Shortest player on back post beggars belief, throw your short players on the edge of the box to block shots from rebounds.

Colombia vs England has to be the ugliest match I’ve seen in a long time. Poor sportsmanship, badly officiated, and just a terrible product on the pitch on both sides. These teams are too good for a game like this. Just awful and disappointing.

I vote for sending both teams home and instead let the Swiss take another swing at Sweden in the quarterfinals. Hopp Schwiz!

Not sure you've seen many games, ugly game maybe but been worse in this World Cup alone.

It wasn't an Englishman who invented penalty shoot outs and if it was he doesn't like it be known he did

I must get up now and adjust my TV set. For a second I thought I saw England win a penalty shootout.

I’ve watched at least 60 minutes of every match this World Cup. And yes, I do expect more from a knockout round than group play. The fact remains this is an abysmal match with terrible officiating to boot. I can’t think of more disappointing game this Cup either.

Poor match yes, abysmal nah not even close, the nastiness of the first half even stopped in the second half.

ps I think the VAR was terrible, it should have been a red or they should have told the ref to look at it, I actually thought the ref did a good job in a very difficult game specially the 1st half, he could have gone card happy but the ones he gave were right apart from the headbutt however he didn't see that it was VARs ruling..

Yeah, the VAR did Geiger no favors but I thought he lost control for a good portion of the match. Particularly at the start of the second half. He missed the headbutt, the elbow from the coach, the attempted sabatoge of Kane’s penalty by trashing the spot. He also let the Colombians push him around in protest after penalty. A yellow card there could have put a stop to that instead of wasting 3 and half minutes of clock. A least two Colombians could have been carded there for aggressive protest.

It was a difficult game though and he could have done worse. So I’ll walk back my criticism a bit.

The end the last 25 minutes of the second half and extra time was a vast improvement.

I understand your points, the headbutt I can't remember were he was to know if he should have seen it, I do think VAR hung him out to dry on that. The elbow by the coach was spotted by the New Zealand 4th official who should have reported it to the ref, if he did or not I don't know, if he did and reported it accurate then the ref did mess up on that. All the best will in the world he isn't seeing the Colombian player kick the spot up that's his linesman job and again VAR hung him out to dry again. Agree with the Colombians pushing him, book the nearest one and if it means 2 yellows and a sending off so be it they wouldn't do it again.

In the long run VAR is the way to go but you have some inept officials running it, some of the decisions they haven't given I wouldn't let them near a football game again.

I'm actually wondering if something was said at half time, the Colombian nastiness seemed to stop at half time and they concentrated more on playing, pity for the game they didn't start the game the same.

Got to love Diego, greatest player I’ve ever seen alongside Ronaldo (Portugal) but too many drugs, also if I’m a Colombian player I’m blaming anyone but myself as the chances are high you pay for it with your life.

Look, I mostly watch world cup soccer so I am plenty ignorant. That said, most of the impressions I have from players come from that event. So when you say Ronaldo and great, I think of the guy that played for Brazil, not the no show from Portugal. Same with Diego. I think of Forlan. I'm sure Maradona was great, but I never really saw him play. I got to see him play in the 1990 world cup where I was far from impressed. As far as recently, all I see and hear from him is whining. He was probably a swan king in his playing days.

Just read something on expansion to 48 teams. But they said they're considering 40 before going to 48. If that's the case they'll either have 10 groups of 4 or 8 groups of 5.

If 48 then it will be 16 groups of 3 with the top 2 advancing to a 32 team knockout stage.

With 10 groups of 4, how would you reduce that to 16? With 8 groups of 5, it's easy.

With 16 groups of 3 I would expect only the winners of each group to advance. Even a soccer novice can tell you the top 2 advancing in a 3 team group is a dumb idea. Team A beats team B. Team B ties team C. Now team A and C play for a tie. These games can't be played simultaneously. The only way to correct this issue it to introduce penalty shootouts for group matches. Who wants that?

They did mention how much extra revenue it would bring in. And how many extra trash they would introduce from Asia and Africa.
