RUTH TRADED TO YANKS

Babe Ruth is now a member of the New York Yankees after the Boston Red Sox dealt the disgruntled slugger to the Bronx in exchange for two players and a boatload of cash. Heading to Boston are a pair of Yankee starters in outfielder Curt Walker and first baseman Al Scheer along with $130,000 cash.

Ruth, who leads the American League in all three triple crown categories, demanded a trade following a dugout brawl with teammates Harry Hooper and Tris Speaker. Ruth (.423,20,57) is on pace to shatter his own single-season homerun record of 42 set last season when he led the Red Sox to a World Series championship.

The 32 year old Scheer (.276,1,19) will have the unenviable job of replacing Ruth at first base for the Red Sox. An 8 year veteran who also played for Brooklyn, Scheer has a career batting average of .263 and won 3 gold gloves while patrolling the outfield with the Dodgers.

Walker (.318,3,37) is just 24 years old and will likely be the Red Sox fourth outfielder after starting all of last season in the New York outfield. He hit .253 in 116 games last year and has a career .266 batting average in 185 major league games.

The Yankees are tied for fifth in the American League, 6 games below .500 after finishing dead last a year ago. There is no question New York will be much improved with Ruth in the lineup. The big question is will the Red Sox still be the dominant team in the American League without Ruth's bat. Losing Babe Ruth will take a huge bite out of any lineup but the Red Sox are the one team that may be talented enough to still win a pennant even without their best hitter.

Paul Sims, the 29 year old American who put on an amazing performance at Shawnee two weeks ago, had another strong week as he finished third.

New York is a city that's going to eat Babe Ruth alive, mark my words.

Lol. It will be interesting to see what happens to Boston. They still have plenty of talent and remain the favourites at least this year. The Yanks have absolutely zero pitching.

I had been toying with the idea of dealing Ruth to the Yankees each of the past two off-seasons but just couldn't pull the trigger. It just seemed that since I was assigning players to their original teams that he should be in pinstripes.

I noticed morale was down for several Boston players including Harry Hooper and then when I read in the league news that Ruth injured his hand in fight I decided it would be an in-team brawl and that should be the time to move him.

That was the first and only time I have stepped in and altered the game development. I am back to being a hands off commissioner watching this universe unfold. We will have to see what happens to the Yanks and Red Sox over the rest of the decade.

RUTH HITS HOMER #21 BUT YANKS LOSE IN HIS DEBUT

Babe Ruth hit his 21st homerun of the season but it wasn't enough to help the Yankees win in his pinstripe debut. New York was hammered 12-2 by the visiting St Louis Browns but most Yankee fans did not seem to care. They were more interested in discussing the towering homerun hit by the newest Yankee. Ruth also singled in the game and drove in both New York runs.

Ruth was traded by Boston to the Yankees following a dugout brawl with teammates last week. Boston finally got a victory after dropping 3 straight games since Ruth left the team. The Red Sox pounded Cleveland 11-4.

Ruth will play in Boston for the first time as a member of the visiting team in two weeks when the Yankees head to Fenway for a 4 game series.

YOUNGSTOWN FORCES 7TH GAME IN PBA CHAMPIONSHIP

Homecourt was an advantage this time for the Youngstown Bears as the Eastern Conference champions scored a 112-90 victory over the Detroit Eagles. The Youngstown win, it's first at home after dropping the opening 2 games of the series, prevented Detroit from clinching. The first PBA title trophy will be handed out tomorrow night as the series is now deadlocked at 3 wins apiece.

Youngstown had 3 players share most of the offensive load. Forwards Mark Booker and Matt Green each had 25 points will guard Rash Hamilton chipped in with 21. Like he has done all series guard Andre Tyler was Detroit's scoring leader with 24 points.

DETROIT CROWNED PBA CHAMPIONS

The Detroit Eagles claimed the first PBA Championship with a 98-87 road victory over Youngstown in the 7th and deciding game of the finals. Playoff MVP Andre Tyler led Detroit with 23 points while forward Sil Nesta added 16.

The Eagles are unlikely champions as they finished just 42-40 in the regular season and were the 8th and final seed from the Western Conference. Youngstown was the second seed in the East.

xO'LOUGHLIN WINS FINAL US OPEN TUNE-UP

Martin O'Loughlin was the only golfer to finish under par in the New York State Open and he won the event against some pretty stiff competition. With the United States Open just a week away most of the PGA Tour's top golfers competed at the Onondaga Lake Park course including Bobby xJones, who tied with Olin xDutra for second place.

THREE WAY TIE ATOP US OPEN LEADERBOARD

There is a three-way tie for the lead after first round action at the United States Open Golf Tournament. A pair of Americans, 33 year old Eddie xLoos and 29 year old Jaden Carpenter, along with Ireland's Callum O'Grady lead the way after each shot a 3 under par 67 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Defending US Open champion Willie xMacFarlane is just 3 shots off the pace, along with last year's PGA winner Walter Hagen. The other reigning major winner, British Open champ Jimmy xHines, shot 3 over par and trails by 6 strokes.

This is the 25th United States Open. The event began in 1895 but was not held in 1917 or 1918 due to World War I. The real life winner was Jim Barnes, who shot 9 over par and beat Hagen and Fred McLeod by 9 strokes. xBarnes sits at 4 over in the sim after opening round action.

YOUNG IRISHMAN LEADS WAY AT US OPEN

21 year old Callum O'Grady is the unlikely leader midway through the United States Open. O'Grady is playing in his first major tournament. He played on the PGA Tour last year and won just $464 while rarely making the cut. However, this season he returned to Ireland to play on the European tour where he did have a strong start and won both the Australian and French Opens.

O'Grady opened Thursday with a 3 under par 67 to share the lead and after carding a 69 yesterday he has sole possession of first place, 2 strokes ahead of Matt xDuffy. There are some veterans in contention, most notably defending US Open champion Willie xMacFarlane, who shot even par 70 for the second straight day.

US OPEN PLAY CONTINUES

When the dust settled there were some big changes on the leaderboard for the 25th United States Open. Some golfers such as Jerry xTravers, who shot 4 under par 66, moved up the leaderboard but the trend was in the opposite direction led by second round leader Callum O'Grady blowing up by shooting 79 and defending champion Willie xMacFarlane taking himself out of contention with a 6 over par 76.

American Matt xDuffy is the leader with 18 homes to play. xDuffy shot even par yesterday after carding a 69 in each of the opening two days of the event. At 2 under par he holds a 2 stroke lead on xTravers and 3 on Jim xBarnes. It appears the event will go to one of those three men as Phil xHesler and Fred xHerd are 6 strokes off the pace in 4th place.

I did the same thing with my current HOB replay, the only trade I did to alter the teams myself. The thing to watch out for though is Babe's position of 1B. After about 5 seasons of not seeing Lou Gehrig in the leaderboards I looked him up and he was toiling as a bench player backing up Ruth at 1B. I had to manually add OF ratings for Ruth just so the AI would move him and put Gehrig in the lineup, too. Unfortunately, this was 1930 and the glory days of a Ruth/Gehrig combo were running out.

RUTH HOMERS IN RETURN TO FENWAY

Babe Ruth hit his major league leading 27th homerun but it was not enough for the New York Yankees to beat Ruth's old team as Boston won 5-2. Ruth hit a solo shot over the Green Monster in the 5th inning off of Sailor Stroud to cut Boston's lead at the time to 3-2. It was Ruth's first game in Fenway since being traded from the Red Sox following a brawl with teammates last month.

While Ruth's presence in the lineup has certainly made New York a much stronger team it has not translated to success in the league standings. The Yankees are 7-11 since Ruth joined the squad in a trade with Boston but it is the Yankee pitching staff that deserves most of the blame. New York has allowed more runs against than any other team in the American League. Boston, on the other hand, continues to roll right along even without Ruth's bat. The Red Sox have won 13 of 17 games since the deal was made. Boston now holds a 6 game lead on second place Detroit atop the American League standings.

xBARNES FOLLOWS UP US OPEN WITH WIN AT BRAE BURN

For the second week in a row Jim xBarnes is the winner of the PGA stop. Last week was much more prestigous when xBarnes took home the US Open title but he was quite happy with a win in the Massachusetts Open this week. xBarnes finished a stroke ahead of Archie xLoeffler and 2 up on Fred xHerd. xHerd also finished third at last week's US Open.

The two victories vault the 28 year old xBarnes into the World number one ranking, just ahead of Walter xHagen. xHerd is fourth behind European Tour veteran Alec xRoss. xBarnes also moves to the top of the PGA money winner list with $4,592 in earnings this season. xHagen is second at $3,666.

AGGIES GO 1-2 IN PBA DRAFT

As expected the two freshman guards from Texas A&M were selected first and second in the Professional Basketball Association draft. The Pittsburgh Raiders, who won just 15 of their 82 games last season, started the draft by taking shooting guard Michael McMaster while Cleveland followed up by selecting his backcourt make Mark Bass.

The first college senior selected was point guard Shaun Boddicker of Mississippi, who went third to Atlanta. Milwaukee made it four straight guards to start the draft when the All-Stars selected Reece Cable from Illinois.

College player of the year Brian Hawkins of USC was selected 14th by Denver. Sam Hightower from the University of San Francisco and Maryland's Dwayne Taylor were the other first team All-Americans to be drafted. Hightower went to the Brooklyn Gothams with the 11th pick while Taylor was selected 29th by the Houston Mavericks.

WHITE SOX DELIVER MAILS TO CUBS

The Chicago White Sox have sent pitcher Duster Mails to the cross-town Cubs in exchange for outfielder Babe Twombley. Mails was leading the American League in strikeouts with 51 at the time of the deal. The 26 year old righthander was 6-8 with a 5.98 era for the White Sox this season. He is 23-36 in a 6 year career that also included a stop in Brooklyn. The Cubs made the move because Phil Douglas (7-2, 2.24) suffered a hand injury and will be out of action for a month.

The 25 year old Twombley is being counted on to add some offense to the White Sox. He was batting .376 in part time duty for the Cubs.

What's next Tiger Fan what will you agree on in order to switch to Historictional......

- Ancestor Sign-ups (Starting in 1922) Including High School Teenagers starting in 1970.
- Expansion Voting (Starting in 1942-1945) First Tiger Fan picks 5-10 teams from Minor League Teams that not have a Major League Team, then the users from the forum will suggest Created Teams for the Expansion Vote.
- Female Baseball Players (Starting in 1943 with the AAGPBL) and possibly have the first Female player to play baseball. (And Hopefully will get a Miss USA and Miss Teen USA Team.)
- International Baseball (Starting in 1936 with the Japan League)
- Using the NFL with Total Pro Football instead of Second and team (Starting in 1923) If Agreed what are the teams?

Will you agree Tiger Fan?

Don't think any of those will happen. The two closest to consideration would be ancestor sign-up and using TPF. I decided against ancestor signup becuase 1)- I have too much other stuff to track already and 2)-others have done it and done it quite well on this board. As for using TPF and BBCF I briefly considered it but with no way to get my college stars to the pro league I thought staying closer to historical made more sense.

Btw, I have already simmed the NFL from 1950-2006 using Second and Ten and there were some great NFL championship and Super Bowl games.

PLENTY OF FIREWORKS AS DEMPSEY WINS AGAIN

Amistd Independance Day celebrations, World Heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey unloaded with plenty of fireworks of his own. The World Heavyweight Champion beat challenger Fred Fulton badly in a bout at Madison Square Garden. Fulton was handpicked as an easy tuneup fight for Dempsey but the challenger deserves a lot of credit for being one of the few men to survive the entire 15 rounds with Dempsey. Fulton, 40-7, was also given a title shot a few years back against then-champ Harry Wills.

WALLACE WINS CANADIAN OPEN

American Alex Wallace notched his second PGA win of the season after winnning the Canadian Open by 2 strokes over Jack xBurgess. Very few of the top professionals elected to compete as most decided to board a boat across the Atlantic a little early in order to get some practice rounds in England before the British Open. This year's Open will be held at St Andrews from July 19-21.

EDDIE COLLINS COLLECTS CAREER HIT 2000

Philadelphia Athletics infielder Eddie Collins became the 32nd member of the 2000 hit club after singling in a 6-5 loss to Detroit. The 34 year old is in his 16th major league season, all with the A's and has a .298 career batting average. This seeason he his hitting .311 with 5 homers and 47 rbi's. He has 3 World Series rings from his time with the A's.

The all-time career hit leader is Jesse Burkett with 3030. Detroit's Ty Cobb is the top active player with 2922.

BRITISH OPEN SET TO START AT ST ANDREWS

For the 12th time St Andrews will play host to the British Open. Most of the top American tour golfers have made the trip across the Atlantic so this should prove to be one of the most competitive Opens ever staged.

Among the favourites are 1919 and 1920 PGA champion Walter xHagen, PGA tour money leader Jim xBanres and Euro tour vets Alec xRoss and Harry xVardon. Youngsters who could make some noise include Americans Bobby xJones and Gene xSarazen. The defending champion, American Jimmy xHines who won at Royal Cinque Ports last year, will also be back.

O'DOWD BEATS SMITH IN REMATCH

After winning an unanimous decision over Jeff Smith in January to reclaim the World Middleweight Title, Mike O'Dowd once again defeated Smith in the rematch. O'Dowd, fighting before a hometown crowd in St. Paul, Minnesota, won by technical knockout in the 14th round. The 26 year old's professional record now stands at 35-4-4. Smith falls to 42-8-1 and it appears unlikely the 30 year old will get another title shot.

22 GOLFERS WITHIN 2 STROKES OF LEAD AFTER OPENING ROUND AT ST ANDREWS

Calm conditions were the order of the day on Thursday at St. Andrews and as a result 33 of the 120 entrants in the British Open broke par. The tournament is extremely tight as 7 golfers share the opening round lead at 4 under par while another 8 including 21 year old American Bobby xJones are just one stroke back.

Scores may skyrocket tomorrow as the early forecast is for extremely brisk winds.

MOODY KNOCKS OUT O'BRIEN FOR LHW TITLE

Frank Moody is the new World Lightheavyweight champion after he knocked out Philadelphia Jack O'Brien in the 15th round of their title bout in London. The bout was close throughout but the 42 year old O'Brien clearly ran out of gas in the final couple of rounds.

Moody, a 21 year old Welshman, improves to 39-3-1 after claiming the World Title in his first shot at the belt. O'Brien falls to 61-12-6 with the loss and is expected to announce his retirement soon. He held the World Lightheavyweight Title from 1911-1916 and again the past 6 months after beating Fay Keiser.

DEFENDING CHAMP xHINES CO-LEADER MIDWAY THRU OPEN

Perhaps Jimmy xHines should consider playing on the European PGA Tour full-time. He has yet to win an event in North America but is in position to claim the British Open title for the second straight year.

xHines, a 21 year old from New York state, shot the best round of the day at 5 under par 67. That lowers his score to 7 under and ties him with fellow American Page xHufty for the lead. In real life Hines played in 18 majors but never finished higher than 7th. He competed in 8 US Opens and 10 Masters tournaments but never played in the British Open.

Just at first glance, it looks like everybody struggled in that third round, TF. Walter and Willie appeared to have the most trouble though! I'm still holding out hope that Bobby Jones will make a run!

Also, did Dempsey have Arliss Michaels set him up with Tomato Khan?

xLEACH WINS BRITISH OPEN IN PLAYOFF AFTER WILD FINISH

A wet, windy day made for extremely difficult playing conditions but it also provided one of the most dramatic finishes to major a tournament in recent memory. Only Carl xGiehler managed to break par with a 1 under 71 as scores over 78 were more the norm on this day. Defending British Open champion Jimmy xHines exploded and shot an 8 over par 80 but it was still good enough to get him into a 4 way playoff for the title.

xHines would join Bill xLeach, Matt xDuffy and Fred xHerd in the playoff. Young American Bobby xJones made a tremendous charge, starting the day 10 strokes off the pace, but finished 2 back of the leaders.

xLeach, who hails from Philadelphia, never played in the British Open in real life. He did make 3 appearances in the US Open in the 1920's with his best finish coming in 1928 when he was 6th. In the real 1921 British Open Jock Hutchinson became the first non-British champion when he beat British amateur Roger Wethered in a 36-hole playoff by 9 strokes. Hutchinson missed the cut in the sim while Wethered tied for 34th.

JOE GANS CAREER COMES TO END WITH LOSS TO UREN

Joe Gans, who at age 46 shocked the boxing world in May by beating Jimmy Fryer for the World Welterweight Title, has announced his retirement after he was knocked out in the first round of his title defense against Tommy Uren. The 28 year old Australian was all over Gans right from the start and the veteran looked all of his 46 years of age.

Gans retires with a 70-16-6 career record. He was World Lightweight champion from 1902-1906 and held the Welterweight Title in 1910-1911 as well as for the last 3 months.

Uren, 31-3-2, also briefly held the Welterweight title last year before losing to Fryer in August.

SENATORS ACQUIRE LEONARD FROM DETROIT

The Washington Senators have picked up pitcher Dutch Leonard from Detroit in a deal just before baseball's trade deadline. The Tigers get shortstop Tillie Shafer in return.

Leonard was among the league leaders in both strikeouts and earned run average. The 29 year old is 9-3 with a 3.46 era this season. In 9 years he has a career record of 111-99. Shafer was hitting .283 for the Sens at the time of the deal. The 32 year old infielder has played over 1500 games and is a career .274 hitter.

In a seperate trade the Senators filled the hole at shortstop by acquiring Russ Wrightstone from the Phillies. The 28 year old Wrightstone was hitting .294 with 8 homers and 57 rbi's this season. The Phillies add Rasty Wright to their woeful pitching staff in the deal. Wright is 25 years old and was 7-8 with a 5.11 era.

LEW TENDLER HOLDS LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMP LEONARD TO DRAW

Top contender Lew Tendler fought the fight of his life but it still wasn't good enough to beat World Lightweight Champion Benny Leonard. The bout ended in a draw but only after Leonard floored the challenger with 30 seconds remaining in the 15th and final round. Had Leonard not won the 15th 10-8 for the knockdown on all 3 judges cards we would be talking about a new lightweight champion today.

With the draw Leonard retains the title but has promised Tendler a rematch in October.

TIGERS LOSE HEILMANN FOR REST OF SEASON

The Detroit Tigers slim hopes of challenging the Boston Red Sox for the American League crown to a huge hit with news that second baseman Harry Heilmann will likely miss the rest of the season. The 27 year old Heilmann (.327,17,101) had been the Tigers best offensive threat this season.

Detroit will be forced to move shortstop Tillie Shafer (.269,4,50) to second to fill in for Heilmann. Donie Bush (.252,0,43), who had lost his starting job when the Tigers acquired Shafer from Washington last month, will go back in the lineup at short.

US OPEN CHAMP xBARNES CO-LEADER AFTER DAY 1 OF PGA

Long Jim xBarnes is one of 4 golfers tied for the lead after the opening round of the PGA Championships at Inwood Country Club on Long Island. xBarnes, who won the US Open earlier this year, shot an even par 71 and shares the lead with Taylor Barnes (no relation), Craig xWood and Johnny xGolden. Canada's Logan Atwood is just one stroke back. Atwood was among the co-leaders after the opening round of last month's British Open but he quickly faded and finished 36th.

COURSE IS WINNING MIDWAY THROUGH PGA

Inwood Country Club on Long Island has proven to be extremely difficult midway through the PGA championships. After 36 holes only one golfer, England's Taylor Barnes, has managed to meet par. Barnes carded back to back even par 71's over the first two days.

Johnny xGolden and Long Jim xBarnes both shot 74 yesterday and trail Taylor Barnes by 3 strokes. Craig xWood, who was the co-leader with the 2 Barnes' and xGolden after round one, shot a 77 and now trails by 6 strokes. Only American Fred xBaroni, with a 1 under 70, managed to break par yesterday. xBaroni shot a 77 on Thursday and is in 4th place 5 strokes behind Taylor Barnes.

LONG JIM xBARNES A DAY AWAY FROM SECOND MAJOR WIN OF THE YEAR

On a day when scores in the high 70's were the norm, England's Long Jim xBarnes carded a 3 over par 73 and enjoys a 3 stroke lead in the PGA Championship with 18 holes to play. xBarnes, who won the US Open in June, is at plus 5. The wind was blowing quite heavily at Inwood Country Club yesterday and when you couple that with the narrow fairways and deep rough it is easy to see why most golfers saw their scores skyrocket.

xBarnes is 3 strokes ahead of Fred xBaroni, Taylor Barnes and Craig xWood. Johnny xGolden and Billy xBurke are 5 back but still have an outside chance because windy conditions are expected again today.

JIM xBARNES WINS ANOTHER MAJOR

Long Jim xBarnes won his second major golf tournament of the summer by taking a 4 stroke victory in the PGA Championship. The English-born xBarnes, who is a regular on the American PGA tour, won the United States Open in June. Only a 19th place finish in the British Open prevented xBarnes from sweeping all 3 majors.

In real life Barnes, who was born in England but raised in the United States, won the first two PGA championships in 1916 and 1919 (there was no event in 1917 or 1918 due to WWI) as well as the 1921 US Open. He would also win the British Open in 1925. In real life Walter Hagen beat Barnes in the 36 hole final of the 1921 PGA, 3 and 2. It was a match-play event back then.

RUTH CRANKS HOMER #50

Babe Ruth became the first player to hit 50 homeruns in a season when he took Wilbur Cooper deep in the 5th inning of the New York Yankees 8-2 victory over the Indians in Cleveland. Ruth, who surpassed his own major league record by hitting his 43rd homer earlier in the month, still has over a month remaining in the season and may make a run at 60.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - AUGUST RECAP
ALL SIGNS POINT TO RED SOX-GIANTS SERIES REMATCH

With a month remaining in the regular season the odds seem good that the World Series participants will be a repeat of last season when the Boston Red Sox swept the New York Giants in 4 games. The Giants enjoy a 6.5 game lead on second place Chicago atop the National League while in the junior circuit the Red Sox are 4 ahead of Cleveland and 6.5 up on the Philadelphia Athletics.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - FINAL STANDINGS
RECORD SETTING YEAR FOR RUTH

It was an eventful year for Babe Ruth. After getting into a brawl with teammates that precipitated a trade from Boston to the New York Yankees Ruth went on to hit 61 home runs, smashing his own record of 42 set last year. The Bambino also set major league single season marks for slugging percentage (.548), total bases (442), walks (175) and rbi's (175).

Cleveland rookie Riggs Stephenson also made his mark on the record books. The 23 year old infielder hit .402, which is the highest single season mark since the American League was formed in 1901. Stephenson joins Joe Jackson (.400 in 1911) as the only major leaguers in the modern era to hit .400 in a season.

The New York Giants ran away with the National League to claim their 3rd straight pennant while in the American League even the absence of Ruth did not deter the Red Sox from a second straight berth in the World Series.

GIANTS TAKE GAME 1 1-0 IN 10 INNINGS

After getting swept in the World Series by Boston last year the New York Giants finally managed to beat the Boston Red Sox but it took them 10 innings to do so. Frankie Frisch (.350,8,71) hit a solo homer with 2 out in the bottom of the 10th off of Boston reliever Benn Karr to score the game's only run in a 1-0 New York victory.

Rosy Ryan (17-5, 4.42) went the distance allowing just 4 hits for the victory while Karr took the loss in relief of Larry Brenton (11-10, 4.81).

RED SOX EVEN SERIES ON MAYS' 4-HITTER

Carl Mays allowed just 4 New York hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the Giants 2-1 at the Polo Grounds to even the World Series at 1 game apiece. Mays (18-10, 4.47) allowed a first inning triple to Earl Smith (.361,24,116), who scored on a sacrifice fly for the Giants only run. Boston got an unearned run to even things up in the 4th inning and won the game on an rbi single off the bat of Steve O'Neill (.306,5,86) in the top of the ninth.

Outfielders Ross Youngs and Hack Miller combined for 7 hits, 3 rbi's and 3 runs to carry the New York Giants past Boston 6-3 at Fenway Park in Game Three of the World Series. The Giants now lead the series 2 games to one. Youngs (.353,8,101) had 4 hits including a triple while Miller (.389,12,55) drove in 2 and scored twice. Waite Hoyt (22-10, 3.94) allowed just 5 hits for the win. Hod Eller (16-15, 4.49) went the distance in the loss.

GIANTS HAMMER RED SOX 8-2 TO TAKE 3-1 SERIES LEAD

Happy Felsch homered twice and Hack Miller had 5 hits to pace the New York Giants past Boston 8-2 in Game Four of the World Series. The victory gives the Giants a commanding 3 games to one lead and they can wrap up the series with a win in Boston today.

Rosy Ryan got his second win of the series after allowing 6 Boston hits in 8 innings of work. Lynn Brenton took the loss.

DEMPSEY FLOORS JOHN JOHNSON IN THE FIRST

Jack Dempsey finished his night's work in just over 2 minutes as he floored big John Lester Johnson three times in the opening round of their title fight in Philadelphia. The final knockdown, on a vicious combination, was one that Johnson was unable to recover from. Johnson drops to 39-9-3 with the loss while the World Champion runs his record to 42-1.

LEONARD KO'S CHALLENGER TENDLER

World Lightweight champion Benny Leonard retained his title with a 13th round knockout of challenger Lew Tendler. The knockout comes in a rematch of their title from from July which ended in a draw after the challenger fought arguably the best fight of his career.

This time Leonard wore Tendler down and began to carry the fight in the later rounds. Near the end of the 12th round Tendler appeared to be out on his feet but the referee allowed the fight to continue. The Philadelphia native regrouped slightly in his corner before the 13th but when Leonard came out attacking and reigned a volley of punches on Tendler it was just a matter of time before the challenger went down. That happened 1:20 into the round when Leonard landed a short, concussive uppercut to the chin of Tendler sending him to the canvas.

Leonard is 35-2-1 after the victory while Tendler falls to 32-6-5.

UREN RETAINS WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

Australian native Tommy Uren scored an unanimous decision over Ted 'Kid' Lewis in his first defense since beating Joe Gans to claim the crown. The fight was very close through 10 rounds but Uren clearly dominated over the final five to convince the judges to give him the title despite fighting in Lewis' hometown of London, England.

ARKANSAS LANDS TOP COLLEGE HOOPS RECRUIT

The Arkansas Razorbacks pulled off a major college basketball recruiting coup when they managed to get the nation's top ranked prospect to sign with them. Jerry Gurley, a 6'10" center from Booker T Washington High School in Atlanta, decided on Arkansas over Georgia and North Carolina. Gurley averaged 26.7 ppg and 17.6 rpg as a junior in high school last season.

Georgia did get a consolation prize when the Bulldogs stole Jarion Owens out of the Razorbacks backyard. Owens, a 6'3" shooting guard from Lavaca, Arkansas, is the number two ranked prospect.

Here is the status on the top ten recruits.

MOODY HANGS ON TO LHW BELT WITH DRAW

Frank Moody retained the World Lightheavyweight title but he had to scramble to do so as a late comeback allowed him to earn a draw with challenger Mike McTigue In Liverpool, England. Moody looked disinterested in the early rounds as McTigue built a strong lead. Finally late in the 11th round Moody began to look like a champion and won the final four rounds including the 15th when he knocked McTigue down twice.

Despite the late rally by Moody one judge had the challenger winning 144-140, another scored the bout 143-141 for Moody while the third had the fight even at 142-142. The 21 year old Moody has now won 40 fights against 3 losses and a draw.

The 29 year old McTigue was born in Ireland but fights out of New York City. His record dips to 38-4-2. McTigue held the World Title in this division for one defense after winning the belt when Kid Norfolk was disqualified from their bout in August of last year.

DEFENDING CHAMPION JAYHAWKS PRESEASON NUMBER ONE

Kansas comes into the 1921 season as the #1 ranked team in the country. Sophomore center Jesse Mason is the man to watch and the Jayhawks hopes of repeating as National Champion ride squarely on his shoulders. Will Kansas be able to handle the pressure of being defending NCAA champs when every team they play will be treating a contest with Kansas as their National Title game?

The Jayhawks are certainly not the only contenders for cutting down the nets next April. Kentucky, UCLA, Georgia and North Carolina are all legitimate threats to win it all.

The season kicks off this week with two preseason tournaments: the Coaches Classic and the Preseason NIT tournament. In the Coaches Classic, New York University is the top seed and faces a first round match-up against Colgate. Kansas is the favourite in the Preseason NIT Tournament but first they will have to get by Furman.

HOLY CROSS LOOKS TO CHALLENGE FOR BIG TEN TITLE
The Big Ten has always been very competitive but it will be even more so this year with the addition of a twelfth team. Holy Cross is ranked 12th in the nation and has as good a shot as anyone of winning the conference title. Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota are also Big Ten contenders.

MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMP O'DOWD HAS LITTLE TROUBLE WITH BORRELL

In what was designed simply to be an easy payday, World Middleweight Champion Mike O'Dowd had no trouble taking an unanimous decision victory against Philadelphia native Joe Borrell in the challenger's hometown.

It was the first and most likely last title shot Borrell will ever get. The 29 year old does have a decent 44-12 record but has fashioned it mainly by taking on club fighters. Borrell does deserve credit for going the distance against O'Dowd despite being badly out boxed.

JAYHAWKS SURVIVE PRESEASON NIT

Outstanding competition highlighted the preseason NIT Tournament as five of the top six teams in the preseason rankings participated. In the end it was preseason number one Kansas that prevailed with a 71-69 squeker over San Francisco in the title game. The Jayhawks also learned they can win without the big man in the middle as sophomore center Jesse Mason was limited to just 7 points in 22 minutes because of foul troubles. Junior guard Lars George stepped up and led the way for Kansas in the win over preseason #6 San Francisco. George had 25 points and 7 rebounds.

To get to the finals Kansas beat #2 Kentucky 75-64 in the semi-finals. That game belonged to Mason as the center had 16 points and 16 boards. In the quarterfinals Kansas beat 9th ranked Alabama 68-54 after hammering Furman 73-42 in the opening game.

San Francisco also had a tough road to the finals beating #12 Holy Cross, #4 Georgia and Villanova. The most exciting game of the tournament, aside from the championship contest, had to be Georgia's triple overtime 84-81 victory over 5th ranked North Carolina.

In the other preseason tournament, UCLA won the Coaches Classic with an 83-67 win over South Carolina in the title game. Notre Dame and New York University were the semi-finalists.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP DEMPSEY WINS IN EUROPE

Call it a working vacation for Heavyweight Champ Jack Dempsey after he scored an easy 3rd round knockout victory over someone by the name of Daan Holtkamp in the Netherlands. The bout was not sanctioned as a world title fight but Dempsey does improve to 43-1 with 30 knockouts in his career. Holtkamp is a journeyman with a 30-27 career mark.

On the undercard lightheavyweight challenger Gene Tunney improved his record to 35-3 with an 11th round TKO of Arthur Tracy. The 24 year old Tunney looks to be the strongest fighter in the lightheavyweight division and should be in line for a title shot next year.

The Lightheavyweight Division was thrown into turmoil when World Champion Frank Moody was knocked out in the 4th round of a non-title match with Charlie Nashert(14-4) on the same card. Moody looked out of shape and was clearly not ready for the bout which was to be a tune-up for his title defense next month against Bob Sweeney.

FLOWERS' TITLE HOPES WILT
In other boxing news, Tiger Flowers hopes of challenging Mike O'Dowd for the World Middleweight title suffered a setback when the 26 year old Georgia native suffered a first round knockout in his bout with Silent Martin in New York. The loss drops Flowers record to 21-3 and probably cost him a February title shot.

Instead, O'Dowd will likely face Harry Greb. The 27 year old Greb has recorded 10 straight knockouts and is 47-3-2 for his career. Greb's most recent victim was Terry Mitchell on the same card as the Flowers-Martin tilt.

KANSAS REMAINS PERFECT IN COLLEGE HOOPS

The Kansas Jayhawks improved to 11-0 with an 80-36 pounding of 11th ranked Notre Dame. After winning the preseason NIT, the Jayhawks have dominated their non-conference schedule so far. Only a scary contest at Wichita State, where Kansas was lucky to escape with a 63-61 victory, has provided a challenge for the defending National Champs. National player of the year candidate Jesse Mason has led the way averaging 17.3 ppg and 13.9 rpg but he has also received plenty of support from junior guards Lars George (17.6 ppg) and Joe Johnson (12.6 ppg).

For the second year in a row the University of California beat Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl to cap an undefeated season. The Bears held off a late Irish comeback bid to win 28-23 and finish 10-0 on the year. California also went 10-0 last season including a 40-13 win over Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame ended the season with a 10-2 record. The Irish's other loss came at Nebraska (7-1).

In real life California and Washington&Jefferson played to a scoreless tie in the Rose Bowl.

There were two other bowl games to conclude the 1921 season.

Southwest Conference Champion Texas hammered Louisianna State 33-14 in the Dixie Bowl while Cornell beat Iowa 24-14 in the San Diego Christmas Classic.

The Longhorns and Texas A&M finished tied for top spot in the SWC and tied each other 17-17 in their regular season matchup. Texas was given the conference title and a Dixie Bowl bid because of a better points ratio. In the real Dixie Bowl of January 2, 1922 Texas A&M beat Centre 22-14.

I want to build up a little more history in each of these sports so I am going to pick up the pace of the sim. Rather than post all the different stories as I sim from day to day I am going to do an end of the year recap for each sport. I will still focus on all of the same events but I will group it by sport each year instead of date. Hopefully this will make it a little easier to follow as well as pick up the pace a little.

Starting with 1922 each sport will get it's own couple of posts every year. I will still keep it more or less in chronological order so we will begin with the basketball and hockey reports, then move on to the Indy 500, golf and baseball before wrapping each year up with football. Since boxing runs all year I will save it for last.

Unless there is some big objection I am going to eliminate the Kentucky Derby from this sim at least until I can find a decent program that let's me rate horses and run the races. Using a dice game takes far too long to complete a race and the sport really seems incomplete without a triple crown. I have not been able to find full info on past Preakness and Belmont races of the era.

Thanks to all who are reading along and I hope the slight format change makes it even easier to follow.

The 1922 hockey and basketball recaps will be posted in the next day or so.
