Gil Hodges 1b 43?

I love that I learning more about older players.
Many I never heard of....many i heard of but not the details of the players.

Case file: Gil Hodges all star 1950
BL 66
1b field rating 43

Interesting player because he cranks the homers against righties.
I was curious why he was such a defensive liability.
Look Gil up and the first line i read is what a great defensive player he was.

Just another case of how i don't whether to trust the rating or not.
Clemente is fast not a truck (ok he might not steal like brock)
Mike Marshall has tons of stamina from bullpen
I am sure there are plenty of others

This is the PT20 forum so this doesn't belong here. They've changed the error calculation for ratings on older players so this will be different when PT 2.0 is released.

Fielding ability is notoriously hard to quantify. However, if you look at Hodges lifetime stats, and his stats for 1950, for that matter, he appears to be an average fielder at 1B. This is what OOTP tries to replicate -- stats. Sometimes, a player's reputation matches his stats. Sometimes, it does not (esp. when we're examining a single season).

For his career, Hodges' fielding PCT was slightly better than average for a first baseman. But he was worse than average in RF/9 and RF/G. The same could be said of the 1950 season, in particular. I don't know the OOTP formula for rating defensive skills. But the stats suggest Hodges was average at best defensively (compared to the rest of the league) in 1950.
