Game Crashes Creating tar.gz or when extracting tar.gz files for online league

So I am running OOTP17 from Steam and when I go to download the league file OOTP crashes with the following segfault error

[Mon Jan 30 19:31:36 2017] ootp_linux64r[6464]: segfault at 7fba00000008 ip 00007fba6f99438c sp 00007fffbba41940 error 4 in libc-2.23.so[7fba6f927000+1bf000]

If I manually untar the tar.gz file and put the files where they belong everything works as advertised.

I see the same issue when creating reports for our online hosting of the reports files. It creates all the files and then when it goes to tar.gz the files it locks up and just force closes.

I do not think anything has changed recently, but looking for other users with the same issue and if so how they fixed it. Some searching on the web indicates that error 4 in libc may be related to a corrupt logo?

This is a really late response, but I had the same thing happen. My work-around is to start Steam with this command:

STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 steam

There was a Steam client update that switched the behavior on Linux to use host OS libraries instead of the Steam-packaged libraries, and on some Linux OS, the game crashes with the host libraries.

I filed an OOTP bug for this, gave them all the details, and there was no progress.

I'm having the same issue. But I'm not running through Steam. Haven't found a fix.
