Positive remarks from Sheffield. Prior to his stop in New York, I think Sheffield always found a way to say something negative about his previous stop. While I actually like Sheffield, I am surprised that he was so upbeat about the Yankees after the contract option situation, Bobby Abreu, and then being traded to the Tigers. Good for him. I'll definitely clap for him when he comes back to the Bronx.
He's happy to be away from New York, where he had worn out his welcome, and to play for Leyland again. Naturally, he will sound upbeat, for now. It will be interesting to see how long his good humor and postive attitude lasts as a Tiger.

White Sox, Blue Jays, Athletics, and Mets threads all thriving on this board and this one languishing, drifting toward page bottom? What's up with that?

Ask again in September. Team threads for the Blue Jays, Cubs and others have to be active this early, while they're still in playoff contention.

What do you make of Karstens? Does he make the team? I'd love to see the kid get a shot somewhere.

I think he is a good prospect, despite giving up some runs yesterday for the first time all spring. However, I don't think he's going to make the team as a starter, maybe in the bullpen perhaps if anything. Reason: spots 1-3 are reserved and spot 4 (or 5) is earmarked for Igawa who, after being recruited the way he way he was, would have to play himself off the team (which may happen, but only after the season starts). You can tell this by the indirect way Torre talks about him when asked in this manner. That leaves spot 5 (or 4); that goes to Pavano who the team wants desperately to fulfill at least part of his expensive contract and to save further embarassment. Either of those two guys will have to fall down hard (not difficult for Pavano, literally ) for Karstens to be in the starting rotation this spring.

He's definitely not ready. When he jumped up to AAA last year, his peripherals took a huge hit. Time will tell with him, but given the information available at this point, waiting out this year - unless he dominates AAA for the first half of the year - might be prudent.

dola-

Other than the obvious, the pitcher you should be getting excited about giving a chance in the Yankees system is Tyler Clippard. I would very much doubt that Karstens ever becomes anything better than a back end starter. Nothing wrong with that, really... cheap, homegrown back-end starters are a valuable commodity, but Clippard has more upside and is about the same level in the system that Karstens is at.

Yeah, I have heard great things about him, but not much lately. Karstens caught my eye when he was with the big league club last year.

I wouldn't put too much stock in Karstens' 3.80 ERA from last year. His K rate was pretty unacceptable... especially for a fly ball pitcher. The only reason his ERA was so good given his terrible peripherals was that he was extremely hit lucky as well as fly ball lucky WRT home runs.

You're looking at probably a mid-5's ERA if he's on the big club this year.

As someone who's watched him pitch for 4 years now, the fact Colter Bean can't get a real shot drives me friggin insane. He's dominating again this spring. And, of course, he won't make the team. And now I'll only get to see him if I do when Scranton's in town.

I guess it's those "middling" minor league numbers that have done him in.

The scouts must think he sucks. I really can't explain otherwise why he has 4 major league innings to his credit. It sure did take Bean a long time to get to AA.

I still wish the RS hadn't returned him in the Rule 5.
