Season 16 (2034) Discussion: 3/18/19 - 3/24/19

I guess we should have something for this week, no?

My Coulee Cubs are back in silver (S294) once again after going 81-81 in their second season of existence last week. This season is going much better, both on the W/L front and with respect to raking in that sweet, sweet PP. Team has earned 2400 PP so far thru the end of May and J.D. Martinez has earned 3 PoW awards and Player of the Month for May. The team is off to a 34-19 start and in 1st place.

My main concern right now is getting all of my stellar defensive infielders (Simmons, Aparicio, Ozzie Smith, Machado) cross trained in time for the playoffs. Jose Altuve is acclimating to LF pretty well also for someone who started the year with no experience playing the outfield.

Definitely gonna invest the PP I'm making into the starting pitching. Not sure how viable mediocre silver-tier groundballers will be at higher levels.

Raccoons remain an upper diamond team, lead their division again this year (albeit narrowly), but are nowhere near dominating. Were we to make the playoffs again, it would be the first time we make October for three straight years.

Hoggs are getting beat up in their first season at perfect level. We may be heading back down to diamond next week, though there's a fair few teams playing at the .350-.400 mark so far

I'm not sure, but I think there's a spreadsheet floating around that has that info. I believe Machado was in the 90s/100 after fully training at 1B. I am actually not training him for that, though, because I have a platoon at 1B that provides better offense. I am just moving Manny to RF and SS every so often so my other infielders can max out their 3B rating.

I haven't used mine long enough to get to max but it should be somewhere around 97.

Aaaand the Critters' lead has eroded. Everybody seems to be playing a bit on the crummy side right now. Well, they play more or less .500 for the last six weeks… but the guys behind aren't...

Coulee Inching Toward Playoff Berth in S297

Coulee finished out another winning month in July to hold a 64-41 record and a 2.5 game lead in the division. The club is 2nd in runs scored (531) and 1st in runs allowed (384). Naturally the club is 4 games behind its Pythagorean pace...

In other news, J.D. Martinez is having a monster season and is in the mix for a Triple Crown. Martinez trails Jean Segura's .333 average by 2 points, is tied with Lou Gehrig's 91 RBI, and leads the league with 30 HR (an impostor J.D. Martinez is 2nd place with 24 homers). Worth mentioning that Andrelton Simmons is almost fully weaponized on defense.

The team has raked in 5115 PP so far with a couple of months + playoffs + season awards yet to play.

It just occurred to me that I have not drawn an improvement for my team in weeks and weeks.

Still maintaining a tenuous hold on first place; on the other hand got 1-hit by the second-place Wangers (sic!) on the last day of sim tonight. Eek!

I have not opened anything worthwhile in my latest PT 19 pack, but I have almost scratched through my desk in anticipation of my PT 20 starter packs.

I wish you better luck than what I had. Three teams, 6 blah golds (3 were obviously a given), a few silvers, and a metric arse-load of irons.

In beta, I got a perfect Ramirez, a 95 Cole, and around 7 golds. Hated the start-over!

As usual (…!), the Raccoons win their diamond division, this time making the playoffs as the #2 seed. Will that result in any more success / luck than the last two times they tried to get over that hump back to perfect?

Coulee Cubs win the division, look toward promotion to gold

After a rough 6-18 start to silver level last week and an 81-81 final mark, the Coulee Cubs took another step forward in "year 2" this week at silver level. The Cubbies took their division by a full 11 games with a 96-66 record. It was a 101 win team by the Pythagorean method.

Being the top seed in the conference, the Cubs will await the winner of the wild card matchup between the Tuscaloosa Tide and the Riverbend Voodoo. The Cubs beat Tuscaloosa 4 times in 6 games during the regular season. The Cubs took 6 of 7 from the Voodoo.

J.D. Martinez was a human PP machine as he ended up finishing the deed and won the batting Triple Crown. He had a .338 batting average (beat a perfect Mookie Betts by 16 points there), 41 homers (beat a gold Lou Gehrig by 4 there), and snuck by the same Gehrig 130 RBI to 127 RBI. Martinez adds 5k PP to the Cubs' coffers for the Triple Crown. And another 400 PP each for the league batting champ and HR champ. Heck, sitting on 11k PP, the Cubs might be able to finally acquire their first diamond-level player. Oooooh. Ahhhhh.

The Hungary Hungry Hippos have made their 10th straight post-season appearance.

2 in Bronze
2 in Silver
2 in Gold
4 in Diamond

I have yet to win it all yet.

This is a team with only one player above a gold in the lineup.
This is a team with only one SP above gold
This is a team with only one RP or CL above a gold.

I am in year 2 in bronze league of Giants and A's only. Was a playoff team last year and added a lot of quality players this year and ran off 110 wins. In the first round I swept the other team only giving up 1 unearned run with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth of game 3 or else I would have swept with 3 shutouts. Not sure if that gets you PP, but that should be something.

...aaaand swept out of the first round.

Sigh.

Definitely not a playoff team, this bunch.

The Tucson Sidewinders are knocking on the door of diamond yet again, taking the division series comfortably. Not a whole lot of action on the transactions front, adding Golds Larry Walker, Wilbur Wood and James Paxton late in the season in lieu of Pete Rose, Bob Ojeda and Mark Davis. (How is Paxton in relief? He's such a common starter I'd rather leave him in the pen, though he hasn't impressed thus far)

Otherwise it's steady as she goes for the crew you've grown to love, so I think I'll end the update with the obligatory George Vukovich update:

I know I should upgrade, but left batting +defensive centerfielders just haven't been in the Auction House, and still he remains the most consistent player on my team (yeah, yeah, Hack Wilson now has back to back 30 HR seasons, but still, I love me some George "I never heard of this guy before PT" Vukovich)

I know that dude. Have a few of his baseball cards and watched him play back in the 80s.
