1922: Year In Review

1921-22 SEASON: NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE RECAP
The 1921-22 NHL season was a tight 3 way race all year between Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. Only the miserable Hamilton Tigers were left out of the playoff picture. The season went down to the final day when Ottawa beat Montreal 6-3 to leap a point ahead of Toronto into first place while eliminating the Canadiens in the process. In real life the order of the standings were the same but it was not quite as close a race.

Ottawa had the most potent offense in the league led by league scoring leader Harry 'Punch' Broadbent and his linemates Cy Denneny and Frank Nighbor. Toronto had a balanced offense headed by Babe Dye while in Montreal the Canadiens relied on the goaltending of Georges Vezina. Hamilton had the great Joe Malone but little else.

Ottawa's big line of Denneny, Broadbent and Nighbor scored 27 of the Senators 36 goals and the trioka combined for 55 points in 4 games.

STANLEY CUP CHALLENGE
SENATORS SWEEP VANCOUVER TO WIN STANLEY CUP

The Stanley Cup did not automatically go to the NHL champion during this era. Instead it was awarded to the winner of a challenge series between the best team in the NHL and the best team in the West. The West champion would come out of either the Pacific Coast Hockey Association or the Western Canada Hockey League. This year the PCHA's Vancouver Maroons (name change from Millionaires the previous season) would beat WCHL champ Regina for the right to travel to Ottawa and meet the NHL champions in a best of 5 series. Vancouver had beaten Toronto St. Pats last season and was looking to repeat.

GAME 1-
Just as they did against Toronto in the NHL playoff the Ottawa Senators came out flying against Vancouver. The road weary Maroons stayed with the Sens for the first period, trailing just 2-1 after 20 minutes. However, Ottawa exploded for 5 unaswered goals in the second period and would win the game 9-1. Cy Denneny would score 3 times for Ottawa while linemates Punch Broadbent and Frank Nighbor would tally two each.

GAME 2-
Vancouver looked much better after a couple days rest and the Maroons took the Senators to overtime in the second contest despite being outshot 30-16 in regulation. Jack Adams, who would later become the longtime coach of the Detroit Red Wings, scored both Vancouver goals in the game including the equalizer with just under 3 minutes to play in regulation. Cy Denneny would end the game 10 minutes into overtime when he scored his second of the contest to give the Senators a 3-2 victory.

GAME 3-
Ottawa would build a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals from Buck Boucher and one from Denneny and then would survive a frantic Vancouver comeback attempt in the third period to win the game 3-2 and take the Stanley Cup in 3 straight games.

It marks the third time in 4 years of replaying NHL seasons that Ottawa won the Stanley Cup.

1921-22 SEASON: COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECAP

The 1921-22 college basketball season belonged to the Kansas Jayhawks and their sensational sophomore center Jesse Mason. The Jayhawks did not lose a game after January 6th and finished 37-2 including a 71-68 victory over Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game. The 6'10 Mason averaged 18.5 ppg and he captured nearly every award possible. Mason was named the college player of the year by both the NCAA and the Associated Press. He was Big 12 Player of the Year and a First Team All-America selection for the second season in a row. Mason dominated the boards as his 17.2 rebounds per game led the nation and were nearly 5 rebounds more per game than Kentucky's Marcel Jones, who finished second.

Kansas fans were obviously dissappointed but not surprised when they learned after the championship game that Mason had decided to forego his final two years of eligibility and turn pro. He should be a lock to be the number one pick in the PBA draft.

Another future pro hoops star will be Kentucky forward Marcel Jones. The senior finished second in the nation behind Mason with 12.4 rebounds per game while leading the Wildcats with 16.4 points per game. He was named a first team All-American for the second straight season and capped an outstanding college career by nearly singlehandedly carrying the Wildcats to the NCAA title game. He was rewarded with the Tournament MVP trophy for his post-season efforts. Unfortunately for Wildcat supporters, Kentucky was beaten by Kansas in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. In 1921 it was in the East Regional Final that the Jayhawks knocked off the Wildcats enroute to their first National Title.

A pair of UCLA Bruins joined Mason and Jones as All-Americans. Sophomore forward Derrick Finneman (20.7 ppg, 12.2 rpg) and junior guard Colin Lowe (18.1 ppg, 3.6 apg) had the Bruins ranked 3rd in the nation at tournament time and they were rewarded with a number one seed. Unfortunately they lost to CCNY in the Sweet 16 as the Bruins tournament woes continued. Last year as a second seed they were knocked out in the opening round by lowly Central Connecticut State.

The final member of the first team All-America squad is Virginia freshman Jeremy Dyse (21.9 ppg). An 11th seed in the NCAA tournament, the 18-12 Cavaliers upset Notre Dame in the opening round before falling to New York University.

Here is a look back at the tournament results and other notes on the 1921-22 college basketball season:

JANUARY 7, 1922
TOP RANKED JAYHAWKS SUFFER BACK TO BACK LOSSES

Defending NCAA college basketball champion Kansas got into trouble early in the Big 12 schedule. After beginning their season with 15 straight victories including a 75-49 pounding of Nebraska in the Big 12 opener, the Jayhawks lost back to back road games this week, falling 73-66 at Oklahoma and 62-55 at Missouri.

Despite the setbacks the Jayhawks retained the nation's number one ranking. UCLA (15-3), Indiana (17-1), Kentucky (14-4) and San Francisco (15-5) round out the top five.

FEBRUARY 27, 1922
KANSAS REMAINS NUMBER ONE ENTERING CONFERENCE TOURNEYS

The Kansas Jayhawks finish February the way the started October - as the nation's number one team. The Jayhawks have held the number one ranking all season as they have won 28 out of 30 games. The only blemishes on their season so far were back to back conference road losses to Oklahoma and Missouri in early January. Kansas finished atop the Big 12 regular season standings with a 14-2 conference record, 3 games better than Missouri and Louisville.

Kansas center Jesse Mason (18.3 ppg, 16.9 rpg) remains the favourite to win the Norton Award. The sophomore is one of two first team All-Americans last season that are in contention for College Player of the Year honours. Senior forward Marcel Jones (16.6 ppg, 12.4 rpg) should challenge Mason for that award as will a pair of UCLA Bruins in sophomore forward Derrick Finnerman (20.3 ppg) and junior guard Colin Lowe (18.1 ppg, 3.7 apg)

DENVER SHOCKS COLORADO STATE IN SKYLINE TOURNAMENT

The college basketball conference tournaments are heating up and the biggest upset so far came from the Skyline Conference where 12th ranked Colorado State (26-4) was upset by Denver 73-65 in the semi-finals. Denver(17-14) would go on to beat Utah 68-64 to earn the conference's automatic bid in to the NCAA Tournament. Despite the setback Colorado State should still earn an at-large bid.

FINAL FOUR

Kansas was the number one team in the nation all year and the Jayhawks proved it in the opening game with a 61-52 victory over Georgia that was no where near as close as the score indicated. Kansas led 30-14 at the half and cruised through the second half for an easy win. Sophomore center Jesse Mason, who was a First team All-America selection and NCAA Tournament MVP as a freshman, led the way with 10 points and 19 rebounds. Junior guard Lars George led all scorers with 19 points for the defending National Champions.

Senior forward Marcel Jones powered Kentucky to a 62-53 victory over Texas in the second game. Jones, who also was a first team All-America selection a year ago, had 25 points and added 10 rebounds.

KANSAS REPEATS AS NATIONAL CHAMPION

Super sophomore center Jesse Mason had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Kansas Jayhawks to their second straight NCAA Tournament title after they beat Kentucky 71-68 in the championship game. Junior guard Lars George added 21 points for the Jayhawks including 4 clutch free throws in the final 45 seconds to seal the victory. Marcel Jones of Kentucky had his lowest point total of the tournament, scoring 17 points but his performance over the last 3 weeks was good enough to earn him the NCAA tournament MVP award.

Kansas joins North Carolina as two time National Champions since the tournament was formed in 1918. The Jayhawks will have a tough time going for 3 straight as following the title game Mason announced he will forego his final two seasons of eligibility and turn pro.

1922-23 PRESEASON NOTES

On the strength of landing the number one recruit in the nation the Arkansas Razorbacks are rated as having the top freshman class entering the 1922-23 campaign. Signing center Jerrry Gurley out from under the nose of his home state teams Georgia and Georgia Tech was consider a major coup for the Razorbacks who also added two other top recruits in PF Ben Route and SF Paul Lyons. Georgia, Virginia, NYU and Baylor round out the top 5 freshman classes according to the Associated Press. Defending National Champion Kansas is ranked 12th. The Jayhawks added an outstanding young shooting guard in Argyle, Texas native John Bond but the big hole will be in the middle with absence of national player of the year Jesse Mason.

Looking ahead to 1923-24 Kansas did get a verbal committment from one of the top high school seniors in the nation as power forward Grant Jones has decided to become a Jayhawk. Kentucky looks to have the best freshman class for next season after the Wildcats signed two of the top 10 prospects in the nation including Sterling, Illinois point guard Syl Marshall, who was ranked number one in the country.

UCLA BRUINS ARE PRESEASON #1
With a pair of All-Americans in Derrick Finneman and Colin Lowe returning it is easy to see why the UCLA Bruins are number one in the preseason college basketball polls. Here are the preseason top 20.

1921-22 SEASON: PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE RECAP
Just as they did last season the Toronto Huskies finished with the best regular season record in the PBL. However, the Huskies are hoping one thing changes from last year and that is how far they get in the playoffs. Toronto was knocked off by Youngstown in the Eastern Conference Final and once again it looks like the Bears will provide the Huskies with their biggest challenge. Out West New Orleans was the most dominant team in the regular season but you can't overlook the Detroit Eagles, who won the initial PBL Championship last year.

1921-22 PBL PLAYOFF RECAPS
In the Eastern Conference the playoffs went pretty much as expected. Each of the top 4 seeds had little trouble in the opening round as Toronto and Syracuse each advanced in 5 games while Youngstown and Virginia needed 6 games to close out their opponents. All season long Toronto and Youngstown were the class of the East and they once again proved that in the second round. The Huskies swept Syracuse in 4 games while the Bears dispatched Virginia in 5 to set up a rematch of last season's Eastern Conference Final.

Out West, things could not have been any less predictable. The first round was full of upsets as the top three seeds all went down. Dallas shocked the conference's best regular season team by knocking off their South Division rivals from New Orleans in 5 games. Defending league champion Detroit was beaten in 6 games by Indianapolis while the 6th seeded Houston Mavericks disposed of 3rd seed Cincinnati in 5 games. Only 4th seeded Denver manage to escape the first round with a 7 game win over the Fort Wayne Pistons. In the second round Denver and Cincinnati advanced after two hard fought series. The Nuggets struggled with a game Dallas squad before beating the Rangers in 6 games while the Royals needed overtime in Game Seven to end Indianapolis' season.

CONFERENCE FINALS
It was widely expected the winner of the Toronto-Youngstown series would easily take the PBL title as the winner in the West was not expected to be much of a match for the Eastern powers. Toronto got it's revenge on Youngstown for last season by beating the Bears in 6 hard-fought games. 5 of the 6 were decided by less than 6 points and 2 of them, both Toronto wins, went into overtime.

The Western Final went the full 7 games with Denver winning both game six and seven on a final shot. The seventh game went to double overtime before the Nuggets prevailed 112-110.

PBL CHAMPIONSHIP
Riding on adrenalin from their Western Conference final victory the Denver Nuggets took the opening game of the Finals against the heavily favoured Huskies. However, Toronto roared back and won 4 straight to claim the league title.

NOTES
Travis Jackson of New Orleans was named the league MVP. Jackson averaged 27.3 ppg and 10.0 apg

The rookie of the year award went to former Texas A&M star Michael McMaster. The Pittsburgh Raiders guard had 14.1 points per game.

1922 PBL OFFSEASON NOTES
MASON SLIPS TO THIRD IN PBL DRAFT

All season long scouts had been calling Kansas sophomore center Jesse Mason the best player in college and a lock to be the number one pick if he turned pro. Well, after winning his second straight National Championship with Kansas and being named the college player of the year, Mason did indeed turn pro but he was not drafted first overall.

The Providence Steamrollers won the draft lottery and elected to take two-time first team All-American Marcel Jones from Kentucky with the first pick. Minneapolis selected second and most expected to immediately hear Mason's name but the Lakers shocked everyone by taking small forward Jason Powers from Georgia. That meant that Mason slipped to third where the Pittsburgh Raiders immediately grabbed him.

1922 INDIANAPOLIS 500 RECAP
Just as in real life Jimmy Murphy was the winner of my 1922 Indianapolis 500 replay. Murphy started on the pole and held the lead for 46 laps before being passed by Ralph DePalma. Murphy would slip back as far as fifth as the race hit the midway point. However, he made a strong charge shortly after that and on lap 128 he regained the lead and would hold it pretty much the rest of the way. Murphy was briefly overtaken by Harry Hartz with 11 laps to go but he would pass Hartz with 8 laps remaining in the 200 lap race and he would finished 42 seconds ahead of Hartz. Eddie Hearne would also finish on the lead lap.

The race itself was probably the closest to real life I have had as each of the top 5 driver's finished in the exact same spot they did in the real 1922 Indy 500. As for the champion Murphy, it was his third Indy 500. He finished 6th in my 1920 sim and 9th last year. In real life he finished 4th in 1920 and 14th in 1921.

Like so many of the early drivers I am learning about in this replay, Jimmy Murphy would die on the racetrack. He was the American Racing Champion in 1922 and 1924 and would compete in 5 Indy 500 races. In addition to the 3 results I mentioned above he also was entered in the 1923 and 1924 Indy races and finished 3rd both times. Although more a road racer than a dirt track driver, the 30 year old San Francisco native agreed to appear at a race promoted by a friend in Syracuse in September 1924. As he charged for the lead late in the race, his car slid sideways and crashed through the inside wooden rail. A large piece of the rail was pushed through Jimmy's chest, and he died before he could be taken to the hospital. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1998.

1922 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL RECAP
GIANTS ONCE AGAIN CLASS OF NATIONAL LEAGUE

For the fourth straight season the New York Giants were the National League champions. Led by the strong arms of Red Faber (20-11, 3.33) and Waite Hoyt (21-12, 4.16) the Giants had the best pitching staff in the Senior Circuit. They also led the National League in runs scored thanks to an offense that featured Frankie Frisch (.341,10,81), Happy Felsch (.317,16,100), Hack Miller (.315,27,128) and catcher Earl Smith (.297,26,99).

The biggest surprise in the National League came from Brooklyn, where the Dodgers improved by 26 games from a year ago and climbed to within a game of second place after finishing dead last in 1921.

Once again the league MVP was St Louis infielder Rogers Hornsby (.378,27,108). Hornsby has claimed the MVP trophy 4 straight seasons and 5 of the past 6. His St Louis teammate Jim Bottomley (.373,14,75) was named the league's top newcomer. The 22 year old did not see everyday action until late June but once he got in the lineup Bottomley played like a veteran. Jesse Barnes (23-10, 3.47) of the Boston Braves led the league in wins and was named the top hurler. Barnes also won the award in 1917.

In the American League the dealing of Babe Ruth and an improved Philadelphia Athletics club finally caught up with the Boston Red Sox ending the New Englanders two year run as the class of the American League. Ruth (.351,52,145) did not set another home run record but he did more than enough to win his 5th straight American League MVP award. However, the bat's of Ruth and emerging star Bob Meusel (.319,22,124) were not enough to make up for a dismal pitching staff so the New York Yankees were once again confined to the lower division.

Pitcher Dixie Walker (23-10, 3.15) was a key reason Philadelphia returned to the World Series after a 2 year absence. Walker, Herb Pennock (22-7, 3.37), Dickey Kerr (19-10,4.61) and Burleigh Grimes (16-16, 5.04) gave the A's the best pitching staff in the American League. Offense was also plentiful in Philadelphia thanks to talented players like league batting champ Joe Jackson (.389,14,105), young slugger Joe Hauser (.288,24,132), Buck Weaver (.325,5,82) and Jimmy Dykes (.317,11,105).

The second place Red Sox still had plenty of pitching led by Sailor Stroud (22-7, 3.18), Joe Harris (14-13, 4.13) and Lynn Brenton (13-11, 3.44) but the offense slumped to the middle of the pack. Outfielders Tris Speaker (.364,15,100) and Harry Hooper (.319,12,99) had strong seasons but Al Scheer (.287,4,57) was a far cry from Babe Ruth at first base.

1922 WORLD SERIES: A's vs GIANTS
REMATCH OF 1911 FALL CLASSIC WON BY A's

GAME 1: GIANTS HAMMER A'S 9-1 IN SERIES OPENER AT SHIBE PARK
Red Faber pitched a complete game 2-hitter while Earl Smith and Frankie Frisch each hit 2-run homers to lead the New York Giants to a 9-1 victory over the hometown Philadelphia Athletics in Game One of the 1922 World Series. New York batters lit up A's starter Herb Pennock for 4 runs in the first inning and 2 more in the second to make the game a laugher. Frisch and Ross Youngs each had 3 hits to lead the Giants.

GAME 2: A's HANG ON TO WIN 8-7 AND EVEN SERIES
The Philadelphia Athletics withstood a 9th inning New York rally in which the Giants scored twice and had the tying run on third base with one out but were unable to get the equalizer in an 8-7 A's victory. Joe Hauser and Whitey Witt each drove in two runs for the A's, who won despite being outhit 14-11. Buck Weaver had 3 of the Philadelphia hits and he scored twice. Hack Miller's 3 run homer in the 4th inning was the big blow for the Giants. Burleigh Grimes earned the victory while Rosy Ryan took the loss for New York.

GAME 3: JACKSON RBI SINGLE IN 9TH GIVES WHITE ELEPHANTS 2-1 SERIES LEAD
After going hitless in the first two games of the series, American League batting champ Joe Jackson had 2 hits in Game 3 including an rbi single in the top of the ninth that plated Buck Weaver with the winning run in a 5-4 Athletics victory. Philadelphia had to overcome a 4-0 first inning deficeit to rally past the hometown New York Giants and take a 2 games to one lead in the World Series. American League pitcher of the year Dixie Walker survived the rough first inning and allowed just 2 hits the rest of the way for his second career postseason victory. Waite Hoyt took the loss after the Giants elected not to go to the bullpen for the ninth inning.

GAME 4: GIANTS EVEN SERIES WITH EXTRA-INNING WIN
The World Series is now tied at two games apiece after the New York Giants beat Philadelphia 4-3 in a game four that lasted 10 innings. Hack Miller doubled in Ray Grimes with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10 inning to give New York the victory. Grimes was the star of the day for the Giants as he went 5-for-5, scoring 3 runs and driving in the other Giant tally. Red Faber got his second win of the series while Herb Pennock was the losing pitcher for the second time.

GAME 5: GIANTS WIN ON LAST AT BAT AGAIN
For the second day in a row the Giants scored in their final at-bat to beat the Philadelphia Athletics 4-3. 37 year old Art Fletcher was the unlikely hero, delivering a pinch-hit single with one out in the bottom of the 9th and the bases loaded to plate Happy Felsch with the winning run. Fletcher, who spent most of the season at AAA Jersey City, had not appeared in a postseason game since the 1911 series when he hit just .133 against the Athletics.

Ralph Miller (no relation to teammate Hack) homered for the Giants while Jimmy Dykes hit a round-tripper for the Athletics. Huck Betts got the win in relief of Rosy Ryan while Burleigh Grimes was tagged with the loss.

GAME 6: GIANTS WIN WORLD SERIES
The New York Giants beat Philadelphia 6-4 to win their third World Championship in the past four years. Hack Miller snapped a 4-4 with a solo homerun off of losing pitcher Dixie Walker in the top of the 6th inning to lead the Giants to victory. The run came an inning after the A's had tied the game on a 2-run shot off the bat of Whitey Witt.

Hack Miller also doubled and scored 3 runs in the game to cap a brilliant World Series for the 28 year old outfielder who was named World Series MVP for the second year in a row. In 6 games he hit .417 with 2 homers and 8 rbi's.

The difference in the series was the New York offense performed while the Philadelphia batters did not. In addition to Hack Miller's .417 average the Giants had plenty of offense from Frankie Frisch (.370), Heinie Groh (.353), Ray Grimes (.320) and Happy Felsch (.393). Only Ross Youngs (.200) and Earl Smith (.111) struggled.

On the Philadelphia side only Whitey Witt (.381) and Buck Weaver (.370) hit well. Lead-off man Eddie Collins batted just .130 for the series and failed to score a run. Batting champ Joe Jackson hit just .227. Rookie slugger Joe Hauser did drive in 5 runs but batted just .250. Number five hitter Jimmy Dykes hit just .176.

1922 GOLF RECAP
xBARNES REMAINS WORLD'S TOP GOLFER

1922 ended exactly as it started with Long Jim xBarnes ranked as the number one golfer in the world. For the second year in a row xBarnes led the PGA tour in earnings as he pocketed nearly $5,400 for his efforts which include wins at the St. Petersburg, Metropolitan and California Opens. While xBarnes did not win the third major of his career, he did finish second in the PGA Championship and 4th in the US Open.

Thanks to wins at the North and South Open and the Canadian Open, 39 year old Martin xO'Laughlin finished second on the PGA money list just ahead of young Bobby xJones. xJones won only one event this year, the prestigous Los Angeles Open at Riviera, but the 22 year old was consistant with 14 top ten finishes. Rounding out the top 5 money winners on the PGA were Tommy xArmour and MacDonald xSmith.

Internationally, Willie xMacFarlane was the top money winner on the European Tour for the 3rd year in a row. xMacFarlane won 6 tournaments this year and finished second in the British Open to move up to the number two ranking in the world.

The three major tournaments of the year provided some thrilling finishes. The first major of the season was the United States Open which was held at Skokie Country Club in Illinois. Enjoying a 5 stroke lead heading into Sunday's play it seemed that 22 year old Jimmy xHines had his second career major all wrapped up. However, after rounds of 72,73 and 69 on the par 71 course, xHines shot a dreadful 78 on Sunday which opened the door for another 22 year old in Gene xSarazen. xSarazen entered the day 8 strokes back of xHines but shot a 1 under par 70 to end the day tied for the lead. Alas, xSarazen's miracle comeback bid would fall just short as he would lose to xHines in a playoff.

xHines is off to an exceptional start in my replay. He has only won 2 tournaments but they are both majors and he is presently ranked 22nd in the world. In real life, the Mineola, New York native was a decent PGA pro, winning 9 tournaments and was named to the 1939 Ryder Cup team. However, he never won a major as the best he could do was tie for third in a couple of PGA Championships.

The British Open came down to the 18th hole on Sunday before Page xHufty could be crowned champion. Scottish golfing legend Willie xMacFarlane held the lead Friday and Saturday only to shot a 74 on Sunday at Royal St.George's and finish a stroke back of xHufty. xMacFarlane had a chance to force a playoff but he bogeyed 18 to drop a stroke behind the American.

xHufty entered the day tied with Tommy xArmour for third place, 4 strokes back of xMacFarlane. He led all golfers with a 2 under par 69 on the final day to earn the victory by one stroke over xMacFarlane and Chick xEvans. xArmour fell apart shooting 78 to drop into a tie for 8th.

In real life the Washington born Hufty made a much bigger mark in the insurance business than he did in golf. However, Hufty did win the 1926 North & South Amateur.

Unheralded Walter xLoeffler held off a hard charge from big name golfers Tommy xArmour and Long Jim xBarnes to win the 1922 PGA Championship by a single stroke. Perhaps it was the familiarity of Oakmont Country Club, where his brother and fellow tour professional Emil xLoeffler was a long time groundskeeper in real life, that allowed the younger xLoeffler to card an even par 71 on the final day and claim his first major championship.

1922 BOXING RECAP
DEMPSEY LOSES HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

The big news this year in boxing came early on as Jack Dempsey lost the World Heavyweight Title in January in a bout against Bartley Madden. It was a fight that Dempsey had well in hand until it was stopped in the 11th round because of a nasty cut over the champion's left eyebrow. The gash was opened in the 7th on one of the few punches Madden had landed up to that point in the fight. It worsened through the next 3 rounds until the referee and ringside doctor stopped the bout in the 11th.

The 32 year old Madden has to be the most unlikely of champions the heavyweight division has ever seen. His reign at the top was shortlived as the Irishman made one successful defense against journeyman Jack Stone before getting destroyed by Harry Wills in July.

Wills, who also held the World Heavyweight Title from 1916-19 and again in 1920, closed out the year with a successful defense against George Christian to improve his career record to 57-2. Jack Dempsey handed Willis the only two losses of his career. While anxiously waiting for another title shot Dempsey reeled off 5 straight knock-out victories to close out the year. He is 48-2 for his career.

LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION

The World Lightheavyweight title changed hands twice in 1922. In January Bob Sweeney won by TKO in the second round of his bout with Frank Moody to reclaim the crown that he held briefly in 1919. Moody was making just his second defense after winning the belt last summer.

Sweeney, a 28 year old Pennsylvania native, is nearing the end of a career that went much better than in real life. In my simulation Sweeney is 57-6-2 while in real life he was 25-23-9. He is perhaps best known for his bout against Bob Fitzsimmons in 1914, for it is considered to be the first bout ever captured on film.

Sweeney successfully defended his title twice in the summer, knocking out Frank Girton in the 6th round of their June bout and winning by disqualification over Tommy Gibbons at the end of July. For the 31 year old Gibbons (54-8-1) the loss was the third and likely final title shot of his career. The St Paul, Minnesota native lost an unanimous decision to Kid Norfolk in 1920 and a split decision to Jack Dillon in 1917.

Sweeney's run as champion came to an end in November when he was knocked out in the 5th round of his title defense against Connecticut native Lou Bogash. The 21 year old Bogash (34-3-0) gained the World Title he was denied in real life. In 1920 the real-life Bogash is said to have clearly been the better fighter in a draw against World Champion Jack Britton. Britton never gave Bogash a rematch. In my sim Britton and Bogash will never meet as I am restricting fighters to one division and Britton is in a different weight class.

Meanwhile, frustration continues for 25 year old Gene Tunney. At 40-3-1 and in the prime of his career he is considered to be the class of the division but has yet to receive a title shot. Two of Tunney's 3 losses came on disqualifications and the third was a close decision loss to Mike McTigue early in Tunney's career.

4- Mike McTigue 42-6-2 County Clare, Ireland
5- Jack Bloomfield	38-4-0 London, England

MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION

Mike O'Dowd's reign as Middleweight champ came to an end in October after 6 successful title defenses. O'Dowd was knocked out in the 11th round of his bout with Tiger Flowers allowing the 27 year old Georgia native to become the first African-American to hold the World Middleweight belt. Flowers is now 26-3 with 19 knockouts in his career.

O'Dowd (41-5-4) is by no means near the end of his career. The 27 year old Minnesota native, nicknamed the St.Paul Cyclone, will likely get another title shot at some point. He has held the belt on two occassions so far, from January 1921 after beating Jeff Smith until losing to Flowers, and also for 2 defenses in 1919.

With fighters like Flowers, O'Dowd (41-5-4), Harry Greb (50-4-3) and newcomers Jack Delaney (26-0-1) and Kid Charol (10-0) the middleweight division looks to be quite competitive over the next few years.

5- Rene DeVos 34-2-0 21 Antwerp, Belgium

WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION

Tommy Uren held the World Welterweight title twice in 1922 but was unable to defend it on either occassion as a total of 4 different men spent some time as champion this year. Uren, a 29 year old Australian who briefly held the World Title in 1920, reclaimed the belt in July of 1921 when he knocked out Joe Gans. He would successfully defend his title in October of 1921 against Ted 'Kid' Lewis before suffering a TKO loss to Johnny Basham in the 14th round of their title fight in January of this year in London.

The 32 year old Basham (53-11-2) lost the title in his first defense when the Welshman was knocked out by Mysterious Billy Smith in June. According to some reports Smith was 48 years old at the time of the fight with Basham and he regained the title he held for one bout in 1919. A Canadian, Smith decided to travel to Australia and take a big payday while giving Uren a title shot in August. The bout was never in doubt as Uren dominated an unprepared Smith and reclaimed the belt. Smith retired immediately after the fight with a 64-15-1 career record.

Uren than saw his career record dip to 36-5-2 when he lost a split decision to Irineo Flores in Melbourne at the end of Novemeber. The fight was considered an upset as Flores, a 23 year old native of the Phillippines, had not faced anyone of note prior to the title shot.

5- Jack Sparr 25-3-1 24 Duncan, Arizona

LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION

Benny Leonard remained the class of the Lightweight Division as he made 4 successful title defenses with only a March bout against Tommy O'Brien going the distance. In May, Leonard needed just 3 rounds to knockout Joe Benjamin while in September it took 10 rounds to score a TKO over Ever Hammer. He finished the year with a 6th round TKO of Solly Seeman in their November bout.

The 26 year old Leonard sports a record of 40-2-1 and has held the belt almost continuously since 1917 although he did get beat twice while champion. In May of 1919 he lost a split decision to Rocky Kansas but reclaimed the title the following January. He suffered a disqualification loss in a March 1920 defense against Joe Welling but got another shot 10 months later and after beating Jimmy Dundee he has held the title ever since.

With what little competition he does have in the division aging rapidly, it appears that Benny Leonard could be World Lightweight Champion for some years to come.

1922 COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECAP
ANOTHER PERFECT SEASON FOR CAL

For the third year in a row the University of California capped a perfect season with a Rose Bowl victory. After beating Notre Dame in the New Year's Day game each of the past two seasons the Bears hammered previously unbeaten West Virginia 56-21 in the season ending contest. In other Bowl games Missouri Valley Conference champ Nebraska improved to 9-0 with a 23-3 victory over Yale in the San Diego East-West Christmas Classic while Southern Conference winner Auburn dumped SWC champ Baylor 23-3 in the Dixie Bowl.

There was no season ending poll in 1922 in real life but for sim purposes here are the year end top 10.

1- California (10-0)
2- Nebraska (9-0)
3- Auburn (10-1)
4- Army (9-1)
5- Baylor (11-1)
6- West Virgina (9-1-1)
7- Yale (9-1-1)
8- Vanderbilt (7-0-2)
9- SMU (9-1)
10- Iowa (6-1)

In real life USC made it's Rose Bowl debut at the end of the 1922 season and the Trojans beat Penn State 14-3 in the big game. Losses to California and Idaho doomed the Trojans in my replay. Penn State was 8-0-2 but their schedule was not as impressive as West Virginia's in my replay. (By the way I am using the real schedule from 1922 for my replay.)

I found one real life power ranking for the top 10 teams and it looked like this.
Code:
		 W L T
1 Vanderbilt 8 0 1
2 Princeton 8 0 0

1922 SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR : BENNY LEONARD
Lightweight boxer Benny Leonard was named the receipient of the 1922 Athlete of the Year Award. Leonard successfully defended his World Title 4 times in 1922 to improve his career record to 40-2-1. He has been the dominant fighter in the lightweight division since he first claimed the World Title in 1917.

Others who received consideration included New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, Kansas Jayhawk center Jesse Mason and golfer Jim Barnes.

Ruth, the winner last year when he broke nearly every major league slugging record including home runs in a season, hit 52 homers and won his 5th straight American League MVP award. He also batted .351 with 145 rbi's.

Mason was named college basketball player of the year and was a First-Team All-America selection for the second year in a row as he led the Jayhawks to back to back National Championships.

Barnes led the PGA tour in money winnings for the second straight season. He finished tied for second in the PGA Championship and 4th in the US Open. He spent the entire year as #1 on the World Golf Rankings. It marked the second year in a row Barnes was a finalist for the Sportsman of the Year. He finished second last year after winning both the PGA and US Open.

I first began awarding sportsman of the year honours begining with my previous historical dynasty which ran from 1901 to 1917. This is the link to that thread if you are interested in checking it out. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=122371

1922-23 SEASON: NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE RECAP
The Ottawa Senators repeated as NHL regular season champions by finishing two points ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. The Senators were not as explosive an offense as last season but they survived on key goals from veterans Cy Denneny and Buck Boucher as well as outstanding goaltending from Clint Benedict.

Dissappointed at missing the playoffs last season, the Montreal Canadiens shook up their roster in the preseason by dealing veteran Newsy Lalonde to the Saskatoon Sheiks of the Western Canada Hockey League in exchange for 21 year old Aurel Joliat. Joliat helped the Habs to the playoffs by finishing 7th in league scoring but the offensive catalyst for the Canadiens was Bill Boucher. The 24 year old, who's brother Buck played for Ottawa, led the league with 30 goals.

I simmed the playoffs as a best-of-seven affair and it led to some exciting hockey. The series went the distance and included 3 overtime games before Ottawa won at home in game seven by a 3-1 score with ex-Canadien Newsy Lalonde scoring the game winner. The Senators had acquired Lalonde from Saskatoon late in the season.

STANLEY CUP CHALLENGE

Three leagues were involved in the Stanley Cup challenge in 1922-23. The series would be held out West and would begin with the Pacific Coast Hockey Association champion Vancouver Maroons taking on the NHL champion Ottawa Senators in a best-of-five series. The winner would play a best-of-three series against the Western Canada Hockey League champion Edmonton Eskimos to determine the Stanley Cup winner.

After a grueling 7 game series with Montreal the Ottawa Senators found themselves in tough against PCHA champion Vancouver. The Maroons took the series opener 4-1 but Ottawa rebounded with a 9-2 laugher in Game Two. Cy Denneny led the Sens with 4 goals and 2 assists in the contest. However Vancouver would take Game Three 2-1 to move within a victory of wrapping up the series.

It was at this point that the Senators played their best hockey, reeling off 4 straight wins to capture their fourth Stanley Cup in 5 years. Clint Benedict got back to back shutouts as Ottawa finished off Vancouver with a pair of 3-0 victories. Next came WCHL champion Edmonton and the Senators swept the two game series with the Eskimos winning 8-3 and 3-2. Cy Denneny scored 3 times in the first game and twice in the second including the winner with 10 minutes remaining in the third period.

1922-23 SEASON: COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECAP
As expected the UCLA Bruins, led by two returning All-Americans, dominated college basketball in 1922-23. The Bruins would lose just once all season en route to their first National Title as junior forward Derrick Finneman was named the College player of the year. The National Championship may be tough to defend as four of the five starters are gone. Three including 2-time All-American Colin Lowe have graduated while sophomore guard Charlie Pebbles decided to turn pro early. The good news for the Bruins is Finneman has decided to return for his senior season and while they may lack experience, the Bruins have plenty of talent.

Here is a look back at the tournament results and other notes on the 1922-23 college basketball season:

FEBRUARY 27, 1923
UCLA CLEAR NUMBER ONE ENTERING CONFERENCE TOURNEYS

Led by All-Americans Derrick Finneman (19.4 ppg, 12.9 rpg) and Colin Lowe (16.0 ppg, 3.8 apg) the UCLA Bruins are far and away the class of college basketball this season. Entering the conference tournaments the only blemish on UCLA's record through 31 games is a 77-60 loss to Stanford 2 weeks ago. Barring a surprising first round loss in the Pacific Coast Conference tournament the Bruins are a lock to be the top seed for the NCAA tournament.

The other 3 number one seeds are much tougher to predict as 7 or 8 teams could be qualified to claim one of the spots.

FINAL FOUR

As they were at the beginning of the season, the UCLA Bruins were clearly the class of the field entering the Final Four. The Bruins were the only number one seed to advance, as a pair of #1's (Indiana and Texas A&M) failed to win a game while the third (Kentucky) was done on the first weekend of the tournament.

The Bruins met Yale in the early game and controlled the contest throughout, winning 86-75. Yale never led after the first ten minutes as the Bulldogs were unable to contain UCLA's dynamic duo of Colin Love (31 points) and Derrick Finneman (24 points).

The second game was much tighter as a pair of 3 seeds in Davidson and Alabama hooked up. Bama led 38-32 at the break but Davidson, on the strength of a 13-1 run midway through the second half, rallied to win 71-67. Junior guard Matt Wallace, who has a shot at making the postseason All-America team, led the rally with 17 of his game high 22 points coming in the second half.

NATIONAL TITLE GAME

The title game was a blowout as UCLA completely dominated the contest in winning 72-46. Love and Finneman again led the way for the Bruins with 37 points between them but the big story was unheralded senior forward John Paul Fields hauling in a career high 17 rebounds in his final college game. With 2 All-Americans in Love and Finneman along with a great sophomore point guard in Charlie Pebbles, Fields rarely garned any attention in his career but he was named player of the game in the title contest.

1921-22 SEASON: PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE RECAP
For the third year in a row the Toronto Huskies had the best regular season record in the PBL. However, unlike last season when the Huskies won a league record 70 games and ran away with the conference, things were much tighter this time around as Syracuse finished just a game behind and Youngstown was 3 off the pace. The Huskies remain the favourites to win their second straight PBL Championship but they will have to get through the first round without two of their starters as guard Derrick Jones (19.5 ppg) and forward Nick Beck (13.6 ppg, 9.1 rpg) are both sidelined.

In a little more balanced Western Conference, Fort Wayne emerged as the number one seed. The Pistons finished atop the Midwest Division for the second time in 3 years.

1921-22 PBL PLAYOFF RECAPS
The big news in the opening round of the playoffs was the 8th seeded Pittsburgh Raiders 6 game victory over the Toronto Huskies. The Huskies were missing two of their starters but the Raiders won because their 3 young stars played so well. Center Jesse Mason, a two-time National Champion at Kansas, averaged 18.7 ppg and 11.2 rpg in the series while the backcourt duo of 3rd year man Jay Lee (from NYU) and second year pro Michael McMaster (Texas A&M) combined to average 31 points and 9 assists per game.

Each of the other 3 series in the Eastern Conference went the full seven games with a pair of lower seeds winning on the road. 7th seeded Washington knocked off number 2 Syracuse while the 6th seeded New York Pros beat Youngstown to through the conference playoffs wideopen. Number 4 seed Virginia was the only favourite to advance as the Squires beat Providence 104-89 in Game Seven.

All 4 of the higher seeds in the West advanced as Fort Wayne knocked off Denver in 6 games, #2 Chicago beat Cincinnati 4 straight while #3 St Louis bounced Detroit in 6. Kevin DeManby averaged 32.7 ppg to lead 4th seeded Houston past South Division rival New Orleans in 6 hard fought games.

Pittsburgh's cinderella run continued in the conference semi-finals when the Raiders swept Virginia in 4 straight games. The Raiders will face Washington in the Eastern Final after the Capitols ended New York's season in 6 games. While the Eastern Conference final will feature the 7th seed vs the 8th seed the Western Conference went a little closer to plan as #2 Chicago advanced after beating St Louis 96-94 in overtime of the 7th game. Houston knocked off top seeded Fort Wayne in 4 games as Kevin DeManby continued his red-hot play.

CONFERENCE FINALS
Pittsburgh became the most unlikely of conference champions with a 5 game victory over Washington. The Raiders reach the PBL Finals despite finishing 4 games under .500 during the regular season. Pittsburgh's opponent in the finals will be the Chicago Bruins. The Bruins found a way to shut down Kevin DeManby and beat Houston in 6 games.

PBL CHAMPIONSHIP
Two first time entrants will meet in the third PBL championship with Chicago having to be an overwhelming favourite. The Bruins finished the regular season with the second best record in the Western Conference (55-27) and were 16 games ahead of Pittsburgh. However, the Raiders did manage a split of their 2 games with the Bruins this season and their young stars appear to be peaking at just the right time.

GAME 1- Chicago took the opener on homecourt easily with a 97-82 victory. Veterans Sherman Cole and Luke Hightower each scored 21 points to lead the Bruins. Second year guard Michael McMaster of Pittsburgh was held to just two points as he made just 1 of 10 field goal attempts.

GAME 2 - Chicago goes up 2-0 in the series after hanging on for an 84-82 victory. McMaster improved to 13 points in the game and Jay Lee had 21 for Pittsburgh but center Jesse Mason got into foul trouble early and finished with just 5 points and only 5 rebounds - the first time he did not hit double-figures in rebounds since the second round of the playoffs. Forward Sherman Cole led the Bruins with 19 points.

GAME 3 - Homecourt was no help for Pittsburgh as the Raiders lost 84-73 to fall behind 3 games to none in the best of seven final. A lack of depth hurt the Raiders this time as only the big three of Mason (13 points), McMaster (15 points) and Lee (17 points) managed to reach doublefigures in scoring. Chicago got plenty of points of the bench and completely dominated the game.

GAME 4 - The Cinderella Raiders held on to the glass slipper for at least one more day with an impressive 111-103 victory in Game 4. Jay Lee had 26 points while Jesse Mason scored 18 and added 14 rebounds to lead Pittsburgh. Just as important was Jonathan Wesley and Shawn Caldwell combined for 23 off of the bench. Chicago guard Luke Hightower led both teams with 29 points.

GAME 5 - Can the Raiders mount a miracle comeback? Pittsburgh got it's second straight win with a 97-90 victory in Game 5. Mason had 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Raiders who had 5 players score in double figures. The Chicago loss put a damper on a season best 30 point performance from power forward Charles Martin.

GAME 6 - Back in Chicago the Bruins put an end to Pittsburgh's improbable run, winning the PBL Championship with a 114-93 victory to take the series 4 games to two. Guard Joey Pugh scored 32 points while Sherman Cole added 25 for the Bruins who in the end had just too many weapons for Pittsburgh to defend. The young Raider backcourt of Michael McMaster and Jay Lee each scored 20 points in the game. Rookie center Jesse Mason was held to 8 points as he once again got into foul trouble early.

1923 PBL DRAFT NOTES
COUGARS LOOK TO LOCAL STAR TO REVIVE TEAM

The Carolina Cougars have a .369 winning percentage over 3 seasons in the PBL but they are hoping a local product can improve the club's fortunes. Carolina drafted forward Paul Lawson from the University of North Carolina first overall in the 1923 PBL college draft. Lawson was a two-time ACC defensive player of the year but he comes with a big question mark after playing just 19 games as a senior before being sidelined with a torn achillies. He will miss summer league action but is expected to be ready to go by training camp. Lawson average 16.4 ppg and 7.8 rpg prior to his injury.

It was 1-2 for the Tar Heels as Rochester followed by selecting Darrell Sanders second. Like Lawson, Sanders comes with a big question mark. His is not physical though as he missed his entire senior season due to academic troubles. Sanders did average 11.8 ppg and 8.1 rpg as a junior.

The Minneapolis Lakers grabbed underclassman Charlie Pebbles from the National Champion UCLA Bruins third. The sophomore played a huge role down the stretch helping the Bruins to a 39-1 record. Rounding out the top 5 were center Jefferson Harley from the University of San Francisco to the Atlanta Crackers while the Oklahoma City Drillers grabbed Alabama forward Chis Thomas 5th. Harley may turn out to be the gem of the draft. He was a second team All-America selection as a junior and a key component on a National Champion as a freshman.

UCLA had four players selected in the first round. In addition to Pebbles, Milwaukee got two-time All-American guard Colin Lowe with the 9th pick, Denver selected John Paul Fields 15th and Youngstown grabbed Lance Reyes at the 28th spot.

1923 INDIANAPOLIS 500
REAL LIFE WINNER MILTON WINS SIM INDY RACE
For the second year in a row but just the 4th time in 11 races the simulation winner at the Indianapolis 500 was the same person who won the event in real life. In this case it was Minnesota native Tommy Milton who took the checkered flag. Milton led wire to wire to win his first Indianapolis 500 in 5 attempts.

Jimmy Murphy, who won the sim event last season, finished second this time around. In real life Murphy finished third in this year's event.
