Eh, not as big a thrashing as the scoreline would indicate. I thought both sides looked poor -- Saudi Arabia just disastrously so.

Asian and African countries routinely get pummelled in the World Cup, Saudi Arabia especially so (8-0 thumping by Germany in 2002 f.e.). Which makes it all the more splendid that FIFA, in an effort to make several billion more, has bloated the World Cup to 48 nations by '26, with most additional spots going to those two confederations and North/Middle America. Those will sure be interesting games, when all the big-wigs like Germany, England, Italy etc. play in groups with Tajikistan and Burkina Faso.

I saw the Uruguay game earlier, and the German commentator said about 20 times how awful of a game that was. I had to agree. I hope for more now.

Btw I am historically fond of Uruguay. I used to play them in FIFA 98, which had a Road to the World Cup mode. Yes, I am that old.

What else? I have had very heated arguments with very well educated people who absolutely hated CR7 for this free kick stance alone:

I have read so many articles on how David De Gea is the best keeper in this tournement.
Did Manuel Neuer pass away and it never made the news???

Recency bias I guess, De Gea had a couple of good seasons with ManU while Neuer has not played for months and then there is the FIFA 18 hype around DDG...(don't ask).

Personally, I think nerves got to De Gea in this game...

And PS: THAT IS WHY THE WORLD CUP IS GREAT!
