Player line question
I was looking at this site NHL Starting Goalies and Line Combinations | DailyFaceoff.com
to learn the different lines in hockey and I noticed there were four lines for wingers / centers but only three lines of defensemen. How do you know which defensemen to play on that fourth winger / center line?? |

If you're playing in the nhl you should have in your nightly lineup 4 centres, 4 left wingers, 4 right wingers, 3 left defence, 3 right defence and 2 goalies. On the line setup screen they have spots for 4 pairs of defencemen, but you will only be using three pairs. You just set the time on ice so that the fourth pair has 0 minutes. It usually works out that your top d-pair will play about 22 minutes, then the 2nd pair around 20 and the third pair around 18 those numbers can vary depending on how good each of your pairs are

And note that any pair of defencemen can be on the ice with any forward line. Defencemen usually play more minutes than forwards, so there is no necessary link between a defence pair and a forward line. A forward line on the ice might come off and be replaced by a new line, while the defence pair stays on the ice.
