Major Role confusion offering contract

I tried to offer a Free Agent a contract and met his demand, but then he complained about the major role he asked for and instead wanted the exact same role. His 20 rating is now RW but he started as a defenseman and his scouting still compares him to defensemen, is that a possible reason?

Edit: Added mikemontrealer-majorrolecontract.zip to FTP so you can play with it.

From an anecdotal point of view, yes. I've seen similar things in my historical save, one of which was a goaltender with the only selections for a forward. I've also seen other position players with the wrong type of selections just like what you're seeing here.

Also, most players entering the league with a contract already have the role of "agitator", which doesn't always make sense.

Looks like the problem is the player's internal template, which is still for a defenceman. I'll have to figure out a way for the role evaluation to get around conflicting templates like that. For now, though, if you turn commissioner mode on and edit the player's Template description to "Winger, Offense-Oriented", he'll accept the Offensive Forward role.

It wasn't a huge deal so I ended up getting a different option, but what was interesting is he ended up signing with another team a week later (still showing the same role). Does that mean the AI doesn't have to deal with the role offered in the same way?

It does, but the offer (any part of it - cash, length, the team's recent performance, the player wanting to be on that team, etc.) may have been enough to override the less-preferred role. Unless he signed with a team in a nonplayable league, in that case it would've been ignored.

OK, that makes sense. It was definitely a playable league (NHL) so it must have been enough. Good to know, thanks!
