Preparing for a draft question: Control and Stamina
In preparing for an upcoming draft, I am evaluating players. Since starting pitchers are premium over relievers, is this a sensible thought?
"If a projected relief pitcher has a very high control rating, is good in other pitching potentials, and has three pitches, they could overcome having average stamina, as they are capable of throwing strikes to keep pitch counts low (maybe even be converted to a starter). Same for the opposite--high stamina but lousy control means high pitch counts and the tendency for that pitcher to get tired much earlier, no matter how good their stuff and movement are." Is that reasonable logic regarding control impacting stamina or should I factor in other ratings? Thanks. |

Honestly, 35/40 stamina "will suffice" (more 5 and dive kind of guy). Control is very important for the success of all pitchers (not just SP). A guy with 70 stuff, but 50 movement & control might not perform as well as someone with say 50 stuff & movement but with 55/60 control. Some of the draft prospects listed as RP either have two pitches, or two good potential ones with one bad one (25/25 changeup for example).
