I hope he preforms well. It would be great for the Yanks to have him at 100% this year.

Is the roster final yet? I read about these decisions: Phelps over Phillips, Nieves over Pratt, Henn over Villone, all no-brainers I guess, given ST performances. Did my man Basak make the squad? I don't think so, because Cairo is already the other backup IF. Regardless, I agree with all of the position player moves made so far, which ticks me off royally. Nothing to complain about!
Astros33, from your lips to God's ears. Strange as it seemed when we began this thread, we find ourselves actually needing Pavano to pull through this year if the Yanks are going to have a solid pitching staff. |

Signed, Sammy "Cactus League Killer" Sosa P.S. The best offensive performance of the 2007 spring training has been delivered by Scott Hairston (career .236 EQA). But, I'll grant you that Hairston is more likely than Sosa to have a 2007 season of any quality. |

Please do not flame. I agree with you about the unreliability of ST stats. However, there has to be some barometer with which to make decisions, and the players I talked about above either played themselves on or off the Yankees with their performances this spring. Sammy lost me with the corked bat, never mind the silly nonsense before Congress about steroid use. Last edited by 1998 Yankees; 03-31-2007 at 12:13 PM. |

Hairston's line in 1806 minor league at bats is .322 BA, .401 OBP, .571 SLG. So, yeah, he's slayed them down on the farm. His line in three major league seasons, covering 374 at bats, is .246 BA, .289 OBP, .430 SLG. And, he's not a prospect, at age 27. It will be interesting to see which one of those career lines is more indicative of Hairston's ability/future.

If he returns to the form he was in when he left the marlins, it will be like the Yankees added an ace during free agency. And suddenly his contract wouldn't look so bad. |

Yeah, CommishJoe shot me down like a dog for prematurely taking credit for calling this late last year. He was right; Pavano opening the season is nothing. But it would be something if he did have a good year. Then CommishJoe will sign back on to bestow to me my rightful laurels, I am sure. I will attempt to be graceful and humble in victory, and fail of course.

If people are talking about the Yanks adding an ace during free agency they're alot more likely to be talking about Andy Pettitte. Pavano has never been anything more than slightly above average. Even in 2004, his peripherals were pedestrian.

I can't watch the game as I'm stuck at work. However, I did notice through a web live cast that A-Rod has already committed an error and struck out with a runner in scoring position. Wonderful way to start the season *sigh*
Nice to see Giambi come through in the clutch though.
