Every few years I make corrections between the Civ world growth and the OOTP market data to match the world as it develops. The Stags are unfortunately the poorest city (in terms of gold revenue) in the league. They had to take a couple shortcuts to get their stadium finished, but as they develop more revenue-generating building improvements, and possibly trade routes, their resources will grow.

Small market woes

Songhai is having problems with the Byzantines and wants us to join in their fight on an Eastern front. I would just as soon see them evicted from my southern continent, but I'm not going to expend too much effort doing it. Our military is so much stronger that I don't see this being too much of an inconvenience. The Byzantines are being sassy anyway.

WAR! (Kind of, more of a 'police action'.)

The Japanese are asking for us to give them some ivory, and not offering anything in trade. Normally this is a no-no. But the league has many young Japanese players in it, and the Washington Elephants capitalized on this opportunity to gain goodwill with the fans and potential free agents, and has provided the ivory from their own supply.

The Greek settlers who looked like they might establish a city on our peninsula have thought better of their actions and continued on to the east. We'll keep an eye on where they end up. I don't want them to have a foothold in my hemisphere.

A trade fleet from the saturated New York market has relocated to Portland to expand our eastern trade routes.

The city of Philadelphia has convened a congress to determine the best way to expand the league. Having completed their stadium some years ago and still waiting for an expansion partner, they have taken a keen interest in continuing league expansion. They have elected an Ambassador, and with the league's blessing will being proselytizing Baseball in the Mongolian cities where American culture has become extremely influential. This may lead to the first foreign Baseball franchises.

There are no 'game-changing' free agents at face value this season. Probably the most solid guy available is C Jon DeBlasio of Seattle. He is quickly signed by the Washington Elephants during the winter meetings and inserted in the cleanup spot in their projected starting-day lineup.

SP Jarrett Baston is inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his prime for the New York Admirals he won four consecutive Best Pitcher Awards, but has been less effective after age 30 and switched to the bullpen for the Almaty Diamond Kings, winning a Best Reliever Award at age 36.

Masters Division: At the half-way point the Boston Gold had a 2½ game lead over the Buffalo Argent. As the season ended the Argent moved into first place, gaining home field advantage. SP Nate Davis led the Argent to an easy series win over the Gold.

Legends Division: On draft day the Seattle Anglers led the San Francisco Zoo by 1½ games, followed closely by the Almaty and Washington. On the last day of the season St. Louis had pushed into first place, with Almaty and San Francisco tied for 2nd. Both teams won their final game and they ended tied. The sudden-death matchup was decided in the bottom of the 11th inning when 3B Ryan Blanchard hit a walk-off single to give the Zoo the win and a berth in the playoffs. In the division series the Zoo were no match for the St. Louis Pioneers, who advanced to the championship.

CBL Championship: The St. Louis Pioneers won the first two games of the series in Buffalo and jumped out to a 3-1 series lead, but the Argent fought back to tie the series and take it to a deciding seventh game in Buffalo. In the final game it was Buffalo ace P Nate Davis who decided matters with a shutout victory to give the Argent another championship.

Pitcher Mike Trego won his 8th Best Pitcher Award for the San Francisco Zoo, and young slugging SS Josh Irby of the Portland Stags was selected Most Valuable Player. The Chicago Miners probably regret trading 1B Carlos Medina to Atlanta, as the kid picked up a Rookie of the Year Award for the Bison. Boston LF Akiho "Squirt" Hori had a 43-game hitting streak.

The league released season attendance figures, which resulted in some heated debates around the country.

The Mongolians, who can't seem to figure out what to do with their fleet floating around in our waters, has expressed their displeasure that their citizens like us more than them. For the glory of Baseball!

Our historical society has discovered the existence of ancient hidden artifacts around the world that we can excavate to add to our archives. Our influence as the world's beacon of cultural enlightenment continues to grow.

The city of Dallas is founded in the southern sea.

The City of Portland has established a trade agreement with Kyoto. This is a major gold boost for Portland, effectively doubling their economy.

After a short bombing campaign the city of Nicaea has been captured by our cavalry, effectively eliminating the Byzantines. The entire western end of this continent is ours, the eastern end is owned by Genghis Khan. I expect we will be able to continue to exist as friendly neighbors.

Peace.

The city of Cleveland is founded southwest of Antioch.

SP Mike "Hook" Trego has been receiving treatment in the offseason for plantar fascitis, but he expects to be healthy for the beginning of the season. The 8-time Best Pitcher is definitely the top free agent available. The other major name available is two-time batting champion LF Aaron Edmon. The Washington Elephants opened up their checkbook to sign Trego, and Edmon was signed by the Buffalo Argent.

In the June draft the top prospect was SP Max Bennett. Scouts raved about both his ability and his character, and his arsenal of pitches included a cutter, slider, forkball, and a knuckle curve that one scout described "like a dancing firefly - first it flutters, then it disappears." To nobody's surprise he was chosen first overall by the Los Angeles Steel. Also significant, 16-yr old IFA hitting prodigy SS Akira "Coffin" Koyanagi of Japan was signed by the San Francisco Zoo.

Masters Division: Akiho "Squirt" Hori homered on opening day for the Boston Gold, and it set the tone for their season. At the midway point the Gold led the division, one game ahead of Buffalo and Atlanta. The Gold padded their lead and stayed strong to the finish, 6 games ahead of Buffalo. The Argent saved their best play for the division series, ousting Boston in five games. Argent SP Nate "Ping" Davis continued his trend of being virtually unstoppable in postseason play.

Legends Division: By midseason Mike Trego was at full strength, lifting the Elephants into second place behind the St. Louis Pioneers. The Elephants finished with a league-best 102 wins, and the Pioneers stayed in 2nd, 13 games ahead of the third-place finisher, Seattle. Sadly, Mike Trego tore a ligament in his elbow in September and was unavailable for the playoff run. Even without their best player the Elephants beat the pioneers to advance to the championship game.

CBL Championship: Nate Davis picked up the only victory for the Buffalo Argent, who were otherwise dominated by the Washington Elephants. The early expectations of a matchup between Nate Davis and Mike Trego never happened, but the two teams are the favorites to meet again next season. Meanwhile, Washington celebrated its third championship title.

The league awarded championship series hero CF Jon Campbell with the MVP, and despite missing the end of the season with injury, Washington SP Mike Trego easily won his 9th Best Pitcher Award. Elephants' manager Jim Roth, who was hired away from the Houston Citadel after they won their championship in 1931, was given his first Manager of the Year Award as chief of the Elephants. Veteran reliever Doug Katz of the Los Angeles Steel won his second Reliever of the Year Award, and Buffalo Argent 1B Asil bin Hashim was selected as Rookie of the Year.

The Japanese invited us to join them in combat against Venice, but there's really no reason, so we declined.

Workers have been dispatched to build a grand railroad across the main continent, connecting from Boston to Almaty.

The 1938 census has determined that the population of America now exceeds 50 million people.

Washington SP Chris "Creole" Sullivan led the league with 28 wins last season and has filed for free agency. Additional big name free agents include RF John Gomez, SS Oleg Anferov (7th all-time HR hitter), and SP Bill Harer, who is still chugging along strong at age 40. When the dust settled Sullivan signed with Portland, Gomez with Los Angeles, Anferov with Washington, and Harer signed a one-year deal with Boston.

C Orrel "Freeze" Faustov was inducted into the CBL Hall of Fame. Despite gaining most of his renown in Washington, he entered the Hall as a member of the Atlanta Bison. He won two batting titles, two home run titles, and was voted MVP in 1922.

Masters Division: In the first half of the season the Portland Stags forged to the lead as teammates SS Josh "Martini" Irby and RF Khaldun Yazid fought neck and neck for the batting title. Unfortunately the Stags collapsed badly, and the Boston Gold grabbed the title. The Atlanta Bison and Buffalo Argent ended up in a tie, and in the sudden-death game the Argent came out the winner. The Argent turned their one-game success into a ticket to the big dance by beating the Gold 4 games to 2.

Legends Division: Confounding the experts, the Miami Haberdashers - who have never made the playoffs in their 22 year history - started winning games and took over first place from the St. Louis Pioneers. It didn't last, but not because the competition was foo fierce. The Pioneers won the division with a losing record and the Washington Elephants stuck to their bumper. In the division playoff Oleg Anferov only had three hits, but two of them were home runs and the Elephants moved on to the championship.

CBL Championship: Pitchers Nate Davis and Mike Trego never faced each other directly, but Trego came out the winner as Argent beat the Elephants 4 games to 2. Between them only Trego won one game as the series was decided by other players. Buffalo 3B Dwight Reimer hit .409 and was named Championship Series MVP.

As a consolation prize, P Nate Davis broke Trego's streak and was named Best Pitcher.

(sits there, sad; even the antlers on the Stags cap are hanging down)

We have renewed our open borders agreement with Songhai.

Both the Japanese and the Venetians want to trade for our excess pearls, but they aren't offering much in return. No deal.

The best players available in free agency are Gold Glove winners CF Eric Heath and Houston SP Yassur Murimi. Murimi was picked up by Seattle, and Heath signed a 4-year deal with the Portland Stags.

When it rains, it pours. Five players - all starting pitchers - were inducted into the CBL Hall of Fame: Seattle teammates SP Jason Sedlak and SP Ryan McClung, Washington teammates SP Waleed Harith and SP Julian "The WIzard" Thomas, and Miami's Ryan "Shadow" Brown.

Portland has fired temperamental manager Josh Gauvin and hired even more fiery David Bohnsack to replace him. Bohnsack was formerly the hitting coach for the Atlanta Bison.

First round draft results

Masters Division: At midseason the Argent held a strong lead over the rest of the pack, with New York, Portland, and Houston fighting for the second spot. Buffalo stayed strong all season, and the Houston Citadel kicked it up a notch to easily finish 2nd. The Citadel didn't slow down in the division series, knocking off the Argent in 6 games. Houston LF Yashiya Nakamura hit .550 for the series and was named MVP.

Legends Division: Washington jumped out to an early lead, and Los Angeles and Miami tried to keep pace, but at the trade deadline made some puzzling moves for young players that signaled that they be looking more toward their future than just this season. They might have been a bit overconfident, they slipped out of first place and on the last day of the season were overtaken by the Seattle Anglers, finishing third. Miami continued to show they were for real, beating the strong Seattle club 4 games to 2 in the division series. Miami CF Rahman Hamal hit a HR in each of the final two games to clinch it.

CBL Championship: Excitement was in the air for Miami, seeing the playoffs for the first time and then advancing to the championship series. But they shouldn't have expected any mercy from the Citadel who were suffering a drought of their own. Miami stormed out of the gate, winning the first two games at Houston and then a third at home, but fiery Houston manager Toshiaki 'Toad' Kato held a team meeting in their Miami hotel that inspired the crew to fight back, and they won the next three games to set up a final confrontation in Houston. Kato's speech wasn't enough, and the Miami offense was too much for the Houston pitchers. Miami's first trip to the playoffs became a story they will never forget, one in which they became champions in the final chapter. Rookie pitcher Ben Sietsma was named the series MVP.

SP Chris Morgan of the Buffalo Argent was named Best Pitcher, and Portland Stags SS Josh Irby collected his 2nd MVP award.

Boshnack didn't last long in Portland.

Our ambassador to Mongolia reports that Genghis Khan is preparing to actually attack someone with the fleet he's been hiding in our waters. Hopefully it's not us, I'd really hate to be forced to burn his cities to the ground.

Constantinople is nearing completion of their stadium. Barring any unforeseen complications they are expected to be ready for league play in 1942.

The big name on everyone's mind this offseason is Best Pitcher Award winner Chris Morgan. A 36-year old veteran who's never missed a game due to injury, Morgan seems to get better as he gets older. With his choice of teams, Morgan signed a 2-year contract with a vesting option with the New York Admirals. It's a big loss for Buffalo.

A trio of legends were added to the Hall of Fame in January. Terry Callaway is recognized as one of the best players ever to play third base, and his one-time teammate - 1923's Best Pitcher Award winner Vladmiri Goldobin - played 20 excellent seasons for the New York Admirals. But even they acknowledged that it was an honor just to join SP Abdu Pili. Pili holds the lifetime record for pitchers in ten categories, including wins (488), strikeouts (3114), and complete game shutouts (72). There will never be another player like Pili. At age 40 he won his only Best Pitcher Award, carrying the Houston Citadel to a CBL championship.

Masters Division: The New York Admirals started 12-2 out of the gate and had a 40-19 record by draft day, but they led the Portland Stags by only 1½ games. Chris Morgan pitched even better than the season before for the Admirals, but the rest of the team began to drag its feet and the Stags surged into the lead in August. At the end of the season the Stags were on top of the division, with the Admirals falling behind the Houston Citadel into 3rd place. In the division series the Citadel traded games with the Stags until the 7th game, but ran out of steam at the end. Stags' SP Bryan Barclift held the Citadel to one run over 8 innings and four home runs provided the offense for a lopsided victory.

Legends Division: At midseason the Miami Haberdashers had a one game lead, with five teams separated by only 3½ games. From there the defending champions broke away from the pack and expanded their lead to 10 games at the trade deadline. As the season ended the drama was high, even though Miami had wrapped up the division weeks prior, three teems entered the final day tied; Almaty, Los Angeles, and Washington. The Elephants won the final tiebreaker with a walk-off home run by Hedeon Alalykin. The Haberdashers continued their divisional dominance in the firs round of the playoffs, dispatching the elephants 4 games to 1.

CBL Championship: Portland opened the series with a 7-0 gem by SP Kaseeb "Fungo" bin Aban, but Miami fought back to win the next two games. Miami managed to score against bin Aban in game four, but the Stags went ahead on a 2-run double by Josh "Martini" Irby in the 12th inning. Portland won the final game in Miami 3-1 to send the series back to Portland, and on their home turf SP Bryan Barclift lifted his team to victory with a 7-2 win for their first CBL Championship.

CBL Championship MVP RF Khaldun Yazid was named the season MVP, and last season's Championship MVP SP Ben Sietsma was given the Best Pitcher Award.

When I read the first post at the outset of this I thought "what a silly idea, this guy will run out of gas in a few days." Which just goes to show that I lack vision as well as intelligence :P

This is fantastic work, and I am impressed at the labor you must have put in with Civ, OOTP, and PhotoShop or whatever to generate your very classy illustrations. Just fantastic

Does that mean Philly will finally get a team?

Did I see that right... Did the Admirals win it all in '30 and then go title'less the rest of the 30's? Its been 7 years (I think) since they have even seen the post-season what going on in NY?

Philadelphia is champing at the bit, and has been funneling production resources to help Constantinople to get their stadium built. When they do join and the league expands to 16 teams there has been some suggestion that the league be divided into four divisions, with wild card teams added as the league grows even larger.

As for the Admirals... lots of 3rd place finishes. The NY fans are getting restless.

American scientists have developed the technology to use radio waves for echolocation. This will allow us to build fighters, bombers, paratroopers, and importantly for league expansion, airports.

We have negotiated a deal with Greece to allow us open borders to their country without compromising our own security. They have demanded silver in return for the ability to recruit Greek ballplayers, and the Buffalo Argent have stepped up and answered the call. We have also renewed our open borders policy with Egypt and Japan.

A World Congress has been established to answer growing concerns by other countries and city states that America may be too powerful. We are seen as an aggressive warmonger by some countries because of our harsh retaliation against the Byzantines. Greece has the most backing and we don't trust their intentions, so we threw our votes behind Venice to stay the neutral host for the Congress.

Washington LF John Campbell was the top free agent this offseason. He had some injury issues in recent seasons but is still an offensive force, winning the MVP in 1937. Significant free agent signings:

Washington LF John Campbell -> Houston Citadel
Buffalo C Jason Marcus -> Washington Elephants
Houston SP Tony Diaz -> New York Admirals
Miami 3B Asmerom Simai -> Miami Haberdashers
Washington RP Doug Katz -> Washington Elephants
Boston 3B Calvino Delicati -> Washington Elephants

Writers, fans and baseball pundits celebrated the induction of two new members of the CBA Hall of Fame, SP Hashim Imad and CF Abdul-Jalil Nu'man. "I really don't know what to say during such an enormous moment," Nu'man said, "because words cannot describe all the feelings and thoughts running through my head. The love and appreciation from all my fellow players and all the fans out there has been overwhelming, but I would not be here today without the love and support of my family. My greatest thanks goes to them."

Entering the season the Almaty Diamond Kings had three of the top 10 prospects to watch.

Masters Division: On draft day the New York Admirals had a 3 game lead over the Portland Stags, with the Chicago Miners and Buffalo Argent following close behind. The Admirals strengthened their lead, and by the trade deadline the Miners had crept up to a half game behind Portland. On the last day of the season the Miners beat the Stags 4-3 at home to set up a sudden-death game in Portland, and in that game SS Guignard Falconiere hit a clutch 7th inning double to put the Stags ahead and into the playoffs. The division series was back-and-forth, and finally decided in a 7th game in New York: Portland jumped on Admirals SP Mike Guarino early and earned a return to the championship with a 7-4 victory.

Legends Division: The Washington Elephants stampeded out to an early 5 game lead over the Miami Haberdashers, 12 games ahead of the rest, who were all fighting to stay out of last place. The standings remained the same over the summer, although the San Francisco Zoo did separate themselves from the bottom tier to grab a firm hold of third place. Washington continued to stomp their way through the division, beating Miami 4 games to 2. SP Hide Saito had two complete game victories for the Elephants.

CBL Championship: Portland looked like they were on their way to an easy repeat, gaining a 3 games to 1 advantage over the Elephants, but Washington rallied back to tie the series. Pitching at home, veteran pitchers Mike Trego and Doug Katz were unable to stop the Stag offense and Portland rolled to an impressive 9-5 victory to defend their title. CF Eric Heath batted .385 in the 7 games and was named series MVP.

Portland's decision to hire Hall of Fame SP Waleed Harith as manager last season has paid immediate dividends with their second world title.

Portland Stags SS Josh Irby was named league MVP for the third time, and New York Admirals SP Chris Morgan won his second Best Pitcher Award. Portland 3B Kevin Chandler was selected as Rookie of the Year.

The Atlanta Bison, Almaty Diamond Kings, Los Angeles Steel, San Francisco Zoo, and St. Louis Pioneers are all still seeking their first championship.

In the offseason the commissioner summoned the franchise owners to Chicago for two weeks to discuss the future of the league. Among the topics:

- League Expansion: Philadelphia and Constantinople will be joining the league starting in 1942. There will be an expansion draft.

- League Restructure: At 16 teams it becomes practical to split into four divisions, with no wild card teams. The league will reconsider wild cards if the league expands to 20 teams. There was some grumbling about established rivalries, but the commissioner was able to appease teams by relenting on his plan to reform the original Masters Division, and instead moved the Chicago miners to the new Twilight Division. By the end of the conference most cities were pleased with the outcome.

- Coaching ranks: The pool of available coaches for teams is limited, and the league will be providing camps for veteran players who are interested in staying involved in the league after retirement. They will be given a refresher in league practices and rules, and shown how they can use their experience to fill the ranks of pitching, hitting, and bench coaches, and managerial positions. Language lessons and translators will be available as needed.

Venice has been elected to lead the world congress for now.

The city of Constantinople has completed their stadium. The former capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople borders both the northern and southern coastlines of the southern continent, and is famous for the vast wineries along the southern sea.

14 years ago the city of Philadelphia completed their stadium, and as a holy site has been improved on over time. It stands ready to host throngs of enthusiastic fans. Philadelphia hosts multiple military training facilities, and encompasses the ancient wonder El Dorado, with its many valuable statues and artifacts. It has a wide bay and easy access to shipping lanes from Korea in the East to Japan in the West, making it a center of international trade.

The CBL has restructured and expanded by two teams, the Philadelphia Idols and the Constantinople Vintners.

C Mike "Superfly" Robert, who spent his entire 17-year career as a member of the Los Angeles Steel, was admitted to the Hall of Fame. Robert was one of the game's best hitters in his prime, winning two batting titles and he 1927 MVP award, but was hobbled by knee injuries for the rest of his career. At his reception Robert told the audience, "I just went out and did my job every day... and I guess I must have done it pretty well. Thank you for the honor you have given me today."

During the June draft excitement was in the air, as the two expansion franchises chose their first draftees. With the first overall pick the Philadelphia Idols chose CF Joey "High Roller" Riggs, and the Constantinople Vintners selected SP Jose "Blitz" Carrisales.

Masters Division - At the halfway point the New York Admirals held a 2 game lead over the Washington Elephants. They never faced serious opposition and won the division by 7 games.

Legends Division - The Almaty Diamond Kings established a 6½ game lead over the Houston Citadel early on. The Citadel poured on the steam in the second half, winning the division by 12 games over Almaty.

Twilight Division - On draft day the Chicago Miners led the Miami Haberdashers by 2 games and the Seattle Anglers by 3. Injuries decimated the Chicago outfield and they struggled in the second half, letting the Haberdashers take the division.

Vanguard Division - The Portland Stags looked to repeat their success and led the Buffalo Argent by 1½ games at the break. They fought neck and neck until the final day of the season. Buffalo won their game and the Stags were defeated by SP Chris Morgan who pitched a gem for the Admirals in Portland. Despite winning 103 games the Stags were eliminated from playoff contention.

CBL Playoffs - Miami Vs. Buffalo: The Miami Haberdashers had an easy time with the Buffalo Argent, winning the series 3 games to 1. 2B Nobushige "Bumblebee" Takeda added to his excellent season by collecting the series MVP award.

CBL Playoffs - Houston vs. New York: The series was tied at 2-2, but the final two games became a showcase for New York Admirals RP Edwin Rojas, who picked up 2 victories in 6 innings of relief. There was some speculation that Citadel manager Toshiaki "Toad" Kato had his team playing beyond their ability, and Houston's luck just finally ran out.

CBL Championship - Miami vs. New York: The series opened with a shock, as the Haberdashers won the first two games in New York. Returning home they pushed the series lead to 3-0, and the Admirals finally broke the ice in game 4 as SP Tony Diaz pitched a complete game, surrendering only one unearned run. In game five things looked bad for SP Kyle de Bora, who was forced to leave in the first inning due to injury, but the Admirals bullpen stepped up to pitch a combined shutout. Their heroics were for naught however, returning home the Admirals lost their third and final game on their home turf, and Miami celebrated their championship victory in 6 games. Brilliant Miami SP Randy "Midnight Toaster" Foster earned the series MVP award.

Portland Stags RF Khaldun Yazid was named league MVP (teammate Josh Irby finished 3rd in the voting), and New York Admirals SP Chris Morgan won his 3rd Best Pitcher award.
