Harry Ertle (New Jersey)
Regarded as one of the best 'third men' in the 1920s, he's forever remembered as the man who tolled the fatal ten over a prostrate Georges Carpentier in his failed attempt to wrest the world title from Jack Dempsey at Boyle's Thirty Acres in New Jersey. Ertle was the referee for many important fistic contests including Willard vs Firpo, Mike McTigue and Young Stribling, championship battles between Jimmy Wilde and Mickey Russell, Johnny Kilbane and Frankie Burns, Benny Leonard and Johnny Dundee, and others totalling over one thousand bouts. His reputation was such in the boxing world that his decisions were rarely, if ever, questioned.
