Sweet songs from the Spile
With the formation of a brand new league of teams, the ownership of the Waffletown Syrups have decided to make the transition and try their luck in a brave new world. The one commonality that will follow the team from their previous incarnation to the next is the owner's passion for old timey baseball. The GM has been instructed once again to construct a squad of quality players in the mold of Boots Poffenberger, Peanuts Lowery, Carlton Molesworth, Phenomenal Smith, Sugar Cain, and Pretzels Geitzen.
Slightly behind schedule, as a good number of teams have already completed their training season and moved on to their regular placement in a set league; the GM of Waffletown wasted no time in scouring the waiver wire for players to fill the squad. The initial draft class for Waffletown provided three players to fit the mold: 2B - Tony Cucinello (1938) - 60 CF - Kiddo Davis (1933) - 54 SS - Johnny Berardino (1940) - 56 In a flurry of penny-pinching activity into the wee hours of the night, the Waffletown GM made deal after deal to pull in as many old timey players as he could find to fill out the rest of the squad. He was able to obtain 13 players after the first day of work, and spent a total of 1484 points in the process: (price / position / name / year / rate) 42 pp - OF - Peanuts Lowery (1943) - 62 (right off the owner's wishlist ) 145 pp - OF - Heinie Manush (1934) - 67 31 pp - CL - Johnny Murphy (1938) - 62 33 pp - SS - Ray Chapman (1913) - 62 60 pp - SP - Harry Kelley (1936) - 60 50 pp - SP - Johnny Allen (1941) - 60 131 pp - 3B - Billy Johnson (1943) - 64 10 pp - SP - Schoolboy Rowe (1940) - 51 94 pp - SP - Elden Auker (1935) - 64 50 pp - OF - Jo-Jo Moore (1934) - 68 48 pp - 2B - Frankie Frisch (1933) - 63 40 pp - 1B - Frank McCormick (1940) - 68 750 pp - C - Rick Ferrell (1936) - 72 (the GM would like to thank the great and glorious PT gods for providing more old timey catchers to assist in filling the lineup ) That leaves 9 players (2 position players, 7 pitchers) to locate in the next week to complete the roster before opening day of the season. |

I'm glad you acquired Ray Chapman. I was happy they put his card into the game this year.
Good luck in your sticky climb up the levels this year! |

yeah, while I enjoy assembling a team of old timers, I especially like nabbing players whose career was cut short... saw Ross Youngs in the AH last night as well, but haven't picked him up yet.... hoping to pull in Austin McHenry as well this go-round

I've been really impressed with the additional cards inserted this year, especially the old-timers. Every time I go to AH I'm like "oh wow, he's in the game!"
I'm looking forward to seeing the team you're able to compile after a few seasons. Should be fun. |

Day two of the pre-season saw another flurry of activity as the Waffletown GM continued to pour over the waiver wire in search of players to fill out the squad. He was able to acquire seven more players:
32pp - RP - Firpo Marberry (1926) - 60 26pp - OF - Stan Musial (1942) - 68 36pp - RP - Eddie Rommel (1920) - 60 10pp - RP - Urban Shocker (1927) - 43 34pp - RP - Johnny Morrison (1925) - 65 30pp - C - Rollie Hemsley (1935) - 60 and a final player that doubled the expense budget, so management hopes he can become the anchor of the pitching staff for years to come (he seems happy to be here in his new uniform ): 1600pp - SP -Tex Carleton (1934) - 80 Last edited by stl jason; 03-26-2019 at 09:25 PM. |

As we're waiting for the entry pool season to finish up, your humble narrator thought we might include a little actual history lessons to go along with the PT exploits of the players in said dynasty. With over 100 years of baseball history, it's easy (even for uber baseball nerds) to not know much about a good number of players (especially those who played 80+ years ago who aren't named Cobb, Ruth, etc).
With that being said, I figured I would post a picture and a link to a brief history of the players on the Waffletown 25 man roster. So if you have a little time, click the link and learn a little bit about each player. First up: Catcher, Rick Ferrell https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/b1a40f7e |
