Bob Uecker Strikes Back

15:39, Milwaukee

The City of Milwaukee has been rocked today by the sudden, unexpected demise of their PT heroes, the Milwaukee Northern Alliance (MNA). After 20 seasons of play, the team were the subject of a hostile overnight takeover by a ghost they thought left behind - Bob Uecker.

Once a staple of the team's foundation as Uecker's Underdogs, and indeed their successor, Bob's Milwaukee All-Stars, Uecker was forced out as the team turned to become the MNA, looking to broaden their appeal & horizons by joining up with other Northern-based and Canadian cities. Once the crowd favourite of Miller Park, Bob disappeared into the shadows, bereft as his team moved on without him.

Twenty years later, a loophole in his settlement contract has been used to vicious effect, as Bob Uecker swooped in to gain complete control of the Milwaukee franchise. Already at Miller Park, we have seen every MNA logo replaced with an old Milwaukee Braves image, and the stadium itself has been renamed 'Bob Ballpark'. The team itself? They'll now be known as Uecker's New Clothes, a stunning statement of this turn of events.

Purely an ownership move? Don't be fooled - Bob Uecker has already listed himself as the team's backup Catcher, undeterred by their Diamond league status. Former backup Yasmani Grandal was unavailable for comment.

It's clearly going to be a hell of a ride for this franchise. The only brief public words from the new owner? "You want rid of me again? Get up! Get up! GONE! OUTTA HERE!"

If there was one moment - one truly golden moment - that Bob Uecker dreamed of happening in his new stint as backup Catcher on a Diamond League PT team, it probably didn't come close to the hero-defining moment that occurred at Bob Ballpark tonight.

On a home-stand appearance, against a team known as the Chicago Cubs, no less, there had been something of a mixed response to Bob taking to the field in the famous Milwaukee jersey; resignation to outright boo the legend of the City, yet little desire to cheer the man who took such drastic measures in asserting ownership just weeks prior.

No better time to come up to bat then, with bases loaded in the Bottom of the 6th.

Cautiously, the crowd lifted itself, murmurings turning into shouts of "Go get 'em Bob!". Chicago's pitcher Jose Rijo steadied himself, ready to shut the inning down... but Bob was never going to let the moment slip.

Over the fence, far away, Uecker's bat provided a moment that Milwaukee will never forget - a Grand Slam from the backup catcher who could. As he rounded the bases, the only thing missing was Bob's voice announcing the occasion. Perhaps Uecker may have a plan for the franchise after all - or at the very least, some magic to accompany the adventure.
