House Rules on Off-Season Waivers

Hi all,

Just curious about what sort of "house rules" everyone uses regarding off-season waivers. Sometimes in-between seasons I can pick up anywhere between 20-25 players off waivers for organizational depth. Some even turn into solid prospects.

It seems the AI either has terrible scouting and undervalues certain players or makes completely unnecessary and silly waiver moves on guys on minor league contracts (i.e. minor league options still in play).

The AI also rarely contests me for these players.

What do you guys do to make it more "fair"?

Simple for me. I very rarely look at the waiver wire.

I don't allow myself to claim any players off waivers during the first week of the season. That seems to be when most of the volume occurs.

yeah you can get a ton of good relievers off waivers in the offseason and on opening day. i dont even really look at waivers very often when my team is good, but if i'm rebuilding i really do abuse the waivers and pick up a ton of good relievers. i think this is an area that needs improvement

I never claim a guy that I plan to immediately waive myself. Also I don't claim players the date where 60-day DL guys have to be added back to the 40-man and the date that free agency starts. The AI will keep a guy they're not going to re-sign on the 40-man right up until free agency, instead of guys with options making the minimum.

I also keep track of how often I've outrighted (when he clears waivers and you send him to the minors, removing him from the 40-man) a guy. If it's the second time I've outrighted a guy and he's unhappy in Triple-A, I grant him his release.

There's also a glitch where players end up on the 40-man while still on a minor league contract. I make sure I add these players to my 40-man roster if I claim them on waivers, even though you can send them to the minors since they don't have a major league contract.
