There's certainly no guarantee it would translate to the majors, but I think he's earned the chance to find out. He's fun to watch pitch, he makes guys look dumb a lot. He even started games last year because the Clippers had no one else and did that well too.

The Yankees seem to value him more in trade discussions than they actually do for their own roster, so he's pretty much stuck. I still love this gem of a quote from Mark Newman: “He’s shown enough that we’re not giving him away. He’s put up numbers, so something’s going on there. You’ve got to honor the performance.”

They haven't honored his performance. At all.

"He can probably play third and short, too." Joe Torre on Melky Cabrera.

Alright, Joe, let's calm down a bit. I know how much you want to get rid of Alex.

That would save the Yankees $40m/year

I don't agree. Where has been all this excess press? He's a good young player with a lot of potential and I am glad the Yankees did not trade him (yet).

There is an infielder who is doing quite well, 3B, I believe, but I cannot recall his name (is it Basak?). I do recall thinking this spring how I might welcome this guy taking over for A-Rod, as much as you guys are gonna flame me for saying this, but A-Rod's odd combination of inflated ego, "woe is me" handwringing, and mental failures in the clutch have my mind wandering to other possibilities now . . .

All I'm saying is that I've seen people talking about him being a big part of the team, when at this point he's a below average corner outfielder. When he reaches his prime he'll probably be an AVERAGE corner outfielder, which is a very good thing to be, don't get me wrong. It's not like people have dubbed him the second coming or anything but he's still nothing worth getting too excited about.

Yeah, he's very young yet. I would not call him a big part of the team now either. Though, he's the reason Bernie is sitting home right now, so they see something in him for sure.

What's the feeling on Phillip Hughes pitching in the bigs this year?

Midseason. I'm thinking August. I think Joe has guessed late June.

Probably depends on when Pavano goes on the DL If he goes down too early, it'll give Karstens a shot. If he goes down closer to the all-star break, they would probably give Hughes a shot.

Oh, and talking about Pavano, here's a story about him...

To be honest, they don't need to see anything in him at this point for Bernie to be sitting at home. That man, albeit one of my favorite all time players, is toast except against lefties and has no business taking up a roster spot on a team like the Yankees.

im a "trade Melky while his stock is relatively high" guy. i dont see him as being an everyday player, but rather a pretty good 4th OF.

many of my fellow Yankee fans dont agree *shrug*

All of this is conditional on whether old Rog' is coming to town this summer.

I keep expecting flames, but I say that in this stage of his career he is likely to be more of a disruption than a benefit to the team, joining it mid-season and perhaps excusing himself from long road trips. Assuming of course that the Yanks have 5 healthy, quality starters (*cough*).

I would not mind seeing Debbie Clemens in the ballpark again, though.

I would agree that his value right now is probably higher than he's actually worth in the long run. I think he'll be a viable outfielder... just not anything above average.

Guys, as others have done here shamelessly, I demand full credit for calling this if it does happen. The other day, Newsday's headline about Carl Pavano was: "From Doghouse to Penthouse?" They were talking about Pavano possibly being the Yankees' opening day pitcher due to injuries and rotation timing. See here for my uncanny prognostication:

I'd love to give you full credit, but you didn't say he'd be the opening day starter. He's not going to be the starter because he's the best pitcher the Yankees have. He's going to be the starter because he's the best HEALTHY pitcher they have that they wouldn't have to start on short or long rest (assuming Pettitte doesn't heal up in time). Mussina would start if timing was right, and of course Pettitte and Wang are higher on the pecking order than Pavano.

Sorry, but you didn't exactly call this one, at least not yet. We'll see at the end of the year if Pavano "blows everyone away". THEN, I'll give you credit
