So, I have an 11-year old son in middle school.

I've convinced his math teachers to play a game of OOTP with their classes, in order to help teach statistics. I'm setting up a league with all of the kids as the players.

I turned off finances, trading, injuries, and all of that stuff. Luckily, there are two teachers (divisions), with 5 classes (teams) each, and each class has around 25 kids (active roster). I'm making all of the players have equal ratings, so no one complains about one kid being super-powered.

We'll sim a week per school day for the rest of the school year, and the teachers will spend the first five minutes of class each day letting the kids look at their web reports and the news stories and such. The teachers will then discuss things like batting average, OBP, ERA, and so on, culminating in a class trip to a Phillies' game.

This is really cool.

Apparently both the teachers and kids are pretty jazzed about it. (As would I, if I were 11.)

I'm giving them all FaceGens, with the warning that the girls get guy faces. I think they'll get a kick out of seeing who turned into a big African American dude, or whatever.

They all filled out a spreadsheet with their position, bats/throws, and birth place, and they picked major league franchises for each team.

But, the first face I created for my skinny white boy son was a chubby Asian face. That generated more than a few giggles chez moi.

Good idea! I'm also big into dominoes and with my gf being a teacher I convinced her to try playing dominoes (scoring games) with them once to help their math skills. That ended being a big hit and she's done it several times now. She's only a substitute teacher at the moment so an ongoing league wouldn't work that well, but once she becomes a full-time one I'll try to get her to do this too!

Get 'em hooked early.

Steve, this is a great idea.

I wish my teachers had done this when I was 11.

My 8th and 9th grade teachers let the class listen to the World Series each afternoon.

Actually I give comic books and sports pages much credit for my reading, writing, spelling and grammar skills.

Baseball also greatly helped my arithmetic skills.

Figuring ERA and Batting Average made my school work easy.

I also had an easy time with fractions and percentages...1-4, 1-3, 1-7, 2-7, 3-9 were easy for me to convert to percentages, too. I soon memorized all of them.

It is strange how something can effect your life so profoundly.

I give credit to my cousin, who was 10 years older than me, for getting me interested in sports. He was 18 and I was 8 at the time. He and I were the only family members who played sports. None of my other cousins played them.

He was a fine semi-pro pitcher. He would pick me up every Sunday afternoon and I would go to his games. They played in the Lauderdale County League in Florence, Alabama. I watched a doubleheader every week and kept track of his strikeouts. I remember one game he struck out 18 batters. He was really good. I have often wondered why he didn't play pro baseball. He liked girls better...went into the Navy in the Korean War...got out and never played baseball anymore. He was good, too.
