1932 Hall of Fame

Reynaldo Rivera, RHP

Rivera begins a theme of this year's candidates and inductees - they are all borderline HOF, none are clearly past the line. Rivera was a two-time all-star and one-time World Champion and spent most of his career with the Mets, with 14 straight years of 3-4 WAR (except one year of 2.2). He was originally drafted with the 53rd overall pick by the Mets out of St Marys, though he was born in Venezuela.

Career Stats: 3762.7 IP, 769 BB, 1046 K, 3.33 FIP, 95 FIP-, 58.6 WAR, 57 JAWS

Juan Sánchez, CF

Sanchez was on a clear path to the HOF early in his career but provided almost no value in his 30s. He was also born in Venezuela but signed as a scouting discovery in 1913. He won an MVP, 5 gold gloves, one silver slugger, and one AL Division Series MVP. He went to 5 all-star games.

Career Stats: 6135 PA, 1652 H, 323 SB, .353 wOBA, 111 wRC+, 155.9 ZR, 42.5 WAR, 38.8 JAWS

Rory Shew, SS

Shew won two gold gloves, a silver slugger, an AL Championship Series MVP, and went to one all-star game. He was drafted 6th overall in 1912 out of UC Santa Barbara and missed quite a lot of time due to injury throughout his career. Despite missing so many games every year, he still managed to put up 8 seasons of 3-6 WAR.

Career Stats: 8091 PA, 1994 H, 291 SB, .322 wOBA, 99 wRC+, 169.2 ZR, 44.3 WAR, 38.3 JAWS

Jimmy Canales, SS

Canales has more hardware in his trophy case than some others this year but never had enough of a peak or a long enough career to make it into the HOF. He was drafted 6th overall in 1919 out of Mississippi State and won Rookie of the Year in 1920. He one won gold glove and one silver slugger and also attended 5 all-star games. He was World Champ with the Padres in 1928.

Career Stats: 7140 PA, 2031 H, 264 SB, .350 wOBA, 109 wRC+, 99.0 ZR, .350 wOBA, 109 wRC+, 37.9 WAR, 35.6 JAWS

Scott Taylor, C

Taylor had a very good career for a catcher - just behind Hall of Famers Josh Fowler and Luke McCaffrey. He went to three all-star games and won two silver slugger awards. He was drafted 18th overall in 1915 out of TCU.

Career Stats: 6059 PA, 1497 H, .338 wOBA, 101 wRC+, 8.3 ZR, 31.5 WAR, 27.5 JAWS

This is quite possibly the worst FA year so far. The only name of any familiarity is 3-time all-star Woody Garner.

Auggie Lee, RHP

We continue the theme from last year where the players are all borderline candidates. Lee's career WAR might be the lowest of any HOF pitcher for the entire league history for the next 100 years. However, his peak was so high, the Hall wouldn't be complete without him. He won 5 Pitcher of the Year awards in the 1920s and went to 8 all-star games. Once he tore the flexor tendon in his elbow, his career was effectively done and he was unable to put together another even average campaign. Lee was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cubs in 1916 out of Elk Grove High School.

Career Stats: 2207 IP, 509 BB, 987 K, 3.41 FIP, 85 FIp-, 46.6 WAR, 49.9 JAWS

Andy Qumi, LF

Qumi was one of the preeminent hitters of the league throughout his career, going to 6 all-star games and winning 10 silver sluggers. He was also the NL Division Series MVP. Despite tearing his ACL in May, Qumi was drafted 1st overall in 1913 out of Fresno State. The Rockies gamble payed off as this was one first overall pick that did not disappoint. He retires with the 4th most hits in major league history

Career Stats: 10284 PA, 2617 H, 126 HR, 386 SB, .375 wOBA, 132 wRC+, -34.4 ZR, 46.7 WAR, 37.6 JAWS

Yada Adisimah, LF

Adisimah was drafted in the 1st round of 1916 out of Pepperdine and quickly contributed to the big league club, making the first of his 5 all-star appearances in 1917. He also won three silver sluggers, was a Division Series MVP, and won a World Series with the Twins.

Career Stats: 7819 PA, 2338 H, 662 SB, .369 wOBA, 125 wRC+, -15.2 ZR, 37.9 WAR, 33.6 JAWS

Retired numbers

As players retire, I update each team's retired number history. This is another fun way to keep track of the league as it evolves. Currently the Mets (Chris Russell, Geraldo Morales, Jason Hunnicutt, A.J. Aranha, Reynaldo Rivera) and Athletics (Nick Caruso, Lochlan Collyer, J.D. Hall, Jonathan Kinnunen, Benny Wurdeman) have the most retired numbers.

Not all players are in the Hall of Fame but I try to find those who spent 10+ years with the team and are typically either HOF or borderline candidates. The major annoyance with this is that many players have exactly half of their career with one team, hit free agency, and bounce around to a bunch of other teams. But...that's life.

Not much happened in the free agent market as Garner went to the A's for a one-year deal.

Nicolas Fernandez is the top prospect this year. He was a scouting discovery in 1927 out of Venezuela and has recently started fulfilling his potential.

Marcello Adler didn't make his debut last year and is slated to be in the Braves bullpen this year, though he does have the ability to be a starter.
