After playing for hours and then being unable to save or restore there by losing all that time and work for the 5th time I will return to BBM. At least it's stable. I think overall OOTP is a more in depth and a better game however that depth may be the cause of the problem. I was going to do a uninstall and reinstall but couldn't get it to give me my license/key # so I can't reinstall. Now I know why there is no demo with this game. Thanks to those of you who helped me learn the game when I first got it, sorry I won't be playing anymore.

It is unfortunate that you had technical difficulties that you were unable to resolve.
For me, and I trust for the vast majority of OOTP gamers here, the last few versions of OOTP in particular have been extremely stable. I play roughly 1,000 hours of OOTP per version and can't even remember the last time I've had even the smallest issue with the game.
I say this not to minimize your experience and again I'm sincerely sorry that you encountered problems. But I will suggest that you have made a generalization in this post that simply doesn't bear up under close scrutiny.

i had a really really hard time figuring out how to back-up and restore from that backup when i first started as well. Lost a 50 year sim. Finally figured it out.
A couple of years ago RchW made this post, with pics and descriptions on how to back-up and restore. Great post i bookmarked and refer to once in a while. Maybe it can help with one of your issues. It's not as straight forward as it should be, but RchW did a wonderful job explaining it. If you're interested - here's a link .....

Thank you for the restore info. Without instructions the procedure is some geekiness required. Not acceptable for a consumer product.

Some other procedure are the same way, like "here's the files, you're supposed to know which one to select".

Sorry to see you go, but I dont think your assessment is shared by any large segment of the community. Regarding your license issue, that's easily fixable by submitting a help ticket

Thanks to some help from Alex I got my license/key and was able to re-install. According to him they aware of this problem with it crashing and not being able to restore even from the backup folder and are working to resolve it. However I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. When I want to quit and save I click on save and it saves to the same folder as it has been. Then I tell it to back it up and it does that to same folder, then I tell it to quit. Is there something else I should be doing or doing some thing different?

Judging by the overwhelming response I'm guessing I'm not doing anything wrong so hopefully the powers to be will come up with a patch to solve the problem.

First a lot of people have been of help here and I have thanked them. I guess you missed the part about I couldn't get my key to reinstall so that was why I was giving up. Thanks to Alex I got the key so I could reinstall. Yes I was pretty frustrated by the constant crashes but hopefully I or the developers can figure out what's causing it.

People get frustrated. Give the guy a break. If he really wants to play and enjoy the game he will figure it out with the help he has gained from posting this thread in his time of need and frustration.

I stopped using the in-game backup years ago as I occasionally had problems with it.

I started to zip the entire league file from the "Saved Games"-folder on December 31 league date, move it to my external hard drive and everything is fine.

The worst case scenario for me is losing one full season and of course you can zip your file at several points of the season if you want to be even safer

Thanks guys! I hadn't thought of saving the file to my hard drive, great idea Germaniac. I wonder if because I play all my games off line if that is causing a problem. I know once in awhile I have to go back on line to start the game.

I always move my backup to a new folder on my X drive before starting a new backup. I backup my EBL vs MLB League 6 times a season. January 1st (sometimes HOF induction), Opening Day, ASG, End of regular season, end of postseason and after i edit The amateur draft for new players. i have had this save since OOTP 11, although in its current form since OOTP 13.

I have had 3 crashes in that time and lost several weeks to months worth of data. I hand edited each player in my EBL (that i have stats for, last count was 600 players) and lost from January 3rd back to October 12th the previous season. I was pissed and quit that league for 5 months.
Most of my issues with OOTP tend to be my fault or the way my league is constructed. Not saying that is true with your save.
