What does "auto" mean in financial info?

In the financial info view, what does it mean when a player has "(auto.)" next to his years remaining? I had assumed that it meant that he would automatically be extended at the same salary for the next year, but it turned out that most of my "auto" players got big raises in arbitration somehow.

I did have two players with "(arbitr.)" in their info, and I planned on them getting their predicted raises, but when the "auto" guys also got arbitrated raises it took me by surprise. Some of the "auto" guys did not get arbitration, though.

Guys who are in their third year of service will still say auto, because it's not guaranteed they'll get to arbitration (i.e. if you send them down midway.)

Okay, so I should check each player individually. If I send a player down for a couple of days, is that enough to prevent arbitration?

I'm not sure how many days there are in the MLB 2010 schedule, so you might want to check, but players only need 172 days on the MLB roster to accumulate a year, so it would a couple of weeks to hold them off. Keep in mind sending them down takes an option away and it may mess with their morale.
