age 31, and is currently out with post-concussion syndrome. Please make it back Lou. He's been so good so far. 57.7 WAR and 48.8 JAWS. Tremendous defense at 2B to go with a 121 OPS+ and a 119 wRC+ in 13 seasons. Don't let this be the end.

I'm currently in August 1995 and rookie sensation Ted Williams is flirting with .400. Albert Belle has 30+ plus bombs as a rookie as well.

The Mick now has 7 AL MVP awards in the last 9 seasons. The Tigers have finished 1st in the AL in five of those 7 MVP seasons, and won two World Series titles. They have him for one more season guaranteed and a player option on 1939. Will he go out a champion? Whatever happens he's gonna make a sweet killing in free agency. He's "only" making $20,000 per year right now. He might make $50,000 in free agency. We shall see.

The damn Yankees have now won 8 WS titles. Does OOTP have to imitate life this much? The next closest is 4 by the Cubs and the Phillies. The Boston Bees, Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Browns are still looking for their first titles. C'mon guys, we're 37 years in here, let's go...

Jack Morris just got taken 1st overall by the Cubs. Jorge Orta went second and Kip Selbach went third. Bit of a dogpoop draft I guess, but I suppose I was due for one. For cryin' out loud, Vance Law went fifth overall.

Well, Dave Stieb earned his 200th victory during the 1997 season.
