2077 Season (8/5 – 8/8)

San Francisco Seals (51-57, .472, 4th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (65-42, .607)
Despite their mid-season rebranding, the artist formerly known as the 49ers, are still a bad team – they can’t score (12th in the NL for runs), don’t hit for average (8th in the NL in AVG @ .260), and have the power of a 7-year old (12th in the NL for HRs). Their top power guy, Aaron Sammon, has, at 15 homers so far, hit twice as many dingers as their #2 guy… that’s not great. Sammon, who went to Cal despite hailing from Yelm, WA, spent 7 years in the Citizen’s organization before beginning his second career as a journeyman. He’s made stops in Carolina and Portland before starting the 2077 season in the Bush League with the Naperville Nibblers. San Francisco purchased his contract before the start of the 2077 campaign, and before he had the honor of playing a game for that organization, and the move has paid some pretty okay dividends… he’s batting .273 (good enough for his second best showing in the pros) with 15 homers and 52 RBIs from the cleanup spot. Not wonderful, but worth every penny of his $545K price tag. We’re 6-1 against these guys so far – we play them pretty tough – and are in need of a patsy to run up our lead on Phoenix a little bit. Let’s hope that the La La’s don’t do that thing they do against bad teams over these next four contests…

108 of 162: David Ouwerkerk (7-7, 3.28) @ Newton Weiser (11-5, 2.91)
Win, 8-0
. Newton was phenomenal over 9 innings of shutout baseball and PEPPER GRANT went 3 for 4 with a HR and 2 runs (where has he been anyway?) to help secure a nice game one victory. We got a 3 for 4 day out of Lonzo Gonzo, Dontrell brought in 3 runs (on a 2-run HR and a SAC FLY), Ethan picked up his 38th steal, and our defense completed 3 double-plays – Hamza-Mack-Hong, Gay-Mack-Hong, and Mack-Hamza-Hong…

Elsewhere:
Payton Gardner, of the Staten Island Killer Bees (Brooklyn affiliate), went 2 for 2 with 2 homers, 5 RBI, 3 runs, and 2 walks in their 14-4 win over the Louisville Bats. At 29-years old, Payton has bounced between the big club and the minors throughout his career – in 2077 he managed to make 38 appearances for the Citizens (he hit .238 with 2 homers and 13 RBI) before being demoted on July 29th. In other bad news out of Brooklyn – Jules Winfield was demoted to Staten Island on the 30th… he’s only played one game for the Killer Bees during which he went 1 for 4 with a walk and a K.

109 of 162: Gareth Bertrand (5-1, 2.85) @ Aiden Jensen (7-10, 5.22)
Loss, 4-3
. Aiden took another loss in a game that he could have just as easily won – 7 innings, 9 hits, 4 earned… Otto struck out THREE times, OH HONG struck out TWICE (he also hit a double though), and PEPPER had the day off...

Elsewhere: 2B Telma Taveres (JAX) hit two out against the Toronto Reds (Jacksonville lost by a score of 11-8), former Laker, current Citizen, Merl Crawford pitched a complete game gem and earned a 9-2 win over the Steelers, and former Phoenix Sun, current Shreveport Sashimi Samurai, 2B Gianni Berghuis, went 5 for 8 with TWO doubles, FOUR runs, and TWO walks in a hard-fought, 5-3 win over the Gamecocks in Gainesville, FL.

110 of 162: Jan Hernandez (8-8, 4.27) @ Paul Yeager (15-4, 3.12)
Win, 4-1
. Paul Yeager pitched an 8-inning, 7-hit, 1-run game, and RF Rajkumar Kosciusko went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the win… 29th save for Barbaccia, PEPPER returned to the lineup and went 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI, OH HONG K’d twice (again), and Otto stole his 19th bag… a good win, we’ve secured a split but need a 3-1 series win (our 3 ½ lead over Phoenix is not enough)…

Elsewhere: Micky King, of the Hagerstown Hummers, was at it again in Bush League play – another 2 HR game for the young slugger. The Hummers beat the Dearborn Dilly’s by a final score of 10-3.

111 of 162: Nolan Wilkins (2-3, 5.09) @ Dejuan Burns (8-8, 3.77)
Loss, 2-1
. Dammit. Dejuan was a’ight – he allowed 2 over 6 – but the offense was not… 9 K’s as a team, an error for O. Mack, and another unsatisfying series result at home. We’re just mailing it in at this point, man. Nothing else to say about it…

Elsewhere: Phoenix beat the Minnesota North Stars by a score of 15-9 and are now a scant 2 ½ games behind us… we got three against the Chargers before heading out on the road – another poor team in our park bent on making us look bad to our hometown fans. FUN! Oh, and Payton Gardner, who I highlighted earlier, got called back up to Brooklyn… meanwhile, Jules is still a Killer Bee – it’s an unfair world.

2077 Season (8/9 – 8/11)

San Diego Chargers (42-67, .385, 5th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (67-44, .604, 1st NL West)
At 42-67 and 24 games off the pace, San Diego is a club that can get on base (5th in the NL) but doesn’t do much when they get there (9th in runs). And their pitching and defense has been a liability – 10th in runs against, a -100 rDiff, and ranked 11th in Starters ERA… it’s safe to say that the arms on the Chargers payroll aren’t exactly earning their pay. It’s been a tough season for the Chargers faithful – and 2076 wasn’t much better as they broke their 3-year playoff streak and look to create a playoff miss streak in 2077. Brightside? Their AAA Affiliate, the Huntington Beach Bombers, are currently 64-44 in the International League… so they have that going for them.

112 of 162: Artyom Fadeyev (4-14, 6.11) @ Michael Brisk (8-9, 3.81)
Loss, 4-3
. Sheesh – you give a guy a little bit of money and suddenly the passion is gone – Brisky runs his loss total up into double digits for the 3rd time in his career and is trending towards a career-high 14 losses… yikes. I’m tempted to ask Megan to break into his locker and steal the keys to his Lambo. Not much worth highlighting here (again) – the offense is still sputtering, the team’s baserunning lacked our usual verve, and outside of hitting a few doubles we really didn’t do much at the plate.

Elsewhere: Huge blow to the AL East-leading New York Jets – SP Philip King is lost for the season due to a torn labrum… currently, the Jets have a 3 game lead on the Carolina Panthers… Oh and Phoenix won their game against the San Francisco Seals and are now only 1 ½ games back.

113 of 162: Rod Garcia (4-8, 5.90) @ Newton Weiser (12-5, 2.75)
Loss, 6-1
. Wow. San Diego charged three to Newton’s account in the top of the 1st and never looked back – and we did nothing to answer back – our offense is a complete disaster right now – there is just no other way to put it. Otto, Voorhis, and Hamza each went 0 for 4 with Ethan & Rajkumar being the only batters to record a hit.

Elsewhere: SP Case Tunnell delivered a Complete Game, 3-hit, shutout over the Dallas Cowboys in the LA Galaxy’s 5-0 win – remember when he was a Laker? Can it be that it was all so simple then? Oh, and before I forget, FRODO Gonzalez of the Seattle Sounders went 2 for 4 with 2 homers, 4 ribbies, and 2 runs in their 11-5 win over the Golden State Warriors and in so doing remain a full 5 ½ games up on the Galaxy despite Case’s best efforts. PLUS… Some good news out of THE CITY OF COMPTON – Zach Lavoie – a guy whose contract we purchased from the Nolanville ‘Nauts recently – went 4 for 4 with a double, 2 jacks, and 2 walks in the Raiders 11-10 win over the Mexico City Diablos. Not to be outdone, Bakari Konate went 3 for 5 with a double, a ding dong, 3 ribbies and 3 runs for the contest as well… he’s got an outside chance at being somebody one day.

114 of 162: Burt McElheny (8-10, 4.46) @ Aiden Jensen (7-11, 5.22)
Win, 7-5
. OK – so, we didn’t get swept… that’s cool. But where has this offense been? It seems like the sticks only come out in fits and starts… Otto hit a double and drove two in, O-Mack hit a 2-run homer, Barbaccia picks up his 30th save, and we got 3 double plays. We’ll take it – happily. But the reality here is that we should’ve swept these guys and the fact that we didn’t is, well, concerning.

Quick note: Welp – we are now only 1 ½ games up on Phoenix. Just pissing it away at this point… to make matters worse, while we have gone 5-5 over our last 10 the Suns are on something of a hot streak and have put a nice little 7-3 run together over that same stretch. This thing is going to go down to the wire – fun for the fans I guess, but, if I’m honest, I’d prefer a comfortable lead and a less frenzied finish to the season – and, look, we still have ~50 games to go here so there is a lot of runway left – but, the combination of our ****ty form and Phoenix’s rise is giving me nightmares.

2077 Season (8/13 – 8/22)

2077 Season (8/13 – 8/15)
Los Angeles Lakers (68-46, .596, 1st NL West) @ Carolina Panthers (60-55, .522, 2nd AL East)

Carolina’s 1B, and two-time all-star, Pablo Madera is on a bit of a run – the former Banana Slug has hit safely in 30 straight contests, leads the Panthers in AVG, HRs, and RBIs, and is trending to record over 200 hits for the 2nd straight season… Traveling to Carolina for some interleague silliness is hardly ideal – they’re good nearly everywhere, have themselves a lockdown pen, and are efficient defensively. And they are poised to make a run at the AL East crown at 7-4 so far in August and with New York losing their Ace for the season – the time is now for Carolina. After breaking their 6-year playoff drought in 2076, the Panthers are looking to put together a Championship run in 2077 before the window closes on this thing… you generally can’t stay on the top with an economizing meddler in the owners' box, so, the time almost certainly has to be now.

115 of 162: Paul Yeager (16-4, 3.02) @ Lee Myers (5-10, 4.14)
Loss, 4-2
. Hamza went 3 for 5 with a 2B and 2 runs – but it’s not enough as Myers doesn’t give up a run through 6 & 1B Pablo Madera hits safely for the 31st time in a row.

116 of 162: Dejuan Burns (8-9, 3.74) @ Matt Martin (8-8, 5.21)
Win, 6-4
. Dom drove three in and Tony hit a double, a homer, recorded 2 RBI, and plated twice in this one to help secure a much-needed win. Save #31 for Barbaccia. Madera went 1 for 4, extends streak to 32 games.

117 of 162: Michael Brisk (8-10, 3.89) @ Dan Van Guilder (7-6, 4.98)
Win, 10-3
. Taking two of three off of the Carolina Panthers is no small feat – and couldn’t have come at a better time… Rajkumar went 3 for 3 with a 2-run homer and Brisky gave us a strong 6-inning performance to notch his 9th win. Madera can’t be stopped – 33rd straight game with at least one hit – he went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

Elsewhere: While we were busy battling the Panthers and gutting out a 2-1 series win, the Phoenix Suns busied themselves by sweeping the Green Bay Packers and moving within a ½ game of the top spot in the NL West (and they also took the top spot in the weekly power ranking) … not ideal. The St. Louis Rams are making a run on Pittsburgh and have moved to within 2 ½ games of the top spot in the NL East. Things are close in the National League. Some news on the Derek Jeter front – after just one game in Nolanville, the crusty vet was bought out by the Chicago Fire and is now plying his trade for their minor league affiliate in Columbus where he’s hitting .222 with an RBI and 6 K’s so far… just a limp to the finish at this point it seems. The MLB saw some great pitching performances over this three-game stretch – Josiah Weber recorded a 4-hit, complete game, shutout over the Sounders (a 5-0 win for St. Louis), AJ Hinson put up a 2-hit, CG shutout over the Golden State Warriors in a 6-0 winning effort for the Montreal Wanderers, and Pittsburgh’s Cole Guzman threw a NO HITTER for the Steelers against the Portland Timbers in a 7-0 win where he also K’d 8 while walking 3 batters… his is the 1st No-No in the MLB in nearly 3 years.

2076 Season (8/17 – 8/19)
Dallas Cowboys (46-71, .393, 6th AL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (70-47, .598, 1st NL West)

Offensively anemic and defensively challenged is probably the best way to describe the Dallas Cowboys, who have excelled at finding new ways to disappoint their fanbase here of late. They are 10th in runs scored and 12th in runs allowed for a -124 rDiff and have a little bit of pop but not much else. What they do have right now, though, is a pretty sturdy list of players on the IL including SP Wing Sung, who, despite having a pretty cool name, is the kind of guy who fits in nicely with a staff as bad as the one the Cowboys have put together – so, not really a player of value and probably a guy who won’t really be missed here – I just kind of liked his name, and, frankly, there is not much else to highlight when it comes to the Cowboys – so, there you have it…

118 of 162: Steve Unger (4-10, 5.03) @ Newton Weiser (12-6, 2.93)
Win, 9-1
. CG, 2-hit, 1-run performance from Newton (a nice bounce back from his last outing where he had three charged to his account in the top of the 1st), Dom went 2 for 3 with a homer and 3 ribbies, and Otto hit a 3-run bomb in the bottom of the 1st (a four-run bomb cyclone unleashed on Steve Unger here – sound eerily familiar).

119 of 162: Jonathan Salcido (1-2, 10.24) @ Aiden Jensen (7-11, 5.23)
Win, 7-3
. Nice day for Aiden – 8 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, and 8 K’s – O. Mack drives in a run and scores, and Rajkumar went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored in this one where we win despite the fact that Otto, Hamza, Ethan, and Tony went a combined 0 for 13.

Good news from the CITY OF COMPTON: RF Ronin Greene, another BL purchase of ours, went 3 for 4 with 2 homers, 5 RBI and 3 runs while teammate LF Joseph Zody went 4 for 4 with a 2-run jack and 2 runs in the Raiders 12-4 win over the Cincinnati Bengals… a nice little road win here for our minor league club in the bagel capital of the world (no – that’s not right… of the Midwest? Seems possible. Of Ohio? Yeah – that’s probably it).

120 of 162: Steve Allen (9-8, 5.26) @ Paul Yeager (16-5, 3.12)
Win, 6-2
. SWEEP! Yeager gives us a strong 7 innings, PEPPER hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 2nd, and Rajkumar hit an RBI double and scored twice. Hamza picked up his 41st steal – moving him into the 3rd slot for burgled bags in 2077.

Elsewhere: 5-game winning streak for the La La’s now… and we’ve ballooned our lead over the Phoenix Suns up to TWO… okay, okay – that’s not that many games, so, perhaps, I’ve overstated it by saying ‘ballooned’… but you get the gist – we’re excited. The New York Jets have gone 9-1 since losing their Ace, Phillip King, to a season-ending injury… built for this, I guess. Oh, wait – CRAP… the Suns won their rubber match over the Houston Dynamo by a score of 22-1 and are now only a 1 ½ games off our pace. As luck would have it – they are currently headed our way… perfect timing, we feel good about our form and are looking forward to settling this thing out on the field in front of our people… let’s just hope that their offense blew their wad with that 22-1 performance.

2077 Season (8/20 – 8/22)
Phoenix Suns (72-49, .595, 2nd NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (73-47, .608, 1st NL West)

Look, Phoenix has an okay staff – they’re solid and can step up and surprise teams every now and again – it’s just that pitching and defense isn’t how the Suns are getting it done in 2077… it’s their smashmouth juggernaut of an offense that is giving teams fits – 1st in runs scored, OBP, OPS, wOBA, HRs, and 2nd in AVG and bWAR… it’s safe to say that this unit is the best offense in the majors and is on the precipice of going down as one of the most effecting lineups in the history of the MLB… kind of bums me out, if I’m being honest – I really thought this franchise would sink to the bottom of the pool after my departure but, yeah, not so much.

121 of 162: Cam Murphy (9-7, 4.23) @ Dejuan Burns (9-9, 3.75)
Loss, 4-2
. This was not the result we were looking for… good effort from Cam with 6 K’s over 8 innings, and we’re not completely dissatisfied with our ability to keep their offense in check a little bit – but we need to be better against their ho-hum pitching.

122 of 162: Jack Sanchez-Flores (12-7, 4.31) @ Michael Brisk (9-10, 3.86)
Win, 7-0.
BRISKY! Your boy nearly completed the game and managed to shut down the high octane PHX offense in this one – all hail the ‘stache! Rajkumar went 2 for 2 and O. Mack goes 2 for 4 with 2RBIs and a run. Has the youth movement begun? Otto, Hamza, Tony, and Ethan – 1 hit each…

123 of 162: Patrick Keith (7-4, 5.25) @ Newton Weiser (13-6, 2.83)
Win, 4-3
. We did it – we conquered the Suns who have been dominant against us in the regular season for some time now. Newton gutted it out for 8 innings and only allowed three runs on 6 hits and Dontrell Gay went 2 for 3 with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st. 32nd save for Barbaccia and we got the win despite committing 2 fielding flubs.

Elsewhere: Carolina 1B Pablo Madera has run his consecutive game hit streak up to 37… which puts him in a tie for 6th all-time with Frasier Escobar who accomplished the feat in 2031. Escobar was a highly decorated player in his day – a 3-time all-star, 2038 silver slugger winner, and 1-time Boyce Rigg recipient. After this set, Phoenix has fallen back in line – 2 ½ games back & 4th in the weekly power ranking (we’ve moved up to 2nd)… SP Adam Gunter, of the Vancouver Whitecaps, pitched a CG shutout with 11 K’s in a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Seals and pretty much willed his team to the victory. Derek Jeter’s limp to the finish may get postponed as he is currently giving a good account of himself in the IL – he’s improved his AVG to .303 with the Columbus Bluejackets and could be on the shortlist for a call up in September if he keeps it up… early talks with Otto to extend his contract have failed – he’ll be a free agent at the end of this campaign and it’s looking like he intends to cash in… I have Megan cooking up a back-up plan just in case we lose our superstar.

2077 Season (Random Notes)

My assistant, Megan, is leaving the fold – it seems that the San Marcos Supremos have made her an offer to take over GM duties effective immediately on a 5-year, $980K per contract… There are a few things to parse out here… 1. She’s ready, that much is true, but I was grooming her to take over GM duties here in LA as I planned on making a play to become the President of Baseball Operations at the end of the 2077 campaign, 2. She’s leaving me in a bit of a lurch here as I have had no time to even contemplate who I should hire as a replacement – though she tells me that a friend of her, who is going to art school for dance, would be a good fit, and 3. I don’t know any of the passwords to my cable, power, stock, etc accounts and, honestly, can’t remember how to adult as she has taken care of all of that for me over the last few years in LA… Basically, I’m happy for her – it’s a dream opportunity to be sure – but, I’m also scared ****less… I’ll have to keep my eye on her progress as a 1st time GM – who knows, maybe I can bring her back into the fold one day.

LF Aitor Cubas, of the Seattle Sounders, and a guy that I don’t talk about enough (he’s that rarest of animal – an international signee who actually delivers on his potential), has taken over the HR lead in the MLB – he’s currently hitting .271/.433/.536 with 30 HRs, 73 RBI, and 86 runs… his 5.4 WAR puts him in 4th in that category behind Ray Gerhold (PHX, 5.9 WAR), Heathcote Kinton (LAG, 5.7 WAR), and Roan Munoz (BRK, 5.4 WAR)… Cubas was discovered out of Santa Domingo, DR by the Sounders Scouting Staff in 2069 and is in the last year of his $13.5M contract – listen, I love this guy, but I am under no illusion that we will be able to get him if we lose Otto… I’ll give it a go, sure, but I’m not looking to break the bank for any single player, so the chances are slim. And, besides – OTTO leads the leagues in SAC FLIES so he, obviously, will be my #1 priority.

2077 Season (8/24 – 9/1)

2077 Season (8/24 – 8/26)
Los Angeles Lakers (75-48, .610, 1st NL West) @ Vancouver Whitecaps (46-79, .368, 6th NL West)

Outside of All-Star Catcher Laz Braun, the Vancouver Whitecaps don’t have much in the way of assets – they are a floundering club mired in a poor season with suspect ownership and no talent to speak of in the front office. They are, in a word, an also-ran. Content to grind their way through another disappointing season while daring their adopted city to turn their backs on them so they can quietly head off to some town south of the border like a thief in the night… it’s always a treat to visit BC – I’ve said as much many times – good food, good hiking, and a lively downtown make Vancouver a real treat for any discerning traveler – it’s just that, well, the baseball kind of sucks lately, and that is always a drag.

124 of 162: Paul Yeager (17-5, 3.09) @ Jeronimo Tucker (3-8, 5.83)
Loss, 5-1
. It’s always nice to start off a road set against a team that really only has a punchers chance of beating us by getting blasted by a bad one in the face… Yeager came undone in the 6th and allowed 4 runs to plate in that frame while Jeronimo had us on a string in a dominant CG performance for the aging vet.

125 of 162: Aiden Jensen (8-11, 5.13) @ Jack Souris (3-11, 4.62)
Win, 8-2
. Well, we picked ourselves up off the canvas and took it to the Whitecaps in this one – Aiden went the distance and only allowed 2 earned runs and Rajkumar went 3 for 3 with 2 runs and a walk. Hamza hit a 3-run double and finished the game with 4 RBIs and an… error.

126 of 162: Dejuan Burns (9-10, 3.76) @ Anthony Boswell (5-6, 4.16)
Win, 10-5
. Otto finished at 2 for 3 with 2 jacks 2 RBI, and 3 runs, and Hamza & Ethan both add a homer of their own to take the 2-1 series victory over the Whitecaps. PEPPER got caught stealing in this one.

Elsewhere: Pittsburgh’s SP Edwin Blaxley nearly became the second Steeler to post a No-Hitter in a contest against the Montreal Wanderers… he managed to take his no-hit bid into the 7th inning, but his efforts were thwarted by a Rex Engelstad infield single. The mid-level, bottom of the rotation, Blaxley is 1-4 on the year with a 6.75 ERA… so this one came out of nowhere… in fact, Edwin is only on the big club as an injury replacement as he was called up from Nashville to replace SP Tony Hultquist who went down with back tightness – he’ll be back in the minors soon enough.

2077 Season (8/27 – 8/29)
Los Angeles Lakers (77-49, .611, 1st NL West) @ St. Louis Rams (71-55, .563, 2nd NL East)

St. Louis is always tough – even tougher on the road – but, we have the benefit here of not having to face Josiah Weber, and, despite dropping one to the lowly Whitecaps, are still in pretty good form as we arrive in the gateway city… With the best staff in the NL and an offense that consistently finds ways to get it done – even if they aren’t too flashy in that department – St. Louis is always a tough out. This will be a good litmus test for our club, though I’d rather take it in a situation where we didn’t still have the Phoenix Suns breathing down our neck.

127 of 162: Michael Brisk (10-10, 3.66) @ Trev Anderson (10-9, 4.28)
Win, 3-1
. Brisky is in a good way right now – we dig it – he’s recaptured some of his early-season mojo and went 8 strong innings for us in this one without allowing a single runner to plate (Barbaccia secures his 33rd save despite letting one slip by him here)… Rajkumar stays hot – 2 for 3 with a run, and Lonzo Gonzo drove two in. We’d also get a Hamza-Hong yo-yo DP, and a SAC BUNT out of Hamza as well.

Note: Madera’s consecutive game hit streak is now at 41…

128 of 162: Newton Weiser (14-6, 2.86) @ EJ Powers (4-3, 3.60)
Win, 9-2
. Newton gave us 7.2 with 7 K’s and 2 earned and OH HONG, back from the dead, went 2 for 5 with a 3-run jack in the top of the 7th… we scored 6 in that frame to put this one out of reach. Otto scored twice and we also got 7 stolen bases – 2x for Otto, O. Mack, and Hamza 9who now has 50) and 1 for Ethan… Voorhis continued to play terribly. He’s like Harry Houdini out here.

Note: Madera is at 42 and counting – all-time leader managed to go 47. Something special could be on the horizon. Oh, and Megan signed her first free agent as GM of the San Marcos Supremos – she picked up RP Brian Hayes for $282K – the 24-year old former PCU Whooping Crane has incredible stuff and two MLB caliber pitches in his repertoire but his movement & control leave a bit to be desired. AND, lastly – we are 17-8 so far in August after our disastrous 11-14 July.

129 of 162: Paul Yeager (17-6, 3.24) @ Josiah Weber (13-5, 2.90)
Win, 5-4
. Well, so much for not having to face Josiah… didn’t matter though as we secure the sweep in extras off a walk-off single courtesy of Dontrell Gay. Barbaccia picked up his 34th save and Voorhis committed his 3rd fielding flub – when it rains, it pours for that guy. I miss Ian Hanan.

Elsewhere: With the sweep, we have re-secured our rightful position on top of the weekly power rankings – Phoenix is 2nd, so no rest for the wicked here… speaking of the Suns, they now sit 3 ½ games back – ahh, some breathing room… and Madera continues to rake – he’s at 43 consecutive games with at least one hit now. Trevor Dotson of your CITY OF COMPTON RAIDERS put together a nice pitching performance for us in a game against the Seattle Supersonics – he went 8.1 with 5 hits and 2 earned runs – yeah, he’s not there yet, but he certainly will factor into my short term pitching plans, perhaps as early as 2078.

2077 Season (8/30 – 9/1)
Pittsburgh Steelers (79-51, .608, 1st NL East) @ Los Angeles Lakers (80-49, .620, 1st NL West)

A matchup between two of the NL’s powerhouses and a potential LCS preview – I’ve already said in a previous post that the Steelers are the bogeyman, and nothing has changed – they are still a tip-top club with a smashmouth offense and great pitching at 1 through 5… They are still without Hultquist for a few games, so we have that going for us, but the reality is that these guys are a collection of savages that come at you like a roman gladiator with freedom on the line. This set will, undoubtedly, require more than a few tums.

130 of 162: Robby Garrett (9-7, 4.29) @ Aiden Jensen (9-11, 4.94)
Loss, 7-6
. Tough loss – I mean, DOM hit a 3-run jack, Voorhis came back from the dead with a 3 for 5 day, and Aiden was solid over 7.2 – unfortunately, the ‘never say die’ Steelers put 5 runs on the board over the last three innings and stole this one from us.

131 of 162: Cole Guzman (11-11, 3.88) @ Dejuan Burns (9-10, 3.91)
Win, 5-4
. It’s not often that Cole Guzman gets chased out of the game early – but after we put 3 on the board against him during the bottom of the 3rd it was all downhill for him from there. Voorhis, now entering the box with a bat and everything, went 2 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs. Barbaccia gets #35 and Hamza stole his 51st bag.

Note: Madera’s consecutive game hitting streak has come to an end… 44 games, only three away from the record, for the Carolina Panther’s first baseman. He now sits at 3rd all-time behind Vica Cabrera (47 in 2036) and Rick Jones (46 in 2022).

132 of 162: Gregory Morgan (11-5, 4.31) @ Michael Brisk (11-10, 3.49)
Win, 3-2
. We’d get this one done in extras – the walk-off win comes courtesy of a run-scoring Rajkumar single in the bottom of the 13th… Brisky was vintage over 8 innings, PEPPER hit his 23rd double, and we git two really nice double-plays.

Elsewhere: We now have a 4 ½ game lead on the Phoenix Suns – pretty sweet, you ask me. And… it’s roster expansion time – SP Trevor Dotson, 1B Arnold Webster, LF Joseph Zody, and LF Kumar Bovie are among the notable players we brought up to the big club. Webster’s power bat will be inserted into the starting lineup as our DH right away. AND, we finished August with a 19-9 record - which ties May as our best month of the season so far...

2077 Season (9/3 – 9/12)

2077 Season (9/3 – 9/5)
San Francisco Seals (64-69, .481, 3rd NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (82-50, .621, 1st NL West)

San Francisco’s SP Landon Sampson, widely considered a top-ten talent in the MLB, is having himself a pretty solid season for the ho-hum Seals. So far in 2077, he’s 10-5 with a 2.83 ERA (#1 in the League), 202 K’s (#1 in the League), and a 5.5 WAR (you guessed it, #1 in the League). He’s been a dominant force on a squad that does nothing to reward his efforts – these guys have one of the worst offenses in the League and unless your version of run support is some encouraging words of wisdom for their Ace in the dugout then they offer none. The Seals started off the season with a 5-17 April and, while they have played .500 or better ball each month since then, have never been able to make up the ground they lost at the outset of this campaign. This is a team that won the 2074 World Series after making the playoffs 15 straight times who haven’t been back there since – if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times… the future is not bright in the Bay Area… and, despite their swanky midseason rebrand, they’re not fooling anyone with this collection of misfit toys.

But first, a note… the San Marcos Supremos have not won a game since Megan’s highly touted arrival to town – an inauspicious start for my former assistant indeed. 0-6 so far with her at the helm and doing their best to sink the ship… I told her to hang in there, it takes time to install a new system. Oh, and Dontrell Gay is going to be a DtD decision over the next 4-weeks with a strained rib cage muscle. Bums me out, man. But, at least, Pepper should get some more reps – I mean, he’s getting paid and everything. We even have a uniform with his name on the back, you know what I mean?

133 of 162: Landon Sampson (10-5, 2.83) @ Newton Weiser (15-6, 2.83)
Loss, 9-4
. Newton lost the battle of the two pitchers with the best ERAs in the league – and he did so early in this one after allowing three to get across in the top of the 1st… ouch. Otto went 3 for 5 with a run and 2 RBIs and O. Mack scored twice – PEPPER went 0 for 3 in his start today. Money for nothing, man.

And, another quick note: Make that 0-7 for the San Marcos Supremos – if they don’t win soon they’re going to give that girl a complex.

134 of 162: David Ouwerkerk (7-8, 3.28) @ Paul Yeager (17-6, 3.31)
Win, 5-4
. Yeager tops out at around 88mph – but, it’s his control that is key and he had it in spades today – 8 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7 K’s and ZERO WALKS… O. Mack led the offense with a 2 for 4 performance where he added a dinger and 2 runs. 5 steals in this one for the La La’s – playing fast & loose on the base paths… 2 for O. Mack and one each for Zody, Ethan, and Cooke.

And, my last quick note on the subject: The San Marcos Supremos finally won a game during Megan’s short-lived tenure as the clubs GM… I expect the drunk texts to beginning any minute now…

135 of 162: Jan Hernandez (9-11, 4.47) @ Aiden Jensen (9-11, 4.99)
Win, 5-3
. Aiden showed another glimpse of what we expect him to one day become in a 7 inning, 10 K, and 2 earned performance and Dontrell Gay gutted out a 1 for 2 performance with a HR, 2 runs, and a walk. Barbaccia picks up his 37th save and Voorhis went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Elsewhere: 39-year old St. Louis Right Fielder, Malcolm Charlebois, recorded his 2500th hit as a pro – the guy has been a low-key stud for a long time and has put together a well-decorated career in the bigs – 6 All-Star appearances, 5 Silver Sluggers, and 2 championships (both with the Rams in ’67 & ’68). Charlebois started his career in a Lakers uniform and is a well-traveled vet of the Majors having spent time in Houston, San Francisco, Phoenix, Brooklyn, and even Nolanville of the Bush League before the Toronto Reds bought his contract and then lost him in the Rule 5 draft to the Dallas Cowboys. Also – we’re 5 games up on our division rival Phoenix Suns currently and are on an 8-2 run over our last 10 games… the other Los Angeles team is in a good way too – they’ve gone 7-3 over their last ten and are making up ground on the Seattle Sounders in the AL West… they’ve closed the gap to a scant 3 ½ games and are playing some of their best baseball of the season.

2077 Season (9/6 – 9/8)
Minnesota North Stars (64-72, .471, 4th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (84-51, .622)

I have a bit of a soft spot for Shawna’s club and kudos to her brain trust for putting together the #2 offense in the National League – if only their advanced analytics team could tighten up their math around pitching… dead last in that department and if they could go any lower than that they would. It could be a tough set here as we’ve been winning games despite the fact that our big dogs have been inconsistent at the plate – could go either way.

136 of 162: Adrian Hollyfield (1-6, 5.50) @ Dejuan Burns (9-10, 3.98)
Loss, 14-8
. A late charge in the top of the 8th, where the vaunted Minnesota offense went off for 6 runs, was all it took to do us in here… We were sloppy on the bump tonight – Burns gave up 6, Loving gave up 5 in relief, and Trevor Dotson gave up another in 1.1 innings of work. Sometimes you got it – and sometimes you don’t. Good impersonation of what we expected from Minnesota’s staff though.

137 of 162: Norm Rodriguez (11-7, 3.88) @ Michael Brisk (11-10, 3.44)
Win, 1-0
. Brisky remains phenomenal – 8.1 with 2 hits and 6 K’s tonight with Barbaccia requiring only 7 pitches to close it out in the top of the 9th for the 38th time this year. Our lone score came in the bottom of the 8th on a PEPPER GRANT SOLO HOMER, his 14th of the year… money well spent, I’d say.

Ok, I’m a lying liar – another quick note: Megan’s Supremos have put together a nice little 3-game winning streak now and delivered their 3rd in a row by crushing the Decatur Donnybrooks by a score of 13-0. Whatever she said to them after they dumped their 6th in a row seems to be working…

138 of 162: Matt Olston (8-15, 5.17) @ Newton Weiser (15-7, 3.05)
Win, 4-2
. Gettin’ it done now… Newton gave us 8, 4-hit innings and K’d 8 while allowing only 2 runs and Hamza finished 2 for 4 with a 3-run ding dong in the bottom of the 5th. Barbaccia racks up another save, Dontrell drove in a run, and we stole two bags. Nice series win here – and you gotta love how we shut down their offense after they crushed us in the first game.

Elsewhere: Rad Taylor, currently with your CITY OF COMPTON RAIDERS, twirled a complete-game, 6-hit shutout with 13 K’s over the Columbus Blue Jackets… 3 of his K’s would come at the expense of one Mr. Derek Jeter in this one – a fine day for our young(ish) prospect. Our lead over the Suns is back down to 4 ½ games – no worries though, I think we’re good for it, and the San Diego Chargers and Vancouver Whitecaps become the first regular-season casualties of the 2077 campaign as both clubs were unceremoniously mathematically eliminated from postseason consideration.

2077 Season (9/9 – 9/12)
San Diego Chargers (54-84, .391, 5th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (86-52, .623)

The downtrodden, recently eliminated from postseason contention, and all-around mistreated club from San Diego has little to highlight, nothing to play for, and even less to lose – they are exactly the kind of club that gives you concern at this stage of the game. You can’t lose to the right? That makes you look weak in the eyes of the other clubs who are still in contention. And, you can’t afford to have somebody get injured against them, right? That’d be like losing your star player during a friendly. So, what do you do in these types of situations then? Go through the motions, bring only that which is required to get the job done to the table and nothing more? Nah. It’s none of those things – you just baseball. Because that’s what we do.

139 of 162: Alfred Ath (0-0, 5.14) @ Paul Yeager (18-6, 3.31)
Win, 7-5
. It took a late burst in the 7th & 8th to get this W added to our permanent record – PEPPER was out there working for it – he went 3 for 4 with TWO doubles, TWO RBIs, and TWO runs and Voorhis hit a 2-run homer – always nice when a couple of guys who have been forgettable remind you of the good ol’ days…

Side note: San Diego Manager, Paul Porter, got a pink slip, a bus ticket, and told not to look back on his way out after the game tonight… that was uncomfortable. P-Squared had a 458-491 record and .483 winning percentage in his 6 seasons as the manager of the Chargers – he also made the playoffs three times despite his teams’ sub-standard budget… but no one cares about that, right? This is one of those, “what have you done for me lately’ situations that Janet was talking about, I think… We’ll be adding a AA team to the 6-team supplemental league that’s opening up at the end of the season – maybe I’ll take a flier out on the guy if he’s still available. Probably not though, because he’s just not all that good at baseball team management.

140 of 162: Artyom Fadeyev (6-18, 6.29) @ Aiden Jensen (10-11, 4.88)
Win, 9-5
. Complete game, 4-run effort from Aiden with 6 K’s, Otto went 2 for 4 with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 6th, and Hamza finished 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBIs… he also committed an error and got caught stealing – you can’t always have it all.

141 of 162: George Giess (0-4, 4.39) @ Dejuan Burns (9-10, 4.15)
Win, 3-2
. Tony Voorhis, seemingly awake for this one, went 3 for 5 with a double & 2 RBIs and Dom Cooke hit a solo home run that sealed the deal – ho-hum effort out of Dejuan, he went 6 innings before handing the pill off to Ferdinand Loving he would earn the win for us. SAC BUNT for HAMZA who took one for the team to advance the runner.

142 of 162: Burt McElheny (9-13, 4.58) @ Michael Brisk (12-10, 3.29)
Win, 3-2
. Ethan Mullens was perfect at the plate – 4 for 4 with a double, a homer, 2 RBIs and a run, Brisky gave us 7.1 quality innings with 6 K’s, and Barbaccia gets his 40th save… we got the most beautiful of beautiful results here – a 4-game sweep at home!

Elsewhere: First thing is first – “Angry” Eloy Delando, of the Vancouver Whitecaps, hit two balls out of the park tonight during their 5-1 win over the Minnesota North Stars – the perpetually displeased Delando added 5 RBIs and 2 runs in the effort to round out his line. Our lead over the Phoenix Suns is not at an astounding 7-games… we’ve been hot, and they have, suddenly, been mired in a malaise that doesn’t look like it will lift any time soon – I know that taking pleasure in another’s misfortune is a bad look, but… whatever – this **** feels good! Our 7-game lead, coincidentally, is the largest lead between a 1st and 2nd place team in any division in the MLB… oh how times have changed… and, yeah, we punched our tickets to the playoffs after our last win – and are now the only team in baseball guaranteed to get a spot in the playoffs – and with 20 games left!

2077 Season (9/13 – 9/22)

2077 Season (9/13 – 9/16)
Los Angeles Lakers (90-52, .634, 1st NL West) @ San Francisco Seals (69-73, .486, 3rd NL West)

While the Seals aren’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, yet, we all know that for all intents and purposes they are… just the series of events, unfortunate and otherwise, that would have to occur in order for San Francisco to make the playoffs are so far fetched and outlandish that even the most imaginative of dreamers would have a hard time getting behind the path required to make that happen. We’re at the point – fortunately for us – where our destiny is clear, our path to the playoffs defined and assured yet we still have to finish out the regular season marathon… our immediate goal here is to stay focused on the task at hand, to delay our preoccupation with the possibilities that have opened up before us, and to close out the 2077 campaign like a group of highly paid professionals.

143 of 162: Newton Weiser (16-7, 3.02) @ Nolan Wilkins (5-5, 5.23)
Loss, 2-1
. Newton was great – focused, he had his command, the slide was nasty – but the one run he gave up in the 3rd was all that would be required for the Seals to charge a big fat L to our account. Lonzo Gonzo went 4 for 5 and was stranded 4 times and OH HONG hit a solo shot in the top of the 6th – his 5th dinger of the season.

Note: The Dallas Cowboys can no longer conjure the type of witchcraft mathematics necessary to stay in playoff contention and instead have been unceremoniously disqualified from the big dance on a dress code violation of sorts - it seems that impersonating a baseball club is a crime in these parts. And, Derek Jeter, in what is perhaps the beginning of the swan song to his career, went 3 for 5 with a HR, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs in the Columbus Bluejackets 9-7 victory over the Newport Beach Gypsies. Lastly, Megan has been busy in San Marcos – she’s released three players, signed two prospects and an aging vet who has a little bit left, and sold her first contract to the Majors - $500k from the Steelers for SP Jaxon Richardson who will report to the Nashville Picks.

144 of 162: Paul Yeager (18-6, 3.39) @ Landon Sampson (11-5, 2.73)
Win, 4-1
. Yeager went 7.1 innings, allowed only a single score, and K’d 5 – serviceable, economical, and in command – and Otto went 1 for4 with 2 runs and 2 walks to help us secure the win. 41st save for Barbaccia, 26th double for Voorhis, and another SAC FLY for Ethan.

145 of 162: Aiden Jensen (11-11, 4.84) @ David Ouwerkerk (8-9, 3.36)
Win, 8-4
. We lost Aiden for 3-4 weeks with chronic back stiffness – also known as aging to those of us who are past our athletic prime – but the offense was awake… HAMZA hit a 2-run jack, OH HONG went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a run, and Ethan hit a 2-run double… 42nd for Barbaccia, second professional win for Trevor Dotson, who gave us 4.2 innings of work (he gave up 4, but was bailed out by the offense), and we got the 33rd home run for Otto.

146 of 162: Dejuan Burns (9-10, 4.12) @ Jan Hernandez (9-13, 4.60)
Win, 6-4
. Dejuan with a quality start, Dom with the 3-run jack… same as it ever was lately. 43rd save for Barbaccia, SAC BUNT for Hamza, SAC FLY for Rajkumar, and a 2 for 4 day from PEPPER.

Notes: With playoff spots still being sorted out in the Majors, there seems to be some last-minute jockeying for positions between several clubs… Meanwhile, in the International League, the bracket is all set… Long Beach, Salt Lake, Tucson, Huntington Beach, Sacramento, and Hartford will battle for the honor of representing the Republic League, while Sugarland, Newport Beach, Salem, Columbus (Deter is in the playoffs!), Seattle (Supersonics), and Nashville will fight for the honor of representing the Democratic League.

2077 Season (9/17 – 9/19)
Los Angeles Lakers (93-53, .637, 1st NL west) @ Philadelphia 76ers (71-75, .486, 6th NL East)

From Tricentennial hero to 2077 zero – Philadelphia has worked hard to accomplish the unenviable task of going from being the man to being the man that got beat – they still have a fierce power alley though… 27 jacks for Parker Palmer and 26 for Justin Jenkins… The Philadelphia 76ers have an oft-dangerous lineup in place that they’ve surrounded in mediocrity to achieve results that one would expect of a team with this sort of half-assed makeup. If this isn’t a tanking effort then it is, possibly, the poorest management of a big-league club that we’ve seen in some time. And if they don’t have a plan in place then wasting the prime of Jenkins & Palmer may rank amongst the most nefarious happenings within Strangeverse. In short – get your stuff together Philly and stop feeding your thoroughbred horse's nutritionally deficient pitching that can’t do their, very small, part of keeping it close enough for the bats to do some damage.

147 of 162: Michael Brisk (13-10, 3.21) @ Gary Benoit (4-5, 4.16)
Win, 4-3
. Brisky was meh, mostly fine, I guess – but, given the check, he’s been cashing I’ll settle on MEH… he allowed three in 5.2 – and Kumar Bovie hit a timely solo shot in the top of the 10th that put us up for good. 44th save for Barbaccia, 5 stolen bases for the club – Hamza, Otto, Mullens (2x) and O. Mack…

148 of 162: Newton Weiser (16-8, 2.94) @ Vin Uhlman (11-14, 4.40)
Loss, 6-1
. Uhlman went the distance, allowing only a single run to plate and Palmer Parker went 2 for 4 with an RBI… Newton labored on the mound – he allowed 5 runs for the contest, his most since 9/3 when the Seals put 6 on him… let’s hope a theme isn’t developing here. Hamza picked up his 53rd steal – he is currently sitting at 5th in the MLB for steals – 3B Jamie Burke, out of San Diego, is first with 64 so far in 2077.

Elsewhere: RF Hayden Kimmet hit his 300th career home run in a game against the St. Louis Rams – the current OF backup for the Phoenix Suns accomplished the feat in a Wildcard Clinching win for the Arizona upstarts – which means we will be facing them in the 1st round of the playoffs. Kind of a great news story for Hayden here as this feat would have never been possible if Phoenix didn’t buy his contract off the Coney Island Footlongs in early May. We are 7-7 against Phoenix so far in 2077. Also, in news that should surprise no one, the San Francisco Seals, after trying every possible numerical permutation have been officially eliminated from the 2077 postseason – mathematically and otherwise.

149 of 162: Paul Yeager (19-6, 3.31) @ Rex Marler (9-4, 4.26)
Win, 7-2
. TWO homers for Dontrell Gay, 7.2 innings of 2-run ball for Yeager (8 K’s too), a SAC FLY for Voorhis, and Ethan’s 28th double of the season during this contest… as a statistical side note you should be aware that 1B Jacob Wells, of the Phoenix Suns, leads the league in doubles at 43 so far…

2077 Season (9/20 – 9/22)
Los Angeles Lakers (95-54, .638, 1st NL West) @ Brooklyn Citizens (83-67, .553, 3rd NL East)

This one should be a dogfight as Brooklyn is fighting for their playoff life to close out the 2077 campaign – currently, they are a mere ½ game behind St. Louis for the last WC spot in the NL… they’ll be ready to play, we, well… we may or may not show up here – let’s be honest, it’s difficult to focus when you already know that you’ve won the NL West Division and that you’ll be playing your most hated rival when they playoffs finally get underway.

150 of 162: Trevor Dotson (2-0, 5.63) @ Josh Allen (17-9, 3.36)
Win, 8-7
. A 5-run top of the 8th was all she wrote in this one – Brooklyn reliever Ruell Compston failed to record even a single out in that frame and allowed 4 runs on 14 pitches including a 3-run homer by Otto. Starter Josh Allen also allowed two homers during the contest as Voorhis & Mullen both took him yard. Their case against St. Louis is getting weaker by the day folks…

Note: In two playoff games with the Columbus Bluejackets, Derek Jeter is currently hitting 1 for 8 with 1 RBI and 3 K’s… the end is nigh.

151 of 162: Dejuan Burns (10-10, 4.08) @ Nick Demmer (7-9, 4.10)
Win, 6-3
. Mario went 2 for 3 with a three-bagger and a homer, Dejuan gave us a solid 6.1, O. Mack went yard and drove in two runs, and Rajkumar recorded his 7th ding dong of the season – we’ve been on a bit of a roll… the fans in Brooklyn are not pleased.

152 of 162: Michael Brisk (13-10, 3.25) @ Miguel Machado (9-6, 5.06)
Win, 12-5
. ROAD SWEEP! Otto went 3 for 5 with TWO homers and 3 RBIs, Lonzo Gonzo hit a 3-run dinger, PEPPER hit a SAC FLY, we stole 5 bags (2x for Lonzo Gonzo, 1x for Otto, Ethan, and O. Mack), and Brisky struggled with his control over 6.1 innings but managed to keep us in it long enough for the offense to take over.

Notes: We’ve officially won our division – NL West Champs for the 3rd year in a row… Philly’s ability to make the calculations work on their playoff aspirations have officially expired – they won’t be represented in the playoffs without some super creative accounting work and some kind of Win laundering scheme…Also, the Columbus Bluejackets were swept from the IL playoffs by the Salem Silverbacks - Jeter, whose skillset suddenly resembles that of a 14-year olds, went 3 for 17 with 1 RBI... queue that one scene from Major League...

2077 Season (9/24 – 10/3)

2077 Season (9/24 – 9/26)
Vancouver Whitecaps (53-99, .349, 6th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (98-54, .645, 1st NL West)

45 games off the pace, the 1st team eliminated from playoff consideration, and a shoo-in to lose 100+ games in 2077 – the Vancouver Whitecaps are barely a baseball team. At this point in the season they, really, are barely worth talking about – so, our concern here is to navigate this series unscathed – without injury to mind, body, or spirit. We should make the series a free event – some sort of fan appreciation weekend where everyone gets in for free… but, we won’t, because Phil Murray likes to make money even though he seemingly has almost all of it.

153 of 162: Anthony Boswell (6-9, 4.49) @ Paul Yeager (20-6, 3.27)
Win, 5-4
. Yeager earns his 21st victory on the back of a 7.1 inning performance where he kept the game scoreless until handing it off to the pen – who, promptly opened the flood gates to the tune of 4 cheap ones to finish off the 7th. Otto hit a 3-run dinger (#37), Barbaccia kept on rolling and secured his 47th save – if he gets 50, I told him I’d buy him a pair of gold-plated Oakley shades – and we got TWO SAC FLIES. We play team ball in LA.

154 of 162: Cleveland Cornejo (5-14, 4.84) @ Newton Weiser (16-9, 3.07)
Win, 6-1
. We picked up our 100th victory for only the 2nd time in franchise history – the first came in 2061… a year in which we were unceremoniously swept out of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder who would go on to lose in 7 to Orlando City, who, in turn, would go on to lose to the Dallas Cowboys in the World Series… Newton walked 3, K’d 5, allowed 1 run, and 8-hits over 8.1 innings of hard, hard work while Tony Voorhis busied himself by going 2 for 3 with a double and a run, and OH HONG finished 2 for 4 with a 2-run two-bagger… 48th save for Barbaccia (I’ve started a cursory google search of gold plated Oakley shades – so far, so bad), and Otto got a nifty outfield assist when he gunned down Kevin Palmer at home.

Elsewhere
: Toronto & Green Bay were eliminated from the playoffs due to poor play and math. It was mostly poor play that did them in though…

155 of 162: Adam Gunter (12-13, 3.59) @ Trevor Dotson (2-0, 6.75)
Loss, 7-6
. Trevor allowed 6 runs again – it must be like his favorite number or something… Ethan went 3 for 5 with a double, a HR, and 3 RBIs, and we committed three fielding flubs that looked like we were reenacting a dance routine from Rock Follies.

Elsewhere: 2B Rich Hamilton, of the New York Jets, hit his 300th career homer in their 7-5 victory over the Chicago Fire – Hamilton went 3 for 5 with a historic 3-run homer. Dude has been a stud for a long time – he’s got a .318 lifetime BA, 2247 hits, and 1156 runs for his career… he’s also snagged 5 Boyce Rigg awards, 11 all-star bids, 8 silver sluggers, and was voted most likely to succeed by his fraternity brother while at Maryland. He was the 143rd overall pick in the 2062 draft and quickly earned a reputation as a hard-drinking, hard-working, man of the people – and, perhaps most importantly, he’s still killing it at the age of 36… .322/.461/.496 with 25 DING DONGS, 72 RIBLETS, and 173 HITS… hell, he’s even gone 2/3 in steal attempts.

2077 Season (9/27 – 9/30)
Phoenix Suns (87-68, .561, 2nd NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (100-55, .645, 1st NL West)

Look away – there’s nothing to see here… this series will play out like a maddening game of poker where both players check-raise until everyone else at the table falls asleep… 4 meaningless games before we meet in the 2077 playoffs… I mean, don’t get me wrong though, we want to smash these fools. Because they are bad people – worthy of your derision simply because they flex the burnt orange & eggplant purple. And because they make little kids cry – seriously, I’ve seen them do it and it is not cool, man.

156 of 162: Barney Luna (3-2, 6.04) @ Dejuan Burns (11-10, 4.09)
Loss, 3-2
. A run in the top of the 9th lifted the Suns to victory here… Barbaccia, who was only throwing knuckleballs, gave up the winning run… Mullens and PEPPER are responsible for our only two runs, we swiped three bags of questionable resale value as a team, and Otto gunned down Jerry Landowski at home after he tried to get cute and rounded 3rd on a Burton Darden double…

Elsewhere: The Chicago Fire and Orlando City were the latest clubs to draw the ire of simple mathematics. There will be no postseason in their immediate futures.

157 of 162: Jake Talley (4-8, 4.98) @ Michael Brisk (14-10, 3.32)
Win, 4-0
. Brisky was like fine wine paired with an aged & pungent cheese of questionable origin – he gave us an 8.2 inning, 3-hit, shutout in this one, Otto went 3 for 5 with a run-scoring triple, and Tony Voorhis hit a double, scored, and drew three walks… Barbaccia also got back on his trusty steed and secured his 49th save – I may have to have his Oakley’s custom made.

Elsewhere: Megan wasn’t expected to right the USS Supremo in the short term, her charter was always intended to be a more long-term course correction – 2077 was cooked before she arrived – and, even though her San Marcos club was bounced from playoff consideration, team ownership is excited to see what she does with the club for the 2078 season. My prediction? Bush League Championship. Get your markers down, trust me.

158 of 162: Patrick Keith (8-8, 5.16) @ Paul Yeager (21-6, 3.16)
Loss, 9-6
. Yeager didn’t bring his A-game – which is fine, we didn’t really want him to tip his cap to these fools anyways – but, he gave up 7 earned runs and managed to grant some undue confidence to the Phoenix offense. This could come back to bite us in the playoffs… let’s hope that isn’t the case. O. Mack hit a homer, PEPPER put up a 1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 walk, 1 K, and 1 LOB line, and we hit 3 doubles as a squad (31st for Mullens, 33rd for Tony, and 12th for O. Mack).

Elsewhere: The Seattle Sounders made it official – they are the 2077 AL West Division winner. Oh, and Golden State & the Los Angeles Galaxy are currently tied for the second spot in that division – going down to the wire in the AL West!

159 of 162: Jack Sanchez-Flores (13-11, 4.73) @ Newton Weiser (17-9, 3.00)
Win, 6-5
. Tony Voorhis was a nightmare for Phoenix today – 2 for 4 with a double, a jack, 3 RBIs amd 2 runs, and Ethan went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Loving picked up his 7th win in relief, I owe Barbaccia some gold-plated Oakley shades, and Tony, laying it down for the team, put a SAC BUNT on the board in the bottom of the 7th. Weiser gave up three runs in the top of the 1st – eek… let’s just pretend that it didn’t go down like that, sound good? We get the split here and finish the season with a 9-9 record against the Suns… will make for an interesting playoff series.

Elsewhere: The 2077 Bush League Playoffs are all set – the Beaumont Bullies & Gainesville Gamecocks will battle it out in a winner-take-all game to earn the opportunity to play a 5-game series against the Independence Division Champion Nolanville ‘Nauts while the Columbia Blowfish & Dearborn Dilly’s will do the same for the honor of meeting the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai for a 5-game series in Round 2.

2077 Season (10/1 – 10/3)
Los Angeles Lakers (102-57, .642, 1st NL West) @ Minnesota North Stars (76-83, .478, 3rd NL West)

We’ll end this campaign right back where we started – with a 3-game set against Shawna and her North Stars… Somehow, her offense has eclipsed ours to take the #2 ranking in the National League (we’re 3rd, Phoenix is 1st), but their 11th rated pitching staff has kept them from reaching whatever heights her well-built offense could have in 2077. If her brain trust can land a few pitching free agents and round out their bullpen a little bit, these North Stars may be primed to do some damage in 2078.

160 of 162: Trevor Dotson (2-0, 7.77) @ Dylan Tuyay (12-10, 6.04)
Win, 16-3
. Dotson allows three over eight, Rajkumar records 4 hits, 3 doubles, a ding dong, 5 RBIs and 4 runs, Otto scored 4 times, and even our back up catcher manages to drive in 3… Just a good old fashion thrashing in this one – we pride ourselves on making the perpetually happy Minnesotans unhappy.

Elsewhere: Brooklyn, Montreal, and Jacksonville have all been eliminated from the playoffs. In the NL it will be the Lakers, Suns, Rams, and Steelers, and in the AL it will be Carolina, NYJ, Seattle, and either Golden State or the LA Galaxy.

161 of 162: Dejuan Burns (11-10, 4.01) @ Octavio Cervera (17-6, 4.55)
Win, 8-7
. Otto – in full-on hero mode again, went 2 for 3 with a 3-run homer, Barbaccia gets #51 (and, I’m told that he really likes the Oakley’s I had made for him), and Ferdinand is Loving the fact that he’s managed to snipe 8 wins out of the pen…

Elsewhere: Phoenix’s LF Jerry Landowski joined the 400 HR Club today in a game against the Vancouver Whitecaps – he hit the memorable blast in front of his hometown fans in Phoenix. At 38-years old, the key to the 6-time all-star’s success can be summed up in one word: Longevity. Well, that and donuts. Jerry eats a cream-filled donut before every game, or so I’ve been told.

162 of 162: Michael Brisk (15-10, 3.19) @ Adrian Hollyfield (1-8, 5.78)
Win, 6-1
. Closing out 2077 on a road sweep, brochahos! Brisky caps off his 2077 regular-season campaign with an 8.2 inning masterpiece (8 K’s, 1 earned), Ethan went 3 for 5 with a triple, 2 ribbies, and a couple of runs and HAMZA went 4 for 5 with an RBI…Two RBIs for Otto, running his 2077 total to 117 (he also hit homer #39… so close to 40 – HEY, he did lead the league in that category though!), HAMZA stole #56, and Oh Hong & O. Mack went 0 for 8 with 5 K’s between them – kids these days, man.

Elsewhere: That’s it, man, the dishes are done! The Galaxy won a one-game playoff against the Oakland Warriors by a score of 7-6 to secure the final playoff spot (bracket is attached)… Otto led the league in jacks and slugging percentage, Paul Yeager recorded the most wins for a pitcher, Barbaccia led the league in saves, and Newton led the league in BABIP at .248 for the year…

Next up… our 7-game series against the Phoenix Suns.

2077 Postseason (Round 1)

Phoenix Suns (92-70, 2nd NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (105-57, .648, 1st NL West)
On our first trip to the World Series during my tenure, we didn’t have to go through Phoenix – not because they weren’t worthy, they were, but because they spent the bulk of 2075 with nearly half of their premier players on the IL. In 2076, Phoenix was able to shake off their injury woes and make it to the playoffs on a Wild Card entry – their run ended against us after a 7-game thriller where they gave as good as they got… In 2077 we will open the playoffs against them. This is a scary thing, on a number of levels… first, their offense is easily the best in all of baseball – their guys rake, score in bunches, and are never out of an at-bat, second, they play stout defense – no, they aren’t exactly wizards on the diamond, but they rarely make costly mistakes and third… they hate us, they’re hungry, and they have a score to settle. I expect a dog fight here and, if I’m being honest, I’m not 100% sure that we, despite our world-beater regular-season record, should be the favorite here… hell, when this thing shakes out, we might not even qualify as a live dog.

Game 1: Patrick Keith (0-0, 0.00) @ Paul Yeager (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 7-2
. So, this is a good start… we scored 3 in the bottom of the 1st and had 5 on the board by the end of the 3rd, Yeager pitched well – he gave us 7 innings, struck out 6, and only allowed 2 runs, Tony hit a double and a solo shot, and OH HONG went 2 for 4 with a double and a solo shot as well. In all, we hit 4 bombs on the day (with HAMZA and Dontrell adding dingers of their own), gaffled two bags (Otto & Ethan), and completed two snappy double plays. Hell, we even got two innings out of Barbaccia who gave us 20 pitches with zeroes across the board in relief.

Elsewhere: Tom Franzone, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, went 3 for 4 with TWO HOMERS, 6 RBIs, and 2 runs in their 6-5 game one victory over the St. Louis Rams – he was, essentially, the whole show for the Pennsylvania based ballclub. Also – The Carolina Panthers took a 2-0 lead over the Jets on a 12-2 home victory and the Seattle Sounders did the same against the Galaxy in a closer affair by a score of 2-1.

Game 2: Jack Sanchez-Flores (0-0, 0.00) @ Newton Weiser (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 8-7
. It’s the O. Mack, Dom, and OH HONG show in this one – 2-run blasts for O. Mack & Dom and a 3-run shot from OH HONG… Loving gets the W in relief, Barbaccia secures his first postseason save of 2077, Otto scored despite striking out 3 times, and only Rajkumar was unable to record a hit. So far, so good… we’re up by two games against the bad guys here. We’ve managed to handle our business so far but have a trip to Phoenix looming now where we will play out the next three games. It’s always tough to win in the desert.

Elsewhere: Pittsburgh Starter, Robby Garrett, pitched a complete-game shutout to lead his club to an 8-0 Game 2 victory – the Steelers really have St. Louis on the ropes now as the next three games will be contested in their ballpark, and Former Laker, Ian Hanan, went 3 for 5 with TWO DOUBLES and 4 RBIs in the winning effort.

Game 3: Michael Brisk (0-0, 0.00) @ Cam Murphy (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 10-9.
You guys! What is happening right now? This, a 3-0 lead against the Suns, is a surprising result to me – I went into this one thinking that this one would be rough – but, so far, not so much. Double for OH HONG, homers for Rajkumar, Ethan, Dom, and O. Mack, and, despite a poor performance from Brisky we get it done here with some of our mid-level guys carrying the weight. Don’t get me wrong, there was some bad here that we’ll need to parse out – Brisky only lasted two innings & gave up 5 earned runs, Barbaccia blew a save, and we committed two dumb errors. I feel like we got away with one here – and, to win in the playoffs, you gotta get away with it here and there. We’ll take it. Gladly.

Game 4: Dejuan Burns (0-0, 0.00) @ Julen Morales (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 8-4
. SWEEP! We did it – we’ve swept our rivals and will now move on to face the scary-looking Pittsburgh Steelers in the LCS… that series will be a mind-bendingly tough one, for sure. Julen, the former Laker, acquitted himself nicely against his old club – 7 innings, 5 hits, and only 3 earned – it was the 5 runs we put on their bullpen in the top of the TENTH that won it for us… Otto finally showed up… he went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and a homer, Ethan hit his 2nd ball out of the park, and Voorhis put a GRAND SLAM on the board in the top of the 10th! A great game (and great series) for the good guys!

Elsewhere: The Carolina Panthers & Los Angeles Galaxy will each represent their division in the ALCS after each slogging their way through thrilling 7-game series’… Los Angeles managed to win their game 7 on the road and have, in Heathcote Kinton, the best baseball player on the planet still in the playoffs – could be an LA Vs. LA World Series if we’re lucky.

OH HONG was amazing – he hit .444 for the series with TWO HRs and 4 RBIs and was a huge part of our sweep. Meanwhile, my $24-Million Dollar Man, PEPPER, went 0 for 8… The 1st Round, outside of Brisk, was about our pitching and our young position players – O. Mack took the series MVP after going 7 for 13 with a .538 AVG, 2 HRs, and 7 RBIs. We also hit 14 homers over the 4-game sweep – I have no way of knowing if that is a 1st round record for home runs, but my gut says it has to be – just a completely outlandish result… I mean, Houston has 17 jacks in the 2019 playoffs so far but that’s over a lot more than 4-games.

We’ll need all that and more against Pittsburgh.

2077 Playoffs (Round 2)

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-0, 1.000) @ Los Angeles Lakers (4-0, 1.000)
The Steelers are a team with no weaknesses – they are either good or great in every major statistical category and have one of the most explosive power lineups in the league coupled with a dominant pitching staff. They took the regular season against us by winning 5 of the 9 games we played head-to-head and have really put something special together for 2077 – they even won the trading game with us as the Ian Hanan for Tony Voorhis trade has, so far, played out in their favor. This is just a tough, head down, lunch pail packed, and always ready to grind type of club who will be a considerable challenge for us.

Game 1: Robby Garrett (1-0, 0.00) @ Paul Yeager (1-0, 2.57)
Win, 11-0
. And our postseason dominance continues – and we manage to score 11 runs without a single HR. Hamza leads the way with 2 runs and an RBI, OH HONG drove two in, and Ethan hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the 5th to get us started in what would become a 5-run inning for the La La’s. Yeager left early with an injury – let’s hope that it’s not serious – but Trevor Dotson, who came on in relief, gave us 4.1 innings of 2-hit ball while striking out 4 batters. We manage to keep Franzone and Hanan hitless, stole 4 bags, and got an amazing OF assist from Otto who threw a laser to Dom to get Ian Hanan out at the plate.

Note: Paul Yeager is listed as DtD for the next three days – should be no big deal. Whew!

Game 2: Cole Guzman (0-0, 9.64) @ Newton Weiser (0-0, 8.53)
Win, 2-1
. We managed to sort this one out in the bottom of the 12th when TONY VOORHIS hit a run-scoring double for the walk-off win! Coming up big against his old club… Dontrell Gay put a ball out of the park, Newton gave us 5 innings of work with 8 K’s and only 1 earned, and Barbaccia pitched 3.2 innings (45 PITCHES) and struck out 2 batters.

Game 3: Michael Brisk (0-0, 22.50) @ Tony Hulquist (1-0, 2.57)
Win, 2-1
. Dontrell Gay’s solo HR in the top of the 9th (his 2nd jack of the series) secured the win for us and Brisky had a nice bounce-back performance for us here – he went 7 innings, struck out 5, and only gave up 1 run. Another extended effort from Barbaccia who gave us 2 innings in relief and picked up his first win of the postseason, Mullens & Voorhis both hit TWO DOUBLES, and Franzone & Hanan both stayed cold. A 3-0 lead against these guys seems unfathomable – we are truly playing the best baseball of my GM career in LA. Craziness.

Game 4: Dejuan Burns (0-0, 3.86) @ Kurt Miller (1-0, 0.00)
Win, 9-1
. Another SWEEP, like it’s no big deal – Otto went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs, Dontrell drove in 3 runs, OH HONG hit his 3rd double of the postseason and drove two in, and Hamza manages to put LA’s first triple on the board. 3 stolen bags, 5.1 solid innings from our starter, and some fine work in relief out of Aiden Jensen… we’re basically an unstoppable force here.

Note: Dontrell Gay took home the honor of being named the series MVP – well deserved – and we will now move on to face the LA Galaxy in Strangverse’s version of an El Traffico World Series. In other news, the Gainesville Gamecocks beat the Dearborn Dilly’s in a thrilling 7-game series to take home the Bush League Crown… 3B Sean Ruffino took home the Bush League Series MVP award. Yeah, I don't know who he is either...

I've gotta say - I never, in a million years, expected to go 8-0 through the 1st two rounds of the playoffs... WOW.

2077 Playoffs (World Series)

Los Angeles Galaxy (8-4) @ Los Angeles Lakers (8-0)
We didn’t play the Galaxy in 2077 – our interleague play was an odd mix of AL West & AL East teams – and, in all, we went 12-6 against American League opponents. Which means nothing, of course, but represents the only (non)meaningful statistic that we can hang our hat on. This Galaxy team had their struggles in 2077 but came on strong when it counted and managed to secure the last playoff spot after a 1-game playoff against the Golden State Warriors. This is an opportunity that they almost didn’t get and, so far in the 2077 postseason, is one that they’ve not squandered. Led by the #2 ranked player in the Majors, Heathcote Kinton is their sparkplug – a real “where he goes, we go” type that is capable of giving any pitching staff fits over a 7-game series… he’ll be one to watch for sure. They also have, in SP David Arney & SP Case Tunnell, two of the top hurlers in the league who are both capable of bringing shut-down stuff into any start. Here we are facing a club that can score, defend, and who have a starting 5 that was ranked 2nd in the AL – they’ll give us a run, and even with our recent string of dominant performances, they should offer us our toughest test yet.

Game 1: Medardo Garcia (1-0, 1.89) @ Paul Yeager (1-0, 1.54)
Win, 3-2
. Our 3-run outburst in the bottom of the 1st, Led by Ethan’s 2-run double, would be all we needed to secure our 9th victory in a row in these 2077 playoffs. Otto and Hamza both scored, OH HONG went 0 for 3 with 2 K’s in his first World Series game, and both Hamza & Otto jacked bags. Not a lot of offense in this pitcher’s duel – Yeager went 7, Barbaccia gets the hold, and Garcia earns his 1st postseason save.

Game 2: Case Tunnell (0-1, 3.54) @ Newton Weiser (0-0, 4.72)
Win, 5-3
. Our 10th in a row… Voorhis hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd, Newton went 7 strong, Barbaccia gets his 2nd save of the postseason, and Rajkumar went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Otto finished 1 for 3, another 0 for 3 day from OH HONG, 3 steals (2x for Otto, 1x for Ethan), and Otto hit his second highlight reel OF Assist with another laser to home – this time making Kinton his victim at the plate. Former Laker, Case Tunnel, couldn’t make it out of the 5th and gave up 5 runs during the game.

Game 3: Michael Brisk (0-0, 6.00) @ David Arney (3-0, 3.00)
Win, 9-3
. I don’t even really know what to say at this point – we’ve reeled off 11 straight wins in the playoffs and are peaking at the right time… Ethan went off – TWO HOMERS, FIVE RIBBIES – Brisky was vintage (worth every penny) in a 7-inning performance where he allows three runs and K’s 6, and Otto scored 3 times in the win. 3rd postseason save for Barbaccia, OH HONG gets two hits (finally), and Voorhis hit a double and a homer in this one. He also did his best Otto impression with an OF Assist to catch Takamoto at home.

Game 4: Dejuan Burns (1-0, 2.84) @ Marco Ortega (2-1, 3.52)
Loss, 3-1
. Well, the law of averages says you have to lose at least one game in the playoffs, right? Burns was solid, Ortega was better – and our bats finally went quiet in this one. Another hitless day for OH HONG, Dontrell drove in our only run, and Tony hit his 6th double of the post season. We acquitted ourselves nicely here, it’s just that the Galaxy managed to find a way to get it done.

Game 5: Paul Yeager (2-0, 1.45) @ Medardo Garcia (1-1, 2.49)
Win, 6-4
. LAKERS WIN – TWO-TIME CHAMPIONS OF THE MLB! Tony went 3 for 5 with TWO MORE DOUBLES, and HOMER, and 2 RBIs and HAMZA went 2 for 5 with a homer and 2 RBIs… OH HONG went 2 for 4, Otto scored a run (and hit a double), SAC BUNT for O. Mack, SAC FLY for Ethan, and some fine pitching out of the pen after Yeager got lifted after the 6th. What an absolute gem of a season for the La La’s – now the KINGS OF L.A.

Notes: Tony Voorhis won the World Series MVP honor – I knew I picked him up for a reason… I really am at a loss here – I honestly didn’t expect to go on this kind of run in the playoffs. In fact, I thought to make the series, despite our regular-season record, was unlikely to give the teams we’d have to go through to do it. Turns out we were up for it… what do I know, anyway? Heathcote Kinton, one of my favorite guys in the ‘Verse, only hit .211 in the series and Case & Arney were trash (10.38 & 16.88 ERAs, respectively). It’s not all good news though…
  • Paul Yeager wants to get paid – he’s voided the last year of his contract.
  • Tony Voorhis, never a city guy, has also voided the last year of his contract.
  • Otto Isaac announced his intent to test the free agent market.

Also, big changes in Vancouver – they’ve fired their GM & MLB Manager. I’m also moving them to the AL West, rebranding them the Vancouver Giants, and, subsequently, moving the Houston Dynamo into the NL West. Looking for a concept to rebrand my Houston club as well… haven’t found anything that I like yet though. This will give me an opportunity to track my own version of the Cascadia Cup each year in the AL West – which, I think, will be fun. Still toying with rebranding my Lakers as the Kings – not sure though… found this logo online and think that it could work. Maybe I’ll use it for a Championship Edition Ballcap to wear on the road – you know, to rub it in…

Some Salary Arbitration cases to consider…
  • Dejaun Burns – I’m going to let him go…
  • Dom Cooke – Offering 7.1M
  • Arnold Webster – Letting him go…
  • Mario Marshburn – Offering $787K
  • Lonzo Gonzo – Offering $880K
  • Ethan Mullens – Offering 14.8M

I’ve also extended $15M qualifying offers to Barbaccia, Otto, and Voorhis… I think that I’ll lose Otto in the offseason.

Lastly – some offseason awards…
AL MVP: Pablo Madera, 1B, Carolina Panthers - .373/24/103
NL MVP: Otto Issac, CF, LAL – His 2nd… .302/39/117
AL Pacheco: Abe Meinecke, Seattle Sounders – 20-9, 3.19, 220 K’s
NL Pacheco: Landon Sampson, San Francisco Seals – 13-7, 2.64, 247 K’s

Other Laker winners… Rajkumar took home the NL ROY award, Silver Slugger’s for Dom @ Catcher & Otto @ Center.

2078 Preseason

Offseason Moves:
  • Signed free agent CF Otto Isaac to a 3-year contract worth a total of $155,000,000.
  • Traded 23-year-old second baseman Owen Mack and 34-year-old third baseman Pepper Grant to the Portland Timbers, getting 25-year-old reliever Riley Valentine and 30-year-old reliever Justin Esson in return.
  • Traded 26-year-old left fielder Lonzo González and 23-year-old minor league second baseman Galeno Ortiz to the Brooklyn Citizens, getting 28-year-old left fielder David Pritcher and 22-year-old minor league third baseman Deangelo Pantoja in return.
  • Traded 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Byung-Joo Nam to the Houston Dynamo, getting 24-year-old minor league right fielder Aris Anaconda in return.
  • Traded 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Hudson Dorsch to the Montreal Wanderers, getting 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Orlando Vasquez in return.
  • Signed international amateur CF Martín Bramasco out of Dominican Republic to a minor league contract.
  • Traded 27-year-old shortstop Hamza McDonnell and 33-year-old reliever Ferdinand Loving to the Toronto Reds BC, getting 26-year-old shortstop Julian Goodwin and 27-year-old second baseman Richard McTaggart in return.

Of Note: I rebranded the team – we are now known as the Los Angeles Kings. Tony Voorhis signed with the Brooklyn Citizens, we’ll get a supplemental 1st round pick for it – I’m cool with that, the fans, however, are not. Arnold Webster, who we declined to offer Salary Arbitration, landed in Vancouver – early indications are that he’ll start at first for the new-look Giants… Derek Jeter retired, leaving only Donny in the Bigs – he signed a 1-year, $7.8M deal with the 76ers. Jules Winfield also retired – this one bums me out, but it was time. Dejuan Burns managed to finagle Minnesota out of $17.2M to pitch for the North Stars – surprised to see him command such a high salary, but I did pay Brisky more than that – so, maybe I shouldn’t be. Julen Morales left Phoenix and is now a Montreal Wanderer - $21M over two years… would love to see him recapture some of the magic he had in Los Angeles… Current King, 3B Dontrell Gay, was named the smartest player in baseball – apparently, he has an IQ of 147… listen, I’ve seen the guy light flatulence in the clubhouse, so, yeah, I’m not so sure about this one… Former Angelino, 3B Pepper Grant, partnered with teammate Peter Parrow to open up a nightclub in downtown Portland called Club Velocity – it’s a 24-hour music venue that will showcase internationally-renowned DJs… nice to see that Pepper is fitting right in with his new teammates, I’ll sure miss that guy (had to do it to make room in the budget to keep Otto)… Speaking of Otto – his weight is down to 150lbs (he’s 6’0”) after a new Unconventional workout routine led to disastrous results – he’s going back to his old routine, I hope he puts the weight back on… and lastly, Saul Guzman was picked up by Toronto just in time for Opening Day – I was getting nervous, I love the Gooz and am happy to see that he landed on an MLB club.

Wait, maybe that wasn’t everything… Pepper was suspended by his new Club in Portland after team officials finally had enough with how much energy he was spending on his new nightclub. He’ll miss the first 5 games of the season.

The 2078 Lineup:
  • 2B Richard McTaggart – the prototypical leadoff guy… hits for average, good baserunner. Unfortunately, he’s only average in the field – but his media savviness is unparalleled, which is perfect for Los Angeles.
  • RF Ethan Mullens – our max effort LA stalwart – back in the fold to wreck things in 2078.
  • CF Otto Isaac – the man, the myth, the legend… still needs to gain that weight back though. I’m worried about him, seems to be wasting away and is only 145lbs now.
  • RF Rajkumar Kosciusko – he became our sparkplug late in 2077 and looks to stake his claim to stardom after winning the ROY award last season.
  • 3B Dontrell Gay – outplayed Pepper and took over 3B during the second half of the 2077 regular season – he’s our everyday guy now and may be our best player when it is all said and done.
  • C Dom Cooke – he’s an expert at handling our staff, and in 2078 may have the best one we’ve ever put together during my tenure.
  • 1B Oh Hong – great contact hitter with some pop who can’t run to save his life. He’s beloved here in LA – we expect big things this year.
  • LF Joseph Zody – after languishing in Compton for the last 3 seasons, Zody gets his first shot being the everyday guy out in left. He’s solid.
  • SS Julian Goodwin – capable of drawing a walk and that’s about it at the plate, phenomenal in the field though.

The Staff:
  1. Paul Yeager – He was great for us in 2077, looking for more of the same in 2078.
  2. Newton Weiser – Solid, dependable, and still getting better.
  3. Aiden Jensen – we are counting on him being ready for primetime – he had his struggles in 2077, time for the takeover to begin.
  4. Michael Brisk – an LA institution who needs no introduction
  5. Kenny Ibuna – a solid #5 with good stuff and even better control. Can’t hold runners to save his life.

The Closer:
  • Steven Barbaccia – he became the man in 2077, is still the man in 2078.

2078 Season (4/4 – 4/13)

2078 Season (4/4 – 4/6)
Los Angeles Kings @ Houston Dynamo

We’ll start the 2078 campaign, and our quest to win our 3rd straight World Series, in the home of our newest divisional rival. In an offseason that brought a lot of changes, Houston’s move to the National League, along with Vancouver’s move to the American League, was among the biggest. We’ll welcome them to our league with a new middle infield, a revamped staff, and without our 2077 World Series MVP, Tony Voorhis, who signed with Brooklyn as a free agent. We’ll face Abe Meinecke, the reigning 2077 AL Pacheco winner, to start the season – Abe signed a 3-year, $115M contract with Houston in the offseason. It was a big, bold move from Houston – who, despite their free-agent aggressiveness, still looks more like a team who will lose 100 games than they do a team who could contend.

1 of 162: Paul Yeager (0-0, 0.00) @ Abe Meinecke (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 6-2
. Julian Goodwin’s debut was a success – 3 for 4 with a double & a run, Yeager picked up where he left off in 2077 with an 8-inning effort where only two runs squeeze by, and Rajkumar went 3 for 4 with a HR, and RBI, and 2 runs. LF Joseph Zody was injured during the game – he’ll miss 5 games with an oblique strain. An unfortunate result for him – he’s been waiting in the wings for a while now and will look to return as quickly as possible.

Elsewhere: Dejuan Burns, in his first start for his new club, led the Minnesota North Stars to victory over 7.1 innings of work where he allows only one run to plate and strikes out 6. Minnesota defeated the San Diego Chargers by a score of 4-1 – the contest was a pitcher’s duel until Minnesota managed to get to the Charger bullpen – San Diego Starter, Josh Allen, pitched great over 7-innings and only allowed 1 run to score.

2 of 162: Newton Weiser (0-0, 0.00) @ Josiah Kawka (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 8-5
. McTaggart went 3 for 5 from the leadoff spot, Ethan hit a double, a homer, and drove two in, and Weiser got the win despite allowing 5 runs for the game. Barbaccia picked up his 1st save of the year, Otto scored twice, and OH HONG put his 1st TWO RBIs on the board in 2078. RP Roldan Freitas, who has spent 5 seasons working on his craft in Compton, got his first relief work for the big club and did not disappoint of 2.1 innings of work – he registered 3 K’s before handing it off to our closer.

Elsewhere: More silliness out of Minnesota… Yoshimasa Sugawara, who has spent the last two seasons in the Bush League with the Hagerstown Hummers (and the 2077 BL ROY Winner), has had quite a journey recently. His contract was purchased from the San Marcos Supremos prior to the 2078 season by the San Francisco Seals, who then lost him to Minnesota in the Rule 5 Draft (where he was selected 7th overall). After today’s 3 for 5, TWO HR, TWO RBI, and TWO-RUN performance in Minnesota’s 9-4 win over the San Diego Chargers, I think it is safe to say that it has all been worth it for Yoshi – it’ll be interesting to see his career progress.

3 of 162: Aiden Jensen (0-0, 0.00) @ Pete Taylor (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 6-2
. We start the 2078 campaign with a ROAD SWEEP! McTaggart was great again, 3 for 5, HR, THREE BATTED IN, and Aiden only gave up two earned in 8-innings of work (4 K’s too…) to help us secure our 3rd straight win. Save #2 for Barbaccia, Otto gets his first RBI of the season, and we stole a couple of bags (Richard McT & Otto each get their first SB of the season).

2078 Season (4/7 – 4/9)
San Diego Chargers (1-2, .333, 5th NL West) @ Los Angeles Kings (3-0, 1.000, 1st NL West)

After our ROAD SWEEP, we would travel home to perform in front of our home crowd for the first time in 2078. The Chargers, like Houston, have the look of a terrible club – and like the Dynamo, also made a big free-agent splash with their signing of Free Agent SP Josh Allen to a 3-year, $64.8M contract. What they didn’t do was address any of their other deficiencies in the offseason – it’ll be another long season in San Diego as they are expected to battle the Dynamo for 5th place in the NL West.

4 of 162: George Geiss (0-0, 0.00) @ Michael Brisk (0-0, 0.00)
Loss, 13-5
. Somebody should have told Brisky that the 2078 campaign had started – he laid an egg here… 5 earned over 3.1 innings of work. Our bullpen was no better – 8 more would plate before this thing was in the books. Our pitching, on the whole, was really, really bad. OH HONG committed an error at 1B and hit his 2nd double, SAC FLY for Dom, and 4 stolen bases – just not enough goodness on display for us to squeeze out a win. This was not the home debut of our new look Kings that we were looking for – that much is for certain.

5 of 162: Artyom Fadeyev (0-0, 0.00) @ Kenny Ibuna (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 4-1
. Ibuna went down with an injury in the 2nd frame – not ideal, we await the official determination on its extent, McT kept up his torrid start to the 2078 campaign – 3 for 4, HR, 3 ribbies – and Joseph Zody, back in the fold, went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Another save for Barbaccia and Ethan finally registers his first steal of the season.

6 of 162: Josh Allen (0-0, 1.29) @ Paul Yeager (1-0, 2.25)
Loss, 7-6
. Yeager is uneven over 6 innings, gives up 5 for the game, Otto went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, and Rajkumar registers his first steal of the season. Tough homestand for us against a poor club – but, that’s baseball. With the loss, we’ll head to Minnesota North Stars on their turf – they are off to a smashing start to the 2078 campaign and find themselves in a 3-way tie atop the NL West table with Phoenix and ourselves.

2077 Season (4/11 – 4/13)
Los Angeles Kings (4-2, .667, t-1st NL West) @ Minnesota North Stars (4-2, .667, t-1st NL West)

While they certainly have come out of the gates hot, the line on Minnesota is that they should fade after the stretch and ultimately settle into another ho-hum 4th or 5th place finish in the NL West. It seems that the baseball pundits are no longer fooled by the poppycock that Shawna and her brain trust spew at the outset of each MLB campaign – fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice… Sure, there are things to like about Minnesota – the offense looks to be great and the Dejuan signing should help their rotation. The problem with them is depth – they don’t have any… yet. They have managed to stock their minor league system with a sturdy number of prospects and have the 3rd best MiLB system in the game – so, maybe the future is bright, or maybe they’ll squander it all on a fashionable trade that doesn’t get them the return on investment they were looking for. Time will tell.

7 of 162: Newton Weiser (1-0, 8.44) @ Octavio Cervera (0-1, 5.68)
Win, 5-3
. McT – still clutch with another 3 for 5 day, Ethan drives one in, and Weiser, despite some early struggles, managed to navigate his early control issues to secure his second win of the season. Barbaccia gets another save, Otto drove in his 3rd run on a SAC FLY, and Otto records a double-play with an OF Assist when he catches LF Soloman Lawrence at home.

Elsewhere: Saul Guzman recorded his 1st Save of 2078, and the 200th Save of his career, in Toronto’s 7-1 win over the Carolina Panthers. He went 3-innings and only allowed two hits in the effort. Your boy has been roaming the Strangeverse Universe like Caine from Kung Fu since leaving the Lakers (now Kings) in 2075 and has spent time pitching for San Francisco, Portland, Houston, and Seattle before landing in Toronto during the offseason.

Name: Saul.png
Views: 87
Size: 293.4 KB

Note: SP Kenny Ibuna is out for 4-5 months with a torn labrum. We’ve recalled Trevor Dotson from Compton to replace him in the rotation.

8 of 162: Aiden Jensen (1-0, 2.08) @ Damon Smith (0-0, 0.00)
Loss, 6-5
. Aiden struggled early, Garcia got walked off in the bottom of the 9th, Dontrell went 3 for 5 with a solo-HR, and Otto hit his 1st homer of 2078 – a 3-run blast in the top of the 5th to tie it up a 4 each. Tough loss – we need to secure the series win here to take control of the table.

9 of 162: Trevor Dotson (0-0, 0.00) @ Matt Olston (1-0, 5.14)
Win, 10-9
. Yoshi Sugawara was at it again for Minnesota – 3 for 5 with a double and a homer, but it was OH HONG’s RBI Double in the top of the 11th that would secure the win for us here – he went 4 for 6 in the contest. Rajkumar hit his 2nd HR of the season, we hit 4 doubles as a team, registered seven 2-out RBIs, and even got two triples in this one – a much-needed series win before we head out to Brooklyn for a 4-game parlay.

Elsewhere: LF Jo Jo Jackson, of the Dallas Cowboys, went 2 for 2 with TWO HOMERS and FOUR RBI in their 7-4 win over Vancouver. Jo Jo, formerly known as Bo, came to Strangeverse as a free agent during the 2077 Season due to a rip in the space-time continuum – he’s not a world-beater, and we don’t expect him to take over here… all Jo Jo does is hit bombs. And Strikeout – he does that a lot too…

Glad to see Oh Hong starting to get hot at the plate.

2078 Season (4/14 – 4/30)

2078 Season (4/14 – 4/17)
Los Angeles Kings (6-3, .667, 2nd NL West) @ Brooklyn Citizens (3-6, .334, 6th NL East)

So far, in 2078, Brooklyn looks pedestrian – terrible, even. Their offense is in shambles – rated 12th in over half the categories – and their pitching is no better. Tony Voorhis is off to a good start in his new home, though, and is hitting .324 with a homer and 5 RBIs in his shiny new Brooklyn kit, and Merl Crawford, after a disastrous 1st start of the season, has seemingly regained his control in time for his 2nd outing – we’ll see if that holds in the 2nd game of this 4 game series. Brooklyn was picked to win the NL East in the preseason predictions – so, maybe, they will work into their form in short order and start to put together the type of streaks that will allow them to climb the table and take their rightful seat at the top. Or, maybe the baseball pundits, as is their wont, was wrong – maybe Brooklyn just isn’t as good as they thought – in fact, maybe they’re terrible… a sham of a ballclub that will not rise to become what the sum of their parts suggests that they could be. Whichever direction they follow as we navigate the 2078 campaign… here’s to hoping they don’t start it over these next 4 days.

10 of 162: Michael Brisk (0-1, 13.50) @ Troy Helm (0-0, 22.09)
Win, 2-1
. Brisky came correct over 6 innings of work and registered 8 K’s to go with his one earned run, McT went 3 for 4 (again), and Barbaccia continues to display tip-top form in securing his 5th save of this young campaign. Otto scores and collects an RBI, Oh Hong got a couple of hits (singles – including an RBI single… his 7th RBI this year (he’s 3rd on the club in that department behind McT and Otto)), we secured a Brisk-Marshburn-Hong DP. Good start to our 4-game slog in the Borough of Brooklyn. If we win the next 3, I’ll potion the mayor to dub our club the Kings of Kings County, NY.

11 of 162: Paul Yeager (1-1, 4.50) @ Merl Crawford (1-1, 5.65)
Loss, 10-3
. Crawford had us on a string – 9 innings, 8 hits, 3 earned & 5 K’s for the Brooklyn Ace and Tony Voorhis made us pay in the bottom of the 1st with a GRAND SLAM… take that club who didn’t think I was worth the money. Yeager got destroyed, Sandoval also got destroyed, we left 5 on base, and our lone highlight of note came off of a solo HR for our backup catcher. Also, I’ve instructed my new Assistant, Ms. Foggy Finkelstein, to destroy the document I had her draft demanding that we be declared the Kings of King County, NY – so much for that idea.

12 of 162: Newton Weiser (2-0, 6.35) @ Dontrell McNeil (0-0, 4.61)
Loss, 5-2
. Outside of Dom, who went 2 for 3 with a double, a homer, and RBI, and 2 runs – we are, once again, terrible in this one. McNeil toyed with our offense over 8 innings of work, Roan Munoz hit two-out (both off of Newton), and we left 8 runners stranded. We’re listless, uninspired, and, really, just not very good at baseball lately – plenty of runway – sure – but, I hate losing. Makes me fighty.

Elsewhere: SP Orlando Vasquez, of your CITY OF COMPTON RAIDERS, gave us a stellar start today against the Grackles in Austin… he went 8 innings with 4 K’s 3 hits, and only 1 earned run in our 4-3 loss. We were walked off in the bottom of the 10th by a run-scoring single. We picked up Orlando in a trade with the Montreal Wanderers for one of our (arguably better) pitching prospects – and if I’m being honest (why wouldn’t I be), the deciding factor was the fact that I think his mean-looking facegen is a better fit for my upstart minor league club. The kid is solid – might make the big club one day as an MR – who knows…

13 of 162: Aiden Jensen (1-0, 5.40) @ Les Trost (1-1, 3.52 ERA)
Canceled. The weather in Brooklyn wouldn’t cooperate. I’m fine with that as we would have likely lost this one given our current form anyway. Instead will enjoy the day off and prepare to head to back home where we will welcome the Montreal Wanderers to town for four games – they’re hovering near .500 so far, maybe their lack of baseball acumen will help us get back on track. We need a good April and so far are just sort of treading water instead of dominating all comers.

2078 Season (4/18 – 4/21)
Montreal Wanderers (5-7, .417, 6th NL East) @ Los Angeles Kings (7-5, .583, 2nd NL West)

At this point of the season, as the teams start to get into the groove of this long slog of a baseball season, we are all really the same. Montreal, despite sitting in last place, has planted themselves firmly in the middle of nearly every statistical category worth tracking – 6th everywhere. Their pitching has been good even though Julen Morales, their key offseason acquisition, is taking his sweet time to get into a groove. And their offense is mostly humming even though C Rex Engelstad has yet to string together a run of good offensive games. Montreal, like us, is taking their time so far – easing their way into the 2078 campaign and trying to get as many of their players on the same page as they can so they can close out April on a bit of a run.

13 of 162: Dylan Bauer (0-1, 6.43) @ Aiden Jensen (1-0, 5.40)
Loss, 11-9
. Ethan was clutch – 3 for 3, TWO DOUBLES, a 3-run HR, and 5 RBIs – but his effort wasn’t enough because Aiden got shelled early and often in this one – he gave us 2.2 innings of ineptitude (5 runs earned) and the bullpen took their cues from him and gave up another 6 runs to close it out. Two SAC FLIES (Goodwin & Gay) and only one strikeout for the team – the offense was fine, the pitching was complete trash. Just a dumpster fire out on the bump today.

Elsewhere: So-so prospect, CF Lucas Keller, of the San Jose Sharks (by way of the Golden State Warriors) hit for the cycle in their 13-11 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. He went 5 for 5, with one of everything, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs (he even got a walk – a cycle+). Keller was Oakland’s 1st pick (3rd overall) out of Texas in 2075, but has lost some of his luster in the minors – the OSA ratings has him topping out at 59, but my scout, ever the brigand, has pegged him for a low-ceiling 50 overall type guy – solid, good for an all-star appearance one day, maybe, but on the whole a forgettable major leaguer when it is all said and done.

14 of 162: Jaxson Mottola (2-0, 2.65) @ Trevor Dotson (0-0, 4.76)
Loss, 8-3
. Overpowered again – the Montreal offense is throwing a party in LA it seems. DJ Wilders put up a GRAND SLAM on Dotson and outside of Rajkumar’s 3-run jack there is nothing of any note to report here. Unless our TWO ERRORS count.

Elsewhere: LF Jayden Silverman, of the Ridgemont Community College Tasty Waves hit for the cycle in a 15-12 win over the BYU Cougars and recorded 9 RBIs in the effort. Silverman is a mid-ceiling outfielder who projects to develop some pop and joined Ridgemont CC all the way from Brooklyn, NY. He hit .342 as a freshman in 2077 and is currently hitting .337 with 8 homers in the 22 games he’s played in 2088. He’s putting a memorable season together for sure.

15 of 162: Prior Balazs (0-1, 9.00) @ Michael Brisk (1-1, 5.79)
Loss, 9-3
. Ruh-roh… the wheels have officially come off. Our pitching is in complete shambles. Brisky got rocked for 6, C Rex Engelstad appears to have awoken from his slumber, and the Montreal offense is taking it to us. We did steal three bases today – so, yeah, whatever.

16 of 162: Nat Millard (2-1, 2.91) @ Paul Yeager (1-2, 6.27)
Canceled due to bad weather – thank you, lord! Saved by rain here… it’s a good thing too – we were on the precipice of being embarrassed in front of our hometown faithful.

Note: I took the opportunity to meet with my new pitching coach after the official decision to cancel our 3rd game against Montreal was made – see, after 15 games played, we have a serious problem on our hands given that our Starting Five is ranked dead last in the National League. We hired our new pitching coach, Thomas Hall, in the offseason after he had spent 5 years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was highly regarded, had made the playoffs with that club in each of those 5 years and even contributed to their 2075 title. In each of those seasons the Jacksonville staff was ranked no lower than 3rd – so what’s the deal here? Long story short – Hall explained some of the changes he intends to install, shared his thoughts on each starter’s current troubles, and carefully laid out his plans to fix each issue he’d previously detailed. It was all very thorough – detailed & well thought out – this guy talks a great game and he has some time to get this thing under control, but, to be clear, if this thing doesn’t come back around soon – I won’t fire him, I’ll trade him to the Bush League.

2078 Season (4/22 – 4/24)
San Francisco Seals (6-9, .400, 5th NL West) @ Los Angeles Lakers (7-8, .467, 3rd NL West)

Outside of their Ace, Landon Sampson, the Seals pitching staff looks nearly as inept as our own – in fact, if not for our complete and total inability to pitch at even a AAA-level, they’d be considered the worst staff in baseball. But – they are not, because we exist and are currently occupying that unenviable space with gusto. Their offense, conversely, has been solid in the early stages of the 2078 campaign – they are scoring runs at a respectable clip (4th NL), hitting for power (t-1st NL), and are doing a good job putting men on base. There are some holes in their lineup, to be sure, they’ve struggled against finesse pitchers and have a tendency to strike out more than they should – but on the whole, and considering our struggles on the bump, this is a dangerous offense that, while not firing on all cylinders, could give us some fits if our starters can’t dial it in soon.

16 of 162: Landon Sampson (2-0, 2.50) @ Paul Yeager (1-2, 6.27)
Loss, 6-2
. Yeager showed glimpses of his 2077 form – 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 K’s – but the bullpen gave up the ghost in the 7th inning when SF RF Hayden Kimmet hit a 2-run double off of Joshua Moeller that would prove to be the difference-maker here. Otto went 0 for 4 with 4 K’s, we committed two costly errors, and fanned 13 times as a team.

17 of 162: Max Harrington (0-0, 7.64) @ Newton Weiser (2-1, 7.47)
Win, 5-2
. Newton pitched a gem – 10 K’s, 1 earned, and only 3 hits in 8.1 innings of work – and Dontrell Gay went 2 for 3 with a double, a homer, 2 RBI, 2 runs, and a walk. Ethan, Dom, and Lloyd (he’s replacing Zody in the OF for now) each batted one in, OH HONG hit his 4th double, and we got two stolen bags, including the 8th on the year for Ethan.

18 of 162: Adam White (1-2, 7.16) @ Aiden Jensen (1-1, 7.53)
Win, 4-3
. Aiden gave us 8 K’s and 1 earned over 8 innings and Dontrell hit the game-winning walk-off HR in the bottom of the 11th to secure the series win. Otto put a 3-run homer out of the park, Barbaccia committed an error and earned his 1st blown save of the year, we got a critical double play in the top of the 9th that stopped San Francisco from taking the lead in that frame.

2078 Season (4/25 – 4/27)
Los Angeles Kings (9-, .500, 2nd NL West) @ Phoenix Suns (12-7, .632, 1st NL West)

Phoenix appears to be working their way into prime form early in this campaign – they’ve been good everywhere except in Home Runs (where they rank 10th in the NL) and Bullpen ERA (where they rank 7th). They’ve already suffered 3 injuries to some of their key players – SP Patrick Keith is out for two months, 3B Homer Wingard will be out for 5 weeks, and CF Jason Bland has about 3 more weeks of rehab before returning to the fold. But even with their injury woes – the Suns are winning and have already shown off some of the depth that makes them a serious contender to finally punch their way through the National League on their way to the World Series. It’s, of course, too early to talk favorites – we’ll save that type of chatter for August/September – but Phoenix has already shown the look of a serious threat and by the time 2078 is in the books, I expect they will play a big part in the story of this season. Here we meet them on their turf for our first series against them this season – our form is too loose to expect much from our squad, but these are the games that you get up for, the ones capable of lifting you out of whatever kind of rote malaise you find yourself mired in.

19 of 162: Trevor Dotson (0-1, 7.20) @ Teagan Rachel (2-0, 4.58)
Loss, 3-2
. Walked off in the 11th on a Zach Martin run-scoring single despite Dotson’s best efforts – he went 7 innings, allowed only a single run, and struck 5 out… Otto brought one around on a SAC FLY, Ethan stole 3 bags, and Barbaccia blows his second consecutive save opportunity.

20 of 162: Michael Brisk (1-2, 6.75) @ Crusher Melendez (1-2, 2.57)
Loss, 4-2
. Brisky pitched fine – just not fine enough, our offense has all but disappeared, Otto left 5 runners stranded, and we have officially dropped two games below .500 – look, this isn’t the most disastrous start of all-time, but it will be a difficult month to bounce back from if we can’t figure out how to get our guys back on the same page.

Elsewhere (file under: salt in the wound): Current North Star, former King, SP Dejuan Burns pitched a NO-NO against the Houston Dynamo in an 8-0 victory for Minnesota. During the performance, Dejuan walked 3 batters and K’d 8. This is a historic moment for any pitcher and we are happy for Dejuan here – but given our recent pitching woes, this one feels like seeing an ex-girlfriend out on a date with the man of her dreams… we feel left out like we’ve made a terrible mistake – fair play to Burns, happy to see him flourish in Minnesota.

21 of 162: Paul Yeager (1-2, 5.11) @ Jack Sanchez-Flores (3-0, 3.03)
Win, 12-6
. Okay, cool – we woke up a bit in the one and our sticks looked lively. OH HONG went 3 for 4 with a HR, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs, Dontrell scored three times, and Dom put out two solo shots. SAC FLY for Goodwin, SB for Otto (he also scored), and a good team win to avoid embarrassment on National TV.

2078 Season (4/29 – 4/30)
Houston Dynamo (10-12, .455, 4th NL West) @ Los Angeles Kings (10-11, .476, 3rd NL West)

Two more games to close out the month, with the 3rd game of this series scheduled for May Day. Currently, Houston could be considered the better team in this series – they are hitting for average (2nd in the NL), have the 2nd rated Bullpen ERA, and are ranked 2nd in pWAR. Sure, I expect things to settle down – I expect us to take our rightful place at the top of the table and that Houston will sink like a rock to the depths of the National League – but, best-laid plans and all… who knows if my expectations were just untenable flights of fancy where my delusion of grandeur was not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Our club is like a teenager going through puberty – no sense of self, confused.

22 of 162: Pete Taylor (1-2, 6.56) @ Newton Weiser (3-1, 5.25)
Loss, 6-1
. I mean – what do you say? We scored one run, Weiser got roughed up, and our club is suddenly dropping like the rock we had pegged Houston for this year.

Elsewhere: Heathcote Kinton (LAG) got into an altercation with RP Robinson Padilla of the Seattle Sounders – after Padilla pegged Kinton as retaliation for one of his teammates prancing around the diamond after a homerun, Heathcote rushed him, punched him, took the mount, and got a few more bad ones in before his teammates were able to pull him off of Padilla. 5-games seems light, but, he’s a superstar… so, money talks, I guess.

23 of 162: Gabe Uruburu (2-1, 4.03) @ Aiden Jensen (1-1, 5.24)
Loss, 3-0
. No. Aiden was good, our offense left their bats in the airport. Complete game shutout for Gabe here – and suddenly we are the worst team in baseball.

Well – yikes… a 10-13 start to the season for the defending champs… queue the jokes about our rebranding ourselves to the Kings.

I don't have time to keep up with everything you write here as this is one prolific, and well documented, thread. I love it when I run across something like the Megan post that was very creative and amusing. Good stuff.

Thanks! Her first season as the GM in San Marcos is about to kick off...

2078 Season (Bush League Notes)

Megan, my former assistant, has been busy building her club in San Marcos. She signed 30+ free agents and has even managed to sell 9 contracts to the major league… setting her cash flow up nicely. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed – in addition to the messages I’ve received from my MLB GM peers that have nearly all started with, “why’d you ever let her go…”, the baseball pundits, whose livelihood includes covering the Bush League, have declared her club the favorite to win the Justice Division. They are the clear preseason favorites, but, it should be noted that the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai & Decatur Donnybrooks came in right behind her in the poll and will look to challenge for the divisional crown as well. Of course, with the MLB taking notice of her scouting abilities, several of her top signees have been sold off to the vultures from the top league… including last year's BL ROY winner, Yoshimasa Sugawara, who is currently starting at first for the Minnesota North Stars and is hitting .351 with 3 homers and 5 RBIs. Megan’s club will start their season off in Gainesville where her Supremos will attempt to wrangle in the Gamecocks over a 3-game road set.

San Marcos Supremos @ Gainesville Gamecocks
1 of 140: Zach Schmidt (0-0, 0.00) @ Nolan Wilkins (0-0, 0.00)
Win, 7-1
. A fantastic result for Megan’s legit San Marcos debut – with the club that she’s built for the 2078 BL Season… Schmidt went 5 innings, struck out 6, let only one reach home, and picks up his 1st career win in the Bush League. She’d also get a 4 RBI day from 1B Christopher Merrill and a 2 for 3 performance from 3B Nolan Richard that included a HR and 2 RBI. Not too bad…

Note: SP Zach Schmidt spent 10 years bouncing back and forth between AAA and the MLB for Philadelphia and Golden State before signing with San Marcos in the offseason as a free agent. He graduated from Notre Dame in 2065 and was drafted 177th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers that same year – he joins San Marcos on a mission to soak up as many sunny afternoons as he can before hanging up his cleats to join the rest of us working stiffs.

While I’m here… let’s just go ahead and finish off that set against Houston, shall we? I mean, we’re basically playing like a Bush League Club anyway…
24 of 162: Abe Meinecke (2-3, 4.29) @ Michael Brisk (1-3, 6.00)
Win, 9-2
. Brisky gave us a CG, 9-hit, 2-run effort that included 9 K’s from everyone’s favorite Lambo owner… OH HONG hit a 3-run jack, Dom drove two in, Otto went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run, and Rajkumar hit his 5th double for the year. A solid effort from the team here – and a much-needed clutch performance from Brisky.

Back to San Marcos…
2 of 140: Dominic James (0-0, 0.00) @ Logan Squirrell (0-0, 0.00)
Loss, 3-0
. Shutout by Squirrell over 5 innings and victimized by Gainesville 3B Nathan West who hit a monstrous 3-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd that would prove to be the game-winner in this one. At 41-years old, Nathan West has had a long professional career… he graduated from the University of Miami in 2058 with a degree in home economics and was drafted 78th overall by the Chicago Fire in that same year. In all, he would spend 11 years wearing #77 for the Fire (though most of his time was spent toiling in Columbus) before packing up his belongings and heading to Phoenix in 2071… since then he’s bounced around quite a bit – he’s made stops in Toronto, San Diego, St. Louis, and Carolina before becoming a Bush League mainstay. He’s made stops in Beaumont, Columbia, Naperville, Shreveport, and now Gainesville – but this game was his first opportunity to play professional baseball in front of his hometown of San Marcos, TX.

Well – through two games, Megan’s new look Supremos of San Marcos look, well, OK. World-beaters in game one & back to earth in their second game (so, basically, they are a baseball team)… I think her new club will win it all this season – I have faith. Next up: back to our regularly scheduled programming.
