Trouble With 1899 League
Hi All,
I'm new to OOTP and just downloaded OOTP 16. I'd like to play an 1899 league managing the Cleveland Spiders with the authentic rosters. I've tried to set it up without a draft but when I start the league several teams have 0 players on the roster so the league cannot continue. Some players exist. The Spiders, for example, have a complete and (as near as I can tell) authentic roster. 1) Is there a setting that I'm missing to fill the empty teams? 2) Is there a DB I can download to fill this in? 3) If no to all of the above, would it be a huge undertaking to try and populate a DB with this information? I'm asking from a technical/OOTP perspective. I can get and massage the data into whatever format is needed. Thanks! |

The teams without players did not really exist in 1899.
OOTP has chosen a fictional team/league format for pre-1901 leagues. You can run the free-agent draft to fill those fake teams.

Spritze,
I haven't figured out how to use BigRod's program, but might that be an option? Or some of the games roster import/export features? Just fishing here, hoping this might get easier down the road.

There were a lot of workarounds needed to play 19th Century. Now OOTP supports those things but still only post 1900. They just need to be turned on for the 19th century.
It can be done but only by hand for now. Sure be nice if it worked since OOTP advertises/claims to be able to be played in this mode.

Edit: To the OP. Play the 1915 A's (they're terrible, too) or something else that interests you after 1901. You won't get nearly as frustrated, and the game will shine.

I have brought this up for six versions. I will not bring it up for OOTP17. No point. 0 for 6 is a trend that does not need to be continued.

I think it would help if we could use the AA and UA abbreviations from the database. Not sure if that would be hard to do.
I do understand why not much support for 19th century play hasnt been added. The transactions are a nightmare. Ive been working on my own spreadsheet for a couple of years now. What i did was try a simplified method. I just released players to the free agency every time they are not on a team. So a player is either released or signed on a date. I tried to have players only sign with a team they actually played for that year. I had players retire the day after their last game played unless they have a retired date. I figure if i perform all the release transactions first before the signings on a date it should work. I am up to 8,274 transactions and almost finished. I still have to look at each trade and make sure the team ids match up as i play a season. Im also gonna look at my book on 19th century players as i do and see if theres anything missing. Here is what it looks like. playerID nameFirst nameLast Transaction Date Transaction Team League abadijo01 John Abadie 06/10/1875 Release PH3 NA abadijo01 John Abadie 09/12/1875 Free Agent Signing BR2 NA abbated01 Ed Abbaticchio 12/31/1898 Release PHI NL abbeybe01 Bert Abbey 12/31/1892 Release WSN NL abbeybe01 Bert Abbey 01/01/1893 Free Agent Signing CHN NL abbeybe01 Bert Abbey 04/19/1895 Release CHN abbeybe01 Bert Abbey 1895 Free Agent Signing BRO NL addybo01 Bob Addy 12/31/1871 Release RC1 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 01/01/1873 Free Agent Signing PH2 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 05/21/1873 Release PH2 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 08/15/1873 Free Agent Signing BS1 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 12/31/1873 Release BS1 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 01/01/1874 Free Agent Signing HR1 NA addybo01 Bob Addy 12/31/1874 Release HR1 NA Last edited by BaseballMan; 01-03-2016 at 09:48 PM. |

I was able to play the 1871 season with all the rookies going to correct teams. Even the expansion. Using my transaction list i had 1872 ready to go but i found the almanac not working so im going to start over. I still have my league files. Anyway this method does seem to work. I do have to release and sign players but the list helps. I dont know if anyone is interested but ill try to share some stats and write down the method i am using. Like what ive found that works and doesnt work.

I could not get the almanac to work before 1901. I did find that i could create a league before 1901 and once i got to 1901 the almanac would work. I guess it will only work with the database that comes with the game for pre-1901 leagues.
I will do without the almanac till 1901 because i would rather have the historically accurate teams and players going to their correct teams. Id like to start on thread on my progress and post some stats but its been so long i dont remember how. |

How many runs were scored in 1871? My previous runthroughs haven't had nearly enough scoring. 1876 may be the earliest practical year to start in.
Retrosheet actually has lineups for 1871, 1872, and 1874.

I'll check when I get home. They should be close as its the actual rosters but exact lineups Im not doing at this point.
I wanna make sure rosters match up. So far with this process they are. It's not hard and seems like it could be automated. |

Here ares some stats with real stats on top and sim on bottom. Keep in mind this is the database that comes with the game. The only thing i did was get players on correct teams and left most settings alone except for turning off trades, financials extra. My main goal is being able to get 19th century players on correct teams.

Not sure if this will work but hopefully you can see the teams that folded and the expansion teams as well as notice that the expansion teams have rookies automatically assigned to them like the post 1900 leagues.

Exactly how I feel about *any* fixes for Associations. Not asking for the moon, just ability to track playoff history and a scrollbar so that you can read the results of the playoff tree, but...nope.
