Thanks! That 1966 team finished over .500 though, that's the equivalent of a world championship team in Kansas City Athletics achievements.

Must have really sucked to be a fan of the team in Kansas City and see all the building blocks of their Oakland success being put in place only have them leave to achieve that success elsewhere. A Quebec Nordiques - Colorado Avalanche situation to compare to a little more modern times.

SEPTEMBER 1, 1968

On August 29th, for the first time in almost two seasons the Cincinnati Reds found themselves back atop the National League. After a terrible 1967 season, at least terrible by Reds standards, when they finished 83-79 for their lowest winning percentage in over a decade, the Reds had another slow start this year and management made the dramatic move of dealing Pete Rose to San Francisco. The move woke up the Reds and the club, winners of 6 pennants in the last 10 years, caught fire and went from trailing the first place Dodgers by 8 games on July 8th to a half game ahead of them on August 29th.

From the break until September 1st the Reds went 35-19 and it seems like old times in the National League with yet another Cincinnati-Los Angeles pennant race. The Giants, with their new hitter Rose (.342,6,52) leading the majors in batting average, are trying to crash the party and make it a 3 team race. San Francisco has won 8 straight games and 11 of their last 13. Most importantly, during that stretch the Giants took 4 of 6 from the Dodgers including a 2-game sweep this past weekend.

The big bat in Cincinnati belongs to Jim Wynn (.304,36,80), who has taken over the Major League homerun lead after hitting 18 since the break. All of the Reds key hitters have performed well including second year catcher Johnny Bench (.295,11,47) and veteran Frank Robinson (.309,21,69). As it has been all decade pitching is still a concern but Jim Maloney (14-10, 2.83), Ray Sadecki (16-8, 2.47), Gary Nolan (13-8, 2.16), Claude Osteen (19-5, 3.23) and mid-season pick up Larry Jackson (7-15, 3.02) get plenty of run support from the best offense in the National League.

The Dodgers suffered a big blow to their already weak offense when they lost Roberto Clemente (.265,8,56) to a broken bone in his hand that likely will end his season. Sandy Koufax (20-6, 1.44) continues to dominate while Bill Singer (17-9, 1.89) and Don Sutton (15-7, 2.00) are also pitching very well. Don Drysdale, the other mainstay of the rotation for so long has been banished to the bullpen and was replaced by Tommy John (5-5, 1.95) in the rotation. The Dodgers used to have so much depth to their starting pitching but not this year as Gary Peters (6-13, 3.15) remains the number 5 starter despite subpar numbers.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
After going 40-12 since the all-star break the Boston Red Sox are running away with the American League. With 1968 being the year of the pitcher it is ironic to see the league's two best offenses (Boston and Cincinnati) leading the way over clubs with much better pitching staffs. Tony Conigliaro (.302,33,105) leads the AL in all 3 triple crown categories this season and the 23 year old seems destined to win his first MVP award. Orlando Cepeda (.296,25,68), Rico Petrocelli (.291,16,74), Don Buford (.289,7,56) and rookie Carlton Fisk (.247,16,54) are all key contributors. Carl Yastremski (.251,8,46) struggled early and just as he started to improve his numbers he suffered a back injury in mid-August and will miss another week or two.

NOTES
On August 31st Luis Tiant became the second Pittsburgh Pirates and 4th pitcher to toss a no-hitter this season. Tiant struck out 6 while walking two as the Bucs beat Atlanta 2-0. The other no-hitters were thrown by Pittsburgh's Bob Veale, Washington's Gerry Arrigo and Houston's Don Wilson. I should have noticed it earlier but Wilson's was a perfect game - the first in baseball history for my sim.

In real life Wilson threw a no-hitter, beating Atlanta in 1967, just as he did for his perfect game a year later in the sim. The real life Wilson would also get a second no-hitter in 1969 against Cincinnati, coming a day after the Reds Jim Maloney had no-hit Wilson's Astros. Tragically, Wilson's life would come to an end at age 29 in January 1975 when he was found in the passenger seat of his Ford Thunderbird parked inside the family garage with the engine running. It was ruled an accidental death.

Oakland shortstop Bert Campaneris is on pace to finish with the second most stolen bases in a season since 1901. The post-1900 record for swipes in a season is 93 set by Kiki Cuyler of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1927. The 26 year old Campaneris (.258,3,38) already has 78 steals this season and is closing in on the post-1900 American League record of 88 set by Eddie Collins of the Athletics. Campaneris has led the American League in steals each of the past 4 seasons and had 54 a year ago.

1968 Pennant Race

SEPTEMBER 6-8

The Reds and Dodgers entered a 3-game series in Cincinnati with the Reds enjoying a 2.5 game lead on Los Angeles atop the National League. The Reds took 2 of 3 from St Louis to start the week while the slumping Dodgers dropped 3 straight in Philadelphia. San Francisco was also fading fast as the Giants lost 3 of 4 in Chicago so it was really down to just a two team race.

This crucial series in Cincinnati would begin the 6 remaining games between the two clubs as they also have 3 on the west coast August 17-19.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6

Lee May(.277,19,61) had a pair of hits and an rbi to help Cincinnati take the opener by a 5-2 score in a game that may prove costly to both clubs as each starting pitcher left with an injury. Dodgers starter Don Sutton (15-8, 2.11) left in the top of the third when he turned his ankle while running the bases while Reds starter Gary Nolan (14-8, 2.10) was pulled in the 4th with arm troubles. Both are initially diagnosed as day-to-day and the hope is neither will miss a start.

As for the game Tommy Harper (.207,7,28) also contributed to the Reds offense with a pair of sacrifice flies and Nolan had an rbi single before his arm injury. Willie Davis (.257,4,43) had 3 of the Dodgers 8 hits but, while they seemed to get someone on base every inning, the Dodgers struggled to string anything together.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7

Entering the game 3.5 back of the Reds and on a 4-game losing skid the Dodgers needed a big game from Sandy Koufax (21-7, 1.50) and the lefthander delivered. Koufax held the Reds to 3-hits in a 5-0 win for his record tying 12th shutout of the season - equaling Christy Mathewson's 1910 mark. Frank Howard (.229,19,57) led the Dodgers offense with 2 hits including a 2-run double and rookie Steve Garvey (.275,9,49) added insurance with a 2-run pinch-hit homerun in the 9th inning. Koufax got his major league leading 21st win while Claude Osteen (19-6, 3.24) was tagged with the loss.

As a sidenote, Atlanta's Hank Aaron joined the 3000 hit club with a 3-for-5 day in the Braves 4-3 loss to Houston. Aaron becomes the 25th player in baseball history to reach 3000 hits. Baltimore's Willie Mays is the only other active member but Mickey Mantle is just 26 hits shy. The Yankee great has 68 hits this season but was 0-for-2 in a 1-0 win over Washington today.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8

The rubber match at Crosley Field went back and forth before the Reds finally emerged with a 5-4 victory to end the weekend with a 3.5 game lead on the Dodgers atop the National League. Bill Singer (17-11, 2.05) went the distance for the Dodgers while winning pitcher Jim Maloney (16-10, 2.78) pitched 8 innings before giving way to Billy McCool, who recorded his 13th save of the season.

Frank Robinson's (.306,23,76) 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th proved the difference as the Reds rebounded after the Dodgers scored 3 times in the top of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Wes Parker (.267,2,38) led the Los Angeles attack while veteran shortstop Luis Aparico (.214,3,38) had 2 hits and 2 rbi's for the Dodgers. Art Shamsky (.213,8,23) also hit a 2-run homer for the Reds.

The two clubs will meet again in a little over a week but whether the Dodgers are still in contention at that point remains to be seen. With just 2 wins in their last 9 games, Los Angeles is struggling but 3 games and against the 70-75 St Louis Cardinals and 4 at home to the worst team in baseball (Atlanta) might be the prescription to get the Dodgers back on track before the Reds arrive in Tinseltown.

The Reds have the tougher schedule over the next week as they entertain Houston for 3 before going to San Francisco for a 4 game series. The Giants have also struggled lately, dropping 7 of 9 after getting back into the race with an 8 game winning streak.

MCLAIN FIRES NO-HITTER

Denny McLain has looked nothing like the pitcher you would expect him to be at this stage of my sim but he made history today by throwing a no-hitter. The 24 year old St Louis righthander improved to 7-16 on the season with a 3-0 win over the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers. McLain fanned 4 without walking a single Dodger. Only a 7th inning error by Cardinals shortstop Mike Shannon, which allowed Maury Wills to reach base prevented McLain from throwing the second perfect game in baseball history.

It was the fifth no-hitter of the season but the first by a Cardinals pitcher since Preacher Roe in 1947. Roe, with 2, along with Willy Marshall and Jesse Tannehill are the only pitchers to throw a no-hitter for the St Louis Cardinals.

The no-hitter for McLain was sandwiched in between a pair of 1-0 losses for St Louis to the Dodgers as Tommy John tossed a 4-hit shutout the day before and Don Sutton a 5-hit gem the day after.

Tiger fan,

I was trying to do a similar project with some of the Negro Leaguers joining the majors in 1913, but when I create the fictional players in its area on the right side menu & click for them to be in next year's draft, they keep being left out of the player draft pool, then I would have to sign them onto the teams that I wanted them to be on & then they would get released by AI for some reason.

How do I get the fictional players to appear in the draft, while making them stick to their rosters?

Shawn

I would think you might have the option to have the color barrier enabled still turned on. That would block negro leaguers from playing in MLB or MLB affiliated minor leagues. It is a check-box option on one of the league settings pages - can't remember if it is the historical tab or the rules tab that it appears on.

I didn't really know much about it either. Even more tragic as his young son also died as a result of it.

I remember as a kid hearing about Bob Moose and Danny Frisella dying around the same time....and of course Munson and Lyman Bostock a few years later but did not know about Wilson.

SEPTEMBER 17, 1968

As the Cincinnati Reds prepared to open a 3 game series in Los Angeles, the Dodgers were no longer the main threat the Reds faced in trying to win their 5th pennant in the last seven years. Since the two clubs met just over a week ago at Crosley Field the Pittsburgh Pirates have leapfrogged Los Angeles in the standings thanks to a 16-2 run.

After taking two of three from the Dodgers, the Reds split their 6 games with Houston and San Francisco last week while the Dodgers went 3-4 against St Louis and Atlanta. That leaves Los Angeles 4.5 games back of the Reds and desperate for a sweep of their 3 game set that starts tonight at Dodger Stadium. The Pirates are just 2.5 games out of first place with their sights set firmly on a 3 game showdown at home against Cincinnati starting next Monday. The Pirates and Dodgers have 11 games remaining in their seasons while the Reds have 12 to play.

Code:

NATIONAL	W - L GB
Cincinnati	87 63 -
Pittsburgh	85 66 2.5
Los Angeles	83 68 4.5
San Francisco	80 71 7.5

Philadelphia	75 76 12.5
New York	73 78 14.5
St Louis	71 80 16.5
Chicago 67 85 21.0
Atlanta 56 95 31.5

In that night's action the Reds only managed 4 hits off of Dodgers starter Gary Peters (6-16, 3.02) but one of them was a 3-run homer off the bat of Cincinnati outfielder Jimmy Wynn (.300,38,90). It proved the difference in a 3-1 Reds victory behind 8 solid innings from Mel Queen (2-4, 4.58) with Dick Hall earning his 13th save.

Pittsburgh's pennant hopes suffered a blow as Chris Short (8-11, 3.23) held the Bucs to 1 run and 7 hits in a 3-1 Philadelphia Phillies win over the Pirates. Dick Allen (.254,25,88) and ex-Yankee Frank Fernandez (.155,4,8) each homered for the Phillies. The loss drops the Pirates 3.5 games back of the Reds.

In the American League the Boston Red Sox swept a twin bill from Baltimore with Rico Petrocelli having 5 hits on the day, including a homerun in each game. The Red Sox lead atop the American League on second place Cleveland, who lost 6-5 to Washington, is now 9.5 games. Meanwhile, Bert Campaneris stole his 84th base of the year in Oakland's 5-2 win over the White Sox and Al Kaline had 4 hits, including a grand slam to lead Detroit past the Yankees 8-7.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 1968

The Dodgers playoff hopes are all but done after Sandy Koufax (21-9, 1.57) lost a tough 3-2 decision to Jim Maloney (17-11, 2.97) and the Reds. Jim Wynn homered for the second straight day, a solo shot in the 7th inning that snapped a 2-2 tie and propelled the Reds to victory. The Reds only got 6 hits off of Koufax but hit two solo homeruns - Tommy Harper had the other one - and got an unearned run thanks to a 6th inning error from the normally surehanded Luis Aparacio.

It took 12 innings but the Pirates kept pace with a 5-1 win over the Phillies. 25 year old Pittsburgh rookie Bob Oliver hit a grand slam as a pinch-hitter in the top of the 12th after the Pirates Tommie Sisk (11-9, 2.57) and Phillies Rick Wise (15-8, 2.74) had hooked up in a pretty good pitchers duel. The Pirates remain 3.5 games back of the league leading Reds.

There were a couple of big pitching performances in the American League. Sam McDowell (17-9, 2.36) struck out 11 while allowing just two hits as the Cleveland Indians blanked Washington 1-0 while Minnesota's Mickey Lolich(17-13, 2.73) also threw a 2-hitter in a 9-0 pounding of California.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 1968

A light schedule with just 3 National League contests and nothing going on in the American League. The Reds completed the sweep of the Dodgers with a 5-2 victory behind 8 solid innings from Ray Sadecki (18-9, 2.41). Lead-off man Cesar Tovar(.255,4,43) had 3 hits including a double and a triple as well as a pair of rbi's while Tony Perez (.261,22,77) drove in the other 3 runs with a bases loaded triple. Bill Singer (18-12, 2.09) took the loss as the Dodgers dropped their 5th in a row.

The Pirates were off so they are 4 games back of the 90-63 Reds. San Francisco won it's 5th straight by beating St Louis 6-2 for their 4th win in a row but it is too little, too late for the Giants, who are now tied with the Dodgers 7.5 games back. The only other game had Dave Guisti (13-11, 2.27) toss a 2-hit shutout to pace Houston past Atlanta 4-0.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 1968

The Reds and Pirates both lost on this day so Cincinnati remains 4 games up and their magic number drops to 6. Houston blasted Cincinnati 7-1 as Mike Cuellar (10-12, 3.40) held the powerful Reds offense to 5 hits while Houston bats torched Claude Osteen (19-7, 3.35) for 7 runs (6 earned) on 14 innings in 6+ plus innings. The Dodgers got a win, thumping St Louis 9-0 as Tommy John tossed a 2-hitter, but they are still 6.5 games back.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 1968

The Reds and Pirates each get shutout victories to keep the Reds lead at 4 games. Larry Jackson got his 4th win since joining the Reds in a mid-season deal with San Francisco and his first shutout in a Cincinnati uniform as his Reds blanked Houston 3-0. Johnny Bench (.297,11,53) led the way for Cincinnati with 3 hits including a double, and a pair of rbi's.

Bob Veale (12-12,2.09) tossed a 3-hitter to help Pittsburgh past the Chicago Cubs 9-0. Willie Stargell (.233,15,53) had 4 hits and a came a triple short of hitting for the cycle. The Dodgers were officially eliminated with a 3-1, 14 inning loss to St Louis.

Despite losing 3-1 to the Yankees the Boston Red Sox clinched their first pennant since 1963 after Cleveland lost to California.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22, 1968

The Reds magic number is now 3 after a come from behind 5-2 win in Houston. The Astros led 2-1 going into the 9th inning before the Reds scratched out the tying run on a sac fly from Hal McRae (.230,3,15). Cincinnati put the game away with 3 runs in the 10th courtesy of an rbi double from Jim Wynn - his third hit of the game - and a 2-run triple off the bat of Art Shamsky.

The Pirates kept pace witha 6-1 win over the Cubs as Bill Mazeroski (.228,3,26) led the way with 3 hits while Richie Hebner (.284,2,37) and rookie catcher Manny Sanguillen (.295,4,34) each drove in a pair of runs. Next up for the Pirates is a 3-game series at home against Cincinnati. Pittsburgh will need a sweep to get within 1 game of the Reds heading into the season's final weekend.

Other games of note saw Bob Gibson (19-9, 1.72) toss a 2-hit shutout as the Cardinals blanked Los Angeles 1-0. 17 year old rookie Greg Luzinski (.264,12,46) homered twice and drove in 5 runs but it wasn't enough as his Phillies lost 6-5 to the Mets

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 1968
PIRATES BEAT REDS IN SERIES OPENER

The Pittsburgh Pirates kept their slim pennant hopes alive with a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a 3 game series. The Reds entered the series leading the Pirates by 4 games with 6 contests remaining for each club.

Cincinnati strikes first as with 2-out in the opening inning Frank Robinson hits his 527th career homerun to stake the Reds to an early 1-0 lead. The lead held until the fourth inning when Reds starter Jim Maloney allowed Pittsburgh to load the bases before Bobby Tolan hit a 2-run double to give his Pirates the lead. In the 6th inning Pittsburgh extended it's lead to 4-1 as Manny Sanguillen hit an rbi triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pirates pitcher Woodie Fryman. Willie Stargell hit a solo homerun to lead off the 7th to make the score 5-1.

Fryman, who allowed 8 hits but did not walk a man, seemed to be pitching with men on base all game but always found a way out of the jam. He went the distance to improve his record to 12-9 on the season while fanning 6. Jim Maloney took the loss to drop to 17-12 for the Reds.

NOTES
Bert Campaneris stole another base today to give him 85 for the Oakland Athletics. The A's beat Chicago 2-1 thanks to a game ending walk off 2-run homer from Oakland rookie Darrell Evans. The American League pennant winning Boston Red Sox seem to be limping into the World Series as the Bosox where thumped 9-1 by Washington for their 4th straight loss.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 1968

Talk about a dramatic game. The Pittsburgh Pirates moved to within 2 games of the first place Reds after beating Cincinnati 1-0 in a 10 inning thriller. Pittsburgh starter Tommie Sisk was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning despite having not allowed a Cincinnati hit. Bob Moose and Joe Gibbon would each pitch two innings and allow 1 hit each but keep the Reds off the scoresheet.

Meanwhile Ray Sadecki went 9 shutout innings, fanning 10 while allowing 7 hits before giving way to Billy McCool to start the 10th. McCool lost the game by allowing 3 straight singles: to pinch-hitter Bob Oliver, Bobby Tolan and finally Willie Stargell, who drove in Oliver with the game's only run.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 1968

We have a great finish coming up as the Pirates moved to within a game of the Reds with a 3-1 victory to complete a 3-game sweep. Luis Tiant (15-11, 2.42) and relievers Moose and Gibbon combined on a 4-hitter to get the win. Claude Osteen (19-8) took the loss despite going the distance for Cincinnati. Bill Mazeroski's 4th homer of the season gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the second and Bob Bailey's two-run double in the 7th extended it to 3-0. The Reds loaded the bases with none out in the top of the ninth but could only get 1 run, on a Jim Wynn fielder's choice.

The Reds now return home to finish the season with 3 games against San Francisco while the Pirates hope to keep the momentum of a 5 game winning streak going as they end the season with a weekend series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

FINAL WEEKEND 1968

So with 3 games remaining for each club the Cincinnati Reds have a 1 game lead on the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds will end their season with 3 games at home to San Francisco while the Pirates are in Chicago to face the Cubs.

FRIDAY

Both teams have convincing victories as the Reds score 7 runs in the 6th in to hammer the Giants 14-6 while the Pirates break open a tight game with a 6-run 8th inning enroute to a 9-2 victory. In Cincinnati, the visitors led 4-0 before Cincinnati bats got going in the bottom of the 5th with a run, followed by 7 in the 6th and 6 more in the 7th. Frank Robinson had the big stick for the Reds, homering twice and driving in 5 while Johnny Bench hit a grand slam to make a winner out of Larry Jackson. Pete Rose, who was dealt to the Giants for Jackson in July, went 2-for-5 to help keep his hold on the batting title. Rose is batting .338, which is the best average in either league.

In Chicago, the Pirates overcame an early 2-0 deficit and responded with 9 unaswered runs. Bob Veale only went 5 2/3 but got his 13th win of the season thanks to outstanding relief work from Bob Moose and Ray Young. Rookie catcher Manny Sanguillen (.301,4,35) had 4 hits to boost his season average over .300 while Gene Alley chipped in with 3 hits and Bill Mazeroski had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs for winners.

NOTES - Bert Campaneris got his 88th stolen base in the game. He has established a modern day(post 1901) AL record but he is still 5 shy of the major league mark of 93 set by Kiki Cuyler in 1927 while with the Pirates. Willie Horton hit his American League leading 37th homer to help the Detroit Tigers maul Washington 12-1. Boston's 3 game winning streak came to an end with an 8-1 loss at Fenway to the Yankees. Tony Conigliaro (.302,34,115) went 1-for-4 in the game. A month ago we were talking a triple crown for Conigliaro but he has only hit 1 homer this month and has fallen out of the batting average lead as well. Conigliaro's 115 rbi's should prevail in that category as Oakland's Reggie Jackson - number two on the AL list - is 7 back with 2 games to play. Conigliaro may still win the batting crown but he is now third behind Minnesota's Rod Carew (.306) and Boston teammate Rico Petrocelli (.304).

The Mets (79-81) will need to win their final 2 games over the Phillies to finish .500 for the first time in franchise history but even if they don't there are so positive signs coming from Shea Stadium. Tom Seaver pitched a 2-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Phillies today to improve his record to 20-11 as the 23 year finally had the dominant breakout season the Mets have been waiting for. Paul Blair (.280,16,78) was healthy all year after missing almost 2 full seasons with an injury. 21 year old Nolan Ryan had a 0.36 era out of the Mets pen in 18 appearances after being called up from AAA Jacksonsville were he was 7-3. There was bad news for the Mets as well, as there always seems to be. Ken Singleton hit .314 over his first 51 games before the 21 year old suffered a season ending injury.

SATURDAY

The Pirates pennant hopes took a huge blow after they lost 7-1 to the Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh is now 1.5 games back of Cincinnati as the Reds-Giants game was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader tomorrow. The Pirates need to beat the Cubs tomorrow and hope the Giants sweep the twin-bill in order to force a 1-game playoff to determine the National League pennant winner.

Steve Blass took the loss for the Bucs to drop to 12-13. He lasted just 5 innings allowing 4 runs including a 2-run homer by Ron Santo. Curt Motton also drove in a pair of runs for the Cubs, who improve to 69-92 with the victory.

NOTES - Campaneris got his 89th steal but the A's lost 8-5 to Minnesota. The A's first season in Oakland will end up below .500 but the club will be improved slightly upon last season and they are building a team to fear for the future. Here is how their young roster looks:

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29, 1968
REDS CLINCH PENNANT!

For the fifth time in the last seven years and 7th in 11 years the Cincinnati Reds are National League champions. The Reds entered the final day of the season needing at least a split of their doubleheader with San Francisco or a Pittsburgh loss in Chicago to avoid a playoff tie-breaker.

The Reds took care of business early, winning the opener 4-3 over the Giants thanks to a 3-hit day from first baseman Lee May. May delivered the game winning run with an rbi single in the bottom of the 8th to snap a 3-3 tie. Frank Robinson chipped in with 2 hits and scored twice as Billy McCool got the win in relief of Jim Maloney. Juan Marichal took the loss to see his record drop to 16-13 on the year.

The Giants rebounded to win the second game by a 5-2 score, but it was meaningless to all of the Reds with the possible exception of Claude Osteen, who was denied his 20th victory of the season. Ex-Red Pete Rose had 3 hits in the game to go with a pair in the opener, raising his season average to .341 and giving him his 3rd National League batting crown.

The Pirates did their part to stay alive, beating Chicago 2-1 thanks to a combined 4-hitter from Woodie Fryman and reliever Bob Moose, who earned his 25th save of the season. Unfortunately their 93-69 record left Pittsburgh 1 game shy of the Reds and stretched their pennant drought to 34 years.

OTHER NOTES - 22 year old Minnesota second baseman Rod Carew went 3-for-4 in the Twins 7-1 win over Oakland to finish with a .309 batting average and win his first career American League batting title. Oakland shortstop Bert Campaneris only got on base once in the contest but it was enough to allow him to swipe his 90th base of the season, which is a new American League record.

The Boston Red Sox led the majors with 103 wins this season and the last one came in dramatic fashion. Orlando Cepeda hit a walk-off homerun with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth to lift Boston past the Yankees 2-1 and give them some positive momentum heading into the World Series. Tony Conigliaro (.304,36,121) also homered for the Red Sox and, despite a September slump, still appears to be the favourite for American League MVP honours.

The Mets got to .500 after winning their final 4 games of the season. Today they beat the Phillies 6-2 behind a 3-hit performance from pitcher Jim Hardin.

The World Series will begin Wednesday in Boston and will be a rematch of the 1963 Fall Classic, which the Red Sox won in 6 games.

I think I am going to watch Vida Blue in '69. I remember him in 1970 when he had 10 or 12 wins before the All Star break. I remember that ASG when Jackson hit one off the light standard in RF at Tiger Stadium. If the lights hadn't stop it the ball may have landed in Canada.

Quick question for you. I see that kaufax is still pitching in 68. I like my players to play past end year also.
Are you doing anything to manually adjust players like him. Because in a recalc game he will stay with his 1965 rankings forever and might be still pitching at age 50 with those 65 ratings. I know every 3 years I go through and edit down those players whose last year in the bigs was a super star year...bill keister is another example.
Just wondering if you had a plan or system to do it that was better than my way.
Cheers

I have not edited any player ratings at all. I did not know that 3 year recalc kept the ratings when it runs out of active years. I always thought the development engine kicked in at that point but I have not done a long term sim with recalc. Guess I will have to keep an eye on Koufax and considered retiring or editing him if needed.

As a side note, it did not seem to happen to Keister in this sim. He retired in 1903 in real life. In the sim he played until 1907 with the Cubs but was a reserve the final 3 years, found himself in the minors in 1908 where he put up good numbers but retired after the 1909 season.

1968 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
BOSTON RED SOX vs CINCINNATI REDS

It's rematch of the 1963 series as the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds meet for the second time in a World Series. The Red Sox of '63 were led by the MVP and Cy Young season of Bill Monboquette (21-5, 1.85) as they won a franchise record 108 games to beat the Yankees by 2 for the American League pennant. Monboquette is still a member of the Red Sox this time around but in a much diminished capacity as one of the long relievers out of the Boston pen. However, many of the other key players then are still playing integral roles for this version of the Sox such as Orlando Cepeda, Carl Yastremski, Don Buford and Tony Conigliaro.

The Red Sox won the '63 series in 6 games despite the fact that Monboquette failed to earn a decision in his two World Series starts. 23 year old Dennis Bennett, who had the only 20 win season of his major league career in 1963 and now, at 28, is back in the minors, won 2 games in the '63 series including the clinching game. Albie Pearson, now retired, led the Sox in batting that series by hitting .577 and was named the Series MVP edging out Yastremski (.458,2,6) and Cepeda (.310,2,5).

The Red Sox had an offensive juggernaut during the early 1960's but the 1963 clubs was the only one that could get past the Yankees as New York claimed 5 pennants from 1960-65. The difference in 1963 was Monboquette. While never lacking hitting, a shortage of quality pitching has always seemed to cost the Red Sox. A lack of a dominant starter hurt Boston during it's two decades with the greates hitter in the game. Ted Williams could only lead Boston to 2 pennants and 1 World Series title during the 1940's and 50s. The Red Sox lost to St Louis in 6 games in 1941 but ended the Cardinals streak of 5 straight World Series titles in 1946.

The one era Boston had a period of dominance was a time when they had outstanding pitching. The Red Sox won 4 straight World Series titles between 1934-37. Williams arrived for the final two but the key to those Red Sox clubs was the pitching of Dizzy Dean and Tex Carlton, who combined to go 155-62 over those 4 years with Dean winning 3 Cy Youngs in the that period.

In all, the Red Sox have won 6 World Series titles: 1963, 1946, 1937,1936,1935 and 1934. Boston was on the losing end of the World Series just twice; in 1941 and 1914. The 1914 club had Cy Young winner Rube Marquard go 25-12 that season while 19 year old rookie Babe Ruth was 9-7 with 4 homers in 40 appearances. It was a heartbreaking series for the Red Sox as they won the first three games of the series only to see the Brooklyn Robins roar back and win 4 straight.

CINCINNATI REDS

Much has been said already in this thread about the Reds. They have been the National League's dominant club the past decade with 7 pennants and 3 World Series titles in the past 11 years. Like Boston, the Reds are built around their offense and also like Boston, pitching has been a concern.

Unlike the Red Sox, Cincinnati did not enjoy any success prior to this past decade. The Reds won 3 National League pennants - in 1900, 1917 and 1940 but lost in the World Series on each occasion.

1968 WORLD SERIES GAME ONE

IT'S MAY DAY FOR REDS

The Cincinnati Reds drew first blood in the 1968 World Series thanks to a 3-hit, 4 rbi performance from first baseman Lee May. May's exploits, combined with a complete game 4-hitter from pitcher Ray Sadecki, gave the Reds a 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. May hit a solo homer in the fourth inning off of Boston starter and losing pitcher Bob Turley. He also delivered a 2-run single in the 5th to put the Reds up 6-1 at the time and ended the scoring with an insurance rbi single in the top of the ninth inning.

The Red Sox were baffled by the pitching of Sadecki all game as the Reds starter only struck out two batters, but kept the Boston hitters off balance by mixing speeds that forced a number of harmless pop fly outs. Boston did take the lead in the bottom of the second when Tony Conigliaro got the first hit of the game, a solo homerun over the Green Monster.

However, Cincinnati replied quickly when Hal McRae led off the Reds third with a solo shot of his own. Before the inning was over Tony Perez had delivered an rbi double and the Reds increased their lead to 3-1. When Boston starter Turley left for a pinch-hitter after 5 innings, his club was trailing 6-1. The Red Sox did score a pair of runs in the 5th but that would be as close as they would get.
