AS FOR the Hickory Baseball League website... love the layout of the frontpage. Clean, but missing some easy one-click links IMHO. But easily one of the nicer looking sites I've seen. One thing I see a LOT of in OOTP league sites though is the banner on top, main content in the middle, and then either a left column OR a left and equally sized right column. Obviously there is something to be said for knowing where to easily find information... and there is a fine line between breaking the mold and working OR creating a usable disaster. It's a fine line I am daring to tread. |

Long answer is there are many ways to do it. All free... but all carry at least a little work and if you already have a forum... may take some tweaking of files OR module additions to get thing to work. There are a LOT of utilities available that will work with a forum to post certain pieces to the frontpage of a site... in the case of the APBL... I have seen the code... it basically takes all threads started in a certain section of the forum (usually titled "Team News") and posts it as a news piece on the frontpage as well... then people that want to comment on the piece are directed (by like) to the forum thread. Both PHPBB and vBulletin (among a lot of other forum suites) have add-on/modules that will allow you to add this function to a site, without needing to know a lot of code. Using Drupal CMS for the new BCBL site... we'll have a forum... but frontpage news pieces will be separate (although one login gets you into both fuctions)... then any GM can post a news story and a news moderator has to approve the piece. Once approved its published to the front page and comments can be left by anyone else with a login to the site. THEN I am hoping to tie into the OOTP8 generated news stories as well.. listing the titles with links to the OOTP generated content. We'll see. It's going to require a snooper software triggered to check for new news content after each sim OR a CVS dump. Many years back (dating to OOTP 5) both the BCBL and CDBL used a news suite called Coranto that was perl/cgi based and worked with YaBB (a perl/cgi based forum suite). Basically is did the same thing... taking new forum threads in a certain "Team News" section of the site and posting it to the front page of the site automatically using Coranto. The people of Coranto have since worked there news into an entire SQL based CMS... which is coming around but not complete as Drupal IMHO. I'm becoming a big Drupal fan more and more as I use it. It's $160 to purchase on your own BUT a lot of hosting companies offer it on there servers free of charge just for hosting with them. SiteGround has a vBulletin solution for $5.95 /mo.

I am using mambo cms and phpbb3 along with parachat live chat room. Looked thru all the phpbb3 mods I could find and didn't see anything like what you described. Unfamiliar with drupal and the other items you mentioned.

I do love the look of the news feed utility, that allows the user to post pics in the front page articles. I am a fan of how the way TSW is set up.

I'll put a plug in for the NGBL (now defunct). Cant say enough good things about what John F and the rest of the NGBL gurus did with with the web site...absolutely incredible. When you only use the game to set lineups, manage the franchise and run the sim engine you know you have an elite web site.

For what Mikey? You know as well as I do that our ownership base cares more about the forums than anything else. A killer site, while appealing, is most likely a wasted effort there.

Don't get me wrong... any league that has the most awesomely killer website, yet has a commish/simmers that you can't count on is a doomed league.
But being in a league with the complete package is cool. Giving more GMs in the league a way to be a part of the website content enhances the overall enjoyability and promotes active involvement. |

I had Trade Rumors banner made. It is awesome! I'd love to get a Amateur Draft banner logo made. Additionally, I'd love to get a Biz of Baseball type banner logo, too. The Biz of Baseball :: Part of the Business of Sports Network |
