Meet the Mets, but please don't beat them too badly
This is the story of a Mets fan who wants to see how far a team comprised of only former Mets players can get in Perfect Team. Don't expect any of the same vitriol I bring to my Patriots series, because that's simply not going to happen. I am going to force myself to have fun with this one, because this Mets team is sure to be better than the lousy real life one, especially if I can compile enough points to get some of the best Mets players.
RULES - No live or future legend players - Any former Met is eligible for the team as long as they have played at least one game for the franchise - Magus978 must have fun, otherwise he will be forced to attend another Mets game this season (Spoiler: He can't afford it!) (HEY! It wasn't all bad! I got the deGrom bobblehead, and I got to see two trainwreck bullpens!) Will post roster momentarily, because I don't imagine there being anymore additions before tomorrow, unless I'm adding as insurance in case a few players fail.

Your Amazin' Mets will begin their inaugural season in Iron .243, and based on the team makeup and the work I did during entry pool to ensure our pitching is as good as it can be, I think we can win at least 90 games. When I checked the league out, I didn't see any obvious whales, so there's a good opportunity for promotion on the first try. The only problem I could see happening is that I'll have some tough decisions when it's time to upgrade. I do want to get a better Piazza as my DH, since he won't ever be useful behind the plate. I also want to add a version of the more prominent players from the 1969 and 1986 teams.
On the other hand, I'm not going to be bothered if we hang around here for awhile. The more points we can amass, the better!

Chan Ho Park couldn't even last 1 day with the club, just like real life. After a string of bad appearances, the Korean has been sent to the reserves in favor of Wayne Twitchell, who made 33 appearances for the Mets and pitching to a 5.23 ERA in 1979 before being purchased in August of that year by the Mariners.
Yes, reliever pickin's are not great, so starters have to be relievers. Woof.

The Amazin's first day of proper PT play ends at 13-12 on a 3 game losing streak, already losing touch with the excellent New Zealand Silver Ferns, who have started 21-6 and look like a team finally ready to escape Iron. New York's attention is already firmly set towards a shot at a wildcard opportunity.
Looking at the early trends in the league, it seems like offense is taking an early advantage. Standout Mets performers include Keith Hernandez, hitting .343 with 5 HR and 18 RBI. Mike Piazza is doing Mike Piazza things, hitting .264, but making up for it with power numbers, hitting 7 HR's and driving in 21 runs. Gus Bell is also having a very strong start to the season, hitting .305 with 6 HR and 21 RBI. Pitching-wise, starting pitchers have a collective ERA of 4.31, which is actually in the upper half of the National Conference. Frank Viola setting the pace for the rotation with a 2-1 record and a 2.51 ERA. Mickey Lolich, Frank Lary, Doc Medich, and reliever Terry Leach also have two wins. The bullpen's been solid so far, pitching to a 2.92 ERA, good for 5th in the conference. With just 750 points at the moment, no help is on the way. However, having gained 1,330 points today, there's belief that this team can generate enough points the rest of the week that a key upgrade could be attainable.

In their inaugural season in the Perfect Team pyramid, the New York Mets are playing below expectations at 51-46. They have fallen off the pace in the division and the wildcard, and should expect to be playing in Iron again next season. They did have two all stars in Mickey Lolich (10-6, 2.85) & Frank Lary (9-6, 3.32). However, neither got into the game.
Offensively, Kevin McReynolds (.203, 12 HR, 39 RBI) has been a huge disappointment. Such a disappointment that the team made a panic buy to replace him against righties in Shawn Green. The Mets finally got rid of poor-performing Terry Leach in favor of Mike Marshall, eliminating a huge hole in their bullpen.

The Amazin's finished their first season at 87-75 after a second half swoon which saw them fall out of relevance by September. However, a new season is here and so far the Mets are once again thriving. At 37-18, and with a few shiny new players, the Mets are looking like a promotion contender. They are currently top of the NC Central division by 6 games over the Redmond Birds, and the 3rd seed in the National Conference.
Top performers include Mickey Lolich, who is 8-2 with a 3.30 ERA. Tommy Davis, hitting .289 with 12 HR and 35 RBI, and Roy McMillan who is hitting .312 and has 4 triples so far on the season. New acquisitions include Warren Spahn (88), who made 20 appearances (19 starts) for the Mets in 1965, his final season in the majors. Unfortunately, he's off to a bad start, having lost both his starts and not looking very good in either. On the flip side, Al Leiter (88), who was a Met from 1998 to 2004, has gone 2-0 with a pair of complete games. He has yet to give up a run, and has only conceded 7 hits. Needless to say this cannot last, but Leiter has definitely made a great start. Another impactful new addition has been Ron Darling (80). This 1986 World Champion has done everything the Mets has asked of him. In 10 appearances (9 starts), he's 4-2 with a 2.57 ERA. He only lost his spot in the rotation because Warren Spahn joined the club. With how Warren's pitching, our impatient manager may give him that spot right back and banish the underperforming Spahn to the bullpen.

Winning breeds winning, which also breeds confidence. In this case, the New York Mets are feeling a ton of confidence. The Amazin's are winners of 17 straight, and hold a commanding 12.5 game lead in their division.
The team had 6 All-Star selections. Pat Zachry, Ron Darling, Mike Marshall, Mike Piazza, Keith Hernandez, and Tommy Davis. You could have made a compelling case for John Franco, Mickey Lolich, and David Cone as well. New signings Warren Spahn and Al Leiter continue to settle in, with Spahn making a big improvement. He's gone 6-3 in his last 10 starts, and has cut his ERA down to 4.14. Leiter has seen a few bumps in his road, but he still boasts a solid 5-3 record and an even more impressive 2.03 ERA in his 12 starts. The team is saving up their points to afford a massive upgrade. They sit on 4,349 points, and are not prepared to spend them at this time.

That won't happen anytime soon, if at all. I have other places I wanna upgrade first, and plus I'm keeping an eye out for any Cleon Jones cards that hit the market.
The streak ended in my first game, but 4,000 points is a nice prize for a big run.

Amazin's Clinch NC Central, Secure First Postseason Trip With their 4-3 win over the Arlington Snappers yesterday, the inevitable has happened, as the New York Mets have clinched the National Conference Central Division crown. They clinched it at Shea Stadium thanks to a 7th inning Mike Piazza sacrifice that turned out to be the difference. Mike Marshall got the win to go to 7-2 on the season, with John Franco coming on for his 35th save of the season. W - Marshall (7-2) L - Tanana (4-2) SV - J. Franco (35) Mets clinch NC Central

New York will remain in Iron after losing to Pablo in 4 games in the divisional round. We are aware that effogys of Mr. Met are burning in the Shea Stadium parking lot at this time. Those were placed there by opposing fans, and we assure you...they have been banned for life.

Going into the Mets' 3rd season in Iron, the team added some big time firepower, signing highly-rated 3rd baseman Gregg Jefferies (94 OVR) for 13,002 points. The team had been in the market for 91 OVR Cleon Jones, but after failing to find one, they moved on and settled on Jefferies and his all-purpose bat. The knock on him is that he isn't a good defender of his position, but the team believe that offsetting that with late-game defensive replacements will help that situation.
Jefferies played for the Mets from 1987 to 1991, hitting .276 with 42 HR and 205 RBI in 465 games.

The mid-week blues are running amok...but not for the Amazin's. They are 27-14 in their last 41 games and that has pushed them into a 4 game lead in the NC Eastern Division.
Some notable performances so far include Mike Piazza hitting .280 with 17 HR and 51 RBI. Already well on pace to exceed his numbers from last season. Newcomer Gregg Jefferies is starting to really roll now, hitting .320 with 15 HR and 43 RBI. Mickey Lolich has gone undefeated in his first 13 starts, going 7-0 with a 2.76 ERA. Perhaps this is the season we get out of Iron, but we've got too far to go before we can think about it.

Seems like you're enjoying this Perfect Team thing at least...and you wrote up some articles on your team in your own thread...One way to go.

Clears it up for sure. I figure if someone goes poking around a dynasty thread, you might as well give them something interesting to read. Whether it's an article-style write-up, or me bemoaning my constant irrelevance on my main team, I try to bring some form of entertainment to make the reader laugh. Whether they're laughing with me or at me is none of my concern, just that they're enjoying what they read.

The Mets are heading to the postseason after cruising to a division title. Your Amazin's finished with a National Conference-best record of 104-58. They were pipped to the post for the best record in the league by the Las Vegas Assassins, who won 10 in a row to finish 105-57. New York finished with a pair of 30/100 players in Mike Piazza (.283, 35 HR, 108 RBI) and Gregg Jefferies (.289, 37 HR, 102 RBI). Tommy Davis (.305, 29 HR, 86 RBI) almost joined them in the 30-HR club.
On the mound, Mickey Lolich was the team's lone 20-game winner, going 20-4 with a 3.30 ERA. Al Leiter (13-6, 2.87) led the team in ERA. John Franco (5-6, 2.13, 35 sv) finished joint top of the save charts with Reyes Moronta of the Houston Snake Eyes.
