NFL to experiment with alternative to onside kick at Pro Bowl
Onside kick alternative
I find this interesting. I know the NFL would be quite happy to eliminate kick-offs, because of the high rate of injury and I don't know that I think it is a bad idea. there are occasional exciting moments, good and bad on kickoffs, but overall they are pretty bland. This alternative seems to give a roughly equivalent result to an onside kick, not sure if the success percentage will be the same and the team "kicking" gets a chance to get much better field position than in the onside kick. It does, however, eliminate the idea of a surprise onside kick.

IIRC, the AAF had a similar rule: Under certain circumstances (involving the score and time), a team could choose to start at the 25 (?) yard line with what was essentially a 4th-and-12 play...
I've been wondering if there are any stats that show if the injury rate on kickoffs has declined since the rule changes (that keep players from getting a running start, and thus reduce the chances of a successful onside kick) were implemented...). |
