Real vs make believe, which is better?
This is such a great time of year. Love post season baseball...Go Tigers! That being said, why do I find that my thoughts keep drifting back to my RDL, the random debut league I'm playing. Maybe it's the fact that with 19 games remaining, the Cleveland Spiders hold a 1 game lead over the Cincinnati Atoms and 2 game lead over the Detroit Sabercats. Maybe it's the fact that Frank Howard just crushed his 54th home run breaking Mickey Mantles single season record. Or the fact that Howard's teammate Dale Murphy has 45 bombs. Howard and Murphy combined have more home runs than several teams have for the season. Maybe it's watching Bob Welch once again dominate the NL while a young Mark Mulder does the same in the AL. Or it could be the excitement of watching Houston battle Pittsburgh for the leagues worst record with the #1 pick in the draft on the line. Houston looked like they had it all sewed up about a few weeks ago, but a hot streak has put the pick in jeopardy. Could this be the year Babe Ruth shows up? Ty Cobb? Walter Johnson? Whatever it is, I can't stop thinking about it. I love this game.

I don't think there is a 'better'. So far I only play real... but as my 2013 quickstart in now in 2014 and I am planning to continue, it will become fictional. We'll see if I still like it.
Some people never play real. I am running three 'dynasties' now (a 1977 start Blue Jays, now in 1980 - the 2013 quickstart Jays, now in 2014 - and a newly started 1901 Brooklyn Superbas) What will be next? Certainly not a purely fictional league, but I MIGHT try a random debut league. Just to see... Last edited by rpriske; 10-03-2013 at 02:52 PM. |

Real. Because you can share it with your friends and family elsewhere via phone, Internet or later get-togethers.
"Did you see that play Simmons made?" "Yes! It was $&@%ing amazing!"

But the next best thing to real is OOTP.

I'm going to have to say OOTP is better. I get so much more invested in my games than I do in the real MLB season. Either way, go Rays!
It's also strange (if I'm playing an MLB league) to see a player who has become a superstar in my world appearing as a rookie in real life. I've had that happen a couple times so far, watching the final games and playoff games of teams I otherwise wouldn't get to see. |

I don't know about "better", but I do know that if the MLB folds up shop, my life won't change much......on the other hand, if my computer folds up and I can't play OOTP, then I'll have a big block of hours in every day I'll need to fill by doing something different......

LOL, No contest. This is like asking if i think a fake girlfriend is better then a real one. Nothing beats watching a real live baseball game in person. The excitement of a Major league game, the relaxing atmosphere of a minor league game, the team spirit at a college baseball game, or the proud moments of watching your kids play in little league. OOTP just helps me get through the withdrawals in between. Especially during the off-season.

your analogy would be more appropriate to the question of whether being an MLB GM or an OOTP GM is more exciting......of course being a real GM would be more exciting, but OOTP is the only one hiring..... |

I'd take OOTP's announcing 'crew' over FOX's

Some of my "real girlfriends" left a lot to be desired.

I have no problem living in a fantasy world. My fantasy world is awesome. I can manage ten baseball games, go on a massive shooting spree with no repercussions, sing the lead with my favorite band in a rock concert, lead my football team to the Super Bowl, and still have time to save the galaxy once or twice before crawling into bed next to Mila Kunis.

With no horse in the race this year I could care less about MLB. But my Capitals are in 1st place. My White Sox in my RD league are in 2nd place battling with Oakland. My Chicago Fire are in last again. My Bears are 9-0.
I do love watching baseball while playing OOTP.

Sorry made me this of Joe Pesci from Goodfellas. I was gonna change it to reflect the thread, but it's best left as is.

At least in my OOTP world I don't have to sit through a half inning whine and cheese fest by a couple of ex players on how horrible it is that Dan Uggla was left off the Braves playoff roster. He had 22 home runs afterall.
