Batter Ratings / Handedness Split Mechanics Question
This question may seem too esoteric, so I'll try as hard as I can to be clear.
Do batter ratings take the handedness of the batter into account, as regards the expected splits of the pitcher? To be more specific, let me give an example. Let us consider two batters, one right handed, one left handed. They each have ratings of 60/60/60/60 against left-handed pitching. In fact, let us assume that even in the editor on 1-250 scale the attributes are identical. Will these two hitters hit equally well against left handed pitching? There are two options: 1) No, they will not, because even though their batter ratings are identical, the left handed pitchers themselves will have better ratings against the left handed batter, which will effectively make the left handed batter worse. 2) Yes, they will, because the batter ratings take into account the default splits of the opposing pitcher. So the left handed batter's 60 contact vL isn't in a vacuum, it's 60 contact when taking into account the better ratings left handed pitching will have against him. My instinct is the former, but I could be wrong. It's a fairly big deal, as if I am correct it means there's a secret 8-run split (the average distance between vR and vL splits for pitchers in my league) over and above what the batter ratings reveal. I could test this but I thought I'd toss the question out to see if anyone knew the answer. |

Every outcome in the game is the result of a combination of ratings -- the ratings of the batter, pitcher, fielders involved in the play and ballpark factors. So the answer to your question is the first of the two answers you give yourself. If two batters have identical ratings against a lefty, you want the pitcher to face the one he has the weaker platoon splits against, presumably (but not always) the right-handed batter.
