Made playoffs all 7 years. Average of 98.2 wins per season. Only 1 title, and he was the WS MVP that year.
Mostly bad luck and injury hurt us. Not him Though. He's played at least 154 games per season, except year 4, where he had amajor injury and played only 128. |

Sorry for keeping Rene’s fans in suspense. Since nobody had posted for a while, I figured people had lost interest. I hadn’t realized there were so many “Thanks” for my post until just now.
So in 2048 (38 yrs of age) Rene suffered two injuries: Strained shoulder in April which caused him to miss 6 weeks, and a Strained oblique in July which caused him to miss another 6 weeks. For the first time since the Phillies signed him, they failed to make the post season. In a total of 82 games, he batted .335, but only had 8 HR, 42 RBI, and had a WAR of 3.3. Faced with the option year of his contract, I decided I would pick up the $34.0M option, however, knew it would be best to trade him. On January 5, 2049, he was traded to the NY Yankees along with 2 minor league scrubs in exchange for a 3rd Round pick and a 4-star CF with speed that was only making $20M per year for the next 2 years, with the 2nd year being a vesting option requiring 550 ABs. I figured it was a safe trade, but I was still sad to see him go. With the Yanks, on April 14, he broke his foot. Out 4 weeks. On June 30, he had a sore elbow, but was able to play through it. In the end, at age 39, he batted .395 (#1 in MLB), 29 HR, 97 RBI, .464 OBP (#1 in MLB), .647 SLG (#1 in MLB), 1.112 OPS (#1 in MLB), 8.4 WAR (#2 in MLB). He won his 6th MVP Award (1 AL, 5 NL). In the first year of post-Rene, the Phillies went to the World Series. Wanna guess who they played? Yup. The Stinkin Yankees. Phillies won in 7 games, with game 7 going 10 innings. In the Post Season, he went .250 with 1 HR and 12 RBI. He had a great OBP of .526, which was mostly due to his getting hit by 16 pitches (ahem)<looking around the room innocently>. With his 4-year deal now up, he once again becomes a Free Agent. His initial demand was for $41.5M per year for 5 years. He ultimately signed with the White Sox for a total of $105.5M over three years. He will be 40 years old at the start of the 2050 season. In his first year with the White Stockings, his age is beginning to show. He batted only .330, hit 30 HRs, and drove in only 97 RBIs. His OBP dropped to .429 (6th in MLB), SLG was .556, and therefore his OPS dropped to a miserable .985. His WAR, understandably, was only 5.8. We are now entering the 2051 season, where he will be 41. I'll keep you posted! |

I am in an online league in 2029. We started off the MLB Quickstart in OOTP16.
We've had at least three international FAs come in, signing big money contracts and then opt out during their Arbitration years. They immediately became stuck in the Arbitration system rather than becoming Free Agents. I'd like some clarification on what is the 'correct' thing to happen? |

I wouldn't have had the stomach for that deal, but it looks like it worked out quite well for you (and the fictional player)
I go by the adage: better to trade a player a year too early than a year too late. |

I do the same thing, but the issue with that is it's not really realistic with superstars. See Yankees Jeter, etc... so on.

Sorry to keep you guys in suspense. I’ve been following the message thread, but haven’t had the time to sit and write an update. Now I have to.
In 2051, Rene (now aged 41) started just 142 Games for the White Sox, playing mostly LF despite his diminished skills. His numbers once again plummeted from his previous season, as in 603 ABs he only managed to bat .318 with 19 HR and 96 RBIs.Yes, that was sarcasm. Seriously, though, he posted career lows in OBP (.404) and OPS (.894), reached near-lows in SLG (.489) and WAR (4.3), and had a record-smashing 136 Strikeouts. His previous high was 93, when he was a rookie. So far to date, May 6th, 2052, in his 42 year of life, he is currently getting by as a 1B/DH. He is batting only .252 with 1 HR and 7 RBI in 115 ABs with a -0.1. Yesterday, May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, Rene announced his retirement at the end of the season. He told BNN news: “I’m 42 years old. Some of the guys in the clubhouse are young enough to be my son. It’s time to go before I start getting white hairs.” The Phillies are reportedly contemplating bringing him back at the end of the season so that he may retire as a Phillie. Of course, they would probably have to build a trophy case to house all the medals around his portrait... |

What a beast. He looks like a WW2 soldier with all of those ribbons. Also remings me of LucasArts XWing where you got a badge for every successful mission, plus campaign ribbons and medals.

Awesome career! Too bad he wasn't able to get out of Cuba until he was already 30. Imagine what his career numbers could have been if he'd started out as a 20 year old!!!

The final entry in the Rene Roman saga...
To all who followed, his story, offered opinions, advice, and encouragement: Rene and I thank you! Rene is currently in his second year of managing the Phillies High-A club. |
