Packwood PackRippers Palpitating Parable

Welcome to the start of the Packwood PackRippers journey to dominance! The PackRippers are a free to play, pack only team. No players will acquired through the Auction House, but cards can be sold in the AH. For now, I plan on keeping all cards, only selling duplicates, in order to be ready for tournaments and collection challenges. So, some players may come from those modes when implemented.

Will this team be blessed by the pack gods? Or tormented with iron demons? Which player will provide the most all mighty Perfect Points? Follow along as we find out the answers to these and many other mind-boggling mysteries!

I discovered OOTP Perfect Team in February of '19. The first incarnation of the Packwood Packrippers was born in the 2029 season. That season was a struggle, finishing 71-91 (0.438). After a slight improvement in 2030 (73-89, 0.451), the Packrippers finally played winning ball in 2031. Finishing at 85-78 (0.521), they made the playoffs for the first time; winning the Wild Card, but losing in the Division Series.

The next year the team would fall back to .500 ball and miss the playoffs. The breakout started in 2033. They would finish at 91-71 (0.562), but lose again in the Division Series. The next four years the team would win 99, 106, 91, and 112 games, but would not be able to advance to the Championship Series, and, thus no promotion.

Playoff luck would finally turned in 2038. Going 102-60 (0.630) during the regular season, Packwood finally made it to the Championship Series, but fell 3 games to 4. Though heart-broken, the team would be heading up to the Silver level for 2039. After 10 seasons in Bronze level, Packwood accumulated 911 wins against 710 losses, a 0.562 winning percentage and won their division 5 times. They were 28-33 (0.459) in 7 playoff appearances, winning 2 Division Series and 1 Conference Series.

Their time at the Silver level would be short lived. The tougher competition knocked their win total down to 89. But, 89-73 (0.549) was still good enough to win the division and make the playoffs. This time, the playoff gods were on their side as they marched their way to the Silver.356 League Championship!

The celebration was cut short as they had to gear up for the tougher competition of the Gold Level. Packwood finished a respectable 83-79 (0.512) in their first Gold season. But, trouble was brewing on the horizon. In 2041, their win total plummeted to 73-89 (0.451). And, for the first time, the Packrippers would feel the icy touch of DEMOTION!

After enjoying the tasty fruits of the Gold level, the Packrippers are in a bit of a malaise to start their second stint at the Silver level. They currently sit in 3rd place in their division at 14-15 (0.483), 3 games back. Hopefully, they'll snap out of it and return to form soon.

As for OOTP 20, that version of the PackRippers is just getting started....

The 6 starter packs yielded the expected return, 1 gold, 2 silvers, 12 bronze, and 20 irons. The gold card was RP Darren O'Day (85, Live). The team earned 12,670 points during the week. Along with the initial 1000 points and a challenge pack, this netted 14 packs to try and improve the team. Of the 84 cards pulled, there were 2 gold, 2 silver, 30 bronze, and 50 iron. The two gold cards were LF Tim Raines (87, All-Time Legend) and RF Roberto Clemente (88, All-Star).

3 Gold and 4 Silver, with an overall average OVR of 70.5. Hitting (73.1) looks a little stronger than pitching (67.8). The outfield looks pretty solid (77.8), but the infield (73.0) is not bad either. The pitching looks pretty balanced between the starters (67.8) and the relievers (67.7).

Let's see how this plays out!

For pack-only, Raines and Clemente are darned good pulls! In my pack only I have gotten 5 golds, and THREE of them are Aaron Nola!

Indeed! Two months into the season and the hitters are certainly ahead of the pitchers. After 54 games, the PackRippers sit at 34-20 (0.630) with a 3.5 game division lead. The offense leads the conference in most categories. While the pitching is mostly in the bottom third.

Individually, LF Tim Raines is leading the charge with a line of .326/.443/.520 while racking up a 2.0 WAR. He's not doing alone as 3 other players have over 2.0 WAR. Led by 3B Judy Johnson (2.2 WAR), 2B Billy Herman (2.1 WAR) and RF Roberto Clemente (2.0 WAR).

The starters have been led by Robbie Erlin (6-3, 4.65, 71.2IP). While the ERA is high, his FIP sits at 3.36 good for a 83 FIP-. On the back end, CL Darren O'Day is having a great year. In 23 games, he is 0-1 with 16 saves. He has 32K in 22.2 innings while walking 8.

Five Packwood players received top votes at their position to start for the American Conference in the 2026 Iron.181 All-Star game. A sixth player, Ellis Burks, finished a close second at center field. The talented five were:

SS Roy Smalley III (PAC)* - .283/.366/.500, 336 AB, 20 HR, 137 wRC+, 3.4 WAR
LF Tim Raines (PAC)* - .334/.424/.543, 326 AB, 15 HR, 26 SB, 168 wRC+, 3.8 WAR

In the annual Midseason classic, the National Conference prevailed over their American rivals 6-4. For the Packwood hitters, Roy Smalley III enjoyed the most success at the plate. He went 2-for-2 with 2 walks. Billy Herman was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Clemente also found a hit, while Raines went 0-for-2.

Darren O'Day retired the side in order in the 8th to keep the game close.

After a real-world vacation, let's catch up on the PackRipper's exploits.

Packwood finished their inaugural season by winning their division and advancing to the playoffs. They faced the Pine Bush Aliens in the division series and lost 3 games to 1. Darren O'Day led the league in saves with 47. The team earned a respectable 9,575 PP for the year.

2027 proved to be a disappointing year for Packwood. While the regular season record was just 2 games worse at 94-68 (0.580), they finished 4 games back in the division and missed the playoffs. The team earned a disappointing 6,090 PP for the year.

Shaking off the disappointment of the past year, 2028 would see Packwood soar to new heights. After finishing an outstanding regular season at 106-56 (0.654), Packwood would go on to capture the League Championship! Every playoff series was a battle, but Packwood emerged on top! The team earned a whopping 17,910 PP for the season.

With no new players over the past 2 seasons, it's time to put 24,410 PP to work and see who we can get to help this team at their new Bronze level of play.

Due to missing the last 2 seasons, 2029's pack ripping session was huge. 24 packs bought with PP plus 1 pack from challenge mode gave Packwood 150 shots at greatness. While the results were close to expectations, they missed a little to the low side. We pulled 1 diamond, 4 golds, and 3 silvers. While diamond and gold were slightly above expectations, silver was significantly below, expecting 6.25 while only getting 3.

However, all was not lost. Of the 8 plus cards, 7 were pitchers. Given this team's desparate need for pitching, this might significantly improve the team's outlook.

Maybe. Depends on how strict you are with your rules. This card is from 1986 when he was with the Astros. He's not destroying bronze level like I hoped. In 6 starts, he's 2-3 with 4.02 ERA (102 ERA+). His FIP is 3.52 (85 FIP-), so I guess his been a little unlucky. Although, his BABIP is 0.267 vs 0.300 for league, so maybe not. Only 38IP, so small sample size...

The rules have been lifted on my main (used to be players who played at least X amount of games in the National League), and on my Mets theme team anything goes as long as you were a member of the team. Like if I wanted to, I could go grab an Andres Galarraga card for them even though he never played for them, simply because he signed with them in 2005 but didn't make the team out of Spring Training. I could also cite Yogi Berra, whose silver card I have as he played a handful of games for the team near the end of his career before eventually becoming their manager a few years later.

Another year, another Championship for the Packwood PackRippers! Packwood's time at the Bronze level lasted only 1 year as they managed to win it all to advance to Silver level. After a 99-63 regular season, Packwood navigated a tough playoff race to come out on top for the second year in a row!

The pitchers were led by Mike Scott (16-6, 2.51ERA). In 197.1IP, he generated 4.6WAR with a 159 ERA+ and 82 FIP-. He threw 3 complete game shutouts and allowed opposing batters to hit just .227/.280/.350/.630.

On the offensive side, the PackRippers were led by RF Roberto Clemente with 6.5WAR. In 151 games, he hit .307/.336/.526 with 29 HRs and 123 RBIs. Amazingly, he had a 42-game(!) RBI streak that earned him 3,000 PP, making him the leader in that category by far!

On the whole, Packwood earned 16,085PP with the team earning 7,300 (45%) of those. Top individual earners were RF Roberto Clemente (3,770), SP Mike Scott (980) and CL Darren O'Day (730).

With just over 16,000PP, Packwood was able to look at 96 players to try to improve the roster. Of those 96, we got 1 diamond, 2 gold, and 4 silver. Four of those made the cut.

Overall, the team's rating improved from an average of 77.0 to 79.9. While, the total market value increased 20,620PP, from 53,638 to 74,258.

Demotions included 2 silvers and 3 bronzes to make room for 1 diamond, 2 golds, and 2 silvers. In addition to the four above, the fifth "new" player was on the reserve roster last year (C Tom Murphy - 71, 2019 Live).

After averaging almost 99 wins per season in their first 4 years, it looks like Packwood has found their level of competition. At the Silver level for the first time, the PackRippers finished a respectable 86-76 (0.531). Good enough for third place in their division, but missing out on the wild card by 2 games.

Mike Scott had a phenomenal year for Packwood. His 22 wins, 2.73ERA (2.73FIP, 65FIP-), and 272 strikeouts led the league, earning him not only the pitcher's triple crown, but Pitcher of the Year honors. He provided an amazing 8.0 WAR! Don Drysdale also had an excellent year. He went 16-12 with 3.76ERA (3.43FIP, 85FIP-). He provided the team with 4.9 WAR.

Once again the hitters were paced by RF Roberto Clemente. He generated 5.2WAR, hitting .314/.349/.491/.840. That's an OPS+ of 141 and wRC+ of 127. CF Irv Noren, LF Joc Pederson, and DH Tim Raines also had solid years, producing 3+WAR each.

On the year, Packwood earned 12,595PP with the team earning only 1,925 (15.3%) of those. The top individual earners were SP Mike Scott (6,900!), SP Don Drysdale (860) and 1B Jo Adcock (680).

With 13,645PP plus a challenge pack, Packwood has 84 players to sort thru for the 2031 season. This session was completely hit or miss. I've never opened so many 1-bronze/5-iron packs before. While expecting 5+ silver or higher cards, we only got 3. But 2 of those were diamonds!

While diamond and gold were slightly above expectations, silver was significantly below, expecting 6.25 while only getting 3. However, all was not lost. Of the 8 plus cards, 7 were pitchers. Given this team's desparate need for pitching, this might significantly improve the team's outlook. jeffstified Minors (Double A) Join Date: Feb 2019 Posts: 141	Maybe. Depends on how strict you are with your rules. This card is from 1986 when he was with the Astros. He's not destroying bronze level like I hoped. In 6 starts, he's 2-3 with 4.02 ERA (102 ERA+). His FIP is 3.52 (85 FIP-), so I guess his been a little unlucky. Although, his BABIP is 0.267 vs 0.300 for league, so maybe not. Only 38IP, so small sample size...

Packwood's time at the Bronze level lasted only 1 year as they managed to win it all to advance to Silver level. After a 99-63 regular season, Packwood navigated a tough playoff race to come out on top for the second year in a row! The pitchers were led by Mike Scott (16-6, 2.51ERA). In 197.1IP, he generated 4.6WAR with a 159 ERA+ and 82 FIP-. He threw 3 complete game shutouts and allowed opposing batters to hit just .227/.280/.350/.630. On the offensive side, the PackRippers were led by RF Roberto Clemente with 6.5WAR. In 151 games, he hit .307/.336/.526 with 29 HRs and 123 RBIs. Amazingly, he had a 42-game(!) RBI streak that earned him 3,000 PP, making him the leader in that category by far! On the whole, Packwood earned 16,085PP with the team earning 7,300 (45%) of those. Top individual earners were RF Roberto Clemente (3,770), SP Mike Scott (980) and CL Darren O'Day (730).

Of those 96, we got 1 diamond, 2 gold, and 4 silver. Four of those made the cut. SP Don Drysdale (91, Hardware Heroes) 1B Joe Adcock (71, Historical All-Star) LF Joc Pederson (89, 2019 Live) LF Willie Stargell (89, Historical All-Star) Other Silver+ cards were: RP Jonny Venters (70, 2019 Live) 2B Adam Kennedy (75, Unsung Heroes) SS Johan Camargo (70, 2019 Live) Overall, the team's rating improved from an average of 77.0 to 79.9. While, the total market value increased 20,620PP, from 53,638 to 74,258. Demotions included 2 silvers and 3 bronzes to make room for 1 diamond, 2 golds, and 2 silvers. In addition to the four above, the fifth "new" player was on the reserve roster last year (C Tom Murphy - 71, 2019 Live). jeffstified Minors (Double A) Join Date: Feb 2019 Posts: 141	2030 Season Recap After averaging almost 99 wins per season in their first 4 years, it looks like Packwood has found their level of competition. At the Silver level for the first time, the PackRippers finished a respectable 86-76 (0.531). Good enough for third place in their division, but missing out on the wild card by 2 games. Mike Scott had a phenomenal year for Packwood. His 22 wins, 2.73ERA (2.73FIP, 65FIP-), and 272 strikeouts led the league, earning him not only the pitcher's triple crown, but Pitcher of the Year honors. He provided an amazing 8.0 WAR! Don Drysdale also had an excellent year. He went 16-12 with 3.76ERA (3.43FIP, 85FIP-). He provided the team with 4.9 WAR. Once again the hitters were paced by RF Roberto Clemente. He generated 5.2WAR, hitting .314/.349/.491/.840. That's an OPS+ of 141 and wRC+ of 127. CF Irv Noren, LF Joc Pederson, and DH Tim Raines also had solid years, producing 3+WAR each. On the year, Packwood earned 12,595PP with the team earning only 1,925 (15.3%) of those. The top individual earners were SP Mike Scott (6,900!), SP Don Drysdale (860) and 1B Jo Adcock (680).

This session was completely hit or miss. I've never opened so many 1-bronze/5-iron packs before. While expecting 5+ silver or higher cards, we only got 3. But 2 of those were diamonds! Added to the roster: SP Noah Syndergaard (96, 2019 Live) 2B Brett Boone (91, Historical All-Star) RF David Dahl (84, 2019 Live) To make room, these players were demoted: RP Robbie Erlan (72, 2019 Live) SS Roy Smalley III (75, Historical All-Star) CF Irv Noren (70, Rookie Sensation) The team's overall rating improved to 81.8 from 79.9. Packwood's market value increased 17,793PP (24%) to 92,051.
