April 1971 is in the books and so far the preseason predictions are looking good.

Biloxi is off to a great start 16-8, 2 games better than the defending champions, Fort Worth 14-10 and 2 1/2 ahead of the Lake Charles Pirates 13-10.

Rookie of the Month:

John Milner(BR): Milner hit .289 for the month of April with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 5 home runs. Milner scored 12 runs and drove in 14.

Pitcher of the Month:

Greg T. Smith(BIL) Greg posted a 4-0 with a 1.74 ERA. Smith tossed 41 innings with 28 strikeouts. He held opponents to a .166 average.

Batter of the Month:

Max Alvis(BIR) Birmingham's third baseman hit .359 for the month of April. Alvis smacked 9 home runs, drove in 25 and posted a .402 OBP.

Did you take in Willie Horton's first game as a major leaguer (if he has played it yet)? Also, go Lake Charles!!! Ahem! Sorry...Rooting for the underdog is such a Toronto sports fan thing (except 2018 so far, but being a Toronto sports fan, I'm well aware of the pitfalls of believing that my teams can actually win the ultimate prize). The 2017 Argonauts of the CFL and Toronto FC got the year off to a good start (previous calendar year, but momentum might be carrying over), and now the Raptors and the Leafs are looking good. Ah well...There's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip.

No, I actually forgot to watch Willie's first game. But, get this, I did watch his 7th game on April 12th vs the Alexandria Aces. This just happened to be the game Willie would smash his first big league home run. He followed that home run by hitting another one in his very next at bat. Good for 4 RBI. But, during that same game Willie came up lame with a strained hamstring. As of May 17th he has yet to play again. He has one more day listed as recovery time, so he should be back soon.

Nice list of no hitters. Makes me realize I haven't posted one for my league.

Ugh, I'm at work and for the life of me I can't remember the team Justin Verlander is pitching for, but he has been relegated to the bullpen. In fact, I watched the game in which he earned his very first save. Was glad to se that Justin managed to earn his 200th win late in the 1970 season and sits at 201 for his career.

At 38 it's looking like Van Mungo may have finally lost a step. He's started the 71 season going 1-5 for Mobile with an ERA above 6, It's been a good run and I still wouldn't put it past this future Hall of Famer to right the ship and go on another run, but right now things look somewhat bleak.

Once again Ken Griffey Jr. finds himself on the DL early in a season. This time for a month or there about.

Biloxi fell out of first place this morning as Alexandria passed them up. Things are still bunched up though, so everyday is a new day.

Hank Aaron now has less than 100 hits left to reach 3000,

Hanley Ramirez received 20.8% in his first year on the ballot. Ramirez remains the career leader in doubles with 482. At the age of 23/24 Hanley looked like a sure bet for the Hall, but he then became human again. Still had a nice career though. 1947 Rookie of the Year, 1948 League MVP. 3 Silver Slugger awards. Players dropped from the ballot. Jim Rice 3.5%. Wade Davis 2.0
I'm one of those sabermetric assholes who would've kept Jim Rice out of the HoF IRL had it been up to me. Is it wrong of me to be happy to see him dropped from the ballot? God, what a prick I am!

He didn't have Hall worthy numbers in my league, so I wasn't surprised to see him fall off the ballot like he did. He had some really good years, just not enough of them.

Dwight is in my league right now and is doing pretty darn well. But, he just suffered his first noteworthy injury.

1968 was the year of pitcher. Lowered the mound in ‘69, if I remember correctly, after Gibson and McClain made fools of all the hitters.

Okay, was looking yesterday when I fired up 16. I now have 3300+ hours playing time. That's 137.5 days. I think I had roughly 1000 hours playing 17 and in the neighborhood of 600 playing/screaming/crying and in the end giggling 18.

Let us hope 19 get us all to the 3000 hour mark! That way we all will be enjoying the new release probably at the deferment of other life tasks that maybe important to our significant others....

My wife loves the fact that I play OOTP. Mainly because she gets full access to the television in the living room.

I may have have to use that in this way: “The only reason I spend this much time with my baseball game is so I don’t disturb you while you watch your TV shows.”

As the end of June approaches Alexandria remains in first place. We have a new team in second place, the Fort Worth Mustangs. Fort Worth has been hot since Ken Griffey Jr. returned from the DL. Biloxi and Shreveport are tied for third with Lake Charles close behind.

It's August 16th 1971 and Lake Charles is sitting in second place a game and half out of first. Could this be the Pirates year? You know I'm pulling for them. Biloxi is also still in the postseason hunt. They are currently sitting in 4th place. Fort Worth is once again on top of the hill. Once the Mustangs got Ken Griffey Jr. back from injury they have been tough to beat. Meanwhile, Alexandria lost Hank Aaron to a 6 week injury and immediately took a nose dive. The Aces are still in the post season, just barely, sitting in third place. Their last series resulted in some more bad news, as they lost Joe DiMaggio for 5 weeks.
