Award Winners 2013

Glove Wizard Awards:
Delaware:

Pitcher: Gilberto Carrabello (Lewes Braves)
Catcher: José Rentería (Milton Brewers)
First Baseman: Ángel Romero (Georgetown Sixteens)
Second Baseman: Kevin Norris (Milford Clippers)
Third Baseman: Garrott Grant (Milford Clippers)
Shortstop: Jesús Paredes (New Castle Colonials)
Center Fielder: Andrés Salinas (Dover Generals)
Right Fielder: Dax Petersen (Milford Clippers)
** not sure what happened here, but only 2 outfielders got the awards

MarVa:
Pitcher: Robert Albert (Baltimore Barons)
Catcher: Lorenzo Nieto (Richmond Cardinals)
First Baseman: Jonathan Cook (Richmond Cardinals)
Second Baseman: Howard Johns (Chesapeake Blue Crabs)
Third Baseman: Roberto Pérez (Baltimore Barons)
Shortstop: Joe Payne (Chesapeake Blue Crabs)
Left Fielder: Pablo Freitas (Norfolk Cavaliers)
Center Fielder: Pat Shelton (Norfolk Cavaliers)

Right Fielder: Grant Wright (Washington Senators)
** I was planning on trying to move Shelton this off-season for a bat, but if I can get a bat for RF maybe I can live with him in CF if his defense is the best in the league.

Newcomer Awards 2013:
Delaware: Marvin Martin (Newark Millers)
DDIV Announces Newcomer Award: When Marvin Martin stepped onto the baseball field, he meant business. His solid play this year has netted the Newark rookie catcher the Del Division Newcomer Award for 2013.

Playing in 136 games, he hit for a .258 average with 122 hits, 16 home runs, 59 RBIs and 65 runs scored.

MarVa: Pablo Freitas (Norfolk Cavaliers)
Freitas Best Rookie This Year: Pablo Freitas made quite a name for himself in his rookie year. The Norfolk center fielder brought home the 2013 Newcomer Award today in recognition of his performance.

Freitas played in 158 games, batted .261, collected 161 hits in 616 at-bats, 31 home runs, 83 RBIs, 91 runs scored, 85 walks and compiled a .349 OBP.
* I was a little shocked he got the award. Hopefully he does hit a sophomore slump, because he is our team leader and we are expecting big things from him.

Manager of the Year:
Delaware: Pablo Lopez (Milton Brewers)
DDIV Best Manager Picked, Milton's López Winner: Pablo López stepped before the microphone today and accepted his Del Division Manager of the Year award, thanking the whole Milton Brewers organization for making the 2013 season such a success.

López struggled to find the right words, "My father was a drill instructor in the military. He taught me that you have to work hard, set goals and accept responsibility for your actions. That's what the entire Milton organization did this year. My dedicated owner, coaching staff, hard-working and talented players and loyal front office all made this award possible. I thank them for it."

And what a year it was. López sparked the Brewers to a 103-59 record and a first in the Del Division Southern Division standings.

MarVa: Pedro Ruiz (Annapolis Admirals)
Ruíz of Admirals Honored, MVDIV's Best Manager: Annapolis Admirals field manager Pedro Ruíz has brought a winning attitude to the team and the city. His no-nonsense approach, work ethic and baseball experience has paved the way for success.

This season the Admirals parlayed his managerial skills and some talented ballplayers into a first place spot in the MarVa Division Eastern Division standings. Annapolis finished the year with a 98-64 record.

To everybody's delight Ruíz was voted the 2013 MarVa Division Manager of the Year by the baseball writers.

"Mr. Ruíz doesn't take any stuff. If you aren't doing your job, he's not afraid to call you on it," noted one of his ballplayers. "But the team wouldn't want to play for anyone else. He's tough, demanding, but he treats everyone fairly and doesn't play favorites. Nobody gets pampered on his ballclub."

The Golden Arm Awards (Pitcher of the Year)
Delaware: Anthony Dundee (Milford Brewers)

King of the Hill Announced by Del Division: The Golden Arm Award for 2013 has been presented and the Del Division winner is Anthony Dundee of Milford.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Dundee. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Clippers star told reporters.

Dundee excelled with an impressive 19-9 record in 34 starts. In 267.2 innings he yielded 221 hits and 47 walks, while striking out 143 and compiling a fine 2.39 ERA.

MarVa: Lucio Bonilla (Annapolis Admirals)
MVDIV Names Bonilla Golden Arm Award Winner: Lúcio Bonilla of the Annapolis Admirals might be an old man, but he can still pitch with the best of them. Today the 36-year-old hurler snagged the MarVa Division Golden Arm Award honors for his outstanding 2013 performance.

He posted a 2.51 ERA with 19 wins, 8 losses, 145 strikeouts and 51 walks in 233.1 innings.
** I think Sweetapples 3-game losing streak at the end of the season hurt him, not to mention playing for a last place team. Here is hope that he will duplicate this years performance next year, because with a better offense it will be lights out.

Silver Slugger Award (Hitter of the Year)
Delaware: Glen Hall (Newark Millers)

Del Division Names Best Hitter: It's been a year of triumph for veteran Glen Hall of the Newark Millers as he hit his way to the 2013 Del Division Siliver Slugger Award.

The 37-year-old veteran compiled a .317 average and .385 on-base percentage by putting together 191 hits, 34 doubles, 2 triples, 47 home runs and 56 walks. He also scored 104 times and drove in 123 runs.

MarVa: Abraham Thomas (Richmond Cardinals)
Abraham Thomas Captures MVDIV Siliver Slugger Award: Abraham Thomas has been around DELMARVA Baseball League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 2013 season, he's taking home the Siliver Slugger Award in the MarVa Division.

The Richmond left fielder put up a batting average of .300 with 33 doubles, 4 triples, 49 home runs and 118 RBIs.

*** not real surprise with the hitters, they were by far the best guys out there.

As I was typing out the leader board I was surprised to see Sweetapple's name all over the place. I think playing for the last place team hurt him, but he had an amazing season that is for sure. Maybe I will rename the pitching award to the "Sweetapple Award", it sure has nice ring to it.

Arbitration Cases

We have no really big Arbitration cases coming up, after signing our 2 big pitchers to 4 year extensions. Most of these guys are role players and not asking for much more that will hurt our budget.

Here is what we are offering...

The Results:
James Gillespie WIN
Gilberto Ramos WIN
Tim Garner WIN
Justin Martin WIN
Pat Shelton LOSS $2,108,000
Allen Britt WIN

I was surprised by the Britt decision, but you have to pleased overall wining 5 of 6.

Current Budget: $61,000,000
Current Payroll: $39,240,000
Amount Avail for FA: $10,855,000 (not very much)

Other News: Signed FA Esteban Sandoval to a minor league contract. Tim Olsen (our scourt) sees him as a possible major leaguer CON: 8/8, Power: 10/11, Eye: 9/10 ... intelligence and worth ethic "High" figured can't hurt to take the chance.

Winter Meetings and Stuff

November 15th: Gilberto Ramos, who is penciled in as our first baseman, was injured playing a pick-up basketball game and is out for 4 weeks... November 28th, he suffered a set back and will be out another 3-4 weeks... I am hoping this is just a minor blip and it won't hurt his ratings, they are bad enough as it is.

Winter Meetings:
Day 1:

It took time to iron out the details, but the Norfolk Cavaliers and the Milton
Brewers agreed to a swap. Milton will get 36-year old MR Alberto Hernandez and Norfolk gets 29-year old MR Javier Castro and 23-year old SP Joe Gould.

Day 2:
Norfolk Cavaliers announce the signing of Cuban SS Tony Soto. Soto is 28, just defected from Cuba and the Cav's won the lottery for him. Did we pay too much? Probably, but I guess we will find out come the regular season. Soto signed a 5-year contract worth approx $5,400,000 per year. Our scout Tim Olson has Soto rated as a 4* prospect. Contact: 11/11, Power: 10/10, Eye: 12/12. 3B and SS rated 13, with an arm of 15 and range of 16. Olson see's him as an above average fielder.

The signing of Soto means we can look to move on of our infielders, Ralph Pierce and/or Tim Garner. I am still trying to move Brian Cline out of here to bring back a RF with good defense and a solid bat. This will be our only free agent signing for now, we might get some MR pitching down the road, but we can't afford the 1 tier and don't want/need any 2nd tier.

We did receive a few trade offers, we discussed things, but nothing was substantial. King Brock seems to a hot target of many suitors. We shopped a few guys around, nothing really popped out. We will see what day 3 brings.

I decided I want to keep Mauro Candelaria and we will be trying to learn how to play outfield this off-season. Having him as a super utility or even a starting RF will be a big boost to this club.

League Notes: 28 year old, SP, Barney Butler the top free-agent out there, still hasn't signed. He is a 5* pitcher with ratings of Stuff 17, Movement 16, Control 16 with 6 +12 pitches. He is looking for 22 million a year for 5 years.

Day 3:
Georgetown approached us today with 3 trade opportunities. They really want to dump Alex MacDonaugh on us. He is 29, makes $3,800,000 and has marginal ratings. He did hit .347 last season, but I am pretty sure that was a fluke... They have no prospects that I am interested in and I am just not impressed with him. I think we will move on.

We approached New Castle and pulled off a deal. Off to New Castle we sent Ralph Pierce who played 139 games last season in the IF hitting .244, and minor league prospect Mike Roeder, plus our first round draft pick. Coming back to us is 26-year old Ron Alder and New Castles first round pick. Alder is a 1B/RF who can flat out fly! ... and for those who didn't play attention that means when you look at the draft order for next year, we went from the #5 pick to the #1 pick overall. Have to be satisfied with that. Tim Olson has Alder rated Contact 11/14, Power 6/6 and Eye 10/11 and a 4* player.

Day 4:
Ocean City approached us with a deal, but we moved on. Not much in a deal for us. 2 scrubs for a guy who may be starting... no thanks.

I shopped Pat Shelton, Allen Britt and Brian Cline around, but not sure I want back what they were offering. I could of traded Cline for Ralph Pierce, guess New Castle would prefer Cline.

I have a bunch of guys with options, so I might be standing still for a while.

Day 5:
Not much happened on day 5. Got a couple of trade offers that I am not interested in and moved on. I did shop Jose Martinez around, but didn't want old relievers back, tried to make something happen but there just really wasn't much out there. I will see what happens the rest of the way. Might have some work to do.

I did reach out to Geoffrey Bayles a starting pitcher rated 12's across the board, low stamina tho, but he is left-handed and I have 0 left handers on the roster or near ready. Bayles was probably the best lefty on the market.

Bad News...

Well this is bad news for Norfolk but good news for the Washington Senators fans. Washing dished out $111,400,000 over 5 years to bring Barney "Dragnet" Butler into the DC Area. Last year for Ellicott City Barney was 13-11 3.03 in 35 starts. Last season he was 3-1 2.17 in 4 starts against Norfolk. This is only going to make the defending champions that much harder to bring down.

A signing and a Trade

January 4th, 2014
Signed Geoffrey Bayles to a 5-year deal worth $28,500,000. The last year is a 7 million dollar team option, I would bet he won't be around for that year. ;-) Geoffrey is 12 all around, and will be penciled in as my #5, he will battle Jesus Martinez for that spot during spring training. Our real #5 should be back in 4-5 months from surgery. But this signing gives me a LH'd pitcher on the team, something we didn't have at all last season. Last season for Ellicott City Bayles was 10-9 4.11, 31 G/GS 175.1 IP, 1.32 WHIP (works out to 5 2/3 IP/GS).

**Rookie GM Move: I signed Bayles to be my #5 and I didn't even think about looking at his stamina. I was just excited to see a LH SP that I could afford... Well his "6" stamina rating might not work out as a starter, we will just have an overpriced LH specialist out of the pen.

Off-season Trade #3
January 13th
Trade #1,
we moved 26-year old prospect, and defensive specialist, Antonio Hernandez to the Annapolis Admirals for 26-year old 5*-prospect, and speed burner, Mark "Mungo" Morris. I had my reservations about trading Hernandez, but felt like this was a deal I couldn't pass up. Hernandez hit .247-5-26 in 84 games for us last season, and I don't think he lived up to his 20 defensive ratings at 2B and SS. Bringing over Morris doesn't help my over abundance of middle infielders, but he gives a 20/20 speed man and a 3B to replace Ralph Pierce. Morris hit .241-1-11 in 27 games for Annapolis last season.

Trade #2, our final off-season trade... I think. This deal is something we may regret, but with the signing of Soto and trade for Morris Tim Garner was a man without a position. We packaged up Garner, 34-year-old MR James Gillespie and a 5th round draft pick and sent them over to the Milford Clippers. In return the Clippers gave us 25-year-old MR Ron Harris and 25-year-old MR Elmer Hawkings, both with good ratings and option years. Ron Harris 4* Stuff: 12, Movement: 13, Control: 11, Elmer Hawkings, 3* Stuff: 11, Movement: 14, Control: 11.

The trade of 34-year-old James Gillespie means our oldest player on opening day will be Javier Castro @ 29 years old. He won't be 30 till May 1st. He will be the only player, on the current roster, 30+ all season. We are young!

That is all the moves we have going into pre-season. I think we are set-up pretty good. Could still use a defensive catcher and some prospect development, but other than that I am happy where we stand.

2014 Presason has Begun

Welcome to the preseason just one month away from our first Spring Training Game! Fan Interested is up to 56, the owner is happy (probably because we are 20 million under budget). We are in a good position if our young'ns can gain from their experiences last season. Our WAR gained wasn't that great, well it wasn't even good, at -0.4, the lowest in our division, but I feel we added some key pieces. It should be interesting to see.

Overall, the Georgetown Sixteens had the biggest WAR bump at 9.7, 3.5 more points than #2! Will that translate into a better finish? They were 17 games out last season with a 86-76 record. They are after Milton! It should be a fun 162 game season.

Preseason Roster Breakdown is forthcoming...

I've been following your career with the Cavaliers. Hopefully some of your guys will swing the bats a little better next year, and you'll move up in the standings.

It's fun to see another league from my neck of the woods.

Thanks for reading along... I figured you don't hear much about this area, so I figured I would put together a league. :-) Was just going to be Delaware, but decided to expand, which was the right choice. lol.

The team is young, so hopefully they have matured some. Looking over the roster I think I sacrificed some defense for bats. Hopefully not too much. I will hopefully do a break down of the spring training roster and position battles tonight.

Free Agent Signing

Looking at our depth chart going into spring training we were missing a defensive specialist. So we reached out to Joe Payne a free-agent middle infielder and offered him a 1-year 1 million dollar contract. He jumped all over it... He is 27 years old, plays SS at a 20, 2B at 17, LF at 18, 3B at 12 and CF at 7. His range is 19. I am pretty sure he will fill our void of that missing utility man.

Paynes rating for hitting aren't the best, but he should be able to produce. Contact: 10/10, Gap: 9/9, Power: 4/4, Eye: 8/8 and Avoid K's 14/14. Last season he hit .235-4-38 in 133 games for the Chesapeake Blue Claws.

Roster break-down coming up.

Pitching Breakdown 2014

Right now we have 16 pitchers on the roster, we will need to cut that down to 10 or 11, most likely I will carry 11.

**Pitching ratings will be Stuff/Movement/Control (ratings are done on a 20 scale)

The starting staff is pretty set, outside of our #5.
1) Don Sweetapple (18-9 3.14) 14/12/18. Our #1 last season and we are looking forward to another solid year from Don. He just signed a 4 year extension so hopefully he will have something to prove.
2) Carlos Mateo (12-12 4.34) 14/13/16. He finished at .500 last season after having great 2nd half. He is still the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the DelMarVa Baseball League. Coming off an off-season where he too signed a 4 year contract.
3) Karl Armstrong (9-11 4.09) 13/13/12. He missed a month and a half with injury, but returned a better pitcher. Hopefully that momentum will carry over to this season. He is 21 years old, so he is only going to get better.
4) Tsuneo Sato (14-11 3.99) 11/13/12. Sato was a man of inconsistency last season, he pitched better in the 2nd half as well, and hopefully that is a good sign for things to come.

The battle for #5 will be between:
Jose Martinez (3-13 5.24) 10/11/13. He struggled last year getting people out. He doesn't have that "out" pitch. We are hoping he has developed his curveball a little more (12), becuase he needs something. He had 2 or 3 games last season where he showed brilliance, and he will have to do that again to make an appearance on the opening day roster. He is 27 w/ 2 options.
Geoffy Bayles (10-9 4.11 w/ Ellicot City) 12/12/12. A new member of this staff, and currently our only lefty. He is pretty much garuanteed a spot on the roster if he can throw strikes. Either as the #5 or the lefy specialist, which might actually fit him better.
Sun Ho (0-3 7.59) 9/11/10. Sun is a long-shot and probaly needs more time in the minros. He got roughed up in his 6 big-league starts, but another year means growth. With 2 options left, he will most likely be our ace AAA Yokohama. But stranger things have happened. Sun is rated as the Cav's 4th best prospect in the organization, and the top pitching prospect.
Scott Smith (2-2 4.50) 7/12/15. He missed most of last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and is expected be out 3 more months. He is listed because he was our #5 last season and if he comes back healthy he may have a shot to work his way back into that spot this season. With options available he may end up throwing a lot of AAA innings.

In the Bullpen we will have 5 or 6 slots available, depending no how Bayles does.

There are 3 guys that going into camp seem to be sure things.
Carlos Rodriquez (1-1 2.13 7/9 SV/Op) 20/14/11. He finished the year as the closer and was pretty good. We would like to see him show better control, 22 walks in 38 innings, so the closer role isn't guaranteed as the next two guys will be knocking on the door.
Javier Castro (4-1 2.68 4/5 SV w/ Milton) 12/9/17 He has pretty big shoes to fill, since he was traded for all-star Alberto Hernandez. If he pitches like he did with Milton last season he may see himself as the closer of this team. Right now he will be a set-up man, but with his control, 14 walks in 74 IP) he might see himself in that role sooner than he things.
Dalton Whitaker (5-2 4.78 1/6 SV) 20/9/11. Very similiar to Carlos Rodriquez but with a weaker curveball. He showed very good control, last season, but got hit fairly hard (19 BB in 64 IP). Whitaker won some fans last year with his never give up attitude and his great worth ethic. His role most likely will be set-up man, as it was last season.

Most likely filling out the bullpen.
Ron Harris (3-4 3.82 1/5 SV w/ Milford) 12/13/11 Another one of these middle/top tier guys that relies on control to be successful. Last season Ron walked 30 in 70.2 innings. A little high for my liking, so hopefully a change in scenery will do him good.
Elliot Bean (1-5 5.50 0/3) 10/12/10. The scarey thing about Elliot is his control. Walking 12 guys in 18 innings. If he can get that under control we might see him making a splash with this team. Elliot Bean and Jorge Castro, oddly enough, each played with 3 teams last season, both being traded 2 times in the same trade. Don't see that every day. Elliot was brought over because he was a prospect, at 25 he is getting close to the put-up-or-shut-up line.

Best of the Rest.
Richard O'Quinn (0-0 2.45 / 2-7 5.12 3 SV @ AAA) 10/9/12 Has potential to make this team. Will get a nice look during spring training.
Andrew Donnelly (0-1 5.24) 12/7/11 Donnelly spent the full 2013 season with the Cavaliers, but will be fighting for a roster spot this season. Just an average pitcher. If he doesn't make the club he might be asked to work on being a starter, has stamina to pitch for days.
Jorge Castro (0-0 5.40) 12/11/10 Played at 3 levels, with 3 organizations last season. Has a questionable head on his shoulders. I would like to see him focus more, but that might be a little too much to ask. If he isn't on the roster on opening day, he will, most likely, make an appearance at some time during the season.
Lewis Yoder (0-0 3.00 / 2-2 6.14) 11/7/11 Pitched in one game with the big team and threw ok. He is an intelligent kid who works hard, but that doesn't always mean he will be a star. He will make a good innings eater and might see some time on the big league club this season.

**Note: As I was going through this list I felt like I have a bunch of middle-of-the-road type guys. I checked the free-agent wire and ended up putting a couple of offers out there.

First, to a 29 year-old MR Billy Lee. He wanted a 5 year deal, we offered a 2, he came back asking for a 3-year, we said ok. Now we wait. The one thing that caught my eye with Billy was that in 27 games (30 IP) for Newark last season he walked no one. His ratings, 11/8/20, show that his ball can be a little flat at times, but with 4 pitches he may be able to keep opponents guessing. Plus I like to see someone with great control. His offer is for 3-years $1,710,000 per year. And yes I low-balled him, probably should of gone lower.

Secondly, was a one year offer of 5 million to David Chambers. Davis is 29 and is a 5* player by Tim Olson's ratings. Last season for Newark Chambers was 5-10 4.30 23/26 SV. Chambers would rather be a starter, but with only 2 quality pitches and one medicore pitcher, he is more suited for a closer/set-up man. His ratings are solid 14/12/18, with a 15 Stam. If he signs I will give him a few pre-season starts... after I made this offer I thought about withdrawing my deal with Billy Lee, but decided not to.

Lineup Breakdown 2014

The line-up is pretty much set, at least it seems to be. The roster size is 25, so we may need to demote 1 guy if we go with 11 pitchers. There will be a little battle in the pre-season and I am going to try to get Maruo Candelaria some time in the OF. Having him out there would help out the offense, but hurt the defense.

* Hitting Ratings out of 20 Contact/Gap/HR/Eye/Avoid K's

Catchers:
Jacob Chaney (.259-12-45) 9/9/9/9/11. Played 137 games last season and did an adequate job. Doesn't have the fielding rating I'd like back there, but the league seems weak overall. Chaney had a lot of suitors this off-season, but the LH hitting catcher will be our opening day starter.
Julio Romero (.231-9-33) 9/9/12/14/10. Julio is your prototypical "dumb" catcher, he just isn't very smart. He actually was the starting catcher for the beginning of last season, till Jacob proved he deserved the job. He is only a 9 defensively, but he does what is needed from a #2 Catcher.
Bob Barrett (.274-5-47 AA New Orleans) 7/4/7/7/6. Only listed because he is our #3. If one of the J's goes down Bob will be up. He is a 19 defender, so he will boost that part of the game. Hitting isn't his strong point and his is often classified as smart, but lazy.

Infielders (putting them all together, because they all play all over the place):
1B Gilberto Ramos (.277-11-45) 10/10/8/10/8. After an early season demotion Gilberto came back hitting the ball all over the place. Can play 1B, 2B and the corner outfield slots. Currently we are trying to convince new MGR Alastair Turcotte that he should be the starting 1B. He is a gold glove caliber 1st bagger.
2B Chris Shopland (.274-1-11) 11/7/7/8/8. A top prospect in the organization he will see full-time action with the big club this season. The Manager wasnts to see Chris play 1B (only rated a 6) and we believe he is better suited just to play all-over. Rated as a 18 2B and with the ability to play all the other spots on the field, he would be a good guy to spell players from time to time.
2B Jesus Riveria (.236-4-34) 10/11/10/11/8. A top speedster on the team and a solid 2B (16) should see more time this season than last. My guess is he will be splitting time with Shopland and others. He is one of the hardest workers on the team and should make an impact. He is current a 4* prospect with 5* potential.
3B Mark "Mungo" Morris (.241-1-11 w/ Annapolis) A super fast guy with a great glove. Will be the opening day 3B unless something drastic happens. Rated a 17 at 3B, 13 at SS and 15 at 2B should be an every day player. He will be a welcome addition to the team.
SS Tony Soto (no stats, free agent from Cuba) 11/12/10/12/17. Should put up some decent batting statistics, but might struggle with the glove. Rated 12 @ 3B and 13 @ SS. I hope his the of his bat outweights the average of his glove. Will probably start at SS, but will probably see some time at 3B.
3B Mauro Candelaria (.287-12-66) 14/12/6/11/20. Mauro is going to play some OF during spring training and might be our opening day RF. He will be playing somewhere no matter what. If he isn't playing outfield expecting Mario to be at 3B and Morris moving over to 2B. He puts in long hours and is a dedicated player, so maybe the RF experiment will work out.
UTL Joe Payne (.235-4-38) 10/9/4/8/14. Joe will be on the team and will be used as fill-in defensive replacement. With a rating of 20 at SS, 18 @ 2B and 12 @ 3B and will even play 18 in LF. I signed him with one intent and he will fill that roll wonderfully.

Outfield:
LF/CF Pablo Freitas (.261-31-83) 12/9/16/12/7. A gold glove outfielders, should be stuck in LF, but depending on how things pan out might see some time in CF. Super fast, the only 30/30 man in the league last season, should see his stats improve this season. Pablo is the team leader and is well-respected, showing why he was our #2 pick in the inaugural draft. I am looking forward to a big season from Pablo.
CF Pat Shelton (.255-14-57) 8/8/8/12/9. Our other gold glove outfielder, should see some playing time, but its doubtful he will come out of the gates as a starter as he did last season. We tried to move Pat many times this off-season, but had no real takers. Will be a nice outfield replacement.
LF Brian Cline (.221-28-92) 8/10/15/12/7. Our leading RBI man from last season, Brian is one of those hit or strikeout types, striking out 150 times, while getting 131 hits in 593 AB's. He will see some time in LF and at DH, but primarily at the DH position. His 11 in LF just isn't that good, but we love his bat.
RF Jose Rodriguez (.233-18-46) 9/9/13/11/10. Decent power, decent speed, decent glove. He is just your average ballplayer. Jose should see some time in RF and at the DH position. He had a very quiet season last year, as he played in 138 games, but we rarely heard anything from him. Its how he likes it though, quite and simple. He is one of 5 lefties on the team.
RF Ron 'Oz' Alder (.253-5-56 50/69 SB for Chesapeake and New Castle) Oz is our new leadoff man. He should just play DH, since he sometimes looks lost in the OF, but his 20/20 speed/stealing ability means he will play. We brought him over in a trade to lead off and score runs. He is a leader in the club-house and well respect by his teammates and puts in long hours. He is ready to play everyday and will do what is asked of him. Hopefully he will put up 100 runs scored this season.

---
Projected Line Up v RH (My lineup, I don't agree with the Managers assessment)
With DH (when playing MarVa Conference)
1) Ron Alder (L) - DH
2) Pablo Freitas (R) - LF
3) Tony Soto (L) - SS
4) Mauro Candelaria (R) - RF
5) Mark Morris (R) - 3B
6) Jose Rodriquez (L) - RF
7) Jesus Rivera (R) / Chris Shopland (R) - 2B
8) Jacob Chaney (L) - C
9) Gilberto Ramos (R) - 1B

With no DH (when playing the Delaware Conference)
1) Ron Alder (L) - LF
2) Pablo Freitas (R) - CF
3) Tony Soto (L) - SS
4) Mauro Candelaria (R) - 2B
5) Mark Morris (R) - 3B
6) Jose Rodriquez (L) - RF
7) Jacob Chaney (L) - C
8) Gilberto Ramos (R) - 1B

Should be a fun season... at least I am looking forward to it... time to get some games under our belt...

Free Agent Signing

The good news is Billy Lee will be joining the Norfolk Cavaliers signing the 3-year contract offer on February 22nd... the bad news is David Chambers decided to sign with Washington. We just couldn't afford to battle with the big dollar guys.

Bill Lee will move into a battle for the pen. I for see him as an important role in the bullpen this year. Time will tell.

Spring Training 2014

With on week left in spring training the Cavaliers are leading the way in the Western Division with a 10-5 record, but the league predictors just don't see us having a good season with a predicted final record of 74-88. And to add insult to injury not one Cavaliers is predicted as a top 10 hitter or pitcher. Hopefully it won't be as long of a season as they are predicting.

A pretty quiet spring so far, Karl Armstrong missed a start with injury (shoulder subluxation) and we got Just Martin back from the 60-day DL. With one week left we start to make cuts...

Pitchers heading down:
Andrew Donnelly
Jorge Castro
Lewis Yoder
Sun Ho
Lucio Urruticodez
Pablo Hernandez
Richard O'Quinn

Leaving 13 pitchers on the big league squad.
Starters battling for 4 and 5th in the rotation.
Karl Armstrong 2 GS 0-1 5 IP 7.20 ERA 7 H 5 BB 5 K
Geoffrey Bayles 2 GS 2-0 8 IP 4.50 ERA 10 H 1 BB 7 K
Jose Martinez 2 GS 2-0 8 IP 3.38 ERA 7 H 5 BB 1 K

Elliot Bean and Billy Lee aren't perfoming as they should be and could see some time down in AAA.

I would hate to send Karl down, but I think he might need some more time. They will each have one more start.

I need to send down at least 2 guys from the position players, and right now its looking like Julio Romero and Justin Martin, I might trade to move Martin if there is any market for him before the season begins. I really didn't think Bob Barret would give Julio Romero a run for his money, but with better defense and hitting .421 this spring, makes Julio Romero's .146 look paltry (not to mention Romero got suspended 4 games for arguing ball and strikes). The final spot will be a tough one Brian Cline is only hitting .261, Pat Shelton is hitting .219, but with 3 HR's, and Jose Rodriquez is hitting .200.

Should make for some intriguing decisions in a few days... as of right now I will be keeping all 17 for the final week.

Mauro Candelaria is now rated a 2 in RF, and will probably continue to play RF as the season starts.

End of Spring/Pre-season Predictions upcoming...

Preseason Predictions

Spring Training is Over, the real games are about to begin... The Norfolk Cavaliers and the Milton Brewers lead the spring with 16 wins. The Brewers are expected to contend for a title this season, and the Cavaliers are predicted to finish at under .500... I am hoping our strong spring is a sign of things to come...

Spring Leaders:
Kenny Lee (Milton Brewers) .469 AVG
Alberto Trujilo (Annapolis Admirals) 7 HR
2 tied with 18 RBI
3 (All Norfolk Cavaliers) tied with 19 Runs

Many players with 3 wins
3 players with 0.00 ERA
Javier Rodriquez (Lewes Braves) 37 K's
Wilson Acosta (Milton Brewers) 9 SV

... The Predictions ...
The Delaware Conference

The Milton Brewers are looking for a repeat, and New Castle Colonials finished last, last season, but this young team are poised to make some noise.

Look for a HUGE season from their Peter Peters. He may be the best player in the game, even at the age of 21. Keith White won 16 games last season, and they are looking at him to win 18 this year. Still no 20 game winner?!?

In the MarVa Conference

Annapolis Admirals and the Washington Senators are looking to repeat with the Senators are predicted to win a whopping 103 games. Might be a boring season over in MarVa conference.

Alberto Trujillo had a fantastic 2013, but they predictors are going crazy in 2014, assuming he can stay healthy (rated Fragile). No real strong pitching performances predicted out of the MarVa conference, be it the DH or just lack of quality players.

Cavaliers spring recap and opening day roster summary coming next...

2014 Norfolk Preview

After what I deemed a disappointing 2013, we are back for 2014 with a lot of hopes and a young and, hopefully, strong, team. The offensive leaders this season will be Pablo Freitas, Ron Alder and Maruo Candelaria, which oddly enough will most likely be the most used outfield combination. The pitching staff will be lead by Don Sweetapple with a strong #2 and #3 in Carlos Mateo and Tsuneo Sato, respectively.

Spring News:
03/31/2014: Jacob Chaney, our starting backstop is out 3 weeks with hamstring tendinitis. He will end up missing the first 2 weeks of the regular season. Which means Julio Romero, on the brink of being sent to AAA to start the season, will be our opening day catcher.

03/31/2014: Mauro Candelaria, our new RF and IF backup, will be out 4 weeks after straining a hip muscle running the bases. He will miss the first 3 weeks of the regular season. A BIG loss for the Cavaliers.

04/05/2014: Final Roster Moves:
SP Jose Martinez sent to AAA Yokohama to start the season. Jose started 4 games this spring, going 2-1 with a 7.31 ERA.
MR Elliot Bean was optioned to AAA Yokohama to start the season. Elliot had an awful spring, giving up 28 hits and 16 runs in 18.2 innings, walking 11 and striking out 12.
** These two pitching moves set the pitching staff to 11 players.
04/07/2014: Norfolk Cavaliers traded 30-year-old Justin Martin (SS) and a 7th round draft pick to the Richmond Cardinals for 25-year-old Ken Coffman (CL). Ken Coffman currently the #2 prospect on the top 100 list.
Justin Martin hit .265 in 41 games for the Cav's last season. Contact: 10/10, Gap: 10/10, HR: 5/5, Eye: 9/9, Avoid K's: 11/11
Ken Coffman hasn't pitched above AAA yet and will start the season in Yokohama. Stuff: 11/15, Movement: 13/14, Control: 7/11, 2.5/4.5*

Opening Day Rostser (spring stats):
C: Julio Romero .194-1-9
C: Bob Barrett (S) .200-0-2

1B: Gilberto Ramos .259-2-8
2B: Chris Shopland .328 1-12
2B: Jesus Rivera .353-2-17
3B: Mark Morris .278-0-7
SS: Joe Payne .393-1-13
SS: Tony Soto .273-1-8

LF: Brian Cline .286-2-7
CF: Pablo Freitas .340-3-14
CF: Pat Shelton .245-4-8
RF: Ron Alder .386-2-11
RF: Allen Britt .400-1-9
RF: Jose Rodriquez .271-1-5

SP: Don Sweetapple 2-0 3.94
SP: Carlos Mateo 0-0 5.06
SP: Tsuneo Sato 2-0 3.38
SP: Karl Armstrong 0-2 7.62
SP: Geoffrey Bayles (L) 3-0 2.81

MR: Elmer Hawkins (L) 0-1 2.91
MR: Billy Lee 1-1 10.03
MR: Ron Harris 0-0 1.46

SU: Dalton Whitaker 2-1 2.77
SU: Javier Castro 3-0 3.97

CL: Carlos Rodriquez 1-1 1.93 5 SV

--
Don Sweetapple will once again be the Cavaliers opening day starter. The lineup will look like this:
DH: Ron Alder (L)
CF: Pablo Freitas
SS: Tony Soto (L)
3B: Mark Morris
RF: Jose Rodriquez (L)
2B: Jesus Rivera
1B: Chris Shopland
*C: Julio Romero
LF: Joe Payne (L)

* Bob Barrett (S) will be the opening day starter and will be catching the first 4 games of the regular season, as Julio Romero finishes up his 6 game suspension. Not sure what I am going to do as back-up catcher for those 4 games. Barrett goes from a "just because" invitee to spring training to opening day starter.

Things to watch for in 2014...
Pitching:
Will Karl Armstrong stay healthy? Does he need more AAA seasoning?
Can Geoffrey Bayles last long enough into games?
Will the big 3 (Sweetapple, Mateo, Sato match last seasons combined 44 wins?
Do I need to trade for another starter?
Can the middle relievers throw strikes?
Believe it or not, I think our relief staff is pretty solid. Guess the games will let us know for sure.

Offense:
Joe Payne is a surprising starter, but after hitting .393 in 56 at-bats during spring he will see himself starting in LF. But don't be fooled Brain Cline and Patrick Shelton are out to prove they deserve the starting spot. Cline is a huge power hitter, Shelton is a Wizard Glove Award winner, and he led the team with 3 HR's this spring.
Chris Shopland will be getting the green-light at 1B, but Gilberto Ramos will be getting his AB's. If Shopland falters you better believe Gilberto Ramos will be ready.
Julio Romero is getting a 2-week tryout behind the plate. Does Jacob Chaney walk back into the starting spot or does Julio make it a tough choice?
Will the offense be able to pick up the slack Mauro Candelaria's missing bat? Whose spot will he take when he is ready to come back? 3-4 players are playing for a roster spot.

Up next Week 1:
Current Week: 0-0 (0-0 - GB 1st)
Next Week: 3 vs Ocean City, 3 vs Ellicott City
Power Ranking: ua
Fan Interest: 56
Owners Mood: Good

Owners 2014 Expectation : Play .500 ball!
Payroll: $40,662,500 (16th of 16)

Top Prospects - 2014

The top 100 prospects list was released and here is a look a the top 10.

#2 is now part of our organization in Norfolk, which helped push us to being rated the top system in the league, as we hold 2 of the top 10 prospects in the game.

Pitching Ratings: Stuff | Movement |Control
Hitting Ratings: Contact | Power | Eye

The Cavaliers players on the top 10 list and where they are scheduled to begin the regular season.
1 (2) Ken Coffman (P) - 25 years old - Will be starting the season in AAA Yokohama, he is an elite bullpen prospect no question. Just needs to get his control down and he will be golden: ETA. Late 2014
OSA: 11/20 | 13/16 | 11/18
Tim Olson: 11/15 | 13/14 | 7/11

2 (7) King Brock (1B) - 19 years old, will be starting in Jacksonville our single-A team. There are mixed feelings about King, eventhough he is a highly touted prospect there are questions about his intensity. ETA: 2017/2018
OSA: 8/12 | 6/16 | 8/10
Tim Olson: 6/9 | 4/13 | 6/10

3 (12) Arturo Ramirez (P) - 18 years old, with solid projected ratings, would be rated higher if he worked harder. He has 4 pitches and is still learning how to control his low-90's stuff, and once that happens he will be happily implanted into the starting rotation. When we see him really depends on his development with is control. Will be in Jacksonville to start the season. ETA: 2018
OSA: 8/13 | 10/13 | 2/14
Tim Olson: 8/12 | 10/12 | 6/15

4 (18) Maurice Noble (OF) - 18 years old, with raw power. A 2nd round pick in last years draft Murry tore up A ball, hitting .296. Will begin the season back in Jacksonville for some more refinement. Would like to see him get better in the outfield. ETA: 2018
OSA: 6/10 | 2/12 | 7/12
Tim Olson: 3/6 | 6/15 | 7/14

5 (27) M Alexander (OF) - 21 year old who is still developing, had a solid year in A-ball last season and will be brought up to AA New Orleans to begin the season. Mark will be an elite base stealer if his bat can catch up. ETA: 2016
OSA: 8/9 | 5/7 | 5/12
Tim Olson: 6/7 | 4/6 | 6/11

6 Augusto Rodriquez (SS) - 19 years old and the shortstop of the future for the Cavaliers. He it .339 in A-ball and earned the right to start in AA New Orleans this season. ETA: 2016
OSA: 8/10 | 4/6 | 5/10
Tim Olson: 9/12 | 2/4 | 5/11

7 Sun Ho (P) - 25 years old, will be starting the season in AAA Yokohama and will be one of the first starting pitchers called up if starters are needed. Pitched in 6 games last season for the Cavaliers. Is almost at his full potential, but might make a decent #5 or long reliever. ETA: Arrived
OSA: 9/10 | 12/14 | 12/12
Tim Olson: 8/9 | 11/12 | 11/11

8 Christopher Shopland (2B) - 23 years old. A second baseman by trade, will be getting the start at 1B on opening day after a strong spring. Played in 20 games for Norfolk last season and hit .274. Looking to grow on that. Should see a lot of playing time this season and 500 at-bats. ETA: Arrived.
OSA: 9/9 | 9/9 | 9/9
Tim Olson: 11/11 | 7/7 | 8/9

9 Murray Pavie (OF) - 21 years old. Was asked for in a lot of trades last season, but wanted to hold on to him. A student of the game, he hit over .300 in A and AA last season and will be starting in AA New Orleans this season. Is a big leader defender with a big league arm and big league speed, the question is will his bat follow. ETA: 2015/2016
OSA: 8/9 | 10/13 | 7/8
Tim Olson: 9/10 | 8/12 | 5/7

10 Jorge Baez (P) - 17 years old. Signed as a free-agent out of the Dominican Republic showed that he has a big league future. He has a high ceiling and loves the game, but he can sometimes slip into poor habits, which usually effect the players around him. Will be starting the season in A-Ball as the closer, but may get a look as a starter down the road (only 8 stamina though). ETA: 2018
OSA: 7/15 | 8/10 | 3/11
Tim Olson: 7/14 | 10/12 | 8/14
