I haven't posted the year by year settings because of the formula I use. If you read my historical league thread which is stickied in this forum you will see what I mean.

I gave everyone a good 1901 setting to start and then discussed how I compare real life results to my sim results and make small adjustments to settings where necessary.

The problem is your players will likely develop at least a little differently than mine so settings that work well for me may not work as well for someone else. Does that make sense?

RED SOX FALTER, DROP 2 BACK OF SENATORS
As Ted Williams goes, so go the Boston Red Sox. A few weeks ago the Splendid Splinter was ripping the cover off the ball and the Red Sox caught and briefly past the Senators for top spot in the American League. However, this past week Williams went into a 3-for-23 slump that saw him drop behind Washington's Les Fleming in the batting race. Not coincidentally, the Red Sox dropped 5-of-6 during the week and now trail first place Washington by two games. Williams can not solely be blamed for the past week's performance as the Boston pitching staff was absymal - allowing an average of 6.3 runs in the 5 losses. Only Andy Karl (13-7, 2.80), who beat Philadelphia 5-3 for the only victory, can be happy with his week. Meanwhile OF Mel Almada is mirred in a 4-for-21 slump and many other Boston hitters have suddenly had their bats go cold.

The Senators did not have a stellar week, taking 2 from Boston before winning just 2 of 5 against Detroit, but it was enough to regain first place. Milo Candini (3-3), forced into the rotation with the injury to Red Barrett, split his two games with Detroit. Joe Haynes (10-11) and Tot Pressnell (9-6) each beat Boston but lost against the Tigers while Joe Beggs (15-7) was outstanding in his one start of the week, stopping Detroit 9-1 on a 4-hitter. At the plate, Buddy Lewis, Al Evans amd Hillis Layne all hit over .400 for the week.

Elsewhere, Cleveland won 4 of 6 to move within 4.5 games of top spot. The Indians have a crucial week ahead of them as they travel to Washington for a 4 game set before hosting Boston for 4 games over the weekend. The Yankees also edged closer and now sit 5 games off the pace. Max Lanier (10-5, 2.72) became the secon Yankee hurler in two weeks to win the player of the week. Lanier was 2-0 with a shutout and a 1.00 era this week. Last week Tiny Bonham (17-2, 2.10) was the top performer and Bonham got a 4-hit shutout in his only decision of this week.

PIRATES STRETCH LEAD AFTER 6-1 WEEK
The Pittsburgh Pirates are doing their best to try and end the National League pennant race early. The Pirates reeled off 7 straight wins before losing 3-2 to the Cubs yesterday. That streak allowed Pittsburgh to build a 7.5 game lead on the second place Brooklyn Dodgers. Pittsburgh now boasts 3 10-game winning pitchers in Cliff Melton (18-6, 2.53), Ken Heintzelman (10-9, 3.54) and Preacher Roe (10-7, 3.41) but the real key to the Pirates this season has been the league's most potent offense. Infielders Tony Cuccinello (.303,11,60), Arky Vaughan (.332,3,41) and Bob Elliott (.283,5,52) along with outfielders Bill Norman (.305,1,41), Fern Bell (.297,4,49) and Ralph Kiner (.294,3,27) have all been quite consistant. Bill Salkeld (.277,1,5) and Tom Padden (.212,2,30) platoon behind the plate while Dick Siebert (.377,1,28) and George Archie (.250,0,23) do the same at first base.

Vern Olsen (11-11, 2.95) of the Cubs was named the National League player of the week. Olsen pitched a complete game 7-hit shutout against Philadelphia on Tuesday and then allowed just 6 hits in handing Pittsburgh their only loss of the week on Sunday. Olsen went the distance in that game - a 3-2 victory. Olsen was the National League pitcher of the year in 1942 when he went 25-11. Last year he was 26-7 and a major reason the Cubs won their 6th World Championship in franchise history.

The third place Cardinals will be without pitcher Harry Breechen (5-8, 3.05) for at least a month with a rotator cuff injury. He joins an already crowded disabled list for the Cardinals that includes pitcher Stan Ferens (5-1, 2.89) who is out for the year along with top catching prospect Andy Seminick. Pitchers Early Wynn and Mort Cooper are both eligible to come off the DL next month.

FLURRY OF DEALS AS TRADE DEADLINE APPROACHES
With one more day left before the trade deadline a number of teams got to work early as 8 deals were made last week. The Yankees and Cardinals were the only contenders who made any moves. New York added reliever Max Macon (0-2, 6.75) and minor league pitcher Charlie Sproull from the Cards in exchange for backup outfielder Cully Rickard, who was hitting .310 in 145 at bats. Rickard will replace the slumping Don Padgett in rightfield for the Cardinals. St. Louis also dealt rookie catcher Joe Garagiola to the Phillies for 2B George Scharein (.277,4,13). Scharein will replace Jimmy Brown (.227,1,25) at second for the Cards.

Other moves saw the Giants acquire former 20-game winner Ross Bauers (5-9, 5.28) from the Phillies and outfielder Vince Dimaggio (.237,5,24) from the Braves; the A's added pitcher Bill Voiselle (11-9, 3.28) from Giants thru the White Sox , the Phillies picked up outfielder Bobby Estalella (.338,4,47) from the Giants, and the White Sox added pitcher Ed Lopat (11-10, 3.57) from the A's.

TSN BASEBALL FLASHBACK - 1930 WORLD SERIES HERO CHICK HAFEY
Chick Hafey played 45 World Series games and batted .370 in his postseason career but he was never better than he played for 7 games in the 1930 World Series. 1930 was a dominant year for Hafey's Cardinals as they set the single season NL record for victories with 104. The Cards were the best team in the National League for a decade, winning 6 pennants in 10 year starting in 1927, which coincidentally was Hafey's rookie season.

Hafey led the National League in homers with 23 and rbi's with 142 in 1930 but lost the MVP to teammate Rogers Hornsby (.377,19,120). Other Cardinal standouts included Jim Bottomley (.309,10,87), Specs Torporcer (.344,10,99), Austin McHenry (.335,10,69) and rookie of the year George Watkins (.372,17,105) . The rotation had 3 20-game winners in Flint Rhem, Al Grabowski and Watty Clark. I would be remiss in ignoring the fact that they also had Cliff Markle who was 5-3 before being sidelined for the season with an injury in June.

The Cards opponent in 1930 would be the New York Yankees who needed a win on the final day of the season to hold off Philadelphia. The Yanks, who were making their first postseason appearance since 1905, did not have the greatest pitching staff but did have loads of power. New York's offense revolved around MVP Hack Wilson (.315,45,150), a declining Babe Ruth (.318,27,104) and Lou Gehrig (.307,24,102) who missed 30 games with injuries. The pitching staff did have pitcher of the year Carl Weilman (27-6) who at age 40 enjoyed the greatest season of his career. Ted Wingfield (21-15) and Leo Mangum (16-15) were the other main starters.

The series itself was a terrific 7 game affair.

Game 1- Lou Gehrig tied the game with an 8th inning homer and in the top of the 10th Bill Dickey drove in 2 runs to make it 8-6 Yankees. Hafey had 2 hits including an rbi single in the bottom of the 10th but he was stranded there and Yankees drew first blood with an 8-7 win.

GAME 2 - Hafey hit a 3-run homer in the second as the Cards opened up a 7-0 lead. Lou Gehrig had 3 doubles and he, Hack Wilson and Babe Ruth each drove in 2 runs as the Yanks tried to rally but fell short losing 11-9. Hafey finished the game with 3 hits and 4 rbi's.

GAME 3 - George Pipgras limited the Cards to 4 hits and Hack Wilson homered to lead New York to a 4-0 win as the series moved to Yankee Stadium.

GAME 4 - A 14-4 blowout for St Louis. Hafey had 4 hits including his second homer of the series and drove in 4 more runs bringing his series total to 9.

GAME 5 - Hack Wilson hits two homers including a 2-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to give New York a 9-7 victory, Hafey hit his third homer of the series and drove in 2 runs, one of which tied the game at 7 in the top of the ninth.

GAME 6 - Rogers Hornsby has 4 hits as the Cardinals force a 7th game with a convincing 10-4 win. Hafey went 2-for-4 but did not drive in a run.

GAME 7 - Hafey hits two solo homers and scores 3 runs as the Cardinals win big 13-7 to claim the World Series title. Hafey ended up hitting .485 with 5 homers and 13 rbi's. Both the home run and rbi totals are World Series records although Lou Gehrig would later equal the home run mark in the 1938 series. Hafey also set a record with 32 total bases in the series and is the alltime World Series career leader in triples (6), homers (10) rbi's (41) and total bases (124).

NFL SEASON PREVIEW - Part 4 of 4
Here is the final chapter of our four part NFL preview. This week we turn our attention to the west divisions in both the NFC and AFC.

AFC West
OAKLAND RAIDERS - The key to stopping the Raiders is stopping league MVP Johnny Cushing. Easier said than done. Cushing ran for 1841 yards, second only to Todd Berger of New Orleans and scored 21 touchdowns for the silver and black. The o-line is solid but quarterback is a weak spot. Tony Hall and Joe Bray split the job last year but neither looked especially effective so the Raiders brought in fomer Notre Dame signal caller Antwan Baker. Baker has been with the Texans the past 5 years but as Vaughan Diedrick's backup never took a snap in a regular season game. If he has a good camp expect Baker to earn the starting nod. Tight end Walter Van Galder is the best receiver on the club. Defensively the Raiders are solid.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS - Coach Larry Berry led the Chargers to a 9-7 record but they missed the playoffs for the third straight season so you can expect Coach Berry's job to be on the line. The Chargers strength is the defense which placed 4 players on the allstar team. LB Sam Joe was a first team allstar for the 4th time in his career, while linemen Reggie White and Mike Claridge along with CB Adrian Cerqua made the second team. Offensively Josh Miller ran for 1333 yards without putting the ball on the ground. The QB situation is weak with longtime backup Leon Jones as the best option. First round pick Marquise Woodson from Ohio State gives the Chargers a big play receiver.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - The Chiefs have never made the playoffs but they hope that Ulish Groce will change that. The undrafted QB struck it rich after 3 years making the league minimum and signed a huge deal with the Chiefs. He started every game last season and looks like a star in the making. However, the Chiefs also drafted a QB with the 12th overall pick. They felt that Tulsa's Tommy Thompson was too good to pass up. The Chiefs do have some good young talent such as WR Pettis Neumann (taken 4th overall in 1944) and DE John Beasley (selected 3rd overall last year) but they still have a long way to go if they are to contend for a league championship.

DENVER BRONCOS - The Broncos missed the playoffs for the first time in 3 years and it cost coach Reggie Elstrom his job, although he did resurface in Indianapolis. The replacement is none other than Ryan McDonnell, the man who led the Bears to the Championship game. McDonnell favours a smash mouth style with the emphasis on defense, something that was totally foreign to the high-flying Bears. In Denver the Broncos have no choice but to grind it out as they lack the skill at quarterback and receiver to do much else. RB Oscar Hartings rushed for 1794 yards a year ago but he has to cut down on the fumbles. The defense was weak last year but should instantly be better with the addition of McDonnell and first round draft pick LB Rock Roberts from Purdue.

NFC West

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - The 49ers won the division for the 4th time in 5 years but will face a stiff challenge from Arizona once again. The 49ers strength is it's defense led by allstars SS Earl Joyce, LB Ben Kinard and DT Ray Steele. Add to the mix first round pick Bill *Willis, a defensive tackle drafted 23rd overall out of Ohio State. If QB Koy Harris can minimize his mistakes and not turn the ball over this defense is strong enough to take care of the rest.

ARIZONA CARDINALS - The Cardinals missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record a year ago after making the title game the previous season. Like the 49ers, Arizona relies on it's defense to win games. Keep an eye on Trent Fenney in the preseason. The ex-Maryland Terrapins QB was selected 19th overall and will be the Cardinals QB of the future.

ST LOUIS RAMS - The Rams have some talent at the offensive skill positions but lack the wide bodies on the line to give QB Rod Dugas time to create. FB Rod O' Sullivan and WR Clarence Mulitalo made the allstar team and RB Steve France had his 5th straight 1000 yard rushing season. This might be the year Mike Largent replaces France as the go-to back. Largent was drafted in the second round of the 1944 draft out of Wisconsin. Wide receiver Richard *Duden Jr. was drafted out of Navy in the second round and should contribute. First round pick Jim Henderson was a star at Colorado and he will join a defense that has a lot of talent but did not play like it a year ago.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS - Looks like another long year for the Seahawks who have yet to play a postseason game. There are very few bright spots aside from first round draft pick Marion *Motley out of Nevada and Markus Collingsworth, a WR from Oklahoma taken in the second round. FS Mike Faulk and G Bruce Majkowski both made the allstar team.

ARMY BACKS ARE HEISMAN TROPHY FAVOURITES
College football fans take pride every season in debating who warrents the Heisman Trophy and this year should provide plenty of debate as there appear to be several deserving candidates. Certainly it is far too early to pick a winner since not a down of football has been played yet but defending champ Doc Blanchard of Army has to be a favourite to become the first two-time winner. However, Blanchard's teammate Glenn Davis, who finished second a year ago may also prove to be a top candidate. Davis, Mr. Outside to Blanchard's Mr. Inside, is one of the most dangerous half backs in the game.

Others to watch include Quarterbacks Arnie Tuckr of Army, Otto Graham from Northwestern, Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame, Charles Trippi of Georgia and running backs Herman Wedermeyer from St. Mary's and Oklahoma State's Bob Fenimore. Wideouts to keep an eye on include Hubert Bechtol of Texas, Cincinnati's Elbie Nichol and Hugh Taylor from Oklahoma. Rarely does a defensive player get much consideration but if any do this year it will likely be either Michigan lineman Len Ford or linebacker Burr Baldwin from UCLA.

BAA FIRMS UP MEMBERSHIP, ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE
The Basketball Association of America is officially a go for this season after the new pro loop announced it will begin play in November with 11 teams. League executive had hoped to have 13 teams for the inagural season however bids to get franchises in Buffalo and Indianopolis off the ground failed.

The league will be alligned in two division and each club will play a total of 60 games. The league unveiled it's schedule which will begin in Toronto on Friday, November 3rd when the Huskies entertain the Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens.

The playoff format will be as follows: The first place team in each division will play a best of seven series with the winner advancing to the championship game. The second place teams in each division will play a best of 3 series as will the third place teams from each division. The two winners will then square off in a best of 3 with the winner of that series playing in the best of seven final.

The division and teams are as follows:

East Division
Boston Celtics
New York Knickerbockers
Philadelphia Warriors
Providence Steamers
Toronto Huskies
Washington Capitols

West Division
Chicago Stags
Cleveland Rebels
Detroit Falcons
Pittsburgh Ironmen
St Louis Bombers

Other rules announced by the league include having four 12-minute quarters for game play and a salary limit to $55,000 per club. The 48 minute game stirred some debate as several owners felt it was quite a departure from the 40 minute games favoured by the college ranks. Each team will be allowed to dress up to 12 players and must not dress less than 9. Toronto has been given a special exemption to add two Canadian born players to its roster limit in order to increase interest in the sport.

U.S. OPEN SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
The U.S. Open returns to the sporting scene for the first time since Craig Wood won in 1941. This years event will be held at the Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the second time Canterbury has hosted the Open. The first time was 1940 when Lawson Little needed a playoff to top Gene Sarazen. Opened in 1922, Canterbury is considered among the finest courses in the country. The course is a par 72.

I'm awfully surprised at how many repeat winners there are. Not even half the league has ever won a World Series. That kind of dominance by the upper echelon teams could loom large, as they won't have the resources to keep it up for the next 30 years. Quite remarkable.

TRIBE ON WARPATH - TAKE 6 OF 7 FROM LEADERS
The Cleveland Indians made Washington and Boston take notice of them last week in a very big way. The Tribe swept a 4-game set from the Senators in the nation's capitol before taking two of three from Boston at Cleveland Stadium. As a result the American League Pennant race, which was beginning to look very much like a 2-horse race, has been thrown wide open. Cleveland trails both Boston and Washington by just a half game while the surging Yankees, winners of 7 of their last 10, sit just 2.5 games off the pace.

On Monday the Indians blasted the Sens 11-6 behind 4 hits from Ival Goodman and 4 Washington errors. Tuesday Lou Boudreau's 2-rbi double was the difference in a 6-5 Tribe win. On Wednesday the Sens played their best game of the series but still lost 3-1 as Claude Passeau (7-10, 2.92) outduelled Joe Haynes (10-12, 2.34). The series ended the way it started with Cleveland winning 11-6 Thursday and the Sens committing a multitude of errors. Washington got more bad news Thursday when allstar infielder Buddy Lewis hurt his shoulder and will miss 2 weeks.

The Tribe's ride was momentarily derailed on Friday when Andy Karl (15-7, 2.67) and Kirby Higbee combined on a 1-hitter as Boston blanked Cleveland 5-0. The only hit off of Karl was a 3rd inning double from losing pitcher Steve Gromek (16-10, 2.91). Oscar Grimes and Mickey Rocco each had 3-rbi's as the Tribe won 10-3 on Saturday and followed that up with a 3-2 win yesterday. The series concludes today.

Ted Williams made up for a terrible performance two weeks ago by hitting .611 with 5 rbi's in 6 games this past week. That performance earned Williams the player of the week award and has vaulted him into first place in all 3 Triple Crown categories. Williams also learned earlier in the week that he was the American League batter of the month after hitting .349 with 27 rbi's in July. Another Boston standout, pitcher Andy Karl, was named pitcher of the month. Karl won all 7 of his starts in July and posted a 2.35 era in the process.

PIRATES EXTEND LEAD IN NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pittsburgh took 3 of 4 games from Brooklyn over the weekend and that allowed the league leading Pirates to extend their lead over the second place Dodgers to 9.5 games. The Pirates shut out the Dodgers twice in the series including 3-0 in the opener when Cliff Melton tossed a complete game 4-hitter to run his record to 19-6. For the 34 year old Melton it was the 45th shutout of his career tying him for 18th alltime in that category. The leader, Noodles Hahn, is well out of reach with 105 career shutouts.

Del Ennis of the Phillies was named National League player of the week. He hit .480 with 8 rbi's. Earlier in the week Ennis' Philadelphia teammate Joe Hatten was named NL pitcher of the month. Last month Hatten was 5-1 with a 1.67 era. Pittsburgh 2B Tony Cuccinello was named NL player of the month after hitting .346 with 4 homers and 23 rbi's in July.

NFL PRESEASON KICKS OFF
The NFL preseason schedule opened with a full slate of games but at least one club is wishing they did not play on the weekend. The Cincinnati Bengals lost 31-20 against Tampa but the bigger loss for Bengals fans was the news that QB Bud Rutledge hurt his ankle in the game and will miss at least the first week of the regular season and maybe more. Rutledge took just a couple of snaps in the game but on his final snap one of his lineman fell back into Rutledge's leg and caused the damage. Instead of the 2 time first team all star behind center to open the season it will likely be Ken Smith a 3rd year man from Michigan with 9 NFL passes to his credit. Smith did not look too bad in the game, completing 5 of 9 passes for 77 yards and 1 touchdown.

Kansas City also suffered a QB injury in the Chiefs 24-7 loss at St Louis. QB Tommy *Thompson, the 12th pick in this year's draft suffered a dislocated elbow on his throwing arm and will be sidelined for at least 10 weeks. The Chiefs were not going use Thompson as their starter since they have Ulish Groce but he will miss valuable development time. St Louis back Steve France rushed for 104 yards in the game.

Another team hit by injuries in the opening exhibition game was the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers will be missing a couple of starters for at least the first 5 weeks of the regular season. Both SS Joe Germaine and T Chas Studwell were injured on Saturday. Studwell has a broken foot while Germaine suffered nerve damage to his ankle in the 49ers 24-3 loss to Jacksonville.

In other action:

Backup RB Dennis Barber gained 141 yards on 10 carries but it wasn't enough as a late field goal gave Minnesota a 24-21 win over Barber's Oakland Raiders. Veteran backup Stephen Pagel looked good at QB for the Vikings.

The Giants spoiled Ryan McDonnell's coaching debut in Denver as New York won 13-7. McDonnell's defense looked very good but he made need some time to adjust to the fact he no longer has Sid Luckman and the Bears aerial assault offense to work with.

Mark Roehl rushed for 118 yards as New England blanked Green Bay 14-0.

1944 first round pick Doug Kooistra threw 4 touchdown passes in 2 quaters worth of work as Seattle blasted the Jets 45-16. Marion *Motley gained 16 yards on 6 carries in his pro debut with the Seahawks.

Sammy *Baugh played the first quarter and completed 7 out of 10 passes to help Washington past Indianapolis 44-24. 2nd overall pick WR Dante *Lavelli had 2 receptions including one for a touchdown for the Skins.

Veteran QB Leon Allen completed 18 of 21 passes as Buffalo beat Dallas 27-15.

Strong safety Jay Franklin was outstanding asTennessee doubled Arizona 20-10.

Former first round pick Jimmy Berton rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown as Philadelphia dropped Miami 30-13.

Rookie Jim *Hardy and third year man Arnie *Herber both looked good at QB as Atlanta thumped San Diego 32-9.

A 52 yard Mike McNeil to Harlon Ross touchdown pass helped Pittsburgh past New Orleans 19-10.

The defending NFC champion Bears had a huge offensive day, including 203 yards passing and 2 touchdown passes in one quarter's work from Sid Luckman but the defense could not hold Cleveland in check as the Browns beat Chicago 34-27. 2nd year backup QB Jeff McDonald threw two 4th quarter td passes to give Cleveland the win.

A 36 yard field goal late in the 4th quarter gave Carolina a 16-13 win over Houston. Second year QB John Holmes completed 13-of-14 passes for the Panthers to help set up the winning score.

BRADSHAW WINS U.S. OPEN
Irishman Harry Bradshaw was the class of the 1946 US Open, scoring in the 60's in all four rounds en route to a 16 under par 272 and a 4 stroke victory. Michigan native Chick Harbert and South African Bobby Locke tied for second. For the 33 year old Bradshaw it is his first major title and makes up for a terrible collapse Saturday and Sunday at last month's British Open.

On Thursday, Bob Hamilton has a 2 stroke lead after a 6 under par 66. Charlie Ward is alone in second at 68 while Bradshaw is in a group of 8, including Gene Sarazen 3 off the pace. Sarazan, the only man to win all 4 major tournaments but without a major win since 1935, looked surprisingly strong the first two days. On Friday, day 1 leader Hamilton shot a 73 to fall 3 strokes off the pace. Chandler Harper follows up an opening day 69 with a 67 to take a 1 stroke lead on Harbert and Bradshaw. Among those missing the cut are Masters winner Ben Hogan.

On Saturday Bradshaw strung together a third sub-70 round and his 5-under 67 left him 12 under for the tourney. Lloyd Mangrum was 2 strokes back while Harper shot a 71 to fall 3 off the pace in a tie with Locke and Harbert. A 68 on Sunday was more than good enough to give Bradshaw the title.

Here is the final leaderboard

1-Harry Bradshaw 272 -16
2-Chick Harbert 276 -12
2- Bobby Locke 276 -12
4-Chandler Harper 279 -9
5-Lloyd Mangrum 280 -8
5- Herman Keiser 280 -8
7-Jimmy Demaret 281 -7
7-Johnny Bulla 281 -7
9-Gene Sarazen 282 -6
9- Charlie Ward 282 -6

BASEBALL FLASHBACK - THE PERFECT GAMES
There have been 39 no-hitters tossed in the 46 seasons since the turn of the century including one from Tom Baker of the Browns earlier this season. However, on just 3 occassions has a pitcher been perfect and we haven't seen a perfect game in almost 18 years.

Chief Yellowhorse was perfect for the Cleveland Indians on August 30th, 1928. Yellowhorse had a long career, going 212-179 over 19 seasons with the White Sox, A's, Yankees, Indians and Giants. 1928 was his best season when he went 22-14 and made the allstar team, one of 3 times he was an allstar.

Prior to Yellowhorse, Harry Krausse was perfect on July 19th, 1910 for the Philadelphia A's. Just 22 years old and in his second pro season, Krausse would spend 7 more years with the A's before moving to the Cubs. He would also play briefly for the Cardinals, Braves and Indians. In 1916 he was 21-9 and made the allstar team for the second of 3 times in his career.

The first pitcher to hurl a perfect game is also considered one of the best to ever play the game. Orval Overall was perfect for the Boston Braves on July 1, 1909. He had thrown a no-hitter just 4 years earlier making him one of just 3 players to throw two no-hitters in their career (John Skopec and Charlie Rhodes are the other two). With 321 career wins Overall ranks 15th alltime in that category and he is 9th with 2999 strikeouts in his career. He was NL rookie of the year in 1905 when he went 24-14 for the Braves. He would also win pitcher of the year awards in 1913 and 1916 when he was 29-8 in each of those seasons. An 8-time allstar, Overall would make the postseason just once in his career, 1906 when he was 1-1 as the Braves beat the A's. At age 37 he was dealt to Cleveland where he finished his career as an Indian.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO?
Keeping with our Cleveland Indians theme (the Tribe on a real roll this week and all 3 perfect game pitchers having spent some time with the Indians) we thought it would be a good idea to focus our new weekly whatever happened to feature on Bob Feller - the can't miss prospect who seems to have missed badly.

Feller began his HOB career in 1939 as a 21-year old. He was 9-15 with with a 5.73 era for a bad Cleveland team that won just 69 games. He seemed to have some real potential but it was not polished yet so as the Tribe improved over the next couple of seasons he spend most of his time in the pen, going 2-5 in 1940 and 5-5 in 1941. In 1941 he earned a World Series ring as the Indians won it all for the first time in franchise history. In 1942 he was 3-6 before getting demoted to AAA where he was dominating in 4 starts, going 2-1 with a 1.16 era. However, in that fourth start he hurt his arm and was done for the year. In 1945, he made one start at AAA before blowing out his shoulder and ending his season. This year he missed a month with elbow problems but since than has gone 9-7 in AAA with 121 strikeouts in 161 innings work so he may get the call back to the bigs for the first since 1943. However, at the age of 27 it is highly unlikely he will ever develop to the point that his totals here can rival his real life accomplishments.

RED SOX REEL OFF SIX STRAIGHT WINS
The American League Pennant race is heating up but unlike the National League no clear cut favourite has emerged. Last week everyone was talking about the Cleveland Indians after the Tribe took 6 of 7 games from Boston and Washington to pull within a half game of the co-leaders. This week Cleveland ran into some problems and so did Washington, but the Boston Red Sox on the other hand were perfect - winning six straight games to open a 3.5 game lead on both Washington and Cleveland.

Tex Hughson was the American League player of the week after going 2-0 with a 1.59 era in two starts for the Red Sox.. Hughson's best effort of the season came Friday when he blanked the Yankees 2-0 on a 5-hit shutout. Andy Karl also won both of his starts during the week including a 4-2 complete game win over the Senators yesterday.

REDS MAKING A RUN IN NATIONAL LEAGUE
The Cincinnati Reds are trying to create a pennant race in the National League. The Reds leapfrogged both St Louis and Brooklyn and have moved into second place but still trail the front-running Pittsburgh Pirates by 7.5 games. The Reds lead the majors in homers thanks to a lineup that includes Joe Dimaggio (.219,18,65), Johnny Mize (.240,13,65), Joe Medwick (.301,8,41) and Frankie Hayes (.227,8,46). However, the pitching staff which includes Arnold Carter (13-10, 3.12), Johnny Hutchings (11-6, 2.99), Howie Fox (14-9,4.90) and Ewell Blackwell (7-11, 3.62) pales in comparison to the Bucs rotation.

The ace of the Pirates staff is Cliff Melton who became the majors first 20 game winner this season with a 5-hit complete game shutout of Boston on Saturday. Melton is now 20-7 on the season but has dropped 5 of his lasy 9 decisions.

Murry Dickson of the Cardinals was named NL player of the week. Dickson was 2-0 with a 1.50 era and tossed a shutout in one of his two starts last week......Mel Ott of the Giants moved into a 4th place tie on the alltime rbi list with Rogers Hornsby last week. Ott drove in a run in the Giants 6-3 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday. The rbi gives him 1706 for his career. Next on the list for Ott is former Cardinal Chick Hafey who drove in 1719 runs in his career. Lou Gehrig with 2108 and Jimmie Foxx with 1980 rank 1-2 in the all-time rbi list.

NFL PRESEASON WEEK 2
LAST SECOND TOUCHDOWN LIFTS BEARS PAST 49ERS
Zek Duval and Micah Strickland are hardly household names in the NFL but they hooked up on a last second 6 yard touchdown pass that enabled the Chicago Bears to beat San Francisco 27-26. It is preseason football, however, and you likely will not hear much from either of them in the future but for one moment they were heroes. Duval had two catches in the game for a total of 7 yards. The fourth year pro from Oklahoma State was a second round pick in 1943 and he started 15 games and made 54 catches as a rookie. The next season he was the number 4 receiver and caught just 19 balls and he spent all of last year on the inactive roster. Strickland, is the Bears 4th string QB right now and is 10-for-24 with the one touchdown and two interceptions through two preseason games. Undrafted out of Northwestern he made the Titans and saw action in a couple of games in 1943. He threw 15 passes for Tennessee the following season before being released. He signed with the Bears last year and spent the entire season on the bench as the number 3 QB.

Strickland looked very good in the winning drive but let's face it, he will never replace Sid *Luckman as the Bears signal caller. Luckman played the first half and although he looked a little rusty, completing just 10 of 26 passes he did throw a pair of touchdown strikes, both to second year WR Matt Sikahema. The Bears even their record at 1-1 while the Niners drop to 0-2. After losing two starters to injury a week ago San Francisco was just happy to get out of the game unscathed.

CUSHING UP TO OLD TRICKS
Reigning league MVP Johnny Cushing picked up right where he left off last season. The Oakland Raider halfback, seeing his first meaningful amount of playing time this preseason, ran for 100 yards and a touchdown as the Raiders trimmed Cleveland 34-31.

Elsewhere:
Reserve safety Jay Franklin had two interceptions to help Tennessee upend defending league champion Baltimore 27-13. MarTay Davis, fighting for the starting TE job on the Ravens, had a strong game catching 4 balls for 108 yards.

Former Michigan Wolverine running back Theo Thelwell rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown as San Diego beat Buffalo 32-17.

Houston scored 10 points in the final 3 minutes and added an overtime touchdown to beat Denver 40-34. Backup QB E.G. Atoe, a former Mississippi standout, was the hero in the Texans rally. 3rd round pick Andy Pinnock had 2 interceptions for Houston including one in overtime that set up the winning score.

Starting HB Harley Mitchell ran for two first half scores and backup WR Pepper Friedman caught two long passes for touchdowns in the second half as Philadelphia beat Jacksonville 28-14.

Veteran CB Mac Wiley returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown as Cincinnati built up a big league while the starters were on the field than hung on to beat New England 38-30.

Sammy *Baugh and Wayne *Miller connected on a first quarter touchdown pass as Washington beat Detroit 24-10. First overall pick Lou *Groza had a solid day but the rest of his offensive line mates did a terrible job protecting QB Bob *Waterfield. Waterfield completed 8 of 16 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown but was sacked 3 times and pressured on nearly every throw.

QB Paul *Christman threw a pair of touchdown passes as Tampa hammered Arizona 31-6.

Rookie Marion *Motley gained 88 yards rushing but it wasn't enough as Motley and the Seattle Seahawks lost 21-20 to New Orleans. Saints starting QB Ryan Boyette looked sharp completing 7 of 10 throws and tossing a touchdown pass in his quarter of work.

Nick Moore had 4 catches including one for a 27 yard touchdown as Minnesota blanked Carolina 14-0. Backup linebacker Chester Jordan had a strong game for the Vikings, registering 2 sacks and 6 tackles.

2nd round pick Elmer *Angsman rushed for 56 yards and a pair of tocuhdowns to help Pittsburgh past Kansas City 21-16.

QB Eddie Walsh scampered for a 13 yard touchdown run midway through the 4th quarter to give Dallas a 27-20 win over the Falcons in Atlanta. Both starting QB's, Doug Shroeder of the Cowboys and rookie Jim Hardy of Atlanta looked very sharp. On the other hand, incumbant Falcons starter Arnie *Herber had a terrible outing completing just 3 out of 15 passes.

Back-up QB Kevin Schwantz completed 8 of 9 passes, throwing for 1 touchdown and rushing for another as St Louis dumped Miami 31-14.

Willie Lewis kicked 4 field goals as the Giants beat the Jets in the battle of New York 26-13.

First round pick Stephen Williams ran for 3 touchdowns as Indianapolis was all over Green Bay by a 35-14 count.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES TO BEGIN PLAY
While the NFL is still in preseason play and the colleges 4 weeks away from action football north of the border kicks off this week. As has usually been the case a large number of former American college players will fill the rosters of the 13 teams in the 3 Canadian Leagues. The 3 leagues are organized as follows:

Western Interprovincial Football Union
Calgary Stampeders
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Saskatchewan Roughriders

The western clubs will play an 8 game season with 4 games against each opponent in the league. The teams with the two best records will square off in a 2 game total point home and home series. The winner will represent the west in the Grey Cup which will be held in Toronto on November 26th.

Interprovincial Rugby Football Union
Toronto Argonauts
Montreal Alouettes
Ottawa Rough Riders
Hamilton Tigers

The eastern based clubs will each play 12 games with 4 games against each opponent. The top two teams will play a 1 game playoff at the home stadium of the team with the better record. In the event of a tie for first place the team with the better points ratio shall be deemed the host club. The winner of the playoff will face the champion of the Ontario Rugby Football Union in a 1 game playoff to determine the eastern representative in the Grey Cup.

Ontario Rugby Football Union
Toronto Balmy Beach
Toronto Indians
Hamilton Wildcats
Sarnia Imperials
Windsor Royals
Ottawa Trojans

Each club will play a 10 game schedule meeting everyone else in the league twice. The top two teams will play a 1 game playoff to determine the league champion.

IKE WILLIAMS TO DEFEND LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE SEPTEMBER 4TH
NBA lightwieght champion Ike Williams has agreed to defend his title in Cardiff, Wales next month. His opponent will be Welshman Ronnie James the British Lightweight Champion. James career record is 104-14 with 5 draws. Williams with a record of 75-9-4 is no stranger to fighting for the belt on his opponents home turf. He first claimed the NBA title last year with a second round TKO of champ Juan Zurita in Zurita's home country of Mexico. Williams also fought Los Angeles native Enrique Bolanos in Bolanos' hometown of Los Angeles in April. Williams won that bout with an 8th round knockout.

Williams is not considered the undisputed champion as the New York State Lightweight title holder is Bob Montgomery. Montgomery is recognized as the World Champion in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. He first claimed the title with a unanimous decision over Beau Jack at Madison Square Garden in 1943. Negotiations for a bout between the two to unify the title are ongoing but so far nothing has been decided. Montgomery is set to defend his New York Lightweight title against Wesley Mouzon in November. Assuming both Montgomery and Williams prevail in their bouts they will likely square off some time next year. The lightweight category is presently the only one without a unanimous champion. Here are the champs in each weight group and their next opponent.

HEAVYWEIGHT - Joe Louis - set to fight Tami Mauriello in New York on Sept 18th.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT - Gus Lesnovich - likely will fight top challenger Billy Fox early next year

MIDDLEWEIGHT - Tony Zale - to face Rocky Graziano in New York on Sept 27th

LIGHTWEIGHT - Ike Williams (NBA) - to face Ronnie James in Cardiff, Wales Sept 4th
- Bob Montgomery (NYSAC) - to face Wesley Mouzon in Philadelphia on Nov 26th

FEATHERWEIGHT - Willie Pep - undecided who he will face next

BANTAMWEIGHT - Manuel Ortiz - will face Harold Dade in San Francisco on Jan 6th

FLYWEIGHT - Jackie Patterson - nothing definate but expected to fight Dado Marino next year

REDS 9 GAME WINNING STREAK SNAPPED
Before losing 5-3 to Boston yesterday the Cincinnati Reds won 9 straight games and are beginning to close the gap on first place Pittsburgh. Just a couple of weeks ago it seemed the Pirates had the National League Pennant all but wrapped up, however the Reds streak coupled with a below-.500 performance from Pittsburgh over the last 14 days has allowed the Reds to move within 5.5 games of the front-runners. The big test will be the two week stetch between Aug 28 and Sept 7 when the Reds and Pirates meet 8 times.

What is amazing is the Reds streak has come while three of their best hitters are struggling. Joe Dimaggio is in a 2-for-19 slump while Frankie Hayes has hit just .111 over the past week and Johnny Mize batted .140 during the same stretch. However, other players have stepped up:

On Monday, Joe Medwick had 3 hits and 5 rbi's while Ford Garrison drove in 4 runs in a 10-7 win over the Cardinals that ran the streak to 4 games. On Tuesday Grady Hatton hit a 2-run pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 9th for a 5-3 win. Wednesday the Reds beat the Cards 5-4 as Pete Coscarart and pitcher Arnold Carter each drove in two runs in a 5-run 5th inning. Carter went the distance for the win to run his record to 14-10. Nick Etten's 3-run homer was the big blow Thursday as the Reds completed a 4-game sweep of St Louis with a 4-3 win. Friday Johnny Hutchings (13-6, 2.99) tossed a 4-hitter as he outduelled Warren Spahn (13-10, 3.49) and the Braves 2-1 and on Saturday Coscarart had 3 rbi's in a 7-3 win over the Braves. Medwick was named player of the week for the second time in a month. The Reds outfielder hit .524 for the week and had at least one hit in each of the 7 games he played in.

The Pirates were 4-3 this week including an 11-3 victory over the Giants yesterday that allowed them to become the first team this season to reach the 70 win mark. Arky Vaughan had a huge day for the Pirates on Sunday, driving in a career high 8 runs. Vaughan hit two homers in the game. The National League record for RBI's in a game is 10, most recently accomplished by the Reds Joe Dimaggio in 1941.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP
Boston has a 2 game lead on Cleveland with the Washington Senators 3.5 games off the pace as the American League Pennant carousel keeps on turning. The Yankees dropped to 8.5 games back so with about a month and a half to play it appears it will be a 3 team battle. This week will be a big one for the Senators who play both Cleveland and Boston in the next 7 days.

Browns pitcher Archie McKain tossed a pair of complete game victories to earn the American League player of the week award for the second time in his career. McKain blanked the White Sox 9-0 on 4 hits Monday and then threw a 6-hitter in a 14-3 win against the same pale hose club on Saturday.

The sophomore jinx continues for 1945 rookie of the year Dave Ferriss. After missing 8 weeks with elbow troubles, Ferriss tweaked his back last week and will miss at least a week. After winning 21 games for the Red Sox last year, Ferriss is just 6-6 this season.

BASEBALL FLASHBACK - TOP FIVE INDIVIDUAL SINGLE SEASON PERFORMANCES
There have been some great individual efforts through the first 45 years of baseball history but the five listed below stand out as the greatest single season performances by one athlete. Certainly arguements could be made for Rogers Hornsby's .401 batting average in 1931, Tris Speaker hitting .410 19 years earlier or the 32 win seasons enjoyed by Jesse Tannehill and Cy Young at the turn of the century. However, TSN feels they and all other performances pale in comparison to the five mentioned below.

5- JIMMIE FOXX 1937 - At the age of 29 the Philadelphia Athletics first baseman enjoyed the greatest season of his career. Foxx joined Babe Ruth as the only men to hit at least 60 homers in a season when he ripped 64 longballs and drove in 169 rbi's (also second only to Ruth). He also hit .346 that season and finished second to Detroit's Hank Greenberg in the batting race. Despite his Ruthian effort the A's finished 4th in the American League that season but Foxx was the unanimous choice for league MVP.

4- GEORGE UHLE 1938 - Uhle went 32-5 for the Chicago Cubs in 1938. Only Jesse Tannehill in 1904 and Cy Young in 1902, with 33 wins each, have won more games in a single season than Uhle. What is even more amazing is that Uhle was 39 years old at the time and coming off of a 17-21 season. The Cubs would win the World Series in '38 but Uhle, having hurt his shoulder in his final start, watched the entire series from the dugout.

3- TOM HUGHES 1911 - In 1911 Hughes became the first and so far only pitcher to strikeout 300 batters in a season when he fanned 11 in his final start of the season to finish with 301. He was 24-10 with a 1.92 era for the Pirates that season but did not win the pitcher of the year award. It instead went to Philadelphia's Christy Mathewson (22-7, 2.21, 218k's). Hughes did help the Pirates to a World Championship that season and was 1-1 with 10 strikeouts in 16 World Series innings. Hughes presently ranks 4th alltime in strikeouts with 3450, trailing Mathewson (3866), Noodles Hahn (3835) and Jim St. Vrain (3629).

2- JESSE BURKETT 1902 - One could easily argue Burkett's .443 average in 1902 was the greatest single season achievement of alltime. The St Louis outfielder won the NL batting title by a huge amount (.079 ahead of Willie Keeler) and set a record no one has ever come close to equaling. In fact, only on two other occassions has someone hit .400 in a season - Tris Speaker .410 in 1912 and Rogers Hornsby .401 in 1931.

1- BABE RUTH 1926 - The greatest season ever in our opinion. Ruth who had set a home run record with 57 roundtrippers three years earlier and the rbi mark with 135 in 1925 smashed both those marks in 1926 by blasting 70 homers and driving in 173 runs. He also hit .368 to win the American League triple crown. Ruth also set the single season mark for runs scored (155), on base percentage (.529), slugging percentage (.914) and finished 5 shy of his 1919 record for walks in a season. Ruth was given 155 free passes in 1926.

STEELERS AND GIANTS BASKING IN RARE SUCCESS
Yes, it is only preseason but do yourself a favour and don't say that to fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Two perennial sad-sacks of the NFL suddenly find themselves unbeaten after 3 preseason contests.

The Steelers needed a late touchdown run from QB Mike McNeil to beat the Falcons in Atlanta 27-24 while the Giants defense looked extremely strong in a 28-12 win over Carolina. Veteran DE JP O'Donnell had 2 of the Giants 7 sacks in the game.

Minnesota, Philadelphia and Tennessee also each sport perfect records after 3 preseason weeks. QB Stephen Pagel threw for 3 touchdowns as the Vikings outscored Jacksonville 44-29. The Eagles beat winless Denver 41-17 while the Titans knocked off another winless team, San Francisco by a 24-7 count.

In other action Mario Glen ran for 134 yards but it wasn't enough for the Patriots as New England lost 20-14 to Dallas.

Morgan Howard connected on a 55 yard field goal with 8 seconds left in regulation to lift Kansas City past Arizona 27-24.

Tood Berger ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns as New Orleans dropped Cleveland 31-14. Berger also had 4 catches for 38 yards.

Four Kevin Sherer field goals gave Indianapolis a 12-10 win over the Rams.

Sid Luckman threw for 200 yards and backup RB J.T. Abraham ran for 100 as Chicago improved to 2-1 with a 23-9 victory in Houston.

Green Bay beat Oakland 23-20 despite 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Raiders RB Johnny Cushing. Green Bay's Tony *Canadeo ran for 100 yards in the game.

Leon Jones threw 4 first half touchdown passes as San Diego improved to 2-1 with a 41-26 win at home against Tampa.

Seattle committed 7 turnovers and handed the Dolphins their first win of the preseason : 28-3 was the final score.

Second year DB Vernon Swayne had 2 interceptions while RB Stacey Jolley gained 122 yards for the Phins.

Dan Peete had 4 catches for 122 yards to help Buffalo past Washington 26-14. Sammy *Baugh played the first half for the Redskins and completed 24-of-30 passes for 265 yards but he could not get the Redskins into the endzone.

Cincinnati handed the Detroit Lions their 3rd straight loss. Ex-Ohio State receiver Bob *Shaw had 6 catches for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace the Bengals to a 29-27 win. The Lions got a decent game for QB Bob *Waterfield and the starting offensive unit but the backups let the game get away.

Steve *Van Buren ran for 80 yards as the Jets handed defending league champion Baltimore it's second straight loss. Walter Micho picked up a fumble deep in Ravens territory and ran it into the endzone for the deciding score in a 17-10 victory. The Ravens lost QB John Foster with an ankle injury in the second quarter but they expect he will be able to play in two weeks when the season starts.

With just one preseason game remaining a few roster spots are still up for grabs on most teams but the primary focus will be on keeping everyone healthy for the season opener in two weeks. Here is a list of key players who will likely miss the opening week of the season, if not more.

Cincinnati QB Bud Rutledge had been expected to miss at least the season opener after hurting his ankle in the first preseason game. Rutledge is making great progress in his recovery and will almost certainly be ready to go in two weeks so Bengals fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Back-up Ken Smith has shown some promise but he has been inconsistant in preseason play so far.

RYDER CUP CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED
Ben Hogan has been named captain of the American team for the 1947 Ryder Cup which will be held at the Portland Golf Club, site of this year's PGA championship. Englishman Henry Cotton will skipper the British side. It will be the first Cup challenge since the Americans upset the British on their home turf in 1937. In the five events prior to that the home side had won on each occassion. The first event was held in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1927 after a trophy was donated by Samuel Ryder. The United States leads the series 4 wins to two. It has also been agreed that the 1949 event will be held at the Ganton Golf Club in Ganton, England.

(Editor's Note - Title Bout Championship Boxing has been added to this replay. I was never much of a boxing fan but I reccomend it to even the casual fan as it is quite addictive once you get the hang of the interface and what you can do. There will be much more boxing coverage in the future issues of this report. I have simulated a large number of fights to get my own rankings and career records for my fighters. It will be a universe of its own just like OOTP in that it mirrors real life as to when the fighters debut but from there development will depend entirely on what happens in the TBCB ring. The premise is that now that WWII is over big time boxing can resume but an elimination tournament had to be held to determine the new titleholders in each of the 8 major weight categories. I will document the final bout in each of these categories over the next couple of weeks. I hope you find these fights entertaining.)

LAMOTTA STOPS HOLMAN WILLIAMS IN THRILLING MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE BOUT
A huge evening of boxing in Pittsburgh ended in a controversial decision as Jake Lamotta handed Holman Williams his first loss in 27 fights to claim the vacant Middleweight Title. It really was a fight that could have gone either way with Williams winning the early rounds only to see Lamotta come roaring back later in the 15 round bout. Entering the final round this reporter had the fight scored even, due to Lamotta losing a point in the 11th for using an open glove. Williams came out hard in the 15th after being beaten badly the previous round and he clearly won the 15th.

Neither fighter was close to be knocked down at any time in the bout and as they awaited the scorer's decision the crowd was abuzz and clearly undecided who should be crowned champion. The scoring could not have been much closer as both judges and the referee scored it 142-141in favour of Lamotta.

After the fight, Williams camp complaied that they had been robbed and demanded a rematch. Lamotta says he will give Williams his opportunity at some point but he was not sure when. It was Williams first loss in 27 fights although he has not faced too many big name fighters. Among the Pensacola, Flordia natives victims only the names of Charley Burley and Tony Zale standout. Lamotta, nicknamed the Bronx Bull, improves to 14-0 with 8 of his wins coming by way of knockout.

On the undercard of a night to seed the top middleweights, Sugar Ray Robinson (19-1-1) won a split decision over Artie Towne (14-3-1), Tony Zale (25-4) knocked out Carl Olson (23-8-2) in the 12th, and Charley Burley (14-3) floored Rocky Graziano (26-11-1) in the 13th.

Below are the top 10 ranked Middleweights
1- JAKE LAMOTTA (14-0) World Champion Bronx, New York
2- Holman Williams (26-1) Pensacola, Florida
3- Charley Burley (14-3) Bessmer, Pennsylvania

AN ALL-OHIO WORLD SERIES? IT'S A POSSIBILITY!
Not since 1911 when the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Athletics for the second straight season has a World Series been contested entirely in one state but if you ask just about anyone in Ohio they'll likely tell you that it may happen again this year. The Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds have certainly picked the right time to get on a roll as the baseball season prepares to enter its final month.

On the 9th of July the Cincinnati Reds were a game below .500 and confined to fourth place in the National League. A month and a half later these same Reds are 19 games over the break even mark and sit squarely in second place with their eyes on the top dog - the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds chipped another game off the Pirates lead this week and now sit 4.5 back of the leaders with 8 games between the two clubs in the next two weeks.

Ducky Medwick (.318,8,51) has been on a tear, winning NL player of the week honours twice in the last 4 weeks. Second baseman Alex Kampouris (.322,8,54) and outfielder Ford Garrison (.312,5,41) have been getting on base so that the big bats of Joe Dimaggio (.216,20,69) and Johnny Mize (.238,13,69) can drive them in. Neither the 33 year old Mize nor the 31 year old Dimaggio are the players they once were, but despite terrible batting averages both have been able to deliver the clutch hit. The rotation has also turned things around in the past couple of months, in particular Ewell Blackwell (8-11, 3.47) who is 3-0 with a 1.45 era in August and Johnny Hutchings (15-6, 2.97) who has won 6 of his last 7 starts.

The Indians have been just as impressive. On July 9 they were sitting at .500 but have gone 30-13 since and now lead Boston and Washington by 1 game in the American League. Pitching is the reason for the Tribe's turnaround. Ace Steve Gromek (20-10, 2.88) is 10-2 in his last 13 starts, Claude Passeau (11-12, 2.81) has won 6 of his last 8 starts and Allie Reynolds (13-11, 3.57) has righted himself after a 1-5 June.

BISCAN THROWS NO-HITTER FOR CHISOX
Frank Biscan gave fans of the last place Chicago White Sox something to cheer about last Wednesday when he no-hit the New York Yankees in a 1-0 White Sox win. Biscan, who got 2B Johnny Hodapp to pop out to end the game, struck out 6 and walked 4 in the victory. New York pitcher Max Lanier went the distance and fired a 7-hitter. Lanier's only mistakes came in the 7th inning when Eddie Lake hit a one-out rbi single to plate Johnny Rizzo with the game's only run.

Biscan got himself into a real jam in the 6th when he walked the bases loaded but he fanned Dusty Cooke to end the threat. It was only the second no-hitter in White Sox history and the first since John Skopec through the first no-hitter in American League history on September 23, 1902. Skopec would later throw a second no-hitter while with the Phillies in 1911. By the way, in his next start which was yesterday, Biscan gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings as the White Sox lost 7-5 in Cleveland. On the year Biscan is 9-6 with a 3.07 era. The 26 year old was acquired by the White Sox from the Browns for pitcher Frank Papish just over a year ago.

We nearly had a second no-hitter during the week. Two days after Biscan's performance Ken Holcombe (7-11, 4.29) of the Braves had a no-hitter broken up in the 7th inning at Brooklyn. Holcombe settled for a complete game 2-hit shutout as Boston won 1-0.

HEINTZELMAN AND ARNTZEN WIN PLAYER OF WEEK HONOURS
A pair of pitchers were named the top performers in the major leagues for last week. Ken Heintzelman of the first place Pittsburgh Pirates earned the National League nod after going 2-0 with a 1.00 era in 2 starts. Heintzelman (15-10, 3.18) beat the Giants 4-2 on Monday before shutting out the Cardinals 2-0 on Friday. It is just the second time in his 7 year career he has been named player of the week, although he does have two pitcher of the month awards and an NL pitcher of the year award to his credit.

Orie Arntzen of the White Sox is the American League's top performer. He had a pair of complete game victories including a 4-0 5 hit shutout of the A's on Monday. On the season, Arntzen is 11-11 with a 2.98 era for the last place White Sox. It is his first player of the week award.

BLOW TO CARDS AS DICKSON GONE FOR YEAR
Murry Dickson (10-15, 3.59) has tossed his last pitch of the season for the St. Louis Cardinals. Dickson (10-15, 4.59) was NL player of the week just 7 days ago. It marked the second time this season, his first full one in the majors, that Dickson was named player of the week. The Cardinals are hopeful the 30 year old will make a full recovery from his shoulder surgery and will be back in the rotation next year.

Pittsburgh got a scare over the weekend when allstar second baseman Tony Cuccinello (.306,14,74) suffered a concussion after getting hit in the head by a pitch from Philadelphia's Bill Swift on Saturday. The National League player of the month for July is considered day-to-day and will likely miss about a week. It couldn't come at a worse time for the Pirates who are suddenly in a pennant race with Cincinnati and begin a 4-game set with the Reds today. 26 year old backup infielder Frankie Gustine (.265,2,11) will replace Cuccinello at second for the Bucs.

BREAKING DOWN THE SHOWDOWN
The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates begin a 4 game set that could go a long ways towards deciding the National League Pennant. The two clubs play 4 times in the Steel City this week before meeting 4 more times next week in Cincinnati.

The Reds enter the series on a roll and with most of their key players on a hot streak. The Pirates, with the best offense in the league and the third most stingy pitching staff, have been in a mini-slump of late. The loss of offensive catalyst Tony Cuccinello could also play a factor. Here are the probable pitching match-ups for the 4 games.

Monday Arnold Carter (14-11, 3.09) for Cincinnati vs Jim Tobin (7-2, 3.19) of the Pirates
Tuesday Johnny Hutchings (15-6, 2.97) for the Reds vs Cliff Melton (22-8, 2.33) of the Pirates
Wednesday Howie Fox (16-10, 4.75) for the Reds against Ken Heintzelman (15-10, 3.18) of Pittsburgh
Thursday Ewell Blackwell (8-11, 3.47) for the Reds vs Preacher Roe (12-11, 3.42) of Pittsburgh

NELSON WINS PGA TITLE FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
Byron Nelson added a second PGA championship to go with the British Open title he won earlier this year. Nelson, who won the PGA match-play event a year ago and finished second the year before, stopped upset minded Dick Burton of England 2 and 1 on the final day of play.

Burton, the 1940 British Open champ had a terrific run, defeating Denny Shute, Sam Snead, Dutch Harrison, Charlie Ward and Skee Reigel to reach the final. Nelson defeated Cary Middlecoff, Jimmy Demaret, Jim Ferrier and US Open champ Harry Bradshaw to get to the championship. Nelson, the number 1 seed for the event, was the only one of the top four to make it to Saturday's semi-final. Second and third seeds Ben Hogan and Sam Snead both suffered losses in their opening match while fourth seed Bob Hamilton lost to Bradshaw in Thursday's second round.

44 year old Gene Sarazen had the crowds buzzing when he beat Lew Worsham in Tuesday's play in round and took Bob Hamilton to the final hole before falling short in Friday. Always a crowd favouite, the Harrison, New York native has not won a major since 1935 and has not challenged for one since losing a playoff to Lawson Little in the 1940 US Open.

This final major of the season completes my golf schedule for the year. Next year in addition to the 4 majors I will also cover the 1947 Ryder Cup.

1946 MAJORS WINNER and Runner Up
Masters at Augusta, Ga. Ben Hogan Herman Keiser and Lawson Little tie for second
British Open at St Andrews Byron Nelson beats Peter Thomson in a playoff
US Open at Cleveland Harry Bradshaw C. Harbert and Bobby Locke tie for second
PGA Championship at Portland Byron Nelson defeats Dick Burton in match play

NFL SEASON KICKS OFF ON THURSDAY
Sid *Luckman and the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears will open the NFL season this Thursday with a game against the St. Louis Rams. The game should be a high scoring affair as the Bears have the best offense in the league and the Rams have some real talent at the skill positions. Weekend match-ups include defending league champion Baltimore travelling to San Diego to face the Chargers while Oakland and reigning league MVP Johnny Cushman play host to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The preseason wrapped up this weekend with 3 teams sporting a perfect 4-0 record including the surprising New York Giants. The Giants upended the Bears 48-30 as both starting QB Eric Poppinga and backup Bill Sweeney threw a pair of touchdown passes. The Eagles also finished perfect by beating 0-4 Detroit 24-7. Philadelphia finished the preseason with the league's best offense led by a QB rating of 106.7 for starter Doug Bass. Minnesota was the third unbeaten team as the Vikings topped Miami 38-18 on Saturday.

In other action Bruce Jones rushed for 153 yards to power Kansas City past Dallas 37-15, Indianapolis handed Arizona it's fourth straight loss 27-6, Jason Johnson hit a 48 yard field goal in overtime to lift St Louis past the Oakland Raiders 31-28, Green Bay handed Tennessee it's first preseason loss 33-13, backup QB Bernie Burrow was 6-for-6 for 153 yards to lead Jacksonville past Cleveland 36-14, Gus Barton and Brad Johnson each ran for 2 touchdowns as Houston beat New England 43-34, San Francisco finally got in the win column with a 24-13 victory over the 1-3 Jets, John Foster threw 2 touchdown passes to pace Baltimore past Tampa Bay 17-7, New Orleans beat up on the Redskins 35-16, San Diego outkicked Carolina 15-6 as all points were scored from field goals, Denver beat Pittsburgh 37-14 to give the Broncos their first preseason win and the Steelers their first loss, Atlanta topped Seattle 20-6 despite a strong game from Seahawks rookie RB Marion *Motley, and the Bills improved to 3-1 with a 31-17 victory in Cincinnati.

CAN CUSHING CARRY RAIDERS TO TOP?
For Oakland Raiders All-World running back Johnny Cushing 1945 was the greatest season of his career personally but the final game left him with a sour taste in his mouth. Cushing's Raiders came up one point shy in their bid to reach the AFC title game and ultimately the NFL championship. The Raiders had homefield advantage and were favoured to beat the Baltimore Ravens but in the end Baltimore hung on for a 24-23 victory. Cushing ran for 86 yards on 17 carries but he coughed up a fumble in the second quarter that the Ravens turned into a touchdown. Cushing also made 7 catches for 63 yards including a 22 yard touchdown reception early in the 4th quarter but the play that gave him nightmares all off-season was the third and 10 pass he dropped near midfield with 21 seconds left in the game. The Raiders would fail to convert on 4th down in their bid to get into field goal position and the Ravens were able to run out the clock and with it the Raiders season.

Cushing certainly can't be blamed for the loss, but it was a dissappointing end to the greatest season in the career of arguably the best running back in the game. Cushing ran for a career high 1841 yards and won both the offensive player of the year award and the NFL MVP last season. He made his second career appearance on the first team AFC allstar squad (to go with 2 second team selections in his 5 year career). The 30 year old who graduated from the University of Florida in 1938 is the game's alltime rushing leader with 8304 yards. He has never missed a game in his 5 years in the league and is average over 114 yards rushing a game in his 5 career postseason contests.

All the individual accolades are well and good but what Cushing really pines for is a trip back to the championship game. The Raiders won the AFC title in 1943 but lost the league championhip 27-13 to Carolina. Cushing ran for 79 yards and had 5 catches for 43 yards but like last year's playoff game with Baltimore he committed a costly fumble that led to a Panthers touchdown. He can not explain how he averages a fumble a game in the playoffs but committed just 18 fumbles in 80 regular season contests.

Cushing looks like a sure-fire hall of famer but what he wants more than the phrase NFL rushing champion etched on his plaque are two little words - League Champion. Could this be the year Cushing's Raiders leave their mark on the NFL?

WHO IS THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL?
As the 1946 NFL season prepares to begin lets take a look at the top quarterbacks in the game. In no particular order the following 7 players are arguably the best in the NFL at their position. The first four are established veterans while the final three are players you should be reading about for years to come.

SID *LUCKMAN - Chicago Bears: 4 straight first team NFC allstar appearances and the highest single season QB rating in league history a year ago are the credentials Luckman brings to the table. His Bears are consistantly the best offensive team in the league and Luckman is without a doubt the leader of that offense. His 145 career touchdowns are number 1 all time.

SAMMY *BAUGH - Washington Redskins: Injuries have cost Baugh 13 games over the past 4 seasons but when he is healthy it is hard to find a better quarterback.

BUD RUTLEDGE - Cincinnati Bengals : A 2 time first team allstar, the 14 year veteran may be on the downside of his career but the Bengals are banking that he has at least one more great season in his powerful right arm.

JOHN FOSTER - Baltimore Ravens - The MVP of the championship game last year has never reached the outstanding potential he showed as a collegiate star at Oklahoma but that is mainly due to a series of injuries. If he can stay healthy for a full season he could be something else. Unfortunately, he is already nursing an ankle injury that may keep him out of the season opener.

ARNIE *HERBER - Atlanta Falcons - The third year pro is considered the best of the new breed of young quarterbacks in the game.Herber needs to cut down on his interceptions and if he does so he will be receiving plenty of accolades to go with the second team NFC allstar berth he earned a year ago.

ULISH GROCE - Kansas City Chiefs - One of the best stories in the league. Groce was undrafted as a rookie but because of a couple of injuries started every game as a rookie for the Chiefs. Last season, his third in the league, he had his best year as a pro. The Chiefs rewarded the former Auburn star with a 6 year deal and big things are expected from him.

BOB *WATERFIELD - Detroit Lions - Drafted 4th overall out of UCLA a year ago, Waterfield started 8 games as a rookie and when he wasn't under immense pressure from opposing defenses he looked pretty good. The Lions offensive line was pathetic a year ago but first round pick Lou Groza, a powerful offensive tackle from Ohio State immediately became Waterfield's best friend in the preseason. If he doesn't get destroyed by the defense Waterfield will be a star in this league.

CANADIAN FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
The Toronto Indians have improved to 2-0 and sit atop the Ontario Rugby Football Union Standings two weeks into the season. The hometown Indians blanked the visiting Ottawa Trojans 14-0. In other action, two first half touchdowns stood up as the Sarnia Imperials handed Windsor it's second straight loss, 14-13 was the score. A late field goal gave the Toronto Balmy Beach a 23-21 victory over the visiting Hamilton Wildcats.

There was one game in the Western Provincial League as Calgary blanked visiting Saskatchewan 3-0. The Roughriders fall to 0-2.

The Interprovincial league kicks off its season next Monday with a pair of Labour Day games. The Ottawa Rough Riders visit the Wildcats in Hamilton while the Montreal Alouettes travel to Toronto to take on the Argos.

IKE WILLIAMS WINS THE BATTLE OF UNBEATEN LIGHTWEIGHTS
Ike Williams is the new Lightweight Boxing Champion of the World after a 15th round TKO of Enrique Bolanos at the Las Vegas Hilton. The victory boosts Williams perfect record to 17-0, including 15 by knockout. For Mexican native Bolanos it was his first loss after 14 victories.

Williams was in complete control throughout the fight but it took until the 13th round before he put Bolanos on the canvas. Bolanos would be floored twice in the thirteenth and once in the fourteenth round but come back for more each time. When Williams knocked him down again in the 15th with a devasting uppercut Bolanos again managed to regain his feet. However, he was clearly unable to defend himself and the fight was stopped with a minute remaining in the final round. If it had gone to the cards Williams would have won handily.

Williams, a Trenton New Jersey native, earns the Lightweight belt for his effort, which comes at the conclusion of a year long challenge to determine a new champion. During World War II all major boxing ceased to exist so an elimination tournament had to be held to determine a new champion in each of the 8 major weight classes.

Next up for Williams is a trip to Cardiff, Wales where he has a bout scheduled with British Champion Ronnie James. James was just 3-5-1 in the elimination tournament and is presently ranked 51st overall by the boxing organization so it should not be much of a challenge for the undefeated Williams. However, James will have the support of a rabid hometown crowd and the luxury of not having to make a cross ocean journey prior to the fight.

Two other Lightweight battles were contested in Philadelphia this week. Hometown hero Bob Montgomery delighted the Philadelphia faithful by knocking out Allie Stolz in the 8th round to remain undefeated. The victory puts Montgomery in line for a title shot against Williams perhaps early next year. For Stolz it is his second loss against 14 wins. In the other bout, Joe Brown solidified his spot as the number one contender with a unanimous decision over Art Aragon.

Here are the top 10 Lightweights in the World

1 - Ike Williams 17-0 World Champion from Trenton, New Jersey
2 - Joe Brown 12-2 from New Orleans
3 - Bob Montgomery 9-0 Philadelphia
4 - Enrique Bolanos 14-1 from Mexico but fights out of Los Angeles
5- Rudy Cruz 13-1 Los Angeles
6 - Jimmy Carter 14-4 New York City
7 - Art Aragon 12-4-1 Los Angeles
8 - Paddy DeMarco 11-4 Brooklyn
9 - Allie Stolz 14-2-1 Brooklyn
10 - Maxie Docusen 6-1 New Orleans

PEP WINS FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
Willie Pep completely dominated Sandy Saddler to capture the World Featherweight Title at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Depending on the scorecard Pep won either 12 or 13 of the 15 rounds against his counterpart. The victory keeps Pep as the only undefeated fighter among the leading featherweight contenders. Both of Saddler's losses have come against Pep with the first one being an especially spirited bout between the two New Englanders in New Haven, Connecticut.

On the undercard, Seattle native Harold Hoshino stopped Charlie Riley in the 2nd round of their bout. With the victory Hoshino is now considered the number 1 challenger for Pep's featherweight title.

Here are the top 10 Featherweights
1 - Willie Pep 17-0 Featherwight Champion from Hartford, Conn.
2 - Harold Hoshino 25-3-1 Seattle
3 - Sandy Saddler 22-2 Boston
4 - Charlie Riley 22-4 St Louis
5 - Henry Armstrong 30-1 Columbus, Mississippi
6 - Georgie Hansford 20-12 Cedar Rapids, Iowa
7 - Simon Vegara 36-6-2 Panama
8 - Tsuneo Horiguchi 28-9-2 Chigasaka, Japan
9 - Ray Famechon 24-11 Sous-le-Bois-Maubeurge, France
10- Chalky Wright 24-6-1 San Bernardino, California

Next week the Welterweight and Bantamweight champions will be announced plus Ike Williams defends his title against Ronnie James. The Williams-James fight will correspond with a real life bout between the two.

I can't tell you how cool this is or how much I enjoy each issue. Although this is a new concept, you tell this is from the same old Tiger Fan because you've inspired me to go out and try it myself. I have most of the games above but golf is giving me some problems...would it be too much to ask for a copy of players and courses file- or could you just tell me where you found stats for that far back? Thanks and here to hoping for the Chiefs first playoff . jazzkat10@juno.com

Sure Games I am using are as follows:

Baseball OOTP from here obviously

NFL Football : Total Pro Football from 400 software studios http://www.400softwarestudios.com/main.php

I use these sites to help with my real players that I have added in.
http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/rosters.nsf
http://www.profootballreference.com/
Also I did a lot of searching for things like college award winners and star players of the era.

CFL and College Football from a game called Quick Play which I downloaded from Table Top Sports. Here is the main site link http://www.tabletop-sports.com/
and here is the link to the files for the college and cfl http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...ownload&sid=30

The included CFL files did not go back far enough so I needed to manually create ratings based on the data I could gather for the Canadian Football teams of the late forties.

This site helped me with CFL historical info
http://www.geocities.com/cflhistory/History/index.htm

This site gave me the real college schedule for my replay
http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/~dwils...istory/howell/

Basketball - Also from Table Top sports a game called Barnes NBA. I manually created the teams for the year I wanted using the info I found at http://www.basketball-reference.com/

The download link to the Barnes NBA game is here
http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...=getit&lid=317

This site helped with some of the basketball history as well
http://members.aol.com/bradleyrd/apbr.html

College Basketball - Nothing so far. Ideally I would like to find a quickplay game that will allow me to simulate results very quickly. Just team scores is sufficient although it would be nice if individual players point totals could also be in the game. If you have a suggestion that meets that criteria please let me know.

Hockey - Originally I was going to use a nifty little game called Quick Play hockey which is a dice game that can be played in a matter of 5 minutes per game. Here is the link http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...=getit&lid=122

However, I later decided I would use Whatif Sports instead since it includes the era I wish to play. Here is the link. http://www.whatifsports.com/locker/default.asp

A great spot for hockey stats that is similiar to baseballreference is here : http://www.hockeydb.com/

For sports schedules I went here : http://www.shrpsports.com/

For boxing info I went here:
http://cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/hist-idx.htm
http://www.boxrec.com/
The boxing game I am using is TBCB from OOTPdevelopments. It took me a little time to get comfortable with the interface but now that I am there is a great amount of detail. More than enough to make it a very worthwhile purchase even for a casual boxing fan like myself.

For golf info I used microfilm from my local library and also did plenty of websearching.
The golf game I am using is here and is also a Quick Play game:
http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...ownload&sid=65

However, I had to manually rate all of the 1946 golfers myself. I can not vouch for the ratings accuracy since I could find very little statistical data but overall I think my ratings do an acceptable job.

We have not got to it yet but I also downloaded a free Indy 500 game that has ratings created for about 80 years worth of the race. I found it at this site: http://tmsportsgames.com/

The one other sport I am missing I would like to add is a horse racing game that will allow me to replay the Triple Crown. I am told this is an outstanding game : http://www.horseracegame.com/
However, it is also fairly pricey and I have no interest in horse racing except to round out my replay. So if anyone knows an inexpensive game that will either have real Triple Crown horses of the past or at least allow me to edit things please pass along a link.

If I can find a quickplay type college basketball game with ratings for the forties and a horseracing game my sim universe will be complete.

I believe that covers everything. Again, I am forced to take a lot of creative liberties in this but for the most part it feels real - even the fictional players dominating my NFL. Hope these links help inspire others to try something similiar with an era of their choosing.

wow, even when you post links you go indepth thanks alot for the info. and the fact that you went to the library and pulled up microfilm/fiche for the golf section of your thread speaks volumes about how much work and depth your dynasty/thread really is. thanks again for both the links and the amazing job you do.

BASEBALL FEVER INFECTS CINCINNATI AFTER REDS TAKE 3 OF 4 FROM BUCS
Call them the Cincinnati Red-hots. The Redlegs took 3 of 4 games from the Pirates in Pittsburgh to start the week and enter a 4-game showdown at home against the Bucs trailing the league leaders by just two-and-a-half games.

The hottest team in baseball made life miserable for the Forbes Field faithful last week, at least from Tuesday thru Thursday. Pittsburgh won the opener as Cliff Melton was on the hill. Melton, as close to an automatic 'W' as you will ever find, improved to 23-8 with an 8-2 win. The Bucs got 4-rbi's from rookie outfielder Ralph Kiner in the game.

The rest of the week was all Cincinnati. On Tuesday Joe Medwick and Joe Dimaggio each had an rbi single in the top of the 9th to give the Reds a come-from-behind 7-6 victory that nulified a Pittsburgh 5 run outburst in the bottom of the 8th. On Wednesday Johnny Hutchings (16-6) pitched a 4-hit complete game as Cincinnati won a laugher 11-1. Thursday was the Howie Fox show as the Reds hurler won his 17th game and had 3 hits in Cincinnati's 5-3 victory. Over the weekend the Reds took two of three from the Phillies in Philadelphia while Pittsburgh won 2 of their 3 games at home against Brooklyn.

Cincinnati's final win in Philadelphia proved costly as Joe Dimaggio (.225,21,77) suffered a groin injury and had to be placed on the disabled list. Dimaggio had a huge game before the 9th inning injury which occurred while legging out a double. He homered and drove in 5 of the Reds runs in a 6-2 victory. The Pirates on the other hand have some good news for this week's 4-game set. Tony Cuccinello (.304,14,75) will be back in the lineup at second base. The allstar infielder was limited to one pinch-hit appearance in the series last week due to the effects of a concussion suffered 2 weeks ago.

The Reds gained another 2 games on the Pirates and now sport far and away the best record in baseball over the past month. Since August 1 Cincinnati is 25-8, or a .758 clip while in contrast the struggling Pirates are just 17-16 during the same period.

NATIONAL LEAGUE AWARDS
Cliff Melton of Pittsburgh was named the National League pitcher of the month after going 5-2 with a 1.57 era in August. Melton also won the award in June of this year as well. Pirates teammate Arky Vaughan was named the NL batter of the month. Vaughan hit .301 with 24 rbi's last month. He is presently second in the senior circuit in batting and 7th in rbi's.

Player of the week honours went to Vern Olsen of the Cubs. Olsen (14-14, 2.93) tossed a 2-hit shutout against the Braves on Friday and held the Giants to 8 hits in a 16-4 win on Monday. The 1942 pitcher of the year was 26-7 a year ago but like the rest of the Cubs roster has struggled for much of this season.

INDIANS EXTEND LEAD IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Cleveland Indians have now taken a 3.5 game lead on slumping Boston atop the American League standings. The Washington Senators are 4.5 back and, like Boston, appear to be fading. The key for Cleveland has been the league's best pitching staff led by 3rd year starter Steve Gromek (21-10, 2.79) who is looking more and more like a the favourite for AL pitcher of the year. The 26 year old has won 8 of his last 9 starts and has already surpassed his previous personal best for wins in a season. He was 17-18 a year ago after going 15-11 as a rookie. Gromek would have received serious consideration for rookie of the year had he not been sidelined for the season with a mid-August arm injury.

Red Sox first baseman Babe Young had a great week even though most of his teammates did not. Young (.303,16,75) was named player of the week after hitting .474 with 8 rbi's last week. Pitcher of the month honours went to Young's Boston teammate Andy Karl (19-8, 2.46). Karl was 5-1 in August but he hurt his back in his first September start and will likely be out of action for a week. The American League batter of the month is catcher Bob Scheffing (.303,14,45) of the Yankees. Sheffing hit .351 with 7 homers and 18 rbi's last month.

NFL ROUNDUP
BIG DAY FOR THE BIG NAME QUARTERBACKS AS NFL SEASON KICKS OFF
- Note in football coverage *by last name indicates real life player I created-
Sammy *Baugh and Sid *Luckman both had huge days Sunday during the NFL season opener. Baugh passed for 4 touchdowns and 394 yards as the Washington Redskins dropped New Orleans 35-23. Rookie Dante *Lavelli, the second overall pick in the draft, got his NFL feet wet early as Baugh connected with him on a 72 yard touchdown pass that opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. It was one of just 2 catches Lavelli would make in the game. Baugh's favourite receiver was as usual Wayne *Miller, who had 8 receptions including 1 for a touchdown. The Saints offense played well, led by 146 yards rushing from Todd Berger, but the defense was non-existant.

In Chicago, it was as usual the Sid *Luckman show. The veteran Bears QB completed 24 of 28 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears held on to beat St Louis 23-20. The Rams made it close by scoring 10 points in the final 5 minutes but could not get the ball back in time for a final field goal drive. Luckman spread his passes around as 8 Bears had at least one reception. Wide Receiver Ken *Kavanaugh led with 6 catches while fellow wideout Matt Sikahema had 107 yards receiving. The St Louis defense had a decent game, sacking Luckman twice and pressuring him often, but it did not seem to bother the veteran signal caller. The Rams run defense was outstanding limiting the Bears to just 2.4 yards per carry and holding starting RB George *McAfee to 35 yards on 14 carries. On offense, the Rams were having great success with 3rd year back Mike Largent, who gained 107 yards on the ground but St Louis was forced to abandon the running game after the Bears opened up a 23-10 lead late in the 3rd quarter. Rams QB Rod Dugas passed for 168 yards but most of that came late in the fourth when the Bears where in a prevent defense.

One of the marquee QB's who did not have a great day was Cincinnati veteran Bud Rutledge who's Bengals were beaten 17-13 by the Raiders in Oakland. Rutledge completed just 15 of his 34 passes, was picked off twice and sacked 4 times. In his defense he really should not have been playing as he could barely walk due to the ankle injury he suffered early in the preseason. Realistically he should not be playing until week 3 at the earliest but the Bengals have no other capable quarterback. After a shaky first half in which he threw both of his interceptions and allowed the Raiders to take a 17-3 lead, Rutledge did get better late in the game but he got little support from his teammates. Running back Bill *Dudley was held to just 2 yards rushing on 11 carries and the receivers had several dropped balls.

The Raiders defense was very good and running back Johnny Cushing had his usual 100 yard game (101 rushing this time out plus another 82 yards receiving). Oakland QB Antwan Baker threw for 311 yards and aside from one interception he made the safe play all game and let Cushing and the defense do the rest.

WATERFIELD AND LIONS DELIGHT HOMETOWN CROWD WITH 44-38 WIN
Could the future be now for the Detroit Lions? Coming off a 3-13 season that followed a pair of 6-10 campaigns it was easy to see why there was little optimism in the Motor City but that may change after the Lions offense scored 44 points on Sunday. Now true it was against an equally inept Seattle Seahawks squad and yes the Lions defense did surrender 38 points but it is the first time they have been over .500 at any point in the season since 1942. Second year QB Bob *Waterfield was outstanding, throwing 4 touchdown passes while completing 20 of 33 for 259 yards. He did get picked off once but it was a tipped ball and the offensive line allowed 2 sacks but even that terrible Detroit O-line looked much better than last year especially considering the outstanding work of first overall pick Lou *Groza. The former Ohio State standout offensive tackle had 4 pancakes and made several key run blocks. Third year running back Fred Johnson gained 118 yards on the ground.

The Seahawks offense was very good as QB Doug Kooistra threw 4 tocuhdown passes and rookie RB Marion *Motley ran for 60 yards and had a 14 yard reception. Second round pick Marcus Collinsworth had 6 receptions including one for his first career NFL touchdown. The Seattle defense, just like Detroit's, appeared to feel that we dont start playing for real until next week, as neither defense showed up.
