Opening discussion about the Bullpen...

I've spent a lot of time (1) trying to figure out the Bullpen, and (2) testing different ideas - all to pretty much no-avail. I most often I let the AI lay it out on the assumption that the AI coders know how the cards work better than I do.

One of the problems of trying to figure it out myself is I spend so much time trying to find some combo of ratings that makes sense for the Bullpen roles on such a small sample of previous results - after a while everything starts to "blur" and I still haven't concluded anything. I think the best approach is to assemble the layout based on logic rather than previous statistics.

I'm wondering if we'd be willing to share our thoughts on what we each do to lay out our bullpens with what kind of pitchers - for example - what kind of pitcher makes the best closer (I usually look for highest Stuff/Movement total, but I'm not convinced that's valid either).

For those of you that believe you've figured out the perfect solution - if you don't want to share the details, maybe you can at least tell us what NOT to do? lol

Anyway, I thought it might be a learning experience for all of us (not just me) if we shared some thoughts.

I usually pick a closer with high stuff, currently just installed Aroldis Chapman (stuff 177) and pair him with a defensive replacement catcher with high catcher ability (Cleveland backstops Perez and Hedges = 100 catcher ability). Then, I pick my worst starter to be long relief (with the setting 'avoid high leverage'). Everyone else is middle relief and let the AI pick and choose during the game. I don't really understand the different roles and truly think they are just for "realism" and make no difference. Usually a minimum of 7 bullpen arms unless you have time to micro and have depth to swap out gassed arms, then you can go with fewer. I think it is very helpful to have reserve depth to keep the bullpen fully rested. For tournaments with no rest days, I use 8 bullpen guys.

As far as Chapman goes or any high stuff guy set the slider to never pitch around.

Thanks Bailey for your comments. Either most of you guys have it figured out and want to keep it secret, or your just as confused as me lol. What Bailey described, however, is at least logical.

I'll usually make any MLB Live Ps I'm using in the bullpen "specialists", followed by middle relief, especially for lefties. They seem to perform a little better for me.

That said, I'm no expert. I just remembered this weekend, I could change park factors, which seem to be going poorly at the moment for my Tea Totallers (contact/gap) team. I'm thinking I don't have the defense to offset the xbh modifier being high, leading to my high eras (lots of flyball pitchers) and a poor home record (at least early this week).

I spend a lot on the bullpen. Only way to gain small edge over the endless Trammells, Garciaparras, Wilsons, etc (ie every mission reward that floods market).

Plenty of interesting 1 strategy relievers in the 80s. Find by seeing what opposition has bought. I want HIGH Control above all else unless Stuff is ridiculous.

My biggest bullpen problem is finding people to go in it. Righty flyballers, great. Anybody else.. forget it. Not that I have anything against righty flyballers, but a little balance would be nice.
