1901 through 2007 replay

I finally finished my replay up to 1-1-2008 and was surprised at some things I found.

No team has a double digit total in championships. The closest is the Athletics with 9 titles. Several teams have made it to the playoffs 20 plus times however: Braves (20), Twins (22), Athletics (21), Phillies (22), Pirates (20) and Giants (21)

As it stands, only three teams have never won a World Series title, the Diamondbacks, Royals, and Mariners.

Mark McGwire, who spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds, is the all-time home run leader with 801 and he also holds the single season record at 68, accomplished in 1991. However, McGwire has been retired since the 2002 season and the career total is within the sights of Barry Bonds, who is second with 775. At 42, however, Bonds career with the Giants may be coming to an end and he only hit 8 homers in an injury shortened 2007.

Stan Musial, who spent the bulk of his career as a Giant both in NY and SF, is the alltime hits leader with 3822, a cool 399 hits ahead of the real life leader Pete Rose.

Sandy Koufax, a career-long Cleveland Indians hurler through 1974, is the all-time strikeout leader with 4340, just ahead of Nolan Ryan (4071) and JR Richard (4025). These three are the only pitchers to cross the 4000 strikeout threshold.

IRL, my favorite player for the Royals was George Brett. In my replay, he spent 20 of his 22 seasons with the Phillies, before finishing up with the Minnesota Twins.

Here's a comparison between reallife and the replay. Really pretty close, if you ask me
Code:
           G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BB
REAL 2707 10349 3154 665 137 317 1595 201 1096
REPLAY 2830 10411 3160 583 128 303 1460 254 1044

Very impressive. How did Lou Brock, Maury Wills, Rickey Henderson, Vince Coleman and other guys like them do in your sim?

Thanks for checking in! Here's the first couple guys of your request, Lou and Maury. Keep in mind that I didn't change any of the default settings when running this replay.

Code:
           G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SB AVG
REAL 2616 10332 1610 3023 486 141 149 900 761 938 .293
REPLAY 2594 7659 1088 2143 324 101 96 760 577 602 .280
Lou had a rough time in his career, especially late as he had several injuries that kept him under 100 games 4 times from 75-79. Originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox, Lou was traded for a pair of middle relievers in November of 64 to the Phils, which was just the start of his travels. In a span of 5 years, Lou went from Philly to SF to Sea/Mil back to Philly, traded each time. In his career, Lou lead the league twice in triples (1965/12 & 1969/11) and seven times in stolen bases (1964 through 1966/35/46/51, 1968/52, & 1972 through 1974/39/49/62). Lou was named player of the the week three times (1966, 1968, 1982), Rookie of the month in September 1960 and selected to the All Star game in 1966, 1968 & 1974.

Code:
           G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SB AVG
REAL 1942 7588 1067 2134 177 71 20 458 552 586 .281
REPLAY 1865 7193 859 1877 193 82 21 553 519 399 .261
Maury spent his career with 4 teams (Red Sox, Colt 45's, Orioles and Senators) with his longest stretch being 5 years in Houston after being taken 6th overall in the expansion draft. Maury was named player of the week once (1960), selected to the All-Star game in 1962, and a gold glove award winner at shortstop 4 times (1959, 1961, 1963, `1965).

and here's the other two, Rickey and Vince

Code:
           G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SB AVG

Rickey was drafted in 78 by the Dodgers. In this replay, Rickey retired 3 years earlier than IRL, and finished second in steals behind Billy Hamilton's 995. Rickey was a 3 time player of the week, 5 time Gold Glove winner and 6 time All Star. In 1982, he led the majors with a .427 OBP and in 1983 he led in runs with 116. His only postseason appearances were major disappoinments individually as he managed only 6 hits in 44 at bats

Code:
            G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SB AVG
REAL 1371 5406 849 1425 176 89 28 346 477 752 .264

Vince was drafted by the Braves in 1984 and was traded to the Blue Jays prior to the 1991 season. His career had to be considered a disappointment as he sat around after his last full season in 1994 for two years until retiring in 1996. Multiple injuries throughout his career, along with drug suspensions, really kept Vince from meeting his full potential.

Were stolen bases down across the board in your replay, or just with those who were best in real life? Every one of the guys you posted about had significantly less steals than in real life.

Dagrims, I'm really not sure. I haven't looked that hard at the steals, but it is something to research. I'll take a quick look and let you know.

Well, here's a quick comparison of leagues through the most recent 10 year span...draw from it what you will, but in this decade, it seems that the AL is down overall, while the NL is up overall. As you can see, some years the numbers are really very close, with only a couple of really out of whack variances (+389 and -293).

Again, this is using the default setup right out the box, so to speak. I'm still compiling numbers, but this is what I've got so far

Question

RoyalsBlue,

I'm in the very beginning stages of running the same kind of league however I started in 1900.

In your Historical Options, did you Recalc the players ratings based on real stats after each year?

Also, did you have a minor league?

Thanks

B.O.T.S.,

The recalc was set at every 3 years, I believe that is the default setting once you download the file. And no, I didn't have any minors

Also, for those of you that are interested, my research on stolen bases in my replay is on hold at the moment, since I just got NCAA 09 for the 360. I should have the rest of the years posted sometime this weekend..

jaguar - let OOTP automatically adjust league totals modifiers each year for historical accuracy. You need to check that box. This is meant to be hands-off so that all you need to do is manage and play the game. The game automatically calculates the needed modifiers to produce the correct ratios for things like league batting average, HR per AB, FLD%, Double Plays, and so forth every season.

I uncheck "league modifiers" because I don't want Historical Accuracy,

My goal is to try and get years 1901-Present to have league totals that we do in present day, what this means is that I want the league average to be around 260-265. When I did a test sim from 1901- to 1941, it started out good but steadily every year the averages climbed until in 1941 when the league average was 305!

To do that you'd need to make your own custom era_stats.txt file with the leaue ratios that you want and apply that to all the yearly entries 1871-2007and swap that into the gam. Then you'd need to turn on automatically update league totals modifiers and the game will calculate the needed modifiers each seasn to produce those results.

The 1.000 modifiers does not mean you get modern day results. The outcomes are more complicated than that. But if you tell the game what you want it to do via the era_stats file and turn on the auto-update league totals modifiers it will do it perfectly for you each season.

I am uploading a modified era_stats file here. All seasons are set to 2001 ratios for everything, including double plays, SP usage, FLD%, etc.

The file is name modern_era_stats. You must download the file, and then rename it era_stats. You will find the game's default era_stats file here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 9\database

You must rename the default file something else, like original_era_stats sp that you don't lose it. Then simply place this modified file in the folder.

Once you do that al you need to do is turn on "automatically update league totals modifiers each season or historical accuracy" and all seasons after the initial will play very close to these ratios.
Attached Files
File Type: txt modern_era_stats.txt (39.3 KB, 145 views)

I tested out your file, Batting averages are skyrocketing... down, started out with 265 in 1901 and I am in 1908 and it's 233, every year its gone down.

Edit: Simmed till 1917, its stagnant at around 243 right now

Edit 2 Simmed till 1930 around 234 right now, Lack of Home Runs are a huge problem, league leader had 1 last year

Edit 3: set it as "don't adjust historical modifiers" got stagnant averages throughout but they were 288, this is 1901- 1920

Man, what a thread-jacking! Just kidding, glad to see this thread is useful for something besides taking up server space!

anywho, here's the second decade that I've gotten through

Code:
            NL REPLAY AL REPLAY
1997 1817 1702 (-115) 1491 1683 (+192)
1996 1785 1550 (-235) 1454 1756 (+302)
1995 1602 1330 (-272) 1331 1526 (+195)
1994 1646 1141 (-505) 1117 1883 (+766)
1993 1714 1465 (-249) 1549 1552 (+3)
1992 1560 1743 (+183) 1704 1759 (+55)
1991 1651 1422 (-229) 1469 1443 (-26)
1990 1787 1398 (-389) 1503 1635 (+132)
1989 1529 1370 (-159) 1587 1772 (+185)
1988 1789 1754 (-35) 1512 1610 (+98)
If you take into account that the players aren't distributed as IRL (which I didn't in my first post on this subject), the overall steals aren't bad and certainly don't look as bad as the individual leagues can make them look (+766/-505 for example). Are they perfect historically? Probably not, but I didn't want an exact replication of history anyway.

Going to post a few screenshots of assorted players that are in the HOF in my replay.

Wade's career came to an abrupt stop in the 95 season with a career ending back injury, but his numbers were so good prior to this that he still made the HOF

Great thread.

I find it interesting that you used fictional pics for historical players. Kinda cool.

I am guessing you turned player development OFF?

Thanks for reading, SittingDuck, glad you like it so far. Actually, I left player development on, but with the 3 year recalc on, I think that took precedence. Somebody who's more familiar with the inner workings could probably tell us for sure, but that's my hypothesis.

As far as the pictures go, I was just too lazy to dl any for this replay. Figured it would be better to just go with FaceGen.
