His photo is here.

N.B.: Montane's fighter file was originally created by Mark Elwood; I have revised it somewhat.

Not to step on your toes David but here are a couple of Italian FW's I rated and thought I would share. Feel free to make any changes or post an improved version of either of them. I think I am getting a little better at this rating stuff but I have a long ways to go.

Alvaro Cerasini - Italian featherweight champ in the late 40's also had a shot at European FW title but was a TKO victim of Ray Famechon in that bout.

Enzo Correggioli -listed on boxrec as a lightweight but was the Italian FW title from 1946 until losing to Cerasini in 1949.

Stepping on toes

Steve,

You are not stepping on my toes. The more contributions to this thread the better! I wish Chris had posted his ratings of Eduoard Ptak here, in fact. (I'd rated him too, but had neglected to post him here for some reason.) Originally I started the thread to try to bring a little more order out of the chaos of our collective ratings. New fighters are posted all over the place. It is hard to keep track of them all.

I thought about that, but the this matter of toes came to mind. If I do any more Europeans, I'll place them here.

I am enjoying your posts here David, many thanks as always.

Matter of toes

Please, guys. This isn't my thread. It belongs to the TBCB community. Otherwise why post fighter ratings here at all? I'd just keep 'em to myself. . . .

His last name, mine and the town he hails from are all derived from the German word for mouth. I think the town "Dortmund" could be loosely translated as "Where the mouth is" - probably a better hometwon for Ali

WERNER MUNDT JMW (1963-1973)

Hometown - Dortmund, Germany

30(11)-11-2

Mundt scored many victories over local boys but faded fast against better competition, all 11 of his losses were by stoppage. He won the German Jr Middleweight Title in 1965 with a tenth round stoppage over Willy Niederau and lost it in 1967 to Heinrich Dampmann. He beat Bo Petterson twice in Sweden and lost to Poul Knudsen, Mark Rowe, Luiz Fabre, Gerhard Piaskowy and Bo Hogberg.

My post may have been shameless self promotion, but your's is just being a copycat.

By the way, are Meyers and Myers simply alternate spellings or is there an ethnic or nationalistic difference?

Family name

There are at least three sources for the name: the German, the English, and the Hebrew. As you know, once people came to this country, their names became bolluxed up.

There is a famous story about a Polish Jew named Yankel Shatsky. Before he emigrated to America, Yankel was told by his friends to choose a more American-sounding name. His friends suggested James Davenport. On the ship across the Atlantic, Yankel repeated the name to himself over and over. But when he arrived at Ellis Island, when he was confronted by an immigration officer who demanded to know his name, Yankel blanked. "What is your name?" the officer bellowed. "I forget," Yankel whimpered in Yiddish--ikh fergessen. Naturally, his new American name became Ike Ferguson.

That's a great story. I didn't mean to pry, but names and their origins are of great interest to me since I began doing research into my and my wife's family histories. Based on my scant knowedge in the area, I would have pegged 'Meyers' as Scotish/Irish and 'Myers' as Dutch/German. I was simply wondering if I was off base.

Christian Marchand

Algerian flyweight. Born 1935. Fought from 1955 to 1966. Record: 22-18-5 (1).

Marchand started off like a world afire, winning his first twenty fights. Then he moved up to world-class competition. Frankie Jones outpointed him in Scotland. He came back to battle Robert Pollazon to a draw. Marchand then lost his next four bouts--to Mimoun ben Ali, Jean Guerard (twice), and Pierre Rossi. He won only twice more in his career.
